  • After a quick train ride from Brasov to Sinaia, join us to enter Peles Castle.
Peles Castle is a neo-Renaissance castle located in Sinaia, Romania. It was commissioned by King Carol I of Romania in the late 19th century and was completed in 1883. The castle served as the summer residence of the Romanian royal family until the monarchy was abolished in 1947.
The castle was designed by several European architects, including Johannes Schultz and Karel Liman. Its architectural style is a blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance elements, and it features intricate woodcarvings, beautiful stained glass windows, and impressive works of art.
Peles Castle has been witness to several important historical events, including the signing of the Treaty of Bucharest in 1913, which ended the Second Balkan War. The castle has also hosted several important guests, including Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.
Today, Peles Castle is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Romania, attracting 250-500thousand visitors each year who come to admire its beautiful architecture and explore its stunning interiors.

Sinaia is technically not in Transylvania, it's part of the "Old Kingdom", as we call it in Romania, i.e., part of Romania before the great unification with Transylvania. There's an anecdote saying that some counsellor asked the king 'Why do you want to build the castle so close to the border?', to which he replied: 'It's close to the current border but smack in the middle of the territories inhabited by Romanians. One day this spot will be in the heart of Romania'.

Much of Sinaia and the Castle "look Bavarian" because the king was of German origin, from Hohenzollern dynasty. Before the formation of Romania by the union of the Voivodates (Principalities) of Wallachia and Moldavia, these Romanian smaller regions formed in medieval times were more recently ruled by so called Greek Phanariot nobles that were often (Christian Orthodox) Puppets of the Ottoman empire. The true Romanian nobles not being on throne for decades if not hundreds of years, so these houses were more or less eroded in time, their offsprings eventually being more or less ordinary folk that maybe don't even know their roots, or at very least are not recognize in the wider Europe as such. This is where the "new" Romanian Dynasty of king Carol, formed from prestigious houses like Hohenzollern, recognized and related to pretty much all European dynasties comes in. It gave the younger union into Kingdom of Romania even more recognition in Europe and more or less set the country on the path of uniting all majority Romanian territories.
    Cheers.

@@teepsfam interesting as I have been to neither but probably would prefer Peles Castle being an older person but I agree they both look tremendous. I went to Romania for the first time in March 23 and only spent a few days there but was very impressed and totally different to what I had thought it might be like. Their food….. I am in love with Papernasi

Well as Romanian I don't think there is a comparison here as one is a Jewel of art while the other was initially a border Fortress, guarding the entrance into what was Transylvanian Saxons dominated trade route. I think also Bran castle was first built by Knight Templars if I recall it right... and while Peles is a more modern Castle that is intended to be royal residence, its beauty is just on a different level.
Also Bran Castle's origins and history are actually cooler than what is fakely advertised as "Dracula Castle", but Im sure this does wonders specially around Halloween they get crazy amounts of high tier visitors and parties apparently, money talks.
