I find it kinda surprising yall didnt notice, but like 3 times throughout the movie, Haru walked by the tv, and the serial stabbings were always being mentioned. It was being foreshadowed, oh so subtly.

That goes to show u the event didn't happen for shock value, it was hinted to happen😔

At the end of the movie it isn't Kyoko and Haruki that are dating, it's Gum boy and Kyoko, which is why Kyoko had the gum.
Also, that "Storybook art" was an imitation of the Little Prince's art. The Little Prince was Sakura's favorite book.

I went into this movie saying "I already know the girl dies and that it's sad but I'll watch it ig" only to have all of my expectations subverted throughout the entire movie. The first scene being her funeral already threw me off and I ended up loving the moving. Glad to see yall watched it.
Edit: For those saying I spoiled the movie for them, i didn't spoil anything lmao, they show she dies in the first 5 seconds of the movie, relax. Also idk why ppl who haven't seen the movie are even watching the video to begin with, much less reading the comments 💀. Go away heathens.

The gut-punch this movie delivers us by subverting our expectations on how she dies is truly amazing. It's so subtle too because it was just barely established in a backround news story that there was a murderer/serial killer roaming the streets stabbing young women but its so quick and unassuming that you don't really even notice it and yet it establishes that she didn't just get killed randomly, it was setup the entire time.
funny thing is its foreshadowed, if you take notice how many times in the background stabbing incidents were mentioned!
the "can i cry now?" line to me is equivalent to Ishida's(a silent voice) promise to be better and to look others in the eye when he's holding on to shouko at the balcony

@@lance_medul Yeah maybe some thing for people of Japan they were also hard subbed and small subtitles with both English and Japanese (though I can get subs online but they won't remove the hard subbed subtitles) and perhaps I will enjoy and learn written Chinese a little in this way

A bit of correction: The dating part after the post credit scene is between the girl and the bubble gum guy not Haruki. Haruki is just friends with them and trying to patch them up.

I remember watching this film, and i immediately read the light novel and it still broke me. You get more of his thoughts and just their relationship was so good.
Really makes you think that you truly never know when you're going to die, and it was such a good message.

My eyes watered up a few times but the scene that absolutely crushed my soul is when Hiruki said "Can I cry now".
I was a flood of tears the second those words came out of him.
I remember when I first heard of this movie I thought someone was actually eating a pancreas
at this point Sheera is gonna be like okay its time for the eternal Tsukuyomi and everyone is gonna accept it cause thats just fate taking its course.
This is one of my favorite movies for many reasons -- the well-done execution; the cry scene, and the letter scene's subtle references to The Little Prince (my favorite book). Glad you enjoyed it!

I just rewatched this a couple of weeks ago and once again realized what a fantastic and impeccably executed movie this was. This story isn't just sad but layered and meaningful, glad to see you guys appreciated it.

Probably one of my favorite anime romance movies. I wrote a paper on this for my foreign film class so i had to rewatch it, and in the paper i basically talked about the whole difference between his attitude on life and her attitude and how the film uses light and shadow to depict the differences, etc. probably the only paper i've actually 100% enjoyed writing. Just realized how many little things there were that added to the story.

Such a bitter sweet movie, with a strong message. Every day is as important as any other day. Life is so fragile, it is a shame to let is pass you by without trying new things... bonding with people. She helped him probably more than he did help her.
I liked this movie very much because it made actually emotional in a long time, it even was my driving point to read The Little Prince that was just gathering dust in the shelves 😌😌
Love the reaction as usual! I usually am wrong when I watch things, but this time I felt like Sheera watching this movie. For example the stabbing, Haruki's name being related to spring, etc.
I feel like her getting killed by something random was actually really beautiful in it's own right, though. Like, you spend the whole movie knowing she's going to die. Our main protagonist also spends all that time counting down the days until the illness takes over. And her dying before the illness gets to her, it just further signifies just how meaningful every moment we have with our loved ones is. Because you DON'T know when that last day is going to be, no one is guaranteed even one more day. And often times people get so wrapped up in the sadness and pain of realizing that they are going to lose a loved one, they forget that no one is guaranteed 1 more year to live. All the illness does is make life mean more significant, because suddenly life is on a timer...but that's the funny thing. LIFE IS ALWAYS ON A TIMER. Any one of us could go at any point, and them ending the movie like that was really significant to me. I really love the symbolism in this movie
Agreed. And at the same time it wasn’t too random. The way she died was foreshadowed throughout the movie, every time he went home the news would be talking about serial stabbings.

Yow wanted to clear something up because this is the most misunderstood part of the movie.
Haruki and Sakura's bestfriend weren't together. They are just friends.
When she throw the gum to him, Haruki asked if she liked "gums"
she answered "I took a liking of it recently" (she meant the gum boy who always give gums)
Haruki realized it thats why he said "so thats how it is"
and then Sakura's bestfriend said "Well we won't be dating after we finish entrance exam" (She still meant the gum boy in the WE part)
I know it's been a year already but just in case anyone doesn't know this, Kyoko (Sakura's friend) does NOT and never end up with Haruki. They're just always friends.
She canonically ends up with Miyata (the guy she used to quarrel with, the one who liked chewing gum), as seen by the sequel novel "To My Father and Someone In My Memories", which took place roughly at least 12 years after the anime.
In the novel, Haruki had a daughter with an unnamed woman (who doesn't show at all in the novel, afaik, so idk if she's even in their life).
This is the one that will hit home😭

This anime left me dead inside for an entire week. Even now everytime I remember it, it just makes my soul want to cry. Probably the saddest anime I have ever seen yet.

It actually hits way harder. I have seizures and the doctors don't know what's causing it then I got a specialist and I found out I'm gonna live till 30 as a kid I wanted to do so much and grow old to see my children grow up but I can't I wanted them to have a father a good one I never grew up with a dad so I want my kids to have one to have a good dad but I'm leaving early and there's nothing I can do to change that and my mom I can't imagine what she feels especially knowing her kid is gonna die before her. I watch anime like these to be grateful I have that much time left I'm 18 now and I feel I should be living to the fullest but I can't when I'm thinking constantly that I'm gonna die at 30 I just can't accept it which is why I fill my head with lies saying I am gonna live past 30 but deep down ik I'm not I have 4 older brothers and 1 younger sister I can't find a job or drive a car bec of my seizures so I can't spoil my younger sister she probably looks at me like a bum she's 16 with a job and can drive I'm here not able to get a job and drive and I can't do anything about it. The brother older than me is 2 yrs older and we grew up always together I found out a week ago he looks at me as his twin and that hit me deep I'm gonna let him down dying at 30

Having been hospitalized with pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, *not* a fun thing to have happen to you) on two separate occasions, this movie hits different for me.
