speaking as a south-asian american, i can confirm that there is a deep-rooted problem of colorism in asia. my family is brown, yet they use skin-whitening products to lighten their complexion. my father is extremely racist against black people and east asians alike--he would mock east asian people by referring to them as "ching chongs" (which is so embarrassing and downright gross) and stereotype black people as thugs. overall, the issue of colorism is still a very prevalent issue that needs to be talked about more often instead of getting swept under the rug.

I love people were defending Awkwafina’s minstrel level AAVE so hard, insisting it was her real accent. But when Awkwafina decided to be taken more seriously as a actress and starred in The Farewell, suddenly her accent just disappeared in interviews and promotions.

To be fair to Awkwafina, she may very well speak AAVE in her daily life however, just like some African-Americans who speak it but also work in professional settings, she knows that in order to not be judged unfairly, she has to switch to standard English. I'm African-American and I have always known black folks who could 'code switch' from speaking AAVE with friends and some family members or people in their intimate circle back to standard English with people outside of their intimate circle, including employers and co-workers. Let's not judge too harshly until we know the truth about a person and their life circumstances.🌸🌸🌸
As a fellow Asian, you did not lie once. You spilled the truth. Recently I had to look inward and realized that I learned a lot of anti-blackness from my parents, and it was painful but in the longterm worth it. It's never too late to start. We need to stand up for black people. It's the least we can do.

I’m Hispanic and I see issues within my community. I seen them make anti Asian and black remarks. For instance one family member told me when I was younger I should only date white or Hispanic woman and not black or Asian women. Not that I’m older and more confident I fight back against this mindset.
Same. When spider verse came out people were saying that Miles Morales being black took away from his Latino identity, fulling missing that you can be 100% black and be latino. There's a lot of minorities fighting each other, and it's really disappointing to see

I'm not defending anyone perpetuating racism, and its great to speak on these topics, but I hope you understand that all minorities face racism. Asian hate crimes have skyrocketed these past years due to the virus, and not acknowledging that is pure stupidity. I'm just glad that there's finally a non-black person who understands that it is not a black persons' job to educate them. Someone has finally put in the work themselves to learn about black people and stayed with in their lane. Sometimes learning about and being around different types of people can be uncomfortable and scary, but that isn't an excuse for ignorance. Non-black people often times feel so entitled to our time, knowledge, and resources. Unless you're handing me a check, I am not your teacher.
I am a black person, I don't care what you listen to, what you wear, how you look, or where you come from etc, I just want to be afforded those same freedoms.
Generalizing asians don't experience racism is just plain stupid. Do we have the same rights as white people? No, asians have restricted freedom just like black people. Never think you're the only one suffering because you're not. Asians are now evolving into a more open minded society because of the internet, mainly the older generations are being exposed more by the younger ones to never discriminate others. And this is a far cry from the western world who still have segregation problems.

Let me be plain and clear: there is a part of African-American culture that has no respect of Asians. Period. They look down on Asians. Make fun of them. Treat them as victims to taunt and attack. This division exists independent of anyone else. It is not someone else stirring things up. You cannot always blame outside agents for this. My whole thing with this racism of many idols and even entertainment companies of South Korea is that they want global influence, which isn’t an issue, but don’t take the time to include, acknowledge, educate themselves on, or even speak up for black people both in and out of the industry. Soft power is effective, but when it alienates the people it steals from them, you knows there’s an issue.
This is why instead of some joining to help fight the system put in place, it is easier to just join in and contribute to it. I believe many non-blacks do this also as a way to not become a target like black people are. They see the hell we face but would never want to walk in our shoes.
As being mixed Black and Asian, I can totally agree with the practice of colorism. Asians have practicing of colorism for centuries. The many times growing up I have been ridiculed for my skin color. Just having a darker skin color I was told I wasn’t smart enough and that I wasn’t beautiful. My mother hid my black identity for so long just because my mom felt sort of shame for getting into a relationship of my biological father. For years she pushed saying that step dad was my real dad for so long. And let me tell you the amount of times my mother denied my biological black identity by only accepting his mixed identity with Asian blood. Whenever I talk about my racial background. I remember countless times as I was dancing to hip hop I was seen as I was seen trying to be Black. For which some reason had very negative undertones.
Most people everywhere don't favor the unique. Always crowd mentality. The whole world is like a public school 🙄. I prefer to be unique at the end of the day. The unique seem to get noticed more anyway for the public to idolize as far as music(I don't know about nowadays though too much from what I see besides the very small few) , art, modeling/fashion, acting, etc. goes. Just keep your own mind about you. There can only be one you 😉.
I am "blasian" too and simplest way I can put is due to colorism what was negative in Chinese community was actually a "positive" in black community which isn't really even a positive because why would I want to be treated better than my darker skin relatives? I don't want that anymore than being treated worse than being too dark to be "real Chinese" its all wrong

Lmao one when I was 12 in Mississippi me and my family walked into an Asian hair store. The second the owner saw we were black she exclaimed," Hello ghetto people!" That surprised the fuck out of us, we left but that was so uncomfortable.
The Asian-owned beauty supply stores were always a flash point in the Black neighborhoods I've lived in, and you ask a really good question. Why open a business that serves a group of people you don't like? The open contempt and distrust from some of these owners was palpable when you'd walk through the door. It just didn't make any sense. I think everyone has a right to own and run a business, but basic customer service principles should always be top of mind, like respecting the customer. Treating all your customers like criminals seems like a bad business model.
Convenience. Suppose the store is the only close one, or the cheapest. In that case I can easily see people put up with racist behaviour for time ot financial saving. Or maybe they go with "friends" that prefer that establishment. Of course in case none of those things are true, I've got no clue why someone would keep subjecting themselves to an uncomfortable environment if the they had a choice

Thank for you honesty. I'm black and have come to the conclusion that trying to change people from hating us is futile. I teach my children that only their people will ever treat them as equals. Instead of placing yourself among people who value your money while despising you, keep away. This is safer on their long term well being and mind state and no one will have to be uncomfortable by your presence among them.
Hi, I wanted some clarification on your statement on what you taught your kids. When you say their own people, do you mean people who know what they're going through and can relate to them or do you mean people with the same color? I ask this because even some people of the same colour of skin may not even accept you. For example, if you are black grew up in an urban areas or "in the hood" and you like metal or country music than the more respected rap music in that area, others around you may question if you're really "black". I'm not trying to argue here, just wanted to be clear on what point you were making and hopefully start a nice dialog 😄
Grew up with a Asian friend. Played football with him ( he was a beast) My pops treated him like family too but as we got older he tended to just hang with the white kids. Heard he had a party at his house an then it hit me... All these years I wasn't ever even allowed to his house.. and I never truly meet his parents properly...but the white kids.. no problem. They actually ended up influencing him down the wrong path...got in bunch of trouble...My first Asian American experience..

what about all those kids in the 80's and 90's who went to public schools and had Black/Hispanic kids attack them make fun of them. What do we say to every group that has been mistreated? Is it the Black kids were not racist, but the Asian ones are racist?
I'm Vietnamese-American. Parents are viet immigrants and there's lots of anti-blackness from them that was installed into me at a young age. I'm constantly trying to reprogram the racism out of me. My dad would talk about how black people constantly smoked weed and how it was all their fault for being uneducated and poor. He would constantly hate on rap, though that doesn't necessarily translate to anti-blackness, the dude just kept saying it so much whenever rap music played. And he would avoid black men on the streets too. He would complain about Mexicans as well, calling them loud, fat, and blaming them for spikes in covid cause they "partied too often without masks". He consumes a lot of conservative viet news that constantly supports the white capitalist hegemony. It's funny that he would offhandedly say that all races are equal, says he has a black friend, all the while keeping his bigotted views.
Also doesn't help that we live in middle class, conservative Orange County. My white suburban, highschool english teacher said that we could use the n-word when speaking of it educationally, and as the naive 9th grader i was, i followed her example right next to a black kid who really didn't want people to say the n-word.
Wow that explains a lot, when I was a kid an asian clerk at a store slapped my hand and accused me of trying to steal candy as I was reaching in my pocket to get the money to pay for it. It traumatized me and my dad told me that it's because Chinese people hate Mexicans. So I avoided that store and whenever I saw an asian clerk I felt a chill go down my spine and would walk out for many years.
I’ve always admired and respected the Asian community. I’m 60, and I idolized Bruce Lee for his physical prowess and (philosophy) as a kid in the 1970’s. Thanks to the first Asian International superstar, the Black Community embraced our Asian brothers and sisters.... at least that’s how I remembered it.
I think most black people and Asian people are genuinely good people. However, there is heavy racist sentiment in both communities against the others- yes, there are black people that hate Asians too. The LA riots, the recent spike in hate crimes... not every Asian is anti-black, and not every black person completely accepts every race.

The LA riots happened because a Black girl was shot in the head by a Korean store owner who thought she stole juice. She didn’t. That store owner got 6 months probation for killing that Black girl. Then, Rodney King got beaten by 5 officers and all of them were acquitted. All of that anger spilled over into what created the LA riots. It wasn’t unprovoked.
I witness this in Seoul... I hear trap music playing in a club. I decided to enter said club, Only to be turned away. When asked, I was told blk people aren’t allowed in. Major culture shock for me. Keep in mine this was several years ago.
I felt that way when I started watching it, but I promise I’m not a Koreaboo. I watched so many behind videos that I liked the groups, like BTS Hustle Life and the NineMuses of Star Empire documentary. Some people truly just want to make good music they really respect. And I didn’t jump on the band wagon when it became popular. Been on the bandwagon since early 2015

@@merrytunes8697 It is okay to like things but making sure to acknowledge where parts of it is from is the important part. I know that a lot of that is out of our hands and the industry needs to recognize where the musical elements they took came from. Kpop can sound cool I agree with that. As long as you're not cancelling others or being a Stan etc and are being a reasonable person which I believe you are, then there is no problem with it. I guess the only thing people can do is pass the message around in hopes that it gets big enough to cause the Kpop industry to acknowledge where those aspects of their music from black people came from.
And it's not even with just East Asian people. Pretty much every other non-white ethnicity is guilty of being racist towards black people and ESPECIALLY appropriating black culture while slipping under the radar. I think the reason why you see non-white people appropriating black culture is because they think that only white people can be guilty of cultural appropriation, and it's somehow okay for anyone else to do it. If white people can't do it, no one else should be able to. I've seen Middle Eastern, South Asian, and non black/afro Latinos (I know it's more complicated for them because Latinos can be of any race, but I'm only referring to any Latino who isn't black/part black) both in the media and in real life talk with AAVE and uses their culture to seem "cool" while not caring about actual black people, and no one bats an eye. Black people seem to be the main target coming from any other race out there. It's funny because these people get mad when black people wear anything from their culture, but they're fine with appropriating theirs. EVERYBODY needs to be held accountable.

I had a similar incident my homegirl who is Korean had to go home and her father saw her in the car with me and her white boyfriend and the father was staring in horror. When she went inside and came out she was extremely pissed off we asked what happened and she says her father asked who I was and she says that's my friend and her father asked her "Why?" I was actually surprised at the level of disgust and pain she was in over the discussion she had. She definitely hurt over it.

The news is filled with anti-Asian hate, hate crimes are way up, and I’m so confused because it seems that Blacks and Asians would be perfect allies. As a Black male, I’ve been on the other side of hate/prejudice and rude micro-aggressions from Asian people on many occasions. I also have warm friendly interactions with some of my Asian acquaintances and it wasn’t lost on me that many of my Asian brothers and sisters actually marched with us in black lives matter protest. My boyfriend is half black and half Japanese. Growing up, he was bullied in schools in both Japan and America... Thankfully as an adult he seems to be accepted by both communities to some degree.
There’s a lot of racism toward Asians and asian Americans too, especially nowadays. Sadly racism in America won’t be going away anytime soon at the rate we’re dealing with it rn
As a black person, I just try to maneuver my way around the ones who hate me because I’m black..until I approach the ones that look at me as a human being..🥰
As an Asian person, I have the reverse experience growing up. I have genuine black friends who treated me nicely and know others who either attack me for being Asian or used me as someone to cheat off a test with.

Blasian girl here, I have experienced some level of colorist before. I remember one time as a child, visiting my mom’s friend’s house and seeing her friend covered in a white powder. She told me it was something to help lighten skin and, jokingly, asked me if I wanted to try it. I politely declined (mainly out of confusion). I know deep down that she had ZERO intention of hurting me but looking back, it was very misguided. The concept of having a certain skin tone be viewed as “superior” or “ideal” is very toxic and tragic.
I think it has to do with class and not race. Before the arrival of Europeans, Asians wanted fair skin because it showed they didn't work, were not laborers. Class has and differentiation has always been a human trait.

I'm half Chinese, and when people would look down on me for being black, I would insist that I'm half-Chinese, so I couldn't bad! I think it's crazy that I ever felt that I needed to do this. My cousin who lives in Beijing married a Chinese woman. His in-laws tried everything to sabotage him so that he could give up on marrying that girl, They are now happily married but he still tells me of their micro-aggressions. If he gets such a fight, what more his offspring who will be mixed race
Unfortunately anti-blackness can similarly be found in the Latinx community, even if we don't necessarily benefit from being viewed as the "model minority". Colorism is still a huge problem, and any approximity to whiteness is given preferential treatment. Such a shame because we pay a lot of lip service to how mestizaje is a point of great pride, but when it comes down to it, we don't always follow through when it comes to supporting fellow POC :/ Edit: some ppl in the replies are proving my point...

I've been talking endlessly about the mestiziaje ideology and the myth that Latin America/Caribbean is a harmonious racially mixed paradise (where oddly no one is "white"'anymore so therefore no one has to take accountability for the brutal legacy of European imperialism).

When I was getting my PhD, I had Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Indians, Vietnamese, Filipino and Pakistanis both US born and foreign nationals in my course. The Chinese, Japanese and Koreans would NOT do statistics exercises with anyone who was not white! I lie to you not. They thought they were literally above everyone in the class and constantly told us, just like many of the white kids did, how the "poor Blacks and Hispanics" were in the program because of quotas. What was worse: they also treated Vietnamese and Filipino equally bad or worse. I was just shocked especially because the Chinese students had just gone through Thiamin Square! Here I was in my own country being told by foreign nationals that I along with my black and brown classmates were LESS than them. What was worse was the amount of CHEATING that went on in our classes. There were some really gifted Asian students. That said, most Asians AREN'T more intelligent than their classmates. Yes, many do study harder, but many also cheat. It was this cheating that would bring everyone's grades down but the Asian students. Because the CJKs didn't like the Vietnamese and Filipino, they were failing with the rest of us. Everything came to a head when our class had to work on a census project together. CJKs didn't speak English or Spanish very well, but many Vietnamese and Filipinos did. White, Black and Hispanic students were good at writing, but not many of the Asians. Because many of the Asians were afraid to go into the various neighborhoods (poor whites, Blacks and Hispanics), we had to collect all the data, enter it in the computer and asked the Asians to run the stats. They refused! Our professor locked us in a room and told us to figure it out. Heads rolled. There were physical fights between several of the students. Finally, I just told our teacher what went down and didn't care if my classmates didn't like me. I wasn't going to loose my scholarship because they thought my classmates and I were stupid or poor statisticians. We were poor students because certain sectors (Whites and Asians) thought that their classmates were undeserving of being in the program. Nevermind that the majority of Black, Hispanic, Filipino and Vietnamese spent MORE time than CJKS and Whites on scholarship programs, recruiting and mentoring. But hey, we are the dumb ones because both Asian and White parents have raised their kids to believe they were better than Blacks, Hispanics and the "poor Asian cousins" the Vietnamese and Filipinos. This was thirty years ago. It's sad that these thoughts are still going on. I am good friends many of my cohorts from my program including Indians, Pakastanis, Filipinos and Vietnamese. Unfortunately, I am not friends with any of the CJK set. It's just sad and I don't know how to make it better when certain groups have been taught by parents and elders to dislike others while at the same time being colorists.

You would think that minorities would all work TOGETHER to help fight _against_ racism and bigotry. Instead, it almost plays out like a _competition!_ Other minorities will either keep silent while racism against Blacks is going on, (which is COMPLIANCE). _OR,_they will _join in_ on the oppression; sometimes because they genuinely, sincerely believe that they are "better" than Blacks- (Go to any area on Earth where there are people, and Black folks are _always,_ _ALWAYS at the *VERY BOTTOM* of the social hierarchy.) - and sometimes other minorities "participate" in racism against Blacks because they feel like they have to "join in" to continue being a part of the crowd. It's like a popularity contest. They want to stay on the cool kid's (racist Whites) "good side", and feel that if they stand up against racism then they will then make THEMSELVES into a target. Sometimes this is actually the case. Even if you remove Black people from the equation, colorism _still_ exists. Asian, Indian, and Hispanic cultures all tend to consider paler skin within their society to be "better" and "more pleasing". This is the case in Black culture, too. Black folks make it a point to consider light skin to be "preferable". To the point that some Black families noticably treat light skinned family members better than dark skinned members. I'm considered "dark skinned" (I am the color of former _Destiny's Child_ member, Kelly Rowland) and growing up, I had to deal with family members treating my light skinned cousins better than myself and my younger brother. Today, those light skinned cousins are spoiled, entitled brats and often in trouble due to rarely being told "no" as children. Again, I greatly appreciate the fact that you used your platform to call attention to this and to say what others are too afraid to. I hope that one day all races can live together without bigotry and hate and just support one another and celebrate our differences. It's so deep seated that it's scary.

THANK YOU for this video! As an asian I’ve noticed that colorism is such a huge issue. I know the skin whitening industry in Asia makes billions. My parents have said racist remarks towards black people and other POC my entire life. It’s sickening. They would shame me or tease me for having dark skin during Summer because I tan very easily. Yep, that’s how far the colorism goes. It’s ridiculous.
From my observation when looking through history, colorism has been a thing since the early 1900's. There are photographs of people in Seoul, Korea then, as well as Japan, and China even of people there with brown skin but an aquired culture practice of adding white makeup(as geishas do) and adding red circles or bush to redden the cheeks. I know from all of my friends in different parts of Asia that I have rocked with for almost 10 years that there are indeed still brown skinned Asians in all parts of Asian countries that have been pushed to the most southern areas of their countries and are treated as less than as well. Even India does this as well. Bleaching skin is the thing now for a while and it's EVERYWHERE 😕.
Yeah, colorism has been a huge thing throughout history in Asian and particularly East and South Asian regions. It’s emphatically not a product of European influence, as many like to claim. Doesn’t make it any less insidious of a problem, though.

Wow! This reminds me so much of a time my hubby and I were at a chinese resturant we used to go to all the time. A black family was sitting at the table next to ours and I hadn't even really noticed them until their waitress brought them the bill. I asked my husband, "wait, don't we always pay at the front?" I was thinking about getting out my wallet when my husband said casually "oh it's bc they are black." I almost fell out of my chair! He said "just watch. We will pay at the front like always." And he was right, they never gave us a bill at our table! I am very white and my husband is latino. He told me all about the racism that exists between the two communities. I had no idea! He even told me that when he eats there without me, he also gets a bill at the table! We haven't been back since. I will never forget that innocent black family who had to deal with that casual racism in order to eat.
I’m not Asian or black, but one of my friends, who’s parents are from Vietnam, had told me that if I wasn’t Asian (primarily eastern Asian) or White, and instead black, Mexican, middle eastern etc, that I wouldn’t have been able to go to her house or sleepover, and I was like 😀 “oh okay cool”

I am a "brown" Caribbean person who looks Indian/Pakistani or Hispanic but I have both black African and white European ethnicity as well as from the country of India. I have never really fit into any one group as I have always been the brown minority in black societies ( Bahamas and Bermuda, the latter where I am now) but also Canada where I was the brown minority in a white society. I have always been on the periphery of the USA geographically and was born in the UK so I have white friends, black friends, Chinese friends, Indian friends, Arab friends, Hispanic friends, other Asian nationalities and a Filipino wife as Bermuda and Canada are very multi-ethnic. I tend to benefit from brown privilege just like Indians and East Asians with the exception of customs and immigration at airports sometimes where I am profiled as either a "drug dealer" or "terrorist". However, more often than not I get away with conditional whiteness in every day life and it helps I went to a private school and have no tattoos or bling or piercings and dress like a conservative office white guy. I have been waved on at checkpoints in the Bahamas and seen groups of young black men harrassed by police behind me. And this was by BLACK cops. But you are right about the "conditional" whiteness. "Brown" and "yellow" people do need to stand up more for our black brothers and sisters. My Indian friend called out his Indian friends in California for anti-black racism as he had grown up in Bahamas too and saw upper class and middle class black people not just lower class. Stereotypes come often from lack of exposure and interaction and seeing negative media. I hate the black as dumb, violent and only good for sports stereotype and Asian geisha and subjugated female stereotype. I also hate the East Asian and Southeast Asian male as effeminate stereotype and South Asian ( Indian subcontinent) male as smelly, working in 7-11 and having no sexuality to attract Western women too. Plus the whole Jeremy Lin not good enough athlete stereotype. Sorry this was so long but keep up the good work.

That's because ,real talk ,it's gonna go down a lot smoother, if it's from Asian to Asian, or Black to Black or even White People to White people, unfortunately that's how it is.if you try to speak to ,lets say, an Asian person ,about anti- blackness ,it's going to come with a mental condition and usually most people don't listen unconditionally(but they should) because of your personal experience , no matter what race ,gender or sexuality even, you're gonna have a but of a slant in your listening(if that makes sense)
that's what it takes. When it's a non-Black person preaching to their own, the viewer is able to project themselves onto them, so there's a level of familiarity and thus comfort. Ofc there will be people who denounce what she's saying, but those on the fence will have a much easier time understanding
When I was in college I had a class with an Asian girl who was hellbent on antagonizing me. I had no idea who she was. I had never seen her before in my life. It was truly bizarre. She was also very white identified. The strange thing was her white friend who was also in the class was sweet to me. Actually it wasn’t strange when I look back on my experiences with race in college. Most of my incidents were with other minority students who were so white identified. I had very few if any problems with the White kids. The problems were usually because they just didn’t know not because they were purposely trying to hurt me like other minority students were. It’s very exhausting being Black.
Too real, I'm remembering in middle school when my best friend's father accused me of breaking the window he clearly saw his white friend break. Being told his dad didn't want me to come over. Damn. I didn't even understand.

It’s really sad because this sentiment was one of the reasons I just assumed that talking to the exchange student in my class would be a bad idea, little did I know that we’d be fast friends. The negative experiences from my past engagements and stories I heard only stopped me from approaching certain people at all, which is ironic since that’s the same doctrine that taught some to hate. I had an Asian friend that I used to work with name Yang Tai he lived with his elderly parents and siblings everytime he'd invite me to his house I never once saw his parents because they would hide out in their bedrooms everytime I came to the house and they would yell at him whenever I left because they didn't like Black people but he didn't care and would continue to invite me to the house which I found amusing because he wouldn't allow his parents to tell him at his age who he could make friends with.
I imagine it like a black person trying find ways out of a burning house (american racism) while an Asian person just sits there watching, then all of a sudden the Asian person jumps up and says "omg! Did you know this house is on fire? "WE" gotta find a way out". I hate Asian Americans are going through this but I hope this is a wake up call.
Even if they wake up, it doesn’t solve their issues of hate and disdain for the black community. This is an issue where you can’t blame everything on white supremacy. Asians have to take accountability for their own oppressive beliefs!

Also the “hell no” is a phrase popularized on the black centered tv show “girlfriends” by one of the key characters on there. So it was clearly appropriation of black culture. I'm glad an Asian is speaking out about this. Everybody is upset at black people for not wanting to be on the frontlines of the stop Asian hate movement but for decades now Asians have opened various businesses in black communities and have been abusive towards black people. In Chicago the racial tensions between black people and the Asian shop owners is so thick that it has led to all out brawls in nail shops, beauty supply stores, etc.
This was a well-researched and much needed discussion about anti-blackness in the Asian community. I hope she does a follow-up video on the recent murders of Asian women in Atlanta.

Thank you for this. This type of honesty takes a brave person who is truly committed to creating a more equitable society. It’s more than a lot of people would ever do. I hope we all can start taking anti-racism work seriously & with a passion like this. Even as a Black person I’ve had to challenge those stereotypical belief systems that are so insidious and we’re literally surrounded by in media and in real life.
As a fellow black person, I honestly have no problem if someone that isn't the same color as me uses a.a.v.e for two main reasons: #1 being that I think that, though it is a cultural thing where your grow up can heavily impact your personal culture and personality and #2 culture, is not only decided by our ancestors. We one day will be ancestors too which means our culture/history is still being written with that being said ,the only problem I really have is when people use our culture as a way to be cool without giving us recognition that the reason why you look or sound "cool" is because you are imitating our culture and it's worse when people inside of the original culture get backlash or insulted/discriminated against because when we do it it isn't considered cool or beautiful but ignorant , rachet, ghetto or trashy. That being said, if you wanna use our lingo, style and music then, you best appreciate and recognize that our culture and people are Fn cool and we are the OG's so it'll never be cooler when you do it, it's just that simple.

latinx/latinos/latinas have this same colorism problem. A lot of "not being brown enough" and a lot of valuing of whiteness. Even I, someone growing up Mexican American, I say how a lot of my family & friends were and weren't profiled by their skin color. I see you girl.

Asian people cannot be complicit in blaming black people for recent events. Those of us who do are doing so out of total ignorance and groomed racism. As a Black person married to an Asian I can say first hand from the responses of other Asians to our marriage that Asian hatred of Blacks can be every bit as vicious as that of Whites. I've also experienced anger from other Blacks for marrying outside the race . No race has a monopoly on ugly bigotry.

It's 2021 and many people are still afraid of loving and liking who they want in their hearts and held up by traditions and supremacy. To live life, you must be bold to live it. There is always someone trying to step on your back and tell you what you should think and believe. You can pretend that you don't care that people are controlling you to make nice or be unnoticed but that is a choice too. No one will know who you really are being unnoticed. speaking as a south-asian american, i can confirm that there is a deep-rooted problem of colorism in asia. my family is brown, yet they use skin-whitening products to lighten their complexion. my father is extremely racist against black people and east asians alike--he would mock east asian people by referring to them as "ching chongs" (which is so embarrassing and downright gross) and stereotype black people as thugs. overall, the issue of colorism is still a very prevalent issue that needs to be talked about more often instead of getting swept under the rug.
Sounds a lot like "subtle" racism in the Iranian-American community....

To be fair to Awkwafina, she may very well speak AAVE in her daily life however, just like some African-Americans who speak it but also work in professional settings, she knows that in order to not be judged unfairly, she has to switch to standard English. I'm African-American and I have always known black folks who could 'code switch' from speaking AAVE with friends and some family members or people in their intimate circle back to standard English with people outside of their intimate circle, including employers and co-workers. Let's not judge too harshly until we know the truth about a person and their life circumstances.🌸🌸🌸

Recently I had to look inward and realized that I learned a lot of anti-blackness from my parents, and it was painful but in the longterm worth it. It's never too late to start. We need to stand up for black people. It's the least we can do.

I’m Hispanic and I see issues within my community. I seen them make anti Asian and black remarks. For instance one family member told me when I was younger I should only date white or Hispanic woman and not black or Asian women. Not that I’m older and more confident I fight back against this mindset.

I'm just glad that there's finally a non-black person who understands that it is not a black persons' job to educate them. Someone has finally put in the work themselves to learn about black people and stayed with in their lane. Sometimes learning about and being around different types of people can be uncomfortable and scary, but that isn't an excuse for ignorance. I am a black person, I don't care what you listen to, what you wear, how you look, or where you come from etc, I just want to be afforded those same freedoms.

Generalizing asians don't experience racism is just plain stupid. Do we have the same rights as white people? No, asians have restricted freedom just like black people. Never think you're the only one suffering because you're not. Asians are now evolving into a more open minded society because of the internet, mainly the older generations are being exposed more by the younger ones to never discriminate others. And this is a far cry from the western world who still have segregation problems.

My whole thing with this racism of many idols and even entertainment companies of South Korea is that they want global influence, which isn’t an issue, but don’t take the time to include, acknowledge, educate themselves on, or even speak up for black people both in and out of the industry. Soft power is effective, but when it alienates the people it steals from them, you knows there’s an issue.
Simple concept, It is easier to join the bullies and do what the bullies do. Let us be honest.

As being mixed Black and Asian, I can totally agree with the practice of colorism. Asians have practicing of colorism for centuries. The many times growing up I have been ridiculed for my skin color. Just having a darker skin color I was told I wasn’t smart enough and that I wasn’t beautiful. My mother hid my black identity for so long just because my mom felt sort of shame for getting into a relationship of my biological father. For years she pushed saying that step dad was my real dad for so long. And let me tell you the amount of times my mother denied my biological black identity by only accepting his mixed identity with Asian blood. Whenever I talk about my racial background. I remember countless times as I was dancing to hip hop I was seen as I was seen trying to be Black. For which some reason had very negative undertones.

I am "blasian" too and simplest way I can put is due to colorism what was negative in Chinese community was actually a "positive" in black community which isn't really even a positive because why would I want to be treated better than my darker skin relatives? Lmao one when I was 12 in Mississippi me and my family walked into an Asian hair store. The second the owner saw we were black she exclaimed," Hello ghetto people!" That surprised the fuck out of us, we left but that was so uncomfortable.
The Asian-owned beauty supply stores were always a flash point in the Black neighborhoods I've lived in, and you ask a really good question. Why open a business that serves a group of people you don't like? The open contempt and distrust from some of these owners was palpable when you'd walk through the door. It just didn't make any sense. I think everyone has a right to own and run a business, but basic customer service principles should always be top of mind, like respecting the customer. Treating all your customers like criminals seems like a bad business model.
Convenience. Suppose the store is the only close one, or the cheapest. In that case I can easily see people put up with racist behaviour for time ot financial saving. Or maybe they go with "friends" that prefer that establishment.
Of course in case none of those things are true, I've got no clue why someone would keep subjecting themselves to an uncomfortable environment if the they had a choice

Thank for you honesty. I'm black and have come to the conclusion that trying to change people from hating us is futile. I teach my children that only their people will ever treat them as equals. Instead of placing yourself among people who value your money while despising you, keep away. This is safer on their long term well being and mind state and no one will have to be uncomfortable by your presence among them.
Hi, I wanted some clarification on your statement on what you taught your kids.
When you say their own people, do you mean people who know what they're going through and can relate to them or do you mean people with the same color?
I ask this because even some people of the same colour of skin may not even accept you. For example, if you are black grew up in an urban areas or "in the hood" and you like metal or country music than the more respected rap music in that area, others around you may question if you're really "black".

They actually ended up influencing him down the wrong path...got in bunch of trouble...My first Asian American experience..

I'm Vietnamese-American. Parents are viet immigrants and there's lots of anti-blackness from them that was installed into me at a young age. I'm constantly trying to reprogram the racism out of me. My dad would talk about how black people constantly smoked weed and how it was all their fault for being uneducated and poor. He would constantly hate on rap, though that doesn't necessarily translate to anti-blackness, the dude just kept saying it so much whenever rap music played. And he would avoid black men on the streets too. He would complain about Mexicans as well, calling them loud, fat, and blaming them for spikes in covid cause they "partied too often without masks". He consumes a lot of conservative viet news that constantly supports the white capitalist hegemony. It's funny that he would offhandedly say that all races are equal, says he has a black friend, all the while keeping his bigotted views.
Also doesn't help that we live in middle class, conservative Orange County. My white suburban, highschool english teacher said that we could use the n-word when speaking of it educationally, and as the naive 9th grader i was, i followed her example right next to a black kid who really didn't want people to say the n-word.

Wow that explains a lot, when I was a kid an asian clerk at a store slapped my hand and accused me of trying to steal candy as I was reaching in my pocket to get the money to pay for it. It traumatized me and my dad told me that it's because Chinese people hate Mexicans. So I avoided that store and whenever I saw an asian clerk I felt a chill go down my spine and would walk out for many years.
I’ve always admired and respected the Asian community. I’m 60, and I idolized Bruce Lee for his physical prowess and (philosophy) as a kid in the 1970’s. Thanks to the first Asian International superstar, the Black Community embraced our Asian brothers and sisters.... at least that’s how I remembered it.
I think most black people and Asian people are genuinely good people. However, there is heavy racist sentiment in both communities against the others- yes, there are black people that hate Asians too. The LA riots, the recent spike in hate crimes... not every Asian is anti-black, and not every black person completely accepts every race.

The LA riots happened because a Black girl was shot in the head by a Korean store owner who thought she stole juice. She didn’t. That store owner got 6 months probation for killing that Black girl. Then, Rodney King got beaten by 5 officers and all of them were acquitted. All of that anger spilled over into what created the LA riots. It wasn’t unprovoked.
I witness this in Seoul... I hear trap music playing in a club. I decided to enter said club, Only to be turned away. When asked, I was told blk people aren’t allowed in. Major culture shock for me. Keep in mine this was several years ago.

I know that a lot of that is out of our hands and the industry needs to recognize where the musical elements they took came from. Kpop can sound cool I agree with that. As long as you're not cancelling others or being a Stan etc and are being a reasonable person which I believe you are, then there is no problem with it. I guess the only thing people can do is pass the message around in hopes that it gets big enough to cause the Kpop industry to acknowledge where those aspects of their music from black people came from.
And it's not even with just East Asian people. Pretty much every other non-white ethnicity is guilty of being racist towards black people and ESPECIALLY appropriating black culture while slipping under the radar. I think the reason why you see non-white people appropriating black culture is because they think that only white people can be guilty of cultural appropriation, and it's somehow okay for anyone else to do it. If white people can't do it, no one else should be able to.
I've seen Middle Eastern, South Asian, and non black/afro Latinos (I know it's more complicated for them because Latinos can be of any race, but I'm only referring to any Latino who isn't black/part black) both in the media and in real life talk with AAVE and uses their culture to seem "cool" while not caring about actual black people, and no one bats an eye. Black people seem to be the main target coming from any other race out there. It's funny because these people get mad when black people wear anything from their culture, but they're fine with appropriating theirs. EVERYBODY needs to be held accountable.
i know what you mean by this. it's like every other race who are not white almost feel like it's justified to be racist against black people. as a south asian girl, i see so many people who do this while ACTIVELY using aave and adorn black fashion and listen to black or black influenced music. they want to be a part of the community while not being grouped up with them. and everytime i speak out about this, and i will continue to, i get told things like "everyone does this" or "i'm not white so i can" or "omg, you're reading too deep into this." and it especially makes me feel frustrated when they continue to use the n-word even in 2021. honestly, on the behalf of my people, i apologize. they are very uneducated on things like this even tho the racist ones are priviledged enough to have the resources to educate themselves and i apologize that my people are not doing better.

I had a similar incident my homegirl who is Korean had to go home and her father saw her in the car with me and her white boyfriend and the father was staring in horror. When she went inside and came out she was extremely pissed off we asked what happened and she says her father asked who I was and she says that's my friend and her father asked her "Why?" I was actually surprised at the level of disgust and pain she was in over the discussion she had. She definitely hurt over it.

The news is filled with anti-Asian hate, hate crimes are way up, and I’m so confused because it seems that Blacks and Asians would be perfect allies. As a Black male, I’ve been on the other side of hate/prejudice and rude micro-aggressions from Asian people on many occasions. I also have warm friendly interactions with some of my Asian acquaintances and it wasn’t lost on me that many of my Asian brothers and sisters actually marched with us in black lives matter protest. As an Asian person, I have the reverse experience growing up. I have genuine black friends who treated me nicely and know others who either attack me for being Asian or used me as someone to cheat off a test with.

Blasian girl here, I have experienced some level of colorist before. I remember one time as a child, visiting my mom’s friend’s house and seeing her friend covered in a white powder. She told me it was something to help lighten skin and, jokingly, asked me if I wanted to try it. I politely declined (mainly out of confusion). I know deep down that she had ZERO intention of hurting me but looking back, it was very misguided. The concept of having a certain skin tone be viewed as “superior” or “ideal” is very toxic and tragic.
I think it has to do with class and not race. Before the arrival of Europeans, Asians wanted fair skin because it showed they didn't work, were not laborers. Class has and differentiation has always been a human trait.

I'm half Chinese, and when people would look down on me for being black, I would insist that I'm half-Chinese, so I couldn't bad! I think it's crazy that I ever felt that I needed to do this. But I also think that it's very telling that my first reaction was to try to use the Asian half of me to insist that I'm human. Thanks so much for making this video!

My cousin who lives in Beijing married a Chinese woman. His in-laws tried everything to sabotage him so that he could give up on marrying that girl, They are now happily married but he still tells me of their micro-aggressions. If he gets such a fight, what more his offspring who will be mixed race

Unfortunately anti-blackness can similarly be found in the Latinx community, even if we don't necessarily benefit from being viewed as the "model minority". Colorism is still a huge problem, and any approximity to whiteness is given preferential treatment. Such a shame because we pay a lot of lip service to how mestizaje is a point of great pride, but when it comes down to it, we don't always follow through when it comes to supporting fellow POC :/

I've been talking endlessly about the mestiziaje ideology and the myth that Latin America/Caribbean is a harmonious racially mixed paradise (where oddly no one is "white"'anymore so therefore no one has to take accountability for the brutal legacy of European imperialism).

Many of us are migrants or descendants of migrants from the last 40-60 years because of imperialism and instead will contribute to the harm and displacement of the people we need to be in the biggest solidarity with. When I was getting my PhD, I had Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Indians, Vietnamese, Filipino and Pakistanis both US born and foreign nationals in my course. The Chinese, Japanese and Koreans would NOT do statistics exercises with anyone who was not white! I lie to you not. They thought they were literally above everyone in the class and constantly told us, just like many of the white kids did, how the "poor Blacks and Hispanics" were in the program because of quotas. What was worse: they also treated Vietnamese and Filipino equally bad or worse. I was just shocked especially because the Chinese students had just gone through Thiamin Square! Here I was in my own country being told by foreign nationals that I along with my black and brown classmates were LESS than them. What was worse was the amount of CHEATING that went on in our classes. There were some really gifted Asian students. That said, most Asians AREN'T more intelligent than their classmates. Yes, many do study harder, but many also cheat. It was this cheating that would bring everyone's grades down but the Asian students. Because the CJKs didn't like the Vietnamese and Filipino, they were failing with the rest of us. Everything came to a head when our class had to work on a census project together. CJKs didn't speak English or Spanish very well, but many Vietnamese and Filipinos did. White, Black and Hispanic students were good at writing, but not many of the Asians. Because many of the Asians were afraid to go into the various neighborhoods (poor whites, Blacks and Hispanics), we had to collect all the data, enter it in the computer and asked the Asians to run the stats. They refused! Our professor locked us in a room and told us to figure it out. Heads rolled. There were physical fights between several of the students. Finally, I just told our teacher what went down and didn't care if my classmates didn't like me. I wasn't going to loose my scholarship because they thought my classmates and I were stupid or poor statisticians. We were poor students because certain sectors (Whites and Asians) thought that their classmates were undeserving of being in the program. Nevermind that the majority of Black, Hispanic, Filipino and Vietnamese spent MORE time than CJKS and Whites on scholarship programs, recruiting and mentoring. But hey, we are the dumb ones because both Asian and White parents have raised their kids to believe they were better than Blacks, Hispanics and the "poor Asian cousins" the Vietnamese and Filipinos. This was thirty years ago. It's sad that these thoughts are still going on. I am good friends many of my cohorts from my program including Indians, Pakastanis, Filipinos and Vietnamese. Unfortunately, I am not friends with any of the CJK set. It's just sad and I don't know how to make it better when certain groups have been taught by parents and elders to dislike others while at the same time being colorists.

As a Black female, I *applaud* and *appreciate* your honesty and the fact that you are bringing attention to this. I've *NEVER* understood why things are this way. You would think that minorities would all work TOGETHER to help fight _against_ racism and bigotry. Instead, it almost plays out like a _competition!_ Other minorities will either keep silent while racism against Blacks is going on, (which is COMPLIANCE). _OR,_they will _join in_ on the oppression; sometimes because they genuinely, sincerely believe that they are "better" than Blacks-
(Go to any area on Earth where there are people, and Black folks are _always,_ _ALWAYS at the *VERY BOTTOM* of the social hierarchy.)
- and sometimes other minorities "participate" in racism against Blacks because they feel like they have to "join in" to continue being a part of the crowd. It's like a popularity contest. They want to stay on the cool kid's (racist Whites) "good side", and feel that if they stand up against racism then they will then make THEMSELVES into a target. Sometimes this is actually the case.
Even if you remove Black people from the equation, colorism _still_ exists. Asian, Indian, and Hispanic cultures all tend to consider paler skin within their society to be "better" and "more pleasing". This is the case in Black culture, too. Black folks make it a point to consider light skin to be "preferable". To the point that some Black families noticably treat light skinned family members better than dark skinned members. I'm considered "dark skinned" (I am the color of former _Destiny's Child_ member, Kelly Rowland) and growing up, I had to deal with family members treating my light skinned cousins better than myself and my younger brother. Today, those light skinned cousins are spoiled, entitled brats and often in trouble due to rarely being told "no" as children.
Again, I greatly appreciate the fact that you used your platform to call attention to this and to say what others are too afraid to. I hope that one day all races can live together without bigotry and hate and just support one another and celebrate our differences. It's so deep seated that it's scary.

THANK YOU for this video! As an asian I’ve noticed that colorism is such a huge issue. I know the skin whitening industry in Asia makes billions. My parents have said racist remarks towards black people and other POC my entire life. It’s sickening. They would shame me or tease me for having dark skin during Summer because I tan very easily. Yep, that’s how far the colorism goes. It’s ridiculous.
From my observation when looking through history, colorism has been a thing since the early 1900's. There are photographs of people in Seoul, Korea then, as well as Japan, and China even of people there with brown skin but an aquired culture practice of adding white makeup(as geishas do) and adding red circles or bush to redden the cheeks.
I know from all of my friends in different parts of Asia that I have rocked with for almost 10 years that there are indeed still brown skinned Asians in all parts of Asian countries that have been pushed to the most southern areas of their countries and are treated as less than as well. Even India does this as well. Bleaching skin is the thing now for a while and it's EVERYWHERE 😕.
Yeah, colorism has been a huge thing throughout history in Asian and particularly East and South Asian regions. It’s emphatically not a product of European influence, as many like to claim. Doesn’t make it any less insidious of a problem, though.

Wow! This reminds me so much of a time my hubby and I were at a chinese resturant we used to go to all the time. A black family was sitting at the table next to ours and I hadn't even really noticed them until their waitress brought them the bill. I asked my husband, "wait, don't we always pay at the front?" I was thinking about getting out my wallet when my husband said casually "oh it's bc they are black." I almost fell out of my chair! He said "just watch. We will pay at the front like always." And he was right, they never gave us a bill at our table! I am very white and my husband is latino. He told me all about the racism that exists between the two communities. I had no idea! He even told me that when he eats there without me, he also gets a bill at the table! We haven't been back since.
I will never forget that innocent black family who had to deal with that casual racism in order to eat.
I’m not Asian or black, but one of my friends, who’s parents are from Vietnam, had told me that if I wasn’t Asian (primarily eastern Asian) or White, and instead black, Mexican, middle eastern etc, that I wouldn’t have been able to go to her house or sleepover, and I was like 😀 “oh okay cool”
I am Hispanic and we won't allow Black's & Asians intermarriage with our children or grandchildren because we are White in the USA Census. Plus we are Whitexicans 😂🎉!

Thanks Cheyenne. I appreciate your view points. I am a "brown" Caribbean person who looks Indian/Pakistani or Hispanic but I have both black African and white European ethnicity as well as from the country of India. I have never really fit into any one group as I have always been the brown minority in black societies ( Bahamas and Bermuda, the latter where I am now) but also Canada where I was the brown minority in a white society. I have always been on the periphery of the USA geographically and was born in the UK so I have white friends, black friends, Chinese friends, Indian friends, Arab friends, Hispanic friends, other Asian nationalities and a Filipino wife as Bermuda and Canada are very multi-ethnic. I tend to benefit from brown privilege just like Indians and East Asians with the exception of customs and immigration at airports sometimes where I am profiled as either a "drug dealer" or "terrorist". However, more often than not I get away with conditional whiteness in every day life and it helps I went to a private school and have no tattoos or bling or piercings and dress like a conservative office white guy. I have been waved on at checkpoints in the Bahamas and seen groups of young black men harrassed by police behind me. And this was by BLACK cops. But you are right about the "conditional" whiteness. "Brown" and "yellow" people do need to stand up more for our black brothers and sisters. My Indian friend called out his Indian friends in California for anti-black racism as he had grown up in Bahamas too and saw upper class and middle class black people not just lower class. Stereotypes come often from lack of exposure and interaction and seeing negative media. I hate the black as dumb, violent and only good for sports stereotype and Asian geisha and subjugated female stereotype. I also hate the East Asian and Southeast Asian male as effeminate stereotype and South Asian ( Indian subcontinent) male as smelly, working in 7-11 and having no sexuality to attract Western women too. Plus the whole Jeremy Lin not good enough athlete stereotype. Sorry this was so long but keep up the good work.

That's because ,real talk ,it's gonna go down a lot smoother, if it's from Asian to Asian, or Black to Black or even White People to White people, unfortunately that's how it is.if you try to speak to ,lets say, an Asian person ,about anti- blackness ,it's going to come with a mental condition and usually most people don't listen unconditionally(but they should) because of your personal experience , no matter what race ,gender or sexuality even, you're gonna have a but of a slant in your listening(if that makes sense)
that's what it takes. When it's a non-Black person preaching to their own, the viewer is able to project themselves onto them, so there's a level of familiarity and thus comfort. Ofc there will be people who denounce what she's saying, but those on the fence will have a much easier time understanding

When I was in college I had a class with an Asian girl who was hellbent on antagonizing me. I had no idea who she was. I had never seen her before in my life. It was truly bizarre. She was also very white identified. The strange thing was her white friend who was also in the class was sweet to me. Actually it wasn’t strange when I look back on my experiences with race in college. Most of my incidents were with other minority students who were so white identified. I had very few if any problems with the White kids. The problems were usually because they just didn’t know not because they were purposely trying to hurt me like other minority students were. It’s very exhausting being Black.
Too real, I'm remembering in middle school when my best friend's father accused me of breaking the window he clearly saw his white friend break. Being told his dad didn't want me to come over. Damn. I didn't even understand.

It’s really sad because this sentiment was one of the reasons I just assumed that talking to the exchange student in my class would be a bad idea, little did I know that we’d be fast friends. The negative experiences from my past engagements and stories I heard only stopped me from approaching certain people at all, which is ironic since that’s the same doctrine that taught some to hate. I had an Asian friend that I used to work with name Yang Tai he lived with his elderly parents and siblings everytime he'd invite me to his house I never once saw his parents because they would hide out in their bedrooms everytime I came to the house and they would yell at him whenever I left because they didn't like Black people but he didn't care and would continue to invite me to the house which I found amusing because he wouldn't allow his parents to tell him at his age who he could make friends with.

@@professorxaviour3649 Unfortunately, this seems to go back thousands of years and it originated with the aboriginal darker skinned Asians like the Aeta and Dravidian communities who are still marginalized within their own native lands to this day. Lighter skinned Asians discriminating against darker skinned Asians must be addressed first before anyone can begin to tackle Asians discriminating against the African Diaspora (a group from an entirely different continent).

Also the “hell no” is a phrase popularized on the black centered tv show “girlfriends” by one of the key characters on there. So it was clearly appropriation of black culture. It’s also not just an Asian American issue but in kpop and certain Japanese culture who participate in black dance and adopting hiphop culture. I loved your video! I'm glad an Asian is speaking out about this. Everybody is upset at black people for not wanting to be on the frontlines of the stop Asian hate movement but for decades now Asians have opened various businesses in black communities and have been abusive towards black people. In Chicago the racial tensions between black people and the Asian shop owners is so thick that it has led to all out brawls in nail shops, beauty supply stores, etc.
This was a well-researched and much needed discussion about anti-blackness in the Asian community. I hope she does a follow-up video on the recent murders of Asian women in Atlanta.

I hope we all can start taking anti-racism work seriously & with a passion like this. Even as a Black person I’ve had to challenge those stereotypical belief systems that are so insidious and we’re literally surrounded by in media and in real life.
As a fellow black person, I honestly have no problem if someone that isn't the same color as me uses a.a.v.e for two main reasons: #1 being that I think that, though it is a cultural thing where your grow up can heavily impact your personal culture and personality and #2 culture, is not only decided by our ancestors. We one day will be ancestors too which means our culture/history is still being written with that being said ,the only problem I really have is when people use our culture as a way to be cool without giving us recognition that the reason why you look or sound "cool" is because you are imitating our culture and it's worse when people inside of the original culture get backlash or insulted/discriminated against because when we do it it isn't considered cool or beautiful but ignorant , rachet, ghetto or trashy. That being said, if you wanna use our lingo, style and music then, you best appreciate and recognize that our culture and people are Fn cool and we are the OG's so it'll never be cooler when you do it, it's just that simple.

I don't believe in culture appropriation also, you'd be surprised at how many of the things we use daily were actually created by or inspired by minorities of all types this is exactly why ppl should just give appreciation where appreciation is due that way ppl like you and I are more informed on where it came from . I teach kids and literally have been told that Kim Kardashian invented box braids and Chuck Taylor was probably black because he was a basketball player...you get my drift?

latinx/latinos/latinas have this same colorism problem. A lot of "not being brown enough" and a lot of valuing of whiteness. Even I, someone growing up Mexican American, I say how a lot of my family & friends were and weren't profiled by their skin color. I see you girl.

This is literally everything I have been feeling and thinking especially today in light of everything that has happened recently. Asian people cannot be complicit in blaming black people for recent events. Those of us who do are doing so out of total ignorance and groomed racism. We need to see that white supremacy has us too comfortable demanding emotional labor and understanding from black people when white systems are to blame.

As a Black person married to an Asian I can say first hand from the responses of other Asians to our marriage that Asian hatred of Blacks can be every bit as vicious as that of Whites. I've also experienced anger from other Blacks for marrying outside the race . No race has a monopoly on ugly bigotry.

It's 2021 and many people are still afraid of loving and liking who they want in their hearts and held up by traditions and supremacy. To live life, you must be bold to live it. There is always someone trying to step on your back and tell you what you should think and believe. You can pretend that you don't care that people are controlling you to make nice or be unnoticed but that is a choice too. No one will know who you really are being unnoticed. Nor will you be great if you hide behind others. Uniqueness and boldness is a must to truly be free emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
