I'd argue that the F-150 Lightning does EXACTLY what most truck owners are looking for. A big, tall, comfortable vehicle that gets them to Costco and back, and can carry at least 4 pieces of trim home from Home Depot.
mexican trim?
*Ford Lightning is rubbish.*
I deliver furniture. I also have the largest Mercedes’ sprinter van. For small deliveries 400 mikes away this saves me $300 in diesel costs. This once a week pays for my truck just in fuel savings alone. Bigger orders I use the sprinter . The lightning pays for itself for me . I don’t tow.

The most interesting about that trio of trucks is how small the Syclone is. It looks like a toy next to modern trucks.
Back when small trucks were actually small trucks. The new "Ranger" is the size of the old F150
Looks like a pedal car! :0)
If ford redid the ranger into the size it was from the 90s-08 id buy that in a heartbeat. Owned one of those as my first car and when I sold it to a family friend it had 250k on it with no problems at all. I owned a newer Colorado for 3 years and it was a fine truck but it’s the same size as my brothers 03 Silverado he’s had since he got back from deployment 😂😂😂

The difference between the Ford lightning and the syclone/Ram SRT10 is that Ford marketed the lightning as a utility vehicle for the everyday man, not just a toy to go fast. I'm pretty sure Ram/GM had no intention of that with these models.
He did get to that point at the end.

Amazing how small the old S10 body looks next to current full sized trucks.
Not just people became obese, their cars too, but more seriously, that's a bad problem on all aspects, a big car needs more batteries/consume more energy to produce and use, consume way too much space and is a danger on the road (good luck if you're a pedestrian or cyclist hit by such a monster truck)...

The Cyclone and Dodge SRT weren’t marketed as daily work trucks they were built for the drag strip and everyone knew that. The Lightning EV has been marketed as a daily work truck and it falls short with limited range, so-so hauling ability, dismal towing ability, and you’re stuck going to the dealer for repairs, and it’s over $50k now.
Try to find a Ford Lightning for less than $75,000. The first year they're all going to be fully equipped and overpriced.
This is 100% facts. Good comment for sure!
This, exactly, why is this so hard to understand?
Where are you finding one for 50? Mine's 130 and it's the short range model
Well put!!
The fundamental difference between the Lightning EV and the other two "dumb, useless trucks" is that its not being sold as a special edition toy like the other trucks were, its being sold as a "real" truck to do "real truck things" with and will be "what pickup trucks are in the future". So yeah, it deserves the hate because it fails at its primary purpose. Had they put a short bed with tonneau cover, racing stripes and no towing gear, you'd have a point.

The Syclone is an amazing truck all around. They were pretty much legendary when they came out, especially when it beat that Ferrari in the famous test. When I see one on the road now (extremely rare), I almost start salivating. Super cool, great investment if you can find a nice one.

germans used to go mental for american stuff, early 2000s you'd still find them wrapped in jeans waving american flags, then they also love racing, i remember arriving in a small town at 0500 and the number of young kids that would pull up wanting to race :)
This is a pretty good take on the Lightning. Cool truck, fun to drive, goes fast. But the price tag keeps it out of the workers pocket, and the range limits it's capabilities as a workers tool. Ford should put more sporty racing stripes on it, be more upfront about what it's best at. Battery technology will need to get better and cheaper before it can truly be a work truck.
People keep talking about battery advancements that will save the world but I don’t believe they’re coming. The evs all use a shitload of lithium ion batteries who’s chemistry is the same as in the 1990s.
They’re a joke.
@@someonethatwatchesyoutube2953 plus the mining and production of these batteries have drastic side effects
Battery technology is 200 years old time to move on to some thing better.
@@Camska427 No one is really looking at the whole picture considering Ford themselves say building lighting takes twice the Co2 as the gas version and then all of the new infrastructure they need to build for EV's it becomes clear with current technology EV's will actually exacerbate climate change in the short term. Just think of the mining needs not just for the vehicles but also for the charging infrastructure, grid upgrades, power plants, etc just the impact of all the concrete.
People are living in a dream world if they think all of this development won't have a profound environmental impact. EV's taking over is premature, it is the perfect example of the government trying to mandate innovation barring serious battery advancements it is simply not practical. There is a mountain of unintended consequences that everyone just seems to want to ignore. Short of applications where EV's have huge benefits(city driving, commuting, super fast acceleration, etc) they do not make sense for general applications.
"Work truck" means very different things to many people. To many, the Lightning is a perfect work truck. Most people that use their truck for work, work locally. Or certainly not beyond 300 miles daily. With the Lightning's huge front trunk, great for power tools and such and the totally silent generator on board make it better for work in many ways.

I’m sorry Hoovie, but your argument is completely idiotic. Those other trucks weren’t meant to be trucks for the everyday handyman. They didn’t advertise them the way the Lightning was (connect your power tools, tow, bla bla bla.)
The fact that you are even considering those two trucks as comparable is mental, and makes me think that you took a bribe from Ford to try and save the Lightning’s reputation. Shame on you.
And if you were wondering, no. I’m not a Republican. I just use common sense, like everyone else criticizing the Ford F150 Lightning.
That's exactly what he's doing.
The syclone and dodge were specifically built for what they are. The lightning on the other hand is sold as a replacement for a replacement for a work truck
I’m not sure I agree with that. The lightening is more of a replacement for people that buy trucks just to use them as daily drivers. “Pavement princess” trucks if you will. Ford isn’t advertising these as replacements for companies who have fleets of F-150’s. Just the everyday joe who wants some cool features and a nice ride

I'm interested to see the performance impact on the Ford Lightning when its bed is loaded (no trailer). I have a feeling there will be an obvious range drop-off but it won't be nearly as bad.
Probably. Regular trucks don’t see as much of a drop off in fuel economy when only having a payload in the bed
Its not as affected as it would be pulling a trailer. The issue with EV's is they want and desire to be aero as much as possible.
ruclips.net/video/6oKRfOpZi-Y/видео.html&ab_channel=OutofSpecReviews This is a 1600 pounds payload, "water" test.
You piqued my interest, so I did the math. Hoovie's base model curb weight is just over 6000 lbs, with a payload capacity of 2000 lbs, which would be a 1/3 increase in weight. At cruising speed, weight and rolling resistance (tires) are directly proportional, and according to Engineering Explained's EV towing video, rolling resistance accounts for roughly 1/3 of the force needed to keep moving at constant speed. The new load would be about 0.67 + (0.33 * 8000/6000) = 1.11, which would be a bit over 10% range reduction, assuming aerodynamics are unaffected.
If you load the bed of truck with additional batteries= problem solved.
Lol he already did a towing test video that went mega viral, to the point of being on mainstream media sources lol.. he drove to the wizards to pick up his model A ford , and back, which is only a 60 mile round trip.. he pretty much used all his range (150 miles) by the time he got back lol
Many many millions of people are driving trucks around every day and never tow anything. The Lightning has plenty of range to take on road trips and drive around town for a couple of weeks without charging it.
This is the point I feel is getting looked over. The lightning is for people who need a truck to occasionally haul stuff from the store, but still need the space of a full size truck. Its a long way from having the ability to be a truck everyday
Thanks for reminding me that I'm still shopping for a GMC Typhoon. The Syclone never appealed to me, but a Teal Typhoon with black, white, and candyapple zigzag stripes is gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the Lightning would have ever been given the green light if they had to market it as a fun-haver rather than gas replacement. As awesome as both the Syclone and SRT10 are, as you pointed out, they didn’t sell well and had very short production runs. Ford has to sell us the idea that it’s a viable replacement for a gas truck even if it’s clearly not true.
The Syclone didn't sell well because it was HILARIOUSLY over priced versus similar little trucks at the time and couldn't do really any actual truck stuff. The Ram SRT10 was just... stupid. Bad in just about all categories.
Saying this completely as a non biased 1 owner Syclone person 😉
I completely disagree. Apparently over 90% of truck buyers tow “one or less times per year”. For the vast majority of truck buyers, the lightning suits their needs quite well. And it still gets 300 miles of range and is capable when needed.
Statistically the Lightning is a great replacement for most truck buyers given what people actually typically do with their trucks. Obviously if you tow a boat regularly or something it's not going to be a good fit.
I was stoked about the lightning until I saw the towing tests. No way that would work for me.

Looking at the Dyno charts for the Lightning, I think I would actually like to see a multi-speed transmission used as not just torque, but horsepower really starts to drop off after 50 mph. You see a pretty great example of it here against the Ram SRT10, where the Lightning seems to run out of breath in the top end.
Great video Hoovie. I wish rather than trying to push one technology over another as a one size fits all solution, we could just be honest about the advantages and disadvantages for given situations and utilize EVs where they make sense, and continue the use of internal combustion where EVs are not well suited.
Lol. That’s all it has. That’s all it has for the next 50 years. No new battery tech. Lol. Don’t buy into it. Save gas vehicles!! Hybrids are even better. Best of both worlds.
Unfortunately adding another gearbox is more parasitic drain, so it's pointless to make the vehicle less efficient at normal speeds so it can keep pulling hard at 100mph+
I mean it's not really designed for drag racing, getting up to 50 quickly is the hard part, then you're not to far off from the speed limit of most major highways. I rather have the simplicity/reliability(cost as well) of the direct drive, and for the motors to be tuned for cruising highway speeds. I mean it's a truck at the end of the day, there can be some efficiency savings and what not but it's just added cost/complexity for a marginal gain for what the truck is intended for.
I agree though, ICE isn't going anywhere fast and for a lot of use cases is the best solution for a while. Long haul towing being the main advantage, if you're towing around town or even somewhat regional then EV can work for you. If you tow few times a year and don't mind a extra stop or 2 it can work great since the other 95% of the time your driving it unladen and you get the benefit of the EV commute costs. If you're towing heavy and far than a ICE truck is much better suited for you, there is a reason there are some many different configurations lol
I like this video response (and the string of vids leading up to it). Even so, if Ford is going to be touting its EV towing capacity, they need to deliver.
Or just stop.
The thing is towing capacity isn’t the issue, range and charging locations and time are. I had a Lightning ER and towed with it, it was amazing but I only had to go 100 miles. For 90% of my towing needs it would be fine. But that 10% of longer range stuff it couldn’t do made it a no go for me long term. It’s far more capable for truck use then Tyler is giving it credit for, but it definitely not going to work for a lot of people and a lot of use cases.
Would totally take the GMC! 🤤
It's the best of the 3. EV's will never take over. They just can't do what a REAL truck/car will do unless you only drive a few miles a day.
Plenty of people bought the standard cab, two seat s10s, back in the day. They were everywhere. The reason the Syclone didn’t sell in higher numbers was the cost. They were really expensive compared to a loaded Tahoe edition s10, which wasn’t cheap. I remember ordering a 1989 s10 Tahoe trim, extended cab, loaded, for under $18k and the Syclone was close to $26k.
Your comparison and conclusion captures the point, the Ford Lightning is a good specialty truck, and possibly a good vehicle for Ford to test the market for functionality and concept acceptance. However, it's not a technology ready for prime time and definitely not a replacement for those who need a functional truck.
Love your Syclone, they're so much fun!
To be clear, functional truck does not mean amazing towing. I would be shocked if more than 30% of truck owners in the US tow substantial loads at all, much less a great distance. If that number is close to reality, most people who have homes where they can install a charger are ready to go. The average American drives 40 to 50 miles per day.
@@Mguy393 Yeah, it can tow 40 to 50 miles, maybe 80. But not meant for a lot of truck things. Insisting it's a replacement for today's trucks invites a lot of "hate"

The lightning is a replacement for the urban warriors who drive pickups and their vehicles which never see a load beyond groceries and gravel driveways. Unfortunately, there a millions being used like this.
About 75% of F150 owners use their truck to tow one time or less per year. For them, it makes a lot of sense
Why is it unfortunate? The owners want to drive trucks. Every city I've been in has terrible roads and terrible drivers and I wish I had a pickup truck to deal with that.
It’s also good for hauling payload. The ONLY weakness is long distance towing. If you regularly tow more than across town or so, get something else. But if you do ANY other truck things, this could be a good choice
Hoovie, I think it depends on the use case for the Lightning. Let's say you are a utility or construction company within a county. You drive to your spot, work, drive back - maybe get some materials in between. You may have a lot of miles over the year, but per day - if you have a fast charger at your facility - that's totally viable. If you try to haul across country, no, you are right - no business can afford (or is it a Ford?) to have their workers take a 45min break every 250 miles.
Anyone that has ever done > 1,000 miles of driving in a single day can see an OBVIOUS problem.
Anybody doing that much towing is buying an f-250+ anyways so any f150 gas or electric wouldn't be on their radar
@@klaushuxley3342 Right. Use scenario, as I said. Local businesses don't all have that - and if they do, they won't use a vehicle like that.
What you describe as the "problem" is not the use scenario. That's like saying that there is an obvious problem using a Fiat 500 as a construction towing vehicle.
@@Thoringer Ignore the F150 aspect and consider the push for ALL vehicles to become electric. This will drastically limit the ability for people to travel long distances.
@@klaushuxley3342 I literally published research on this a couple years back - actually twice. Once at the PAA (Population Association of America) and the SDA (Southern Demographic Association) as part of my Demography PhD - and my thesis I am currently working on is on population mismatch to charging stations.... long story: It is about infrastructure.
The tech vehicles have scale with that. That's not uncommon for vehicles. Electric vehicles were common in the 1910s and 1920s because the infrastructure for gasoline was not ready - and we will see the reverse in the coming years.
That SRT is freaking cool!

Your most enjoyable video for a while. Really good to watch.
This was a good video. It made the EV Lightning acceptable when you're reminded the original gasoline Lightning also sucked as a truck. But it still affirms to not purchase the EV Lightning if you need a real truck for real truck jobs.
The old lightning was still rated at 5000 pounds towing and could easily handle it. I just seen another video where the new lightning was towing a 5500 pound camper and got 80 miles. That's just a complete waste.
Electric cars, even trucks will be the future. I have never understood why so many Americans need a pick up, when never transporting anything, or when transporting small things which can easily fit in a station wagon, not talking about the fuel economy.
@@marius2971 idk where you live, but here in the country I haul constantly. Wood one way, trailer back, gravel next, dirt, you name it.
@@grahamwelch3045 I live in Germany and hauling a trailer is no problem with a station wagon. Average John living in the outskirts of some city will use his F-150 twice in his life😂
@@marius2971 A large % of americans use trucks for work, We have a significant population living rurally, and rural here is usually much more rural than Europe. The UK for example is 8 times more population dense than the US. You wont see many trucks in the city, a little more in suburbs, and rural trucks are probably a majority. Then you have people like me who just like driving a truck. Always have the bed whenever i need it, Im not paying for both a truck and a car. (im actually driving a hybrid camry atm sold my truck it was old) So my next vehicle will probably be an electric truck. My usecase makes them ideal. But most people go camping. 100+ miles each way to get to a decent campground for most people makes EV trucks garbage for that.
I wonder what it’s towing range in the desert
I bet the lightning couldn’t even tow my boat to the lake 100 miles away, such a brilliant piece of technology
Actually it really is. Crazy how ford did this when it was hinted towards and electric f150 3 years ago
I just fell in love with that SRT10 CE. I emailed them on it right after watching your video last night. I went and looked it over in person today.
Didn’t sleep a wink last night , stayed up researching SRT10s way way to late last night.
Since Bob and Becky were out of the office today, we struck a deal on it over the phone earlier tonight.
Can’t wait to get her home and park it next to my White Ram TRX.
Thanks for another great show.
If someone steals your Lightning, just follow it for a few minutes and it will run out of juice.
Always good to see my favorite truck channel with new content! But seriously my neighbor is a contractor and loves his lightning. He doesn't tow but he uses it as a generator when needed.
This is actually a good point, maybe that is why lightning is only offered in crew cab short bed, because atm we can't really use it focused on Towing or hauling
85% of all new trucks are sold in this family configuration. It's 90% in Canada.
The only people that by long bed, short cab models are specifically contractors and such that don't carry passengers.
I had a dumb, stupid, useless Dodge Dakota R/T. Now I have an intellegent, eloquent, usefull truck (21 F150 Powerboost hybrid) and I still miss the R/T.

@@Welcometofacsistube I had to stop looking for a replacement. I am in a career now where I have to transport a K9 in my vehicle, and the dumb, stupid, useless trucks don't have a place in my life anymore because they simply don't work for my mission requirements now.
There was a GMC Syclone that used to run around my town. QWK-TRK was the plate. I'll never forget how back on the 90s it blew the doors off my 1971 Olds 442. I used to see it driving around for years after that. Crazy that they are getting that much for them at Auctions now.
I'd take the Syclone all day long over the others!
Same.
Love seeing the Syclone in the background. Will be sad to see it go
Cyclone is incredible!Remember seeing one in the showroom when they came out.Shouldve bought it.Great fun toy truck!Wouldve been a great investment.
The Lightning fits a segment of truck buyers. Yes it can tow, but should it. Pull your boat a few miles to the lake, yes. Haul a car across country, no. This is a first gen offering. We are not there yet, but it is amazing for what it can do.
Just gonna put this out there as an owner of a 1 owner all original Syclone... they are far from DUMB or USELESS. They were monsters of their day and made a HUGE effect on the automotive world. It wouldn't really truck, but it wasn't really ever supposed to be.
GM thought the Corvette was holy. Nothing could touch the Corvette and its mighty V8 and no other brand would be allowed make a competitor. When Buick and GMC asked to put the turbo V6 in the Regal and Sonoma/Jimmy, upper management said "it's only a V6? Fine, the Corvette is safe."
@@bwofficial1776 exactly and GMC had no car platform to put it in so, not even in the same segment as a corvette. Unfortunately there were so few of them made/sold and those that were usually didn't end up doing hooligan stuff 😉 .... at least until a few owners later
Another great truck review video. Way to go Hoovie 😂
I guess Hoovie got a cease and desist from Ford so he made this video to protect himself.
I HIGHLY doubt they’d send a cease and desist for him sharing his experience with a vehicle he purchased.
More than likely it was a video to show InfoWars that not only EV trucks are terrible at towing (for now). 🤣
Probably not a cease and desist exactly but it's obvious someone got a hold of him
@@krsjames1 The problem is that Ford advertised the truck as a do it all replacement for the standard f150. Even showing towing in the ads. The other trucks shown where never marketed to do that.

You’ll win the long race when the Lightening has to recharge and you keep driving past them 😊
Tortoise vs hare
The biggest difference is that the GMC and the Dodge were built as special edition vehicles, the lightening has been marketed as the new F series to handle all the duties of the original trucks and better, and it does not.
👏👏👏👏
No, it is another option if you're looking at an F150 or other full size truck. It's not meant to be the end all, be all truck and no one will ever need a gas or diesel truck again. If it doesn't work for you, guess what there's F150s with gas motors still!

Tyler this feels like a justification/apology/way to save the reputation of the truck?
Looks like the talk from the Ford Woman was successful.
There was a drywall guy my dad used years ago that used an SRT10 for his work truck. Guy was never late to a job and hauled a trailer with it almost every day
It’s all in the marketing the SRT and Syclone never marketed themselves as regular truck replacements. They were shown and known to be performance centered trucks that could do some truck stuff. The Lightning is marketed as the new generation of truck.
exactly. theres a big difference between claiming to be a useful truck and claiming to be fast and just so happening to look like a truck.
Props to you for being willing to change EuroAsian Bob's name back to what it's supposed to be. What good friends y'all must be for that conversation to have not been weird or awkward!
Don't you mean urination Bob?
I was ever so slightly hoping to see Bob standing in the back near the bushes, just to "ruin" Tyler's serious ending to the video.
If only he would have honored Rob’s wish without doing a bit about it.
14:52 I don’t think this is a valid replacement for a tradesman (construction, electrician, etc.) looking to use this on a job site, but you are correct in that is how they have marketed it. I do think though that it’s a valid replacement for what most truck buyers would actually use it for; family vehicle with the occasional trip to the home improvement store. And that’s exactly why I want one because I fit into that use case. 😜
Also excellent for camping in the local mountains, or dropping a block off at the machinist's. Not everyone tows with their truck. I would guess it is the exception that uses their truck for towing.
Think about a fleet of these for say a electrician. How would you charge 10 to 15 of these at night? You would need a transformer
Ok the only important factual thing you said is that they are being deceptive in their advertising. Yes thank you
@@philipparana9225 it won't work in some cases, but what percentage of trucks are sold to electrician fleets? Pleas be real. Most trucks sold in the U.S. are grocery getters. Buy a Cummings, if you plan to tow. The vast majority of trucks on the road can be replaced with this truck. I say this as someone that uses an EV to commute over 600 miles per week (at a cost of $16.80/week in electricity (not counting my solar)). I would love to have a EV truck as a second car for our weekend camping trips to the local mountains.
I'm a car guy (I work on my own cars, unlike this guy), and I have never towed a car more than 75 miles. I still drive my first car that is over 60 years old.
@@daredelvis I'm saying any business fleet that is more than 2 of these is going to need a transformer to charge them simultaneously
i love hoovies garage extensive well researched towing tests. keep it up brother
I love your videos and you are spot on with the problem of the lightning...but...stick with me here Hoovie... the Lightning is 1000% better than anything similar except for you can't go far. If you are doing 100 miles round trip, you have to agree... this electric truck blows away everything else similar. Living in NY I rarely go further than 60 miles roundtrip in a day, and could easily use this to haul and pickup anything I ever needed better than anything else on the road. then charge it up all night and do it again.
The other trucks were created out of passion, EV's are created out of mostly unwanted necessity. Ultimately until we can realistically see an EV truck being used every day as a construction worker or contractors truck (imagine one in the rust belt) they are not ready to take over. We are a long ways away from that happening IMO especially since they aren't even ready to be daily drivers, I mean the infrastructure to support them is in an even worse state. Love ya Hoovie, but not the new Lightning as I don't personally think driving a cell phone with wheels is enjoyable. Thanks again for another great video.
What % of those contractors drive over 200 mi a day are aren't parked back in their home overnight 99% of the time? Just one of the things non EV owners get hung up on, is thinking the majority of people are doing multiple hundreds of miles of driving day after day. And of course just getting into your garage and plugging in whenever you want vs any extra stops to drip gas around and slide credits cards in -15F temps in MN or 110 in PHX. In reality when you own an EV, vast majority of your charging is at home, often (like me) at highly discounted off peak rates and rarely even need DC chargers but for when road tripping. Of course that's already doable as is, but Fed gov just put more $ into chargers and infrastructure than ever before so will be much better soon as more EVs hit the road.......but still rarely need to even use them. Costs me $3.24 to get 317 EPA rated miles. Just insane what people are paying for similar driving in gas. And a V8 pickup vs EV the difference would even be more insane, saving thousands a year.
I want a truck that is faster than most sports cars, is cheaper to run than a compact car and won't pollute the air in my neighborhood or give my kids cancer from exhaust fumes. Just because you don't want it doesn't mean a large buyer base doesn't want it.
@@laflfran1 Exactly. Most people, and many children (who seem wiser about climate and EVs than some adults) want that.
My SUV EV is quicker than a Countach, full 315mi charge for less than a gallon of gas, and like using an iPhone in 2007 while most people were still on flip phones and blackberries. They just don't know what they don't know.
Ford should take note! :)
I agree with you on the 'making it fun' part so as to have better press coverage
He got notes from ford ;)
Hoovie, they are novelty trucks. One of my cousins in Canada, her ex owns a Bumble Bee edition Crew cab with the auto trans. That itch be the quickest acceleration I've ever felt. With a toe flexing. He has it as his sunny summer Sunday cruiser. Any clouds and it stays home.
Rumble bees only came in regular cab and no performance upgrades, just decals
For a guy like me - who just needs to haul stuff from Home Depot and pull my boat back and forth to the ramp - that Lightning would be perfect.
The viper truck and the cyclone were sold as sport trucks and people knew what they were getting
The ford wants to be sold as all purpose truck that’s the difference
Yep and the sports trucks had character. These EVs are a sterile and look like a bar of soap. So exciting. 😢
I noticed you calling the Syclone a lightning when showing the launch. Odd
I love the channel and enjoy everything you do, including this video. However, I think calling the Lightning dumb and useless is unfair. Sure, it’s not a hauler but lots of folks use trucks as transportation and to haul their gear in the bed to a job site. While I don’t have statistics my hunch would be that most folks would have plenty of range using the Lightning. I had a SR+ (220 mile range) Tesla model 3 and it worked fine for me. I took a job that requires more driving and upgraded to a Long Range model 3. I am strongly considering a Lightning for our second car- currently a Model Y. As long as it’s used locally and charged at home it should be a good fit
They need to put Flintstone pedals in it to extend the range

Ford really seems to be missing the mark on some of these vehicles, just like with the E-Mach Mustang, that vehicle would be so much better received if it wasn’t being associated with the Mustang name!
Ok so EV swap that syclone to make it as fast, or faster, than the lightning
A ground up Ridgeline-sized EV pickup is what I'm waiting for, like a Rivian but from a legacy manufacturer; probably Hyundai/Kia as they are doing really well in the EV market right now, and have clearly devoted a lot of resources to it.
Initial drafts of the Tacoma ev look pretty promising. Just a regular taco with fancy lights.
You want it from Hyundai and Kia so that it can be stolen with a simple screwdriver and USB cable, because both are such atrocious companies that they cheap out on important things like an immobilizer or an ignition switch?
Hard pass. They have continuously demonstrated that they're the same cheap company that they were decades ago, they've just done a better job at putting on makeup to disguise that fact.
The Ridgeline ev will run on GM EV technology. Do with that info what you want.
I can see a Santa Cruz ev version in our near future
Sounds like an EV version of the Ford Maverick.
I think it's excellent at doing all things trucks are used for except towing and long distance travel. If they can keep the price as low as the gasoline one, I can see it being incredibly popular as fleet vehicles for moving people/equipment around plant facilities, farms, etc (short distance stuff). For those types of uses, fuel is not only more expensive but much more of a pain in the ass 'cause you either have to drive them off site to fill up or add a fueling facility to your property. There's also increased reliability to consider, as well.
Most people who buy trucks NEVER use it as a "truck". Been that way for 40 years.
And Ford recently announced yet another MSRP increase on the sticker of the Lightnings. When a truck that is supposed to do stuff for Fred Average but NOT necessarily be his daily driver 81K+ is a bit steep. There are just too many downsides to a battery powered, full size pickup to make The Lovely Bride and I consider trading for one at this point in time.
