this is super practical and sounds great...after suckling at the teat of your generous free lessons for a few years, I'm glad I have just invested in the full membership.
It's worth it people. I've never busted out of my own lil' limited palette, hackneyed personal cliches faster.
Welcome to the membership!
One of the best practical applications of the Dorian mode I've seen. Straightforward and concise but with great info, well done.
Right on, thank you for watching!
Coming back to watch.
I subscribed.
you once again knocked the cobwebs out.....i have been playing with the sixth jump idea on mixolydian and dorian all day. solved a problem i was having with a song . i have to set up my skype i have no video cam for my mac yet. i will soon. out of all the lessons on you tube i really connect with you. i cannot thank you enough. sincerely, geoff Reno Nv.
Thanks Geoff, were practically neighbors, I'm in Vegas, if you ever come this way you can do an in person lesson :)
Rick this is such a great lesson. You have such a clear approach to some complex ideas it makes application easy for me.thank you
Right on, thank you for watching
Really helpful, jumping intervals really takes you to another level. Thanks from Brazil!!
thank you for watching!
Thanks Rick, I’ve played Dorian using harmonised triads but never thought about it using the sixth thing. You have given me some more information. Thanks again
happy to hear this, thanks for watching!
Refreshing approach in presentation...great stuff!
Thank you for watching Doug!
Man that concept opened my mind.
+Austin Hall you can get some really nice melodic ideas out of this approach
Great stuff! Very informative and easy to understand. Now I need to use it. :D
Thank you! Yep, putting it to use right away is the best way to retain it.
Wow. I’ve not seen this approach before. Thank you
can get some great licks using this!
How the hell have I only just found this channel.
I love it.
thanks Jerry, enjoy the book!
Very properly named channel. Tasty riffs indeed!
thank you Patrick!
Awesome Rick! I've been playing many, many years. Went to Berklee for a short season back in the 70's. I know all the theory, and use many of these ideas. But this has opened up a door in terms of building off the mode. I have usually relied on my ear this will give me a tool in my practicing. Thanks!
TastyGuitar.over and over again.
Perfect! Well done!
Simple to digest and tasty indeed.
thank you, be sure to subscribe, new vids posted weekly

Yes I did, & I am being more thankful to you for your fantastic lesson Sir .
Great lesson
fantastic
im starting to hear it
a minor d brilliant
The melodies follow the rule of tonal harmony where you jump an interval and return stepwise
Nice sounds.
thank you!
Hi, thank you for your great lessons. I'd really appreciate it if you could do more lessons on breaking out of the standard pentatonic box and spicing up blues playing etc... also just more soul licks would be great.
+SaintMiddleton will do
melodical....never heard that word....but sure sounds good
its all about hearing where you are
Great video. That gives me a bit to chew on. I would love a lesson on lydian dominant with an easy way to get it in my ear and under my fingers.
+MrJoeyBoombotz good suggestion, stay tuned
Awesome!
Jerry Park thanks for watching!
I bought your eBook yesterday, that's what I exactly needed. :D
I am hearing a Steely Dan feeling in there!!So i have to learn my Dorian scale in all 5 positions before triing this out right??
Excellent video, thank you. Question, is the Dorian mode played only over the 2 chord in a major key, over any chord in a major key or only over minor chords?
When you start playing the sixth it sounds like Slaughter on 10th ave.(The Ventures)
Damn. That is all. Moving on.
Nice, but I would tell people that if you don't understand how to build diatonic chords, you'll never really understand modes. 7 notes, 7 chords, 7 modes. Understand how to relate each mode to the major scale it derives from and the diatonic chord in that scale. When I finally figured this out, I was so angry that no one ever explained that to me before. Anyway, your videos are great, thanks!
Hi :)
I'm curious about arpeggios using 2,4,9,11,13 extensions
and something about phrasing with characteristic scale degrees
because what is called "characteristic" is also called avoid note.
So to get the character of the chosen mode
I must emphasize notes which I should avoid - complete nonsense for me :(
characteristic notes for each modes:
c ionian - 4&7 degree (f,b)
d dorian- 3&6 degree(f,b)
e phrygian - 2&5 (f,b)
f lydian - 4&7 (b,e)
g mixo. - 3&7 (b,f)
a aeolian - 2&6 (b,f)
b locrian - 2&5 (c,f)
How to get ionian atmosphere with C major chord in background
using f and b notes which are avoid notes?
1 - How to arrange chord progressions
to having atmosphere of chosen mode:
ionian progression,dorian prog.,etc
of course including such issues as
a - diatonically,b - with modal interchange :)
I think this is a topic for many very interesting videos :D
2 - How effectively increase our music vocabulary???
What you know about
“… creative and improvisational techniques musicians use for
style, phrasing, solo development, and motivic improvisation”.
PS. What kind of progression is this?
zapodaj.net/images/1a1f9a10316e3.png
Could You help me? :)
Dm | G7 | Cmaj = ii V I
but how about
Am7M | G#madd11+ | C7Madd13+ | Badd13-
Do you know any songs in which there is this progression?
Which chords should we play using this A dorian mode?
Am Bm Cmajor Dmajor Em F#dim G major
Hey Rick,
Thanks for another helpful and informative episode!
I've been viewing your videos for a while now and have always been enchanted by your tone. As somebody quite new to electric guitar, I was wondering if you could detail some of the steps you take towards achieving such a "tasty" tone!
Kind regards,
Benjamin.
Thanks, I wish I could say there was a lot of thought going into the tone here but there isn't really....I'm just using the onboard processor on a Yamaha mixer, no amp, no pedals, just a little eq and reverb....I prefer a slight breakup on my clean tone to give a little edge but other than that just an even tone with not too much lows, highs or mids seems to do the trick for me
So jazzy/groovy.....maybe even tasty? ;)
when you start on the A note are you just running up the scale using the Ionion scale or the Dorion?
everything in this lesson was using A Dorian
First comment
boring
thats because you such a musical genius ......there would be no music if it wasnt for you Mosart huge head...
