    I learned this as an apprentice in Germany 20 years ago. Erode machine or Wire Cutting it’s called over there. Extremely precise

    It's pretty impressive how that cube is made. That one that demonstrate how air tight they are is cool that they can manufacture it to such tight tolerances.

    Without an edm machine our cnc shop would be nowhere. Things are a lifesaver for precision form tools

    It’s important to understand the time this process takes. Good machines cost well over $250K. So it is rarely used for production.

      We had three of them. All of the ID of our pharmaceutical dies were cut this way. They are used everywhere for production.

      @@ThePerpetualStudent Please study DFM. Yes WEDM & REDM are used to produce tools for mass production. But the process is too slow to spit out components for consumer use.

      My old tool and mold shop had 5+ of them. There is also electrode EDM. :)

      @@saturnmedia1 correct. This is aka as “RAM EDM where the electrode is made from graphite or copper alloy electrode. Common practice for over a century now.

      You can see the glint off the cut going in to make the shape.
      Same cut for inbound and outbound.

    How do you cut irregular shapes and curves with the wire edm?

      Wire edm has to cut on a strait line between two points. You can do simple curves like a cylinder but complex curves like a sphere arent its thing. If you need a complex shape in automated production i think you need a 4 or 5 axis.

    Amazing! Not sure it qualifies as zero tolerance. Probably extremely close and I bet that little cube of metal now cost 5 or 600 bucks, if not more. Cant do this on typical mills or lathes

      @@jeepmanxj yes Egyptians were around for a long time... yes Egyptians knew a hell of a lot more about engineering than us currently. We cannot replicate what they did. So that means they knew something we don’t.
      Smarter than us? Probably not, human brain has remained largely unchanged up until recently.
      Maybe use a little more power next time.

    Well, it doesn't really melt away the matereal. Electric Discharge Machining gets so hot at the electric arc location that it Litterally vapourises the matereal

      @@fletchro789 believe me I know lol, like fiberglass but scarier. I would be extremely careful and surround the area with plastic as to not spill any. But the benefits of really good heat transfer really outweighs the downsides for my situation

      Tap water is too conductive, so it would short the circuit and the electrified wire would no longer serve its purpose.

    That's not zero tolerance there's no such thing. A wire edm like this typically can hold a tolerance of about .0002 inches if used by an operator that knows what they are doing with the programming and setup.
