"But I understand the need and want to latch on to that white privilege but lets just stop it". Thank you for so eloquently speaking truth to light. Colorism is derived from white supremacy which is rooted in the fallacy that believes anything white or closest to white is superior. But most of us including white people know this is not true, unless we are miseducated. Instead it's a social construct that's been implemented to oppress certain groups of individuals(minorities) and uplift other individuals(white people). I am African American and recognized colorism at an early age. Noting I was often oppressed in spaces by my own race due to my darker complexion. But beauty and intelligence exist among all races and skin tones not just one. So whenever I have the opportunity I challenge colorism and hope others will began to due the same.

I recognized colorism when my aunt would make nasty evil comments about her own daughter's dark skin and praised me for being mixed race. It was so awkward and foul. Like, she's your daughter! She gets that dark skin from you! But she's like, "oh yo daddy was real dark. You get that from him"
      It's so fucking sad

I'm a white British-Isles mutt and this happens to me all the time. Granted, I have brown eyes and usually tan dark and evenly with only natural exposure, but actual Hispanic people tend to make this mistake quite often, and other employees at my workplace would send Spanish speakers to me assuming I knew Spanish without even asking me. I did finally give up and try to learn some Spanish so I could at least try to help customers with whatever they needed, because the need was there. I guess it was harmless, ultimately, but it was still a strange assumption to deal with.

Many people in Spain are actually pale af also, I have a friend that is 100% Spanish and she happens to be a redhead that cannot tan whatsoever, so I don't know why in America people think that tan must equal "looks like that person must speak spanish". What if they're either Spanish or descendants of the Spanish? I bet there are also many latin americans out there that are also pretty pale. Sure the further south you go people on average seem to get tanner but we're still pretty darn European here in Spain.

@@oqeufh there is a huge difference between Hispanic LatinAmerican and Spaniard Spanish. People sometimes confuse the terms and use them interchangeably, but they are different. Latin Americans from South and Central America have indigenous blood, and indigenous people migrated to America from Asia and still have some of that Asian blood. So those Hispanics look like tan Asians. Spaniards on the other hand, are the ones who colonized Latin America and made them speak Spanish. Those Spaniards are from Europe, where pale white are and some are pale too. Hover, because of the language overlap, people confuse them. Hope that makes sense why people act confused you’re not darker. They´re mistaking you for a Latin American.

I have such a weird relationship with colourism as a lighter skinned Filipino immigrant. When I moved from the Philippines to Canada, my identity as a Filipino had been so frequently questioned by my Filipino peers who were born in Canada... Even though I was born in the Philippines, they often implied that I wasn’t “Filipino enough” because my skin is not and will never be as dark as theirs. My skin tone was often the butt of jokes; most of them involving me being “pale for a Filipino”. It’s definitely a bizarre situation and I honestly still don’t know what to fully make of it... I’m glad that you’re bringing up discussions about colourism and it’s relationship to beauty and class standards because these issues are so internalized and at times, are very hard to navigate.

Growing up, my east Asian parents weren't in agreement on how I looked as a girl. My skin tans easily and I'm naturally slim but muscular. My mom wanted me to watch my diet, wear sunscreen, and not get too muscular by playing too hard. My dad, on the other hand, encouraged me to eat protein and become strong. In my teen years, asian friends called me white washed. My features are a bit ambiguous and I grew up in the South and am kind of country Asian. My family is mostly tall, with more pronounced nose bridges and large, double lidded eyes. Asian boys from high school I was interested in said I was too brown, too muscular, not dainty enough. They were generally into the kp feminine look.
Later on, I ended up dating some asian men, but also men of other races. I never had a type physically. That may in part be due to never fitting a type easily. I experienced conversations from my asian female friends on how degrading it was for asian women to date white men. Some of them were the same people who called me white washed. Lol you just can't win with some.

Not really, in anime they always show Japanese culture. There is always an episode where they go out and dress in kimonos or do something that basically only happens in Japan. I think the Japanese are very proud of their culture. Ive seen a lot of tan skinned/dark skinned anime characters. However, the thing I noticed is that in older anime ( early 2000’s and 90’s) there are a lot more dark skinned characters and in newer anime ( 2010’s to present) there are practically none. Also, in Shojo there are never dark skinned characters, but in Shonen there are plenty. This shows that the beauty standard is mainly focused on girls.

Please take note that I said features and I was speaking about facial & body features. I maintain that lots of Anime hyper sexualise the female characters they look like Barbie in Japan. It is worrying that those who watch and think if you put a Kimono on a hyper sexualised looking Barbie that make the character Japanese. But I also believe that human behaviors are very complex. There are just too many factors that contribute to this colorism issue. When I was in 9th grade, I called one of my classmates/friends "chocolate" because she was naturally born dark skin. Then, she returned it back calling me "vanilla" and "flour prince". In my culture, "flour prince" has a negative connotation for someone who stays at home all the time, which explains why they have fair skin. Years later, I realized that her skin became less dark. I asked her, and she explained that she used whitening products to make her skin fairer. Honestly, I think that my remark did affect her insecurity. It kinda explains how social pressure can be very bad.

With anime people have said the race of the characters is subjective and appears to be the race of the person viewing it. But when you take final fantasy for example, and final fantasy 7 in specific, the original characters were designed in an anime style but when you look at the present remake of that game where the characters look more real to life the main protagonist, Cloud Strife, is unmistakably European in appearance.

    • @kirag9509
      @kirag9509 3 года назад +7

As a rule of thumb, in anime, the default ethnicity is Japanese if not told otherwise. For example, in Haikyuu, the main character (Hinata) has orange hair and light skin. Some might look at Hinata and think “oh he’s white.” However, the show specifically identifies another character as “half Japanese, half Russian” (Levi) even if he was born and raised in Japan. And the show repeatedly mentions Levi is “half Japanese-half Russian” no less than 5 times - as if to emphasis that Levi is not ONLY Japanese. So with that said, the only reason why the show bothers to specify that Levi is not full Japanese is because Japanese of the default. And this phenomena is not unique to anime. In western literature, unless stated otherwise, white is the default race of characters described in a book. So for white people to take on media made in Japan and arrogantly think that THEY are the default race is absolutely absurd. But once again, this is a rule of thumb (you are right about cloud being European), not every anime character is automatically assumed Japanese’s. However, MANY anime characters ARE assumed Japanese and it’s arrogant of white people to think white is the default instead of Japanese for a media CREATED IN JAPAN AND CREATED PRIMARILY FOR JAPANESE PEOPLE

@@kirag9509 You can definitely say that they are Japanese but many times when in the show many times they point out the "attractivness" of the character which you can mostly find, for the most part, they have straight, light hair, skin and/or eyes and that is mostly from people with European decent. Now for the record I only say a character is a specific race if stated and I agree with your statement fully but I think it's also makes sense why they can be mistaken as white. Though I think we should stop assuming as a whole in my opinion.

Super interesting! Great discussion! Regarding the indoor/outdoor skin tone idea - I've always thought that idea, that pre colonial colorism (which would equally apply to ancient European societies) goes back to being light skinned bc of working indoors vs working outdoors, isn't meant to be seen as a continuous, rational motive that lasted until the modern idea of whiteness usurped it, but an explanation for how these ideas might have first developed, but I totally agree that today they are directly inspired and influenced by colonialism and white hegemony, but I've also always believed that white hegemony hijacked off of this preexisting colorism which does indeed seem to exist and which may indeed go back to the skin tone difference of indoor and outdoor workers and seems to have existed in some form across the world. But I've always thought it was understood that this idea had long since become merely a cultural way of marking class in these pre colonial societies, before becoming about white hegemony. One thing about markers used in social hierarchies are that they do not cause these hierarchies. For example, language is used to reinforce racial othering, but if a non white person speaks or writes as white at possible, they will still experience racism. These markers are merely used to reinforce these heirarchies, but when they don't reinforce them they may be ignored or changed by the system or be employed as a double standard. This is why a bilingual non- white person is seen as lesser than a white person who kinda knows something about other languages. Its not about speaking only English or not speaking non-English, it's about being racially othered. If a white person is bilingual it's prestigious and they deserve a pat on the back. If a person of color does it, its threatening, or a sign of inferiority, or a sign of not being able to speak English.

I'm very pale, of northern European descent. In India I went grocery shopping with someone from the host family I was with. At the store she asked me, in all seriousness, if I needed to buy any fairness cream. Out loud I politely said "no." In my head I said "I'm already paler than anyone else in this town. Why on earth would I want to make it worse!" Some of my friends thought it was both weird and funny when they found out that I would stay out in the sun on purpose in order to try to get a tan.

thankyou so much for this video! this is very important to me as a tanner East-Southeast Asian (I'm both). I delt with struggling with my self worth for a while and I'm ashamed to admit that I'm struggling to put away my skin-lightening products because I don't want to be teased my family anymore.
But I wanna clarify (please tell me if I misunderstood you!!)
I forgot if you addressed this in the video, but when you brought up double eyelids and whiteness, I was sorta taken aback because I have natural double eyelids. And my white classmates never considered my very clearly non-white eyelids as a white (and many of them made fun of me for my eyes anyways. And in school in Southeast Asia, apparently Chinese-looking eyes would still be teased despite my visible eyelid). Hearing people refer to double eyelids as Eurocentric (though I don't know if you were implying that) kind of hurts because my Southeast-Asianness, my skintone, alongside my double eyelids have always put me at "not Asian enough."
However, I do understand that my double eyelids area beauty standard in many various Asian communities.
Again, I just want further clarity on what you meant when you brought that up. If I missed a part of the video, then I am so sorry for misinterpretating your message.

Hi and thanks for sharing! I was mainly talking about double eye lids being a beauty standard in Asia. I didn't mean to imply that having double eye lids means that you're not Asian. Like you mentioned, plenty of Asian people from all over the continent have double eyelids and having them doesnt mean that you're tyring to look white. I'm sorry if that point was muddled in the video, that's on me! Thanks so much for commenting and bringing this up, and I'm glad you liked the video!

If they truly want to be white and hate being Asian, then just marry a white guy. But I hope they choose to love themselves and see that it doesn’t matter who they marry or hangout with because they should love people for their personality, character and morals. Love who you love, not necessarily to make a half white baby bc at the end of the day you’ll always be Asian and so will your kids. Love yourself and hopefully your kids will appreciate and love themselves too. Stop the cycle of internalized self hate ❤

Only criticism is that there is admiration for the Asian man that dates white woman due to its paradoxical social nature- women don’t date down socially but men do hence the predominance of white men with Asian women.
But if my Asian brothers are reading this comment - don’t forget your Asian culture. It starts with language (I don’t mean English). Ensure your partner also speaks the language of your culture - otherwise it’s just colonial intimacy.
To embrace and promote our culture into mainstream western society. Only then can we start to see more changes in relation to more Asian men with White women or coloured people in senior management or mitigating disdain for Asians with lower level English etc etc .
All the concepts discussed by Frantz Fanon in 1959 (he has a chapter about the coloured man and the white woman too)
There is a contradictory discourse for ABCs because as hard as we try we will never be white. it is our responsibility to break the culture of Western hegemonic superiority for this and future generations of minorities that come after us ….

You asked multi racial dating. I can tell you: I am from Denmark, lived in Beijing for 7 years, and I'm married to a Chinese man. I know a lot of multi racial couples - all imaginable combinations!
In China at least, the reason why different couples are seen differently is that China has a lot more men than women. 30 million men are expected to never find a wife. That's why, when I, a white woman, walk with my Chinese husband, he'll literally receive thumbs up from strangers. He's seen as cool and as doing something not just for himself, but for China as a whole. On the other end of the scale, Chinese women with foreign men are seen as shameless and slutty. This is in part due to the fact that there are more men: As a result women are not just members of society but also a scarce resource. Of course not every person thinks like this! There are many people who won't even bat an eye when they see a multi racial couple, but that is not enough. Inter racial couples shouldn't have to deal with the opinions of others, and Chinese women should not be viewed as property.

Anything black doesn't fly with Chinese people😂😜😂 White people are in the power Matrix so despite the whole men to women ratio dynamic that exists in China, bottomline is White people have social power so getting married to one for a local chinese person that attracts praise and an element of pride. its also a plus for chinese men because lets face it, they are internationally(not in china though as they are the majority but they battle with this whenever they see chinese women married/dating non chinese men)stereotyped as less physically and sexually attractive as compared to other men from other racial groups. So an Chinese men marrying a White European woman is a game changer and general chinese society views such a man as being elite(even though you and your man married because you love one another)
For Black men and women who have chinese spouses, you always have to be mentally, emotionally and spiritually tough because i know what it means being black in China............and to an extent though looking from a distance away and observing what goes on around me i think i have an idea of what it means being white in China

While I'm overall happy with my appearance (after all, I do like being tall and voluptuous), I feel being all dainty and petite would've been way better overall. Clothes just looks better on dainty, petite bodies. Now that I lost all that "gross" extra weight I gained between 2017-2019 and I'm back to looking "normal", clothes are back to looking "vulgar" unless I either wear blazers/cardigans with a top and opt for loose-ish A-line cuts (and not body-con, unless it's a date night with hubby).

And it's a two way street as well. The ones with more Amerindian features also look down upon the ones who are more Euro-like. Like, if Hispanics who are of more Amerindian origin and know little to no English go to a store and need help, they assume it's the person who resembles them the one who will know Spanish as well (and IME it has hardly been the case). In countless of occasions since moving to Texas, I've assisted hundreds of Hispanics (many of Amerindian origin) whenever they are in public to navigate around town. The big mistake they do is assume that the employee who has more Amerindian features is the most proficient in Spanish.
This has rarely been the case. I've been very happy to help these folks, albeit at times it has been a bit of a (funny) "challenge", but only due to the very silly differences of word usage. Like, in my dialect, the word "coger" merely means "to grab" and that's it...but I got a few odd looks from people when I was a very new transplant because of it (but I know better now lol) since it's a very vulgar way to say "fornicate" in some other dialects. Other words that had gotten similar reactions (albeit are not vulgar) are: "guagua" (instead of "camioneta" or "autobus"), dron de basura ("depósito de basura"), "bizcocho" (can also mean "torta", "pastel", but in other dialects it's a vulgar word), "boliche" (bowling, which in some dialects can also mean "bolos" or it's synonymous with "night club" in other dialects), and so on...

And yeah! It’s mainly stigmatized in the Asian community. A lot of Asian men get angry when Asian women date outside their race because they’re not keeping the “bloodline pure.” And Asian women are more expected to “hold up the race” than men.
Not to mention a lot of Asian women look down on other Asian women for daring white members as they’re “fetishizing” themselves.
Though Asian men dating outside their race is also seen as “bad” it’s less stigmatized because “getting” a white woman is seen as a goal as Asian men aren’t seen as “real men” in many respects.

Whiten skin is a variation of albinism. At the microscopic level, there is barely any difference between the skin of those declared White and those declared Albino. In both cases, the melanocyte cells fail to produce the enzyme, Tyrosinase, which is essential for the pigmentation or coloring of the skin. The main difference between those formally deemed Albino and the White person is that melanin colors the hair and eyes of most White people, whereas for the albino, it does not. Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, who is a medical doctor or MD, makes this point.

I remember meeting an Asian woman on a dating sight. She appeared light complexion very white face. Eyes were round. But when we finally met she very Beautiful. I told her she look way better in person. Her skin was kinda brown, her eyes were nice with a slant. I had already told her on the dating site that I hate when Asian women hide there real beauty. So when she showed up. She told me thank you, because since she has stop wearing white makeup on her face she gets more attention from men. I was like oh ok.

I never got the white makeup thing. Are they wearing that on their entire body? Hands? How do you get things to match up
