Geez mate. This Fishroom will be looking a bit different in the next month. Just finished grinding and polishing the concrete floor last night. I’m sure it’ll be snazzy for when you get up to little old Coffs Harbour. You are welcome too.
Great setups. I too have collected tropical fish since the 80’s down the far south coast. The old section 37 permit was basic and didn’t involve all the garbage that they require this day and age. I’ve caught most tropical fish you see on the Great Barrier Reef, even got a baby clown trigger fish and a Ballina angelfish, conspicuous angel one year in Tathra. This year there was thousands of moorish idols.
Wow a Ballina Angelfish! The last few years have been pretty bad collecting around Coffs, with quite wet summers and chocolate coloured river water. I don’t see many angels, although have been told that there are about 3 centropyge species, as well as semicirculatus. I’ve only seen the semi’s twice and in difficult spots to collect. I’m yet to find a centropyge. There’s no better way of educating yourself on aquascaping, and fish ecology than getting underwater
@@australianaquarist agreed. I’ve caught quite a few centropyge Tibicen, and nox/vroliki. I think the current drops them all off down far south as it swings inwards to the coast. I like the pineapple fish and idols, but catch a lot of heniochus and chaetodons also. I’ve never seen a clown fish or anything like that, but have caught personifer angels.
Ok, yeah the keyhole and coral beauty’s are supposed to be common, and sometimes bicolour. We do get plenty of butterflies from chaetodon, but only the one Heniochus- schooling bannerfish. I’m not going to try to keep the moorish idols at this stage. One species I’d like to keep are eastern hula fish. I think they’d fit a macroalgae display nicely. They don’t really occur close to the coast here, unlike down south around Sydney. We can’t collect around the Solitary Islands
@@australianaquarist I’ve kept Eastern Hulafish & the Brauns from Esperance. There are some good temperate collectors in Victoria and Wa that you can buy things like Cowfish and sea dragons from.
I’d love to keep Shaws Cowfish. What is the name of the collector? My wife and I spent our anniversary on Tassie, and even looking into the shallow kelp got me excited!!
I’ve thought about taking the GoPro under with me. I’m always by myself, so I worry that the footage ( if the camera is strapped to me) would be a bit rough. I may still do
Thanks Jason. Very kind! Though there will be a big change for the coral soon. I’m getting tired of seeing coral “garden” tanks all over the media- it’s time for a more natural approach
@@australianaquarist I'm the same, when I had mine years ago it was more natural, I love the idea you had with making your own base rock, I'd much rather seeing natural looking coral bommies, as a diver you have that insight, the estuary tank looks good to, I did really want to see your freshwater outside but I guess that's for another video, I wish I had your kind of room, I haven't posted anything for awhile, I'm still working one my fish room and babying a sore back so it's getting there but slowly, you have given me some inspiration 🙂
I was realising that to get all the tanks on one video was going to make for a long video. I thought it better to keep them around 10 minutes max? I’m always conscious of trying to get things short and sweet!
@@australianaquarist I think your videos are interesting enough to make longer, I my self thought it was cut to short, it would help with your watch hours to make them longer, before I used voice over I found people would taper off but I think with you explaining everything it's quite interesting, keep them coming, I personally love them, if you find people aren't watching you can always make them shorter 🙂
Ultimately I’d like to replace the roller dollars with some glass sliding doors, and install air conditioning. I think that would be a lot easier for heating the tanks. Thanks for your support!
You are an inspiration to take my hobby to new levels. Must admit, I do not possess the same skill set as you, so I am saving this level for a few years down the road. I'm in the States, Georgia, but I have been considering a future move to the Hobart area.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. That’s very kind. There’s inspiration for us aquarists all around, and I’m glad to be able to help you. Don’t forget, the best inspiration comes underwater from nature herself, so get out and explore. When you get to Hobart , you’ll get a chance to set up an amazing aquarium for Cowfish!
You are the true king of DIY of Australia! Amazing what your able to do. Anyway, do you do water changes on your salt tanks? If so how? I live far away from Ocean and need to make my own salt with Reverse Osmosis water?
Mate that’s a big call! Anything is possible, when you devote time to learning and then just give it a go! I do my water changes with natural ocean water, which I pump from a high tide at my local harbour. I also run an RO but just for top off. Thanks for taking the time to comment. If you need to learn something, make sure to reach out and I’ll help as best I can
Hey Adam, what temperature do you run your estuary at? I like the idea of having a nice long tank with a mix of fish both tropical and temperate ish. I was thinking maybe 20-22 degrees so I could keep both warmer water species like acanthurus tangs and some cooler water guys like snappers and blue maomao.
When I had Monster in the tank I tried to keep it over 23 C . I’ve now turned the heaters off and it’s running between 20 and 22 C. Our current ocean temperature is 20c
No. I thought it to be a northern hemisphere species mainly from the Atlantic and Mediterranean? There are plenty of local Horned Blennys and Rippled Rockskippers, which I keep a couple of, but they don’t eat Aiptasia
Wow! New sub here. Very cool stuff. How do you keep the eels in the tank? I've always heard that Morays are super keen to leave the premises. Cheers, Chris Teaching kids about climate change and ocean acidification with corals in the classroom.
Yeah the do like to crawl out. When I first set the tank up , I installed an egg crate barrier around the perimeter. You can still see it along the back of the tank. I have found that with a tank this large, once they have settled and found their caves, they stay put. Thanks for your feedback and I’m glad you enjoyed the video
Understood. I was really just introducing the tank setup in this video. This leaves me able to make some specific videos on the fish in the future. Thanks for watching the video!
Google Section 37 Aquarium Collection Permit fisheries NSW, and you’ll be able to find the application forms. Not hard, just a little frustrating dealing with government regulations sometimes
Looks a lot different now!! Just in the process of polishing and sealing the concrete floor… finish Palau, move tanks, paint racks, build new plywood tank….
Hey mate absolutely love the video you post, where just up in port mac ourselves, would there be any possibility you could give me some advise into doing collection permit for private use i looked at applying a while ago as we want to make a local port display tank but the paperwork was so stressful when i got to the REF
Loved this video. I need to come and film you in an interview for my channel one day!

I certainly am! It’s kind of weird how all my life I’ve been obsessed with keeping life in glass boxes

Love the estuary tank man! Looks incredible! Love the mullet and trevally.
Thanks mate! The trevally is definitely one of my favourites too. Doesn’t bother anyone- just wants to swim and EAT!!!
@@australianaquarist Haha nice man, sounds just like my eel tail cat!
I actually went out to fish for a Tandanus the other night. I spotted plenty in the torchlight, but they wouldn’t take the bait.
@@australianaquarist Yeah they seem pretty hard to catch. When I was up in qld with angfa we attempted to sein net one but it still got away.
I can appreciate your aquariums and the effort youve put into them. enjoyed your video 👍
Thanks FreeSwimmer! Stay tuned for part 2

You should do a video showing your filtration. I love the DIY stuff and would like to see your skimmer.
Funny!… I’ve always ignored the tech stuff. I did record some footage of the sump build, but didn’t think it interesting enough!

How'd you build those tanks? Any vids? Its a great idea to break down old tanks and re-use the glass to make a bigger one
Yes Logan , there’s an in-depth video on my channel , that details building plywood aquariums.

If there is any steel integrated into the aluminum, it can cause galvanic erosion.
I think with the combination of scratched glass and the aluminium, I might rebuild the tank in the future. I’m just not sure how to convince my wife!
nice Tour, thank you for the inspirations! new sub for you and keep it up 👍
Thank you. I very much appreciate you taking the time to write. Stay tuned for part 2!!
Very nice setups! Subbed 🎉
Thanks so much!
Aluminium oxide generally never goes past surface. Need a low copper content aluminium extrusion to avoid what’s happening there,
Hey Thanks Randy. I’ll do some research on these aluminium extrusions for future builds

Is it hard to get a permit in nsw for collecting fish?
Google Section 37 Aquarium Collection Permit fisheries NSW, and you’ll be able to find the application forms. Not hard, just a little frustrating dealing with government regulations sometimes
Do you live in coffs harbour or just around it?
I’m in Coffs - North Boambee
have you tried acrylic instead of glass?
No
Acrylic isn’t very common or affordable in Australia. Actually, it’s rare, with the exception of reef sumps, to come across an acrylic tank
Are you sure that SW tank was 600 litres????
Which tank?
Ahh the one over the far side. Yes, it’s 1.4m x 0.9m x 0.6m high. The 3ft front to back makes the volume
