Nothing against but there are a couple of things that i think worth attention: 1- Carpe Iter Tablet not only is considerably more expensive than a Garmin Zumo XT, but also on their website they don't even say which chip for location they use (if it's only GPS, or if it has Galileo, Glonass, etc). 2- With Garmin XT you have maps from all Europe, you have a device really dedicated for navigation (regarding hardware), topographic maps and you can import other maps (you don't need to buy from Garmin), make your own tracks and set it up to follow what you want. Also, it's more reliable (regarding location on more remote areas than a phone since it's not just a device that also includes a location chip), and rugged than a smartphone. Screen is very good (resolution, brightness and responsive even with gloves) and can be used horizontally or vertically. Also you can pair it with an (expensive) Garmin InReach Mini which can be a life saver if you're on adventure alone. (Disclaimer: I am not defending Garmin; in fact, I do not defend any brand) 3- I'm from Portugal and i tried the app Drivemode Dashboard 2 weeks ago. Even thinking that's a good solution, 5.99€ for the Roadbook option plus 5.99€ each 6 months to topographic maps, it's not properly inexpensive. I agreed with you regarding using another phone just for navigation (I see people using their own phone which is not a smart decision in a case like you well mentioned), with the choices you have regarding navigation apps, and the with the Carper Iter controls which seems to be really nice.
This is by far the best explaination i have seen in favour of a smartphone as a gps unit! I have tried to navigate with a phone only, and the vibration killed my phone! The water on the screen was a pain when raining but i see locus map has a great solution to this 👏🏻🔥 really good video my friend. I think it is important to find a good solution to your own need’s and i really miss a option to use roadbook on my garmin. You almost convinced me to try a android phone again 😂
Thanks brother! Well, it's not perfect yet. I still have some cons to discover, like overheating etc in summer. I hear alot of people with vibration problems, but the camera on this device will never be used. Give me some time with Rally planning and you will have a yearly honorary pole position at the Nomad Rally.

@@frankpusch4616 I installed it in december so hard to test overheating yet :) And this is all related to the Samsung S9+ and not the focus of this video. As mentioned I chose a cheap phone but you could get a military graded phone or tablet which will be rugged and deal with both hot and cold. My Samsung S9 will not tolerate the hottest climates for sure.
@@NomadSweden I had an old Sony Z3. With about 35 degrees and normal usage the screen broke 2 times. I also have the S9+ now. Direct sunlight + charging - especially wireless + brightest display + steady navigation in towns and not on highways + no wind => you might have issues. Best to reduce some of the mentioned points for a certain time. Then for me no problems with hot temp despite it is not an outood smartphone Frank, Germany
Great video. Thank you. I have only one comment based on 75000km of phone navigating over a 2 year period in South America and Africa with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. It was FLAWLESS, except for the fact that after having the screen turned ON for so long, every day for 2 years, the AMOLED screen burn has now gotten so bad that it has made my $800 phone unusable. I cannot see anything on it anymore. From what I've read, this happens with ALL AMOLED screens, and the solution is to use a phone that has any other screen than an AMOLED screen. I just bought a cheap 7" phone with an IPS screen and while it's not a Samsung Galaxy, it works for my needs and I won't cry as much if it dies.

Coincidently, I've been reading a lot about the same opinion in various motorcyles forums from other riders about having a 2nd used phone on the bike for multiuses, maps, music, etc, or only 1 dedicated maps device, but always keep your original phone with you for worst case scenarios that you may end up separated from your bike. I've also watched already some videos on youtube about it too, but this one is the best one so far, what a brilliant and very informative video Robert, well done!! You can connect the wireless charger onto the contact when you turn the key. There is a cable on the right side of the tenere. Remove the fairing and you’ll see it close to the blinker.
As you said, you cannot cross the desert of Arabia fro’m dubai to Jerusalem with this solution. The gps would remain a better option maybe especially with the weather and the lack of internet connectivity in the middle of the dunes or the canyons. I have almost the same setup but some tips for some of you. The quad lock stuffed the image stabilisation on the iPhone 11 so I bought an iPhone 6+. The iPhone 11 was only 3 days old. (it was replaced under warranty) I also added the quad lock vibration dampener. I only use the 6+ for navigation but if I want to mount the 11 for around town then I can. I use HEMA maps primarily but sometimes need to navigate by road and use google for this. Much of our State does not have good or any mobile service so for this I use google offline maps. It navigates perfectly via the inbuilt GPS in all phones. open google maps while connected to WiFi >Click on your account (initial in top right corner) >Halfway down OfflineMaps >then select map and download
Great turtorial video! There are mobile devices that have a glove function. It works well with 3 seasons gloves, but it gets very difficult with thick winter gloves, but it is cheaper from the bluetooth controller. I have an old and cheap nowadays, Sony Xperia Z5 waterproof, with this glove function.

I'm glad to see someone advocating for a phone/tablet as GPS. I'm going with the 8" Galaxy Tab Active on the Lynx fairing dash for my KTM 690 Enduro. I don't know if I'll run your dashboard or not. The wireless charger is a brilliant solution! I want the tablet space for my old eyes AND to serve as my drone screen when flying the drone off of the bike (velcro the controller to the top of the tank bag and get an extended cord between the controller and the tablet is my idea). Thanks very much. A lot of great tips. Like you I’m a bit of a Nav Nerd. Like you I use old phone on Quadlock, but I also have small Garmin Hiking GPS on handlebars. It’s good having 2 devices at different scales. One has planned route, other is more for exploring off the main route. If one breaks, I have the other one.

That Carpe controller is a golden tip for me. As for Locus-pro: I have been using this for 7 years now for hiking, motorcycle rides, landscape photography, ... Locus-pro in combination with ofline vector maps is great, I never make a mobile connection for navigation. Those ofline vector maps of Europe (or more), I download them for a cup of coffee from a fantastic German guy. He renders these vector maps from open street maps with great detail and poi such as huts, barriers, ... too many to mention. The following outdoor maps are loaded on my Samsung S7: Scotland, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. These are the countries where I come at least twice a year if there is no corona. If this interests you, I will send you some screenshots of places or coordinates that you give me. The only downside to navigating with a mobile phone is that it is difficult to see in bright sunlight.
A little tip I've done with my phone to have water-resistant charging, was to fit one of those magnetic tip adaptors with just a ring of blue-tac around the collar before inserting to give a good seal.

Thanks for the video. Because I ride an electric bike, I need live maps to navigate to charging stations (only TomTom has them, but not live and I don't know how accurate TT is with adding new stations). So I'm stuck to a mobile phone to navigate as well. To keep it charged, I DO use the usb socket, but I changed it for a watertight (marine) version made by Scanstrut. They make different types (used on boats etc). I have this one: www.svb-marine.it/it/scanstrut-presa-usb-impermeabile-doppia.html Old socket out, new one in, ready to go.
The problem with gloves and the device touch can be solved by keeping one of those touch pens in your jacket front pocket or somehow attached close to your device. It's a lot easier to use the pointy pens than fat-fingers in gloves :)

Hi, very nice review and solution. I am using a wireless charging phone holder. I connected it to a metal bridge (on Africa twin 2020). I installed Car launcher pro (from Google play). I set it up so whoever I start the motorcycle it turns on automatically. It allows me to use apps using big buttons. So I added nabigation: off road (also from Google play), waze and Google maps (mainly for on road riding). Speed dial app. Ytmusic app and that's it. I control the volume, forward, backward, receive or ignore calls and more from the Honda buttons of the bike. Easy and perfect solution. Another very simple and good app is Car Dashdroid, also on Google play. As for the gloves screen issue, there's no escape from using gloves that support touch screen but I also set up the screen (Samsung s10+) a higher sensitivity for touch. That is solving the touch issue complitly. Thanks again.
I put my old IPhone SE in a SW-Motech Navi Case Pro S. And i mainly use Scenic as my navigation partner. The case is fixed on the bike with a RAM-Mount system.
Great video on this undercovered topic. Thanks. I'll probably get a Garmin Zuma XP, but I just installed OSMAND+ on my Samsung phone. It has roads, trails, contour lines, terrain shading and it'll import and export routes. I played with it and like the appearance and user interface. I like that it uses open source maps and doesn't spy on me like Google maps. I might get a dedicated WiFi only Android device for the ADV motorcycle navigator. I'd try to get a waterproof version that can be wirelessly charged.
Really enjoying this app. My current phone which I was looking for a replacement is a Samsung 9+ so it will find a new home on my T7 😎. I ordered a wireless quad lock, great idea. I'm hooking mine to a Amplink power management block. Cheers
I have used Calimoto on my phone in a Ultimateaddons case, but like you, the USB where plugs into the bike is open to the elements. If you find a solution, let us know! Great videos by the way
On the tenere 700 there are two un used cablesthat directly go on the battery. They are under the right fairing near the blinker. One is wired to your contact when you turn the key and the other is continues power. You can connect it there.
Thanks for all of this information I really like the blue tooth devise. My experience with my Samsung Note 8is high marks. I have run in every temperature from 106 f across Texas and New Mexico U.S. to 49 f in Canada. I use a Defender case and it has been dropped many many times only breaking the screen and screen saver once. The phone has spent 14K miles on my 16" Africa Twin on both dirt and asphalt roads.
What a wonderful video on a subject I think about all the time. You did a great job covering NAV's on motorcycles. I have a BMW GSA with the "Wunder Wheel". This is a built-in "Carpe Iter Controller" made to control the MotoRad (Garman) NAV. But like you, I dislike Garman and use a smartphone instead. So I found a company called "BlackBox Embedded" that makes a box that lets me use the BMW WounderWheel to control my android via Bluetooth. The wonderwheel gets all the bikes info from the CANbus and the WunderLinq software displays it on the smartphone. BlackBox did a good job at the hardware and the software is solid but just klunky and doesn't really take advantage of the BMW WunderWheel. The software is open source and I've started to change the code to my liking. Some one should repurpus BMW wonder wheel to fit all bikes like the "Carpe Iter Controller". Yes LOVE the QuadLock, I've even 3d printed extra GL adaptors. blackboxembedded.com/

Garmin with Apple CarPlay would be the solution. A controller for the phone would also be good, perhaps similar to the Carpe Iter Pad could work on an Android phone. I should have watched to the end first before commenting!
That will be my future navigation without maps ( I Think paper maps will help you to use yout mind and don´t forget this!!!). If you ride in a absolute unknown region or city as well it will be helpful and easy to use! Perfect Video thx a lot! Do it again like this an I will be you fan ;-)
Nice vid. I still think a smartphone as a satnav is *a* solution an not *the* solution. I use a regular Garmin as main satnav and an old Samsung as backup, just in case. In combination with Osmand+ (where I can import my own tracks into) I have off-line charts and do not need a mobile connection on the phone. My "every day" smartphone allways stays on my body tucked away to keep it safe. In my opinion, smartphones can do navigation but are not especially designed for that, so I wouldn't trust them completely. BTW you can isolate the usb port from the elements rather cheap and easy: - take a piece of inner bicycle tube (MTB size) - put the usb wire through and connect it to the outlet - put one end of the inner tube around the port and fasten the other end around the wire (ty-rap, electrical tape...) - thus you have two advantages: the connection from the wire to the port is secure and it is protected from water/dust etc.. Stay safe... Ed.
3:50 online maps: google maps allows you to download very large maps to your device. When you fill up your device, you can get around 8 large US states. One map is typically about half of a state in size. I use this method, and I find it very effective. Also, if you leave Google maps open, any satellite imagery that you have downloaded will remain in its cache. This means as long as the app is open all of the satellite images you have viewed will remain visible. Scan over the area you are planning to ride ahead of time and let the maps load onto your device, then they will be there during your ride!
A most interesting and thought provoking video - thanks and subscribed As an Apple user I have been using the excellent Pocket Earth app for several years on the bike for navigation. It loads full continents with it’s unique compression so the Open Street Mapping (OSM) is always available offline except when modifying or creating a route. The app is stuffed full of utilities for both on and off roaders with many more in beta as we speak After suffering camera failure twice due to failure of the auto stabilisation on my iPhone 7 I now use a dedicated iPhone 6S. I’m not concerned about the camera or waterproofing as a new iPhone SE lives in my pocket and acts as a hotspot on the rare occasions it is needed - so no SIM card required At the moment I use a simple stylus on a tether to zoom and scroll etc - works OK but not sure if it is legal and rain drops can affect performance. I’m therefore on the lookout for something along the lines of your remote I have found my Logitech Anywhere 5s BT mouse works just great on the 6S with iOS 14 but obviously not when on a bike! However it seems to me a small BT trackball could do the same job and thereby operate the screen/app via the displayed mouse pointer Now, if said device could be operated by one’s thumb or a finger it could attach to a handlebar, steering wheel, wheelchair armrest, bicycle etc etc etc and could thereby appeal to a much larger audience. I have touted the concept around various organisations such as Logitech, Brydge, Sivercrest and Apple (ha ha) but had no response! Maybe I should approach Carpelter ...

I have exactly the same setup (different phone though.....and different bike ;-) Just a tip from my side; Drive Mode Dashboard has an extra app called Screen Tools....you can block the direction of the screen and lock for touching so that it is not influenced in heavy rain! NB I use the BV6100 phone, rugged android an a large 6,8" screen, to have for around 120 euros.

For the phone choice, I could recommand the new Pocco M3 when there is no or bad charging solution. Cheap (had it for 130€), Android, 6.000mAh battery and Galileo satellite compatible. In "Ultra economy mode", it while shut off all unecessary script and app, keeping just a phone. In this mode you can manually add an any app that will work under this mode, you also can use internet and bluetooth. In casual usage : game, internet, youtube : I can last 3 days before I charge the phone. And I always charge it when there is 25% battery left in it. The downside : there is no wireless charge.

I have tried both iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S7, but both of them is hard to see in sunlight, maybe other phones is better? Had some issues with suddenly rotating screen also. I use a Garmin device now (Zumo XT) with OSM, Topo maps ++, that works great for what is it, but it’s not a multi purpose android device. Thanks for great channel, keep up the good work . Same ... I use locus for topo maps from Australian government but use Osmand for off-line and offroad turn by turn navigation and route planning. I am sure it was my training issue on not understanding how to plan and navigate a route on Locus. Would be very interested in a demo video!

Robert, well explained and a great compilation of hard- and software for Android based navigation 👍🏼 Based on my experience with a Land Rover and Garmin navigation I want to avoid any type of connector on my T7. A wireless charging station with direct battery connection is a MUST for me or something similar like the Garmin zumo XT cradle. There is plenty of time for planning until spring next year but my setup needs to done until SKOG 2021. I have to find the way to the 🌲🌲🌲 in 🇸🇪
Top class Robert, much cheaper than a Garmin set up, Android all the way. View-ranger and OSMand are also good nav tools. But the remote is something else, good find. Cheers and take care with that T7.

Really useful video. I use a cheap android phone with ultimate addons case for navigation and even touch screen friendly gloves are hardly working with this case. So it seems that the Carpe Iter controller is a good solution, plus I really like the drive mode dashboard :-)

@@frankpusch4616 I installed it in december so hard to test overheating yet :) And this is all related to the Samsung S9+ and not the focus of this video. As mentioned I chose a cheap phone but you could get a military graded phone or tablet which will be rugged and deal with both hot and cold. My Samsung S9 will not tolerate the hottest climates for sure.
@@NomadSweden I had an old Sony Z3. With about 35 degrees and normal usage the screen broke 2 times.
I also have the S9+ now. Direct sunlight + charging - especially wireless + brightest display + steady navigation in towns and not on highways + no wind => you might have issues. Best to reduce some of the mentioned points for a certain time. Then for me no problems with hot temp despite it is not an outood smartphone

Great video. Thank you. I have only one comment based on 75000km of phone navigating over a 2 year period in South America and Africa with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. It was FLAWLESS, except for the fact that after having the screen turned ON for so long, every day for 2 years, the AMOLED screen burn has now gotten so bad that it has made my $800 phone unusable. I cannot see anything on it anymore. From what I've read, this happens with ALL AMOLED screens, and the solution is to use a phone that has any other screen than an AMOLED screen. I just bought a cheap 7" phone with an IPS screen and while it's not a Samsung Galaxy, it works for my needs and I won't cry as much if it dies.

Coincidently, I've been reading a lot about the same opinion in various motorcyles forums from other riders about having a 2nd used phone on the bike for multiuses, maps, music, etc, or only 1 dedicated maps device, but always keep your original phone with you for worst case scenarios that you may end up separated from your bike. I've also watched already some videos on youtube about it too, but this one is the best one so far, what a brilliant and very informative video Robert, well done!! For sure it has answered so many questions for a lot of motorcycle riders and future ones too, me included!! Thanks for taking the time to create it and share it!! 👍👍

You can connect the wireless charger onto the contact when you turn the key. There is a cable on the right side of the tenere. Remove the fairing and you’ll see it close to the blinker.

As you said, you cannot cross the desert of Arabia fro’m dubai to Jerusalem with this solution. The gps would remain a better option maybe especially with the weather and the lack of internet connectivity in the middle of the dunes or the canyons. I have almost the same setup but some tips for some of you.
The quad lock stuffed the image stabilisation on the iPhone 11 so I bought an iPhone 6+. The iPhone 11 was only 3 days old. (it was replaced under warranty)
I also added the quad lock vibration dampener. I only use the 6+ for navigation but if I want to mount the 11 for around town then I can.
I use HEMA maps primarily but sometimes need to navigate by road and use google for this. Much of our State does not have good or any mobile service so for this I use google offline maps. It navigates perfectly via the inbuilt GPS in all phones.

There are mobile devices that have a glove function. It works well with 3 seasons gloves, but it gets very difficult with thick winter gloves, but it is cheaper from the bluetooth controller.
I have an old and cheap nowadays, Sony Xperia Z5 waterproof, with this glove function.

I'm glad to see someone advocating for a phone/tablet as GPS. I'm going with the 8" Galaxy Tab Active on the Lynx fairing dash for my KTM 690 Enduro. I don't know if I'll run your dashboard or not. The wireless charger is a brilliant solution! I want the tablet space for my old eyes AND to serve as my drone screen when flying the drone off of the bike (velcro the controller to the top of the tank bag and get an extended cord between the controller and the tablet is my idea). Yes, we work to buy bike parts! Cheers!

Thanks very much. A lot of great tips. Like you I’m a bit of a Nav Nerd. Like you I use old phone on Quadlock, but I also have small Garmin Hiking GPS on handlebars. It’s good having 2 devices at different scales. One has planned route, other is more for exploring off the main route. If one breaks, I have the other one.

As for Locus-pro: I have been using this for 7 years now for hiking, motorcycle rides, landscape photography, ...
Locus-pro in combination with ofline vector maps is great, I never make a mobile connection for navigation.
Those ofline vector maps of Europe (or more), I download them for a cup of coffee from a fantastic German guy.
He renders these vector maps from open street maps with great detail and poi such as huts, barriers, ... too many to mention.
The following outdoor maps are loaded on my Samsung S7: Scotland, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands,
Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. These are the countries where I come at least twice a year if there is no corona.
If this interests you, I will send you some screenshots of places or coordinates that you give me.
The only downside to navigating with a mobile phone is that it is difficult to see in bright sunlight.

A little tip I've done with my phone to have water-resistant charging, was to fit one of those magnetic tip adaptors with just a ring of blue-tac around the collar before inserting to give a good seal.

Because I ride an electric bike, I need live maps to navigate to charging stations (only TomTom has them, but not live and I don't know how accurate TT is with adding new stations). So I'm stuck to a mobile phone to navigate as well. To keep it charged, I DO use the usb socket, but I changed it for a watertight (marine) version made by Scanstrut. The problem with gloves and the device touch can be solved by keeping one of those touch pens in your jacket front pocket or somehow attached close to your device. It's a lot easier to use the pointy pens than fat-fingers in gloves :)

Hi, very nice review and solution. I am using a wireless charging phone holder. I connected it to a metal bridge (on Africa twin 2020). I installed Car launcher pro (from Google play). I set it up so whoever I start the motorcycle it turns on automatically. It allows me to use apps using big buttons. So I added nabigation: off road (also from Google play), waze and Google maps (mainly for on road riding). Speed dial app. Ytmusic app and that's it. I control the volume, forward, backward, receive or ignore calls and more from the Honda buttons of the bike. Easy and perfect solution. Another very simple and good app is Car Dashdroid, also on Google play. As for the gloves screen issue, there's no escape from using gloves that support touch screen but I also set up the screen (Samsung s10+) a higher sensitivity for touch. That is solving the touch issue complitly.

I put my old IPhone SE in a SW-Motech Navi Case Pro S. And i mainly use Scenic as my navigation partner.
The case is fixed on the bike with a RAM-Mount system.

I'll probably get a Garmin Zuma XP, but I just installed OSMAND+ on my Samsung phone. It has roads, trails, contour lines, terrain shading and it'll import and export routes. I played with it and like the appearance and user interface. I like that it uses open source maps and doesn't spy on me like Google maps. I might get a dedicated WiFi only Android device for the ADV motorcycle navigator. I'd try to get a waterproof version that can be wirelessly charged.

I have used Calimoto on my phone in a Ultimateaddons case, but like you, the USB where plugs into the bike is open to the elements. If you find a solution, let us know! Great videos by the way
On the tenere 700 there are two un used cablesthat directly go on the battery. They are under the right fairing near the blinker. One is wired to your contact when you turn the key and the other is continues power. You can connect it there.
Thanks for all of this information I really like the blue tooth devise. My experience with my Samsung Note 8is high marks. I have run in every temperature from 106 f across Texas and New Mexico U.S. to 49 f in Canada. I use a Defender case and it has been dropped many many times only breaking the screen and screen saver once. The phone has spent 14K miles on my 16" Africa Twin on both dirt and asphalt roads.
What a wonderful video on a subject I think about all the time. You did a great job covering NAV's on motorcycles. I have a BMW GSA with the "Wunder Wheel". This is a built-in "Carpe Iter Controller" made to control the MotoRad (Garman) NAV. But like you, I dislike Garman and use a smartphone instead. So I found a company called "BlackBox Embedded" that makes a box that lets me use the BMW WounderWheel to control my android via Bluetooth. The wonderwheel gets all the bikes info from the CANbus and the WunderLinq software displays it on the smartphone. BlackBox did a good job at the hardware and the software is solid but just klunky and doesn't really take advantage of the BMW WunderWheel. The software is open source and I've started to change the code to my liking. Some one should repurpus BMW wonder wheel to fit all bikes like the "Carpe Iter Controller". Yes LOVE the QuadLock, I've even 3d printed extra GL adaptors.

Garmin with Apple CarPlay would be the solution. A controller for the phone would also be good, perhaps similar to the Carpe Iter Pad could work on an Android phone. I should have watched to the end first before commenting!
That will be my future navigation without maps ( I Think paper maps will help you to use yout mind and don´t forget this!!!). If you ride in a absolute unknown region or city as well it will be helpful and easy to use! Perfect Video thx a lot! Do it again like this an I will be you fan ;-)

I still think a smartphone as a satnav is *a* solution an not *the* solution.
I use a regular Garmin as main satnav and an old Samsung as backup, just in case.
In combination with Osmand+ (where I can import my own tracks into) I have off-line charts and do not need a mobile connection on the phone.
My "every day" smartphone allways stays on my body tucked away to keep it safe.
In my opinion, smartphones can do navigation but are not especially designed for that, so I wouldn't trust them completely.
BTW you can isolate the usb port from the elements rather cheap and easy:
- take a piece of inner bicycle tube (MTB size)
- put the usb wire through and connect it to the outlet
- put one end of the inner tube around the port and fasten the other end around the wire (ty-rap, electrical tape...)
- thus you have two advantages: the connection from the wire to the port is secure and it is protected from water/dust etc..

3:50 online maps: google maps allows you to download very large maps to your device. When you fill up your device, you can get around 8 large US states. One map is typically about half of a state in size. I use this method, and I find it very effective. Also, if you leave Google maps open, any satellite imagery that you have downloaded will remain in its cache. This means as long as the app is open all of the satellite images you have viewed will remain visible. Scan over the area you are planning to ride ahead of time and let the maps load onto your device, then they will be there during your ride!

Also a good contender is a BV6100 smart phone. It is IP65 and IP69K certified and not that expensive. Also, the screen is big enough imo.

As an Apple user I have been using the excellent Pocket Earth app for several years on the bike for navigation. It loads full continents with it’s unique compression so the Open Street Mapping (OSM) is always available offline except when modifying or creating a route. The app is stuffed full of utilities for both on and off roaders with many more in beta as we speak
After suffering camera failure twice due to failure of the auto stabilisation on my iPhone 7 I now use a dedicated iPhone 6S. I’m not concerned about the camera or waterproofing as a new iPhone SE lives in my pocket and acts as a hotspot on the rare occasions it is needed - so no SIM card required
At the moment I use a simple stylus on a tether to zoom and scroll etc - works OK but not sure if it is legal and rain drops can affect performance. I’m therefore on the lookout for something along the lines of your remote
I have found my Logitech Anywhere 5s BT mouse works just great on the 6S with iOS 14 but obviously not when on a bike! However it seems to me a small BT trackball could do the same job and thereby operate the screen/app via the displayed mouse pointer
Now, if said device could be operated by one’s thumb or a finger it could attach to a handlebar, steering wheel, wheelchair armrest, bicycle etc etc etc and could thereby appeal to a much larger audience. I have touted the concept around various organisations such as Logitech, Brydge, Sivercrest and Apple (ha ha) but had no response! Maybe I should approach Carpelter ...

I have exactly the same setup (different phone though.....and different bike ;-) Just a tip from my side; Drive Mode Dashboard has an extra app called Screen Tools....you can block the direction of the screen and lock for touching so that it is not influenced in heavy rain! NB I use the BV6100 phone, rugged android an a large 6,8" screen, to have for around 120 euros.

For the phone choice, I could recommand the new Pocco M3 when there is no or bad charging solution.
Cheap (had it for 130€), Android, 6.000mAh battery and Galileo satellite compatible.
In "Ultra economy mode", it while shut off all unecessary script and app, keeping just a phone.
In this mode you can manually add an any app that will work under this mode, you also can use internet and bluetooth.
In casual usage : game, internet, youtube : I can last 3 days before I charge the phone. And I always charge it when there is 25% battery left in it.
The downside : there is no wireless charge.

I have tried both iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S7, but both of them is hard to see in sunlight, maybe other phones is better? Had some issues with suddenly rotating screen also.
I use a Garmin device now (Zumo XT) with OSM, Topo maps ++, that works great for what is it, but it’s not a multi purpose android device.

Same ... I use locus for topo maps from Australian government but use Osmand for off-line and offroad turn by turn navigation and route planning. I am sure it was my training issue on not understanding how to plan and navigate a route on Locus. Would be very interested in a demo video!

Robert, well explained and a great compilation of hard- and software for Android based navigation 👍🏼 Based on my experience with a Land Rover and Garmin navigation I want to avoid any type of connector on my T7. A wireless charging station with direct battery connection is a MUST for me or something similar like the Garmin zumo XT cradle. There is plenty of time for planning until spring next year but my setup needs to done until SKOG 2021. I have to find the way to the 🌲🌲🌲 in 🇸🇪

Top class Robert, much cheaper than a Garmin set up, Android all the way. View-ranger and OSMand are also good nav tools. But the remote is something else, good find. Cheers and take care with that T7.

@@NomadSweden tack vare dig (I don't speak swedish, but google translator helps a lot ;) ) BTW I've been to Sweden, precisely I was in Backe , many years ago, when I was importing timber from Sweden to Italy. I have great memories of your country. I still do some import from Sweden but very little compared to the nineties.
All you need to import now are 4 swedes and fill them with great italian wine.
Carry a map a compass and keep in touch with your natural senses. Always take note of landmarks for navigating . Enjoy your ride
Yes, I try to use the digital tools the same way. Not to let automatic navigation take the fun out of things.

Fantastic information, thanks a bunch for the video, can't wait for the rest! One suggestion, if you want to get to the next level, start scripting your videos instead of "winging" them, for example no need to say that "a button can be pressed, and a stick can move in 4 directions", can become a bit tiring to watch.

Really useful video. I use a cheap android phone with ultimate addons case for navigation and even touch screen friendly gloves are hardly working with this case. So it seems that the Carpe Iter controller is a good solution, plus I really like the drive mode dashboard :-)
Even if I managed before, this is so convenient it's worth the quite steep controller.

Do it. It has a steeper learning curve but it's so very customizable which makes it great. Take your time and check tutorials on youtube
Someone in another video used a running arm phone holder which gives you waterproof and a great holder for less than £10
