Gday Robert, Steve here from Australia. I have a YT motorcycle review channel here in Aus, what you covered here is very good advice for over 40’s. I’m in my mid 60’s now and have been riding for over 50 years , I love my big heavy adventure bikes BUT am well aware of the fact that they are becoming harder both physically and mentally to operate. I have seen many friends that have suffered knee & shoulder injuries that probably would not have happened if they were riding lighter machines as you advise in your comments, in some cases they have had to give up riding. In many ways (excluding the lower power factor) lighter bikes are actually more fun ! They allow you to explore far more territory & will probably extend your riding years. First time looking at your channel, you do a great job. 👍

Hi Robert nice video. I've been riding bikes (motorcycle and cycle) since I was 20 (and less with cycles) , but all my motorbikes were road bikes. I did have a GS1200 at one point and did some long trips on it, but in my eyes it was strictly for the tarmac roads. Off-road was really scary (no lower seat available when the 2008 Adventure came out). I always fancied going off-road and when I got a Ducati Scrambler back in 2018 (what a great bike for eating up the road miles!) I thought: "Lets have a go on some of my local trails". Well, it was like trying to lug a few 25kg bags of cement around and definitely not to be recommended. So I went to the other extreme - my heart said: "KTM 300 two-stroke - what an awesome looking bike!". And it was awesome. Awesome on the road (even with knobbly tyres) and awesome off-road - like you said in the video it made what had previously seemed impossible to be downright easy. BUT - one caveat: the EXC300 is awesome off-road, but I definitely am not and I did have a few scrapes with it. I started doing roadbook rallies in the UK - lots of gravel roads with tarmac in between and I went for a second bike. Heavier and more road biased, a GasGas ES700. Very capable on road, but not so good off-road, especially in the tricky stuff. Then I had my two lovely bikes stolen in 2022 out of my garage. What did I replace them with? well, one bike for now and it's one of the lightest on the market here in the UK - a Montesa 4Ride. The off-road became even easier than with the KTM and I quickly wished I had started my off-road journey with this bike and worked up. The Montesa is easily capable of competing in a 500km 2-day roadbook rally, although it requires more fuel stops, and I swear I'm way faster in the tricky stuff because it's all so easy. Tarmac roads need a change of attitude though. Now I'm thinking of perhaps doing some longer trips as well as the rallies and have started to look at something a bit more capable on the tarmac. Perhaps a manufacturer will come up with something really simple in the 100-110kg range with a chassis like the KTM enduros, an engine as tractable as the Montesa (with a steering geometry to match) and the service intervals and reliability of a Suzuki DR-Z400. I'll keep dreaming!

I love motorcycling and I started doing it quite seriously from the age of 40. Now I am 46 and getting more experienced. The only so-called "challenge" doing this sport is, it can a little bit lonely. My friends or close relatives are either too busy with family and kids (I dont have kids which makes it easier to take time off for it..) or they are not into it. So cruising around on my own for a couple of days is fun. But I have been on trips for about 2-3 weeks on my own, and those trips would have been more fun doing them with like-minded people. I have been wondering how many people here are riding on their own vs. with other folks?

At least I will end with a range of 350 -400 km. Hm, schould I have a look on the AJP ???? I am sure, we will see soon much more ADV-bikes around 50-60 HP, 450 - 700 ccm.
