MIss Moore is not human! On the TV clip of this song, she does a little reprise and ends, I think belting a high "A"? or something just as crazy! AMAAAHHHHHZING!
This was the show-stopper number. I saw this on Bway when I was very young. The audience went nuts. They did 3 or 4 encores of this in the middle of the show. Melba Moore was just amazing, complemented very nicely by Cleavon Little as Purlie, and Sherman Hemsley as "Uncle". A lot of great music in the show with a bit of a tepid story line. All the same, I often wondered why this hasn't been revived.
I was there in 1970, I still remember the night, the smile never left my face whenever Melba took the stage. They were all just perfectly wonder, The vision of Melba’s performance still brings a great feeling of joy and an eternal smile. I think the tickets were around $10- 12.
Seth I love you critique obsession and how you present! I've been just wowed by Melba's voice instrument but your entertaining way of pinpointing her techniques was so enjoyable! I want watch more of You!💋
BTW, did you know this was the last song written for the show, shortly before it opened? PURLIE is literally inconceivable without this song, which makes a previously pleasant and agreeable show take off like a rocket.
I have loved this show and particular song since I was a kid. I have had it on my iPod for years and whenever I hear it when I'm running, I have a whole choreography in my head with me belting it out, of course. I didn't know anyone else who has loved this song like I have Seth, thank you!!!
I think a lot of these examinations miss the point that she is ACTING in this song! I have always thought that a lot of things that may seem odd ("honey," and the churchy style), but what I saw and heard was a sweet young girl from Dothan, Alabama. With a phenomenal voice.
Ok, I love this video. I have been telling people about this show, and how much it needs a revival, so I went looking online for "I Got Love", and I see this- Fantastic deconstruction, and lip-syncing! Thanks so much for this!
Seth's "white boy"ness oozes through on this one. I'm loving it. But, I sense someone needs to take him to Church... and I do not want to see him dancing to Motown at a club with an oldies DJ. But still, amazing analysis.
Just discovered Seth tonight; so far I've watched seven of his videos in a row. So funny and musical... and bright? Ya think? ("I go to shu-u-u-l. Synagogue.") But best of all is how he parses the music. Watch this guy!
The three greatest female musical voices of all time (in no particular order): Elaine Paige in Evita Betty Buckley in the London Promises Promises Melba Moore in Purlie I will never forget how Moore belted I Got Love right out of the cavernous Broadway Theater from 57th St. all the way down to Battery Park. Thanks for the terrific analysis, Seth. Let me know when you're in Tel-Aviv next time.
The one thing about this album is the awful way the drums were recorded -- way too much space around them and they sound sloppy and bleed all over everything. It's a real shame that bad engineering like that can't be fixed later, because otherwise it is practically flawless.
good music but this break down and all the commercials interrupting the play kinda sucks. too bad money gets in the way of presenting art in its purity.
Still listening to Melba in 2020! Thank you!
Evan she is crazy talented. I can't stop singing this song. I'm going to sing it at work tomorrow. What joy.
O.G. goosebumps 🦆
I have listened to it 100s of times that is soooo true

Jonathan this is an amazing song...perfect ...and her execution brings smiles, tears and chills.

Thank you!! I love Ms Melba and Purlie was the first Broadway show I saw.
I had this album as a kid and love this song in particular - thanks for bringing it back to my attention!
this was so much fun to watch as it brought back wonderful memories of seeing MELBA MOORE in person with this show in 1970!

The most amazing thing about this performance for me was how she shows how amazing she is while staying true to the character.
seth…you are joyous to watch and listen to.
I love how Seth mouths along with the lyrics, I do the exact same thing!

Seth you should've said, melba didn't become well known until disco came in
Some of us knew about her because of "Hair!"
Melba can hold a A5 for like 30 secconds or more hahahha she has a song where she holds it for ever, even sounds like a mosquitou.
Knew I knew this song from somewhere when I saw it on Smash. HA!
And then there's the time she takes the end note up a few steps and holds it. And holds it. And holds it. ruclips.net/video/0oFZV7fAbaE/видео.html
How did you feel about J Huds version?
