      What's your thoughts on the extended hand guard.. holes --front and rear slide --for better prevention against the hot gases over the other models? Is that why its $175

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад +3

      @@brianchuck9264 The extended handguard gives you more options for hand placement so it mitigates the issues of your hand being in the path of escaping gasses. The version with holes does also reduce the gasses that may hit your hand but it will also heat up and hold more heat as the slots in the slotted rails allow better cooling. This is not an issue if you are just shooting 5-10 rounds with a slow cadence but if you are a competitive shooter that handguard will heat up quickly. The standard handguard is nice and small in diameter which competitive shooters like but that also puts your hands closer to the gas system. Add to that the front and rear rails on the handguard and the front sight placement and your options for a good place to hold the handguard is limited. If you are short or have shorter arms the extended handguard will probably not buy you anything though. And as for the price on the handguard with holes being a chunk more than the slotted version it is because it takes longer and is harder to make the hole version than the slot version. I highly recommend an extended handguard of some sort, it makes the gun more fun to shoot for longer periods.

    This question is about the VR80 ammo vs the added parts. You guys seem to be well read on the VR80. I just purchased on and what ammo and brand and choke do you recommend I use for the 250 round break in ?

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  2 года назад

      What I usually use is the Winchester SuperX Steel 1325FPS load. The payload does not matter and I got a bunch of it at Walmart. It was the only reasonably priced stuff over 1200 FPS. As for choke, it does nto matter during break-in, I usually leave the modified choke in.

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  3 года назад +1

      On a standard VR80 you remove the long shroud and replace it with the "hat looking" lock nut that came in the box with your VR80. The half moon on the end of the tool that came with the VR80 is used to tighten the nut. This nut holds the handguard on instead of the long shroud. Then you mount the Door Breacher Muzzle Break and you are all set. The long shroud will not be needed anymore. I hope that helps, thank you for the question!

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад

      On the carbon fiber Handguard we are toying with the idea of not having slots where the gas ports are but the reality is that because our Handguard is a little bugger than the factory unit and because carbon fiber does not conduct heat like aluminum we had no issue in testing even with the moon slots around the gas ports.

    • @RallyMech

      Hi David! Right now I am backed up for a bit on gun work. The Elftmann is usually a drop in trigger and the toughest part is drifting the existing pins out since the hammer pin has a spline on one side. Honestly I feel like the short comp is better for muzzle rise while the medium is better for felt recoil but they are so close that it almost a wash. I will say that I run a short on my personal VR80. From a "Cool" perspective the medium and long do look cooler which let's face it, is important if your VR80 is just for fun but in a match environment I would choose the short over the other two styles.

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад +1

      A comp does not come on the standard gun or the VR80-A model gun. There was an IPSC model that was pretty scarce and I believe it came with the long compensator. There is a shroud that holds the handguard on but it is not a comp. I run the short on my personal gun because I like a shorter overall length. That said most people run the long. Out of 10 comps sold 6 are usually the long model, 3 are medium and 1 is short.

      I do not use the lock ring (looks like a castle nut) on any of the new comps. The Allen screws that you tighten do a fine job of keeping the comp in place and timed where you set it. I alternate tightening the screws 1/8 turn back and forth. I would like to put a compensator on mine, but I am concerned about having to remove it so much when I clean the gun. I usually clean mine every time I shoot it. Does the constant tightening and untightening hurt the comp? Or do others just shoot a lot more rounds through theirs before cleaning?

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад +3

      I clean all my guns after every outing except shotguns. Shotgun powders are the fastest powders out there and unlike pistols that use a fast powder with a short barrel or rifles that use slower powders, shotguns are able to burn all the powder in the shell while the payload is still in the barrel. This usually means cleaner burning and a cleaner gun. The wads do wreak havoc on the inside of the choke tubes and that is where I focus most of my regular efforts. The action gets oil regularly but cleaning...usually every 500-700 rounds. As long as you are careful when you remove the comp you will not hurt the threads or the comp. In fact, I know several competitive shooters who will remove their comp and soak them in gun cleaner for a few days to get the lead and carbon out of them. On gas guns like the VR80 if you keep the piston system oiled well with a quality oil it will foul far less and be easier to clean. My goto oils are Rem Oil or Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W40. It is also pretty easy to oil the piston system on the VR80 without removing the handguard if you have a needle oiler.

    Do you know of a hand guard for the VR80 that has a picatinny rail on the bottom side?

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад

      The hand guard on the VR80 is said to be MLok compatible so you could get an MLok picatinny rail section and mount it to the top, bottom or sides of the factory hand guard and then mount whatever you like. I have yet to test this myself on the VR80 but I will be doing so over the next week or two.

      I put an 8 slot M-Lok rail on the bottom of the hand guard. Just make sure that your locking nut is at the tip of the screw before affixing it to the hand guard, or it will not work correctly. If you get one, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about upon assembly. Checkout this out at Amazon.com

    Is there any way to install a handgrip underneath the handguard?

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад

      Not on the factory handguard. The extended handguards have MLOK compatible slots on the bottom but the factory one does not. Here is a link to the extended handguards we have in stock www.a3gmunitions.com/product/vr-80-extended-handguards/. We do not expect to see any of the other styles until next year according to RIA.

      @@mleeber it has mlok slots on the sides of the handguard but there is nothing on the bottom at all. I want slots on the bottom for a vertical fore grip. Even the slots on the sides of the handguard are so close to the piston that I'm not sure you could even mount anything without hitting it on the inside because of how the handguard shrinks up and hugs the barrel

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад

      @@f3nixfire You are correct, the factory short hand guard does not have slots in the bottom and all but the shortest mlok addons will interfere with the gas system. However the extended handguards do have slots on the bottom and will allow the addition of longer mlok devices. I recommend the Extended Handguard with slots and full rail for those who like backup iron sights and a red dot.

    • @mleeber
      @mleeber  4 года назад

      If you are asking if you can use the factory shroud with our Carbon Fiber Handguard the answer is yes if you have the "short" shroud that comes with the extended handguards. The long shroud that comes with the factory standard handguard will not work.
