  • @lauraiss1027

    Why start riding after 40:
    1. If you crash and die, you've seen enough and nobody is that level dependent financially on you. Mortgages are almost paid and kids are grownups and wife gets the house.
    2. Your need to socialize has dropped all times low. It's not motorcycle riding that improves mental health, it's being alone, away from all the bs. For better results, "forget" phone.
    3. You can ride as far and fast as you want, since you are starting to loose sight, reaction and acknowledging that, you won't go too fast anyways. So less stupidity because of medical reasons.
    4. Since hormonal storms and the libido eagle has calmed down, you can finally explore mountain passes and forests not worrying whether there will be any chicks to meet.
    5. Less risk of DUI next morning, since you can hold no more than 5 beers anyway before passing out due tiredness.
    6. If desperate, you can deliberately destroy whole EFI system keeping yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere, missing that father's in law organized family reunion event.

I actually learned how to ride a motorcycle at 80. I bought a Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and have had lots of fun. I do not use a gym. The workout of carrying the motorcycling protective gear, helmet, jacket, pants, and boots is more than enough weight lifting.

I agree on the health benefits. In March 2023 I finished seven weeks of daily radiology on my tongue, and weekly chemo and four months later, still having not put on the 18 kg I lost, I took myself on a five week motorbike tour around Europ. I was weaker and mildly intimidated by this but it was the best thing I could’ve done for my recovery.

Hello Robert, very fine life video today. Enjoyed it very much. I will tell you some of my experience. I am 73 years old. Have been riding over 50 years. Work for Harley-Davidson in the early '70s. Rode mostly road bikes until the last 2 years I got into adventure riding. It really opened my eyes up to a different world. I had cataract surgery done on both eyes last year. Had new lenses put in my eyes. I see like I did when I was 20 years old now so the world has changed a lot for me and also writing adventure bikes especially off road. I'm in Colorado and there's no limit the amount of places you can travel to, so I'm very lucky there. Thanks for your videos. Truly enjoy them. Touches my heart. Oh by the way, I got my t-shirt yesterday. I'll be wearing it in motor camp this summer. Thank you so much! Have a great day. Be safe out there. Your US swedish brother. Peace out

Great video, soothed my worries about entering 40s greatly! Am currently 37 and been riding gravity bicycle disciplines since 15. The first 10 or so years biketrials was it, but now am destroying local dirts during summer and indoor skateparks during winter, teaching my son how to nail airs and streets along the way. Managed to avoid motorcycles until 33yo, then got the license and started with a tiny Kawasaki KLX250, never regretted it as my first, few years after suddenly got Honda CBR600RR from a friend and things got serious! Still alive and in one piece though, looking forward to enjoy 40s on all kinds of two-wheeled devices, with the only exception being the wheelchair. Sub and love from snowy Moscow!

In March I will ride from West Vancouver Canada to Palm Springs.down the coast, and home through Utah, the long way. I took a 20 year break to raise 4 children and started again at the age of 60 . How I got into this? Had two other job colleagues that were already riding and another one wanting to get into it, so thought this is a good moment to start in the same time, different cities, but ever since we got the licenses got some beautiful moments together and was the best decision to get into this. I've ridden since I was 18. Got in to ADV bikes five years ago and it changed everything. Adventure riding reinvigorated my love for motorcycling and took it to a completely new level.
A reason I would like to add: With a helmet on you can be truly alone, which is rare in everyday life. Going camping in the middle of nowhere by yourself is great and when you have your motorcycle with you, you still feel like you have a buddy with you.
Now I'm 36 awaiting my third child, so probably this season won't be too crazy - but hey, only four years 'till forty!

Hello Robert, I enjoyed your video. Your synopsis is spot on. I am 68 years old and have owned 13 motorcycles, including a Ural sidecar rig. 50 years on the saddle and no plan to stop any time soon. Attempting to explain to a non rider what the thrill is all about is futile. Only a fellow rider can understand the sensation of “flying” on the ground. It is truly an empirical experience. Cheers 👍🏻

We have a weekly bike night here over the spring and summer with 400+ bikes. It’s really good to meet up and just chat bikes and find about people and their lives. I'm 41 this year, and I ride Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. I've done so much to upgrade the bike accessories, the upgrading/ modification was therapeutic to me, and the riding was another therapy. The pipe sound while I rode the bike within the B grade / interior part of the tropical setting was calming, and seeing the bike itself at parks was a happy experience. I like riding, the bike doesn't have to be expensive for you to ride, it can be just a simple moped, ride is a ride. Plus if you have a good conversation with peoples you met along the way, that would add values to your riding experience. In my case, many Indians came to me to have a conversation about the bike.

I totally understand. I'm 46 now and hope to start taking lessons and get my motorcycle license hopefully just before summer. It indeed has nothing to do with a midlife crisis but rather simply finally having the time and the peace to get around to it. I really look forward to just taking myself out into the world and just enjoy the alone-time, the peace, the nature - it's all just easier and more fun on a motorcycle than in a car :)

A lot of good points here Robert. I started riding in my late twenties but that came to a halt when one of my childhood friends had a fatal crash. We were in a group where half of us were “övningskörde” and the other half were mentoring and the whole group sold their bikes and stopped riding after the accident. 10-12 years later I got my license and got me a dual sport and a naked bike. I know myself and my weaknesses, I know it could just as well been me that day. Now in my forties I can control my adrenaline and evaluate risks somewhat better. I subscribe to your other point as well. Wish we could ride all year around here in 🇸🇪

A brilliant video Robert! I think happiness (or rather how one defines it) on a bike changes with age. Back when I started riding MX (12 years old), happiness was mostly seeing how fast one could go (at that age one believes one is immortal 😄 ) or how long one could show off doing wheelies! Today at the age of 54, happiness or as many call it..."throttle therapy" is riding for and living in that moment, whether it's going on your adv bike for a short trip in the woods or riding your street bike to your favorite coffee house. Keep up the great job Robert and hopefully catch you at the Adventure Motorcycle Expo 2025!
