    Looking Awesome! by far my favourite of yours, but I do have a soft spot for biotype aquariums, I have a couple of ideas for you, try some of the other trees like the Callistemon or Melaleuca they would also add a great touch, you can also use Eucalyptus or any of those leaves as well but I alway collect them dead and boil them first to make sure they are safe, but they do last a long time so it's worth it, Banksia cones look good to and last for ages and give it a nice touch, this and the healthy plant growth will have a lot to do with keeping the algae down, my pool took awhile to settle down but once the plants took over it stayed clear, I love this tank! 🙂

      Thanks mate! You know, when I started adding the botanicals the algae just started dying off. I could be coincidence. It could be the cooler weather. But I love it. I saw a while back you did a Seary Creek with banksia cones? That looked beautiful.
      What I also noticed was a lot of plant growth sprouting without my help, once the leaves and biofilms started. Do you know what the clump of fine, but branching plant is in the main open shot of my tank? It’s from the Orara River, but was a byproduct of collecting the Hydrocotyl (?) . It has just shot up. I guarantee the rainbows will spawn in it this spring!

      @@australianaquarist I think it's Najas tenuifolia I get it in my ponds as well, a nice plant and a native, similar to Guppy Grass.

      @@australianaquarist I'm still working on my fish studio, but things keep coming up, this week I'll be doing some tanks for the Brisbane Ekka, I have kept them in the past and they are great to watch in a mangrove type tank, I want to do a tidal tank with some of them and Mud Skippers when my room is done, I haven't even been putting any videos up for awhile as I pinched a nerve in my back and it hurts spending to much time in the computer chair, luckily I can still lay down and watch others like yours, I shred it on one of my groups on Facebook for you so hopefully it will get you more subs 🙂

    I was going to write that adding a lot more plants in those hydro pots is going to help a lot with algae and nutrient removal, then reflected on a tank that I have where I did the same thing. Added a lot of terrestrial plants and now im having to fertilize the tank a lot because there is not enough waste etc from feeding to provide for them.
    It was a really loverly journey to watch the tank take thaat transformation, like whats happening with your one.

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  Год назад

      Thanks! Agreed. You would have noticed the random reeds sitting in the filter crate, waiting for a position in the tank. I was going to add more rushes, but I thought I’d let the existing ones mature. Also, let the casuarina do its thing. I’ve noticed some pale foliage on the casuarina, which could be a deficiency of trace elements. Could also be a problem related to the cold water the roots are in. I’m just practicing patience at the moment

    • @australianaquarist

      Mate go for it. The only hurdle for you would be with temperature management, if the tank is outside. Without the earth around the water body, it is very influenced by temperature swings. I know from sleeping as a 19 year old on the concrete outside the women’s toilet block at Ayer’s Rock , just how cold the nights get.

    Amazing tank! I love the natural look and high density of fish. Not a fan of super sterile freshwater tanks. If I ever went back to FW, I'd go back to rainbows and a look similar to your tank.

    Really loved this one mate - the terrestrial plants are really looking good! Curious as to whether that's C. cunninghamiana or if it could be C. glauca (hard to tell from the footage..)? They often get mislabed in nurseries...

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  Год назад +1

      No, Casuarina glauca has much coarser and robust foliage. As a mature tree it also gets branches growing at funny angles, though that’s obviously not applicable at this size. Thanks for wat bing the video

    Looks amazing. Will take alot of what you have done for future projects. I am interested to know where your basking area is for the turtles to dry out

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  Год назад

      I’m not sure if it was very obvious or not, but the larger logs breach the waters surface about half way down the tank. Here, I wedged a flat piece of driftwood. Only the short necks come out to bask. I’ve never seen the longneck basking. Maybe the longneck would prefer a soil bank to climb out on, which I can’t offer in this setup. Do you experience with basking eastern longnecks outside?

    Great update and an amazing tank. I'd love to replicate this on a smaller scale with a 6ft tank that I have which I'm not getting approval to setup inside the house. So an outdoor natural, rainbow fish tank would be incredible.

    Love this setup, do you intend to add another turtle and/or other species of rainbows local to your waterways or other local regions? Also what do you feed the turtle and fish?

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  Год назад

      I do want to add another 1-2 short necked turtles. The only other rainbow species locally found is Rhadinocentrus ornatus. I’ve got one in the tank, which I must have collected by mistake. In the past, I found them sensitive and not great mixed with the larger Melanotaenia species. The one fish is doing fine, so I may collect more. I’ll also add some Empire Gudgeon’s, an Eeltailed Catfish and possibly some more freshwater mullet.
      I use the 0.5mm sinking pellet from Frenzy Fish Feeds, as well as finely grated squid and pilchards. The turtles get the 6mm pellet, as well as what ever food I’m feeding the other tanks or my dogs! Squid, prawn, pilchard, kangaroo meat , offal

    • @australianaquarist
      @australianaquarist  11 месяцев назад

      Yes mate
      The glass is tempered and heat soaked. The thickness is 12mm , which if float glass wouldn’t be thick enough for this tank.
