The population is growing, says Bill Nye, but it’s important to note that the rate of growth is slowing down. Why? Because the more our societies educate girls, the fewer children they have once they’re women. The population will very likely rise to 9 or 10 billion people and the world does have enough resources to look after us all, provided we do three things to redistribute resources globally, not just in developed nations. We need to produce reliable renewable energy to get electricity to every individual on the planet. We need to use that clean energy to increase the quality of water sanitation systems in developing nations so we lose less time and lives combating diseases, time which children could better spend in school. We must continue to educate girls and women, as quickly as we can, which means providing access to the internet and other information resources, globally. It’s in our best interest; if women have more control over their lives and reproductive choices, the world’s resources become more ample for each individual. Bill Nye's most recent book is Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World.

    BILL NYE:
Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining and accessible is something Bill has been doing most of his life.
In Seattle Nye began to combine his love of science with his flair for comedy, when he won the Steve Martin look-alike contest and developed dual careers as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. Nye then quit his day engineering day job and made the transition to a night job as a comedy writer and performer on Seattle’s home-grown ensemble comedy show “Almost Live.” This is where “Bill Nye the Science Guy®” was born. The show appeared before Saturday Night Live and later on Comedy Central, originating at KING-TV, Seattle’s NBC affiliate.
While working on the Science Guy show, Nye won seven national Emmy Awards for writing, performing, and producing. The show won 18 Emmys in five years. In between creating the shows, he wrote five children’s books about science, including his latest title, “Bill Nye’s Great Big Book of Tiny Germs.”
Nye is the host of three currently-running television series. “The 100 Greatest Discoveries” airs on the Science Channel. “The Eyes of Nye” airs on PBS stations across the country.
Bill’s latest project is hosting a show on Planet Green called “Stuff Happens.” It’s about environmentally responsible choices that consumers can make as they go about their day and their shopping. Also, you’ll see Nye in his good-natured rivalry with his neighbor Ed Begley. They compete to see who can save the most energy and produce the smallest carbon footprint. Nye has 4,000 watts of solar power and a solar-boosted hot water system. There’s also the low water use garden and underground watering system. It’s fun for him; he’s an engineer with an energy conservation hobby.
Nye is currently the Executive Director of The Planetary Society, the world’s largest space interest organization.

    TRANSCRIPT:
Martina: Hey Bill it's Martina from Slovakia. I'm studying medical chemistry and I have two questions to be answered. The first one is the question how would you probably solve the problem of still growing population? And the second question is very important is…
Bill Nye: Will I marry you? So Martina, I'll get to your second question at the end. A growing population is a problem, but notice that the rate that the human population is growing is slowing down and this is almost certainly not so much a consequence of finite resources, which is what people like Malfis speculated late in the 18th century, it's not a question of finite resources it's apparently raising the standard of living of women and girls, people like you. As women and girls get better educated they have fewer kids and the kids they do have have more resources so they're better taken care of and they are more successful...

And despite what we would actually manage to accomplish, climate change isn't going away before we cross that 9 billion mark.

How the fuck can anyone forget that, it's the most important part, and the basis of why everything else goes wrong. Stop treating nature right and the world goes to shit.
Most scum humans that have a house and garden - they use it to make the world a worse place, as they use it to harm nature and usually waste fuel, and rape the aethers also, in so doing, and make harmful noise a lot of the time too. They all know they need to be planting more plants, and not interfering with wildlife, in order to even begin to address the problems caused - yet most of them instead waste fuel to cut back plants that don't need cut, and they even use poisons, have fake porn-gardens with bare soil, believe lies that weeds exist = controlled by adverts and false mechanised types of farming. Ritualistic abuse of nature by a scumbag species that should never have gotten so far into its generations as it has. They're all destructive scumbags that need wiped out, and if you're responsible you'd agree. They should never have been given any tools. Full proper disclosure would reveal the truth about how wilfully evil and wilfully ignorant they are, so then easy to get rid of them.

"The U.S. has only 4.5% of the world population but uses 25% of the world's resources." That stat has been horribly abused and it is hardly clear what it is even saying. There is a big huge difference between using 25% of what is being used, or 25% of what is ultimately available. Enviro-wackos seem to prefer the latter interpretation. And where does that stat even come from? Is it based upon anything real? I suspect that somebody just made it up, because "it sounds about right". Well maybe not, actually. The presumption that the rest of the world is some third world wasteland or a century behind us in being developed, seems well pretty much wrong.
The solution is not to use less so that the rest of the world can have more, but rather than the world should produce more so that everybody can have enough. Most all shortages are phony, the fairly predictable results of rampant government corruption and bad ideology. It is not a zero-sum argument, and they should stop lying to us with their bogus scarcity-based assumptions.
Wastefulness is not so much because "we have more than our fair share", as it is a spiritual problem, or a problem of a wicked spirit of entitlement or indulgence. Why do people always have to be consuming something anyway? I saw some guy get out of some ugly over-expensive sports-car, and he is smoking a cigarette and has some drink in his hand. Indulgent much? I don't waste money on ugly impractical cars, I mostly drink water, and I don't smoke. It is not so much about what is being consumed, as those things are not scarce anyway, but about attitude and lack of concern about injustice and for the poor.
I believe that the world should be more inclusive, which relates to why I believe that humans were not meant to use birth control and should multiply naturally. Because surely we can and should welcome more humans to life, if or as they come to life and the huge human population naturally grows.

The way you solve overpopulation across the world ethically without immoral acts is simple.
You make it a international Agreement that all women in every nation have access to copper Intrauterine devices aka the Copper IUD free non-surgical safe installation by qualified international doctors across the world.
The copper IUD is non hormonal T shaped tiny device that is put inside a women’s uterus without any kind of surgery at all. Non hormonal means little to no side effects compared to common conventional hormonal methods.
Purpose: So women can stay in school and work and pursue their personal education goals without the fear of getting pregnant.
Women can get pregnant from one night stands.
      Or rape.
Or not wanting to use protection
      Or other ways.
But copper IUD is effective as soon as put in and lasts for over 10 years.
Conclusion: Women can achieve their life goals without fear of getting pregnant before they want to get pregnant BECAUSE when they WANT to get pregnant, all they gotta do is remove the Copper IUD and their all set to attempt to have a baby like normal again.
      Ethical.
      Moral.
Gives women control over when they want to get pregnant.
Doesn’t resort to killing babies like previous methods of birth control.
      Win. Win. Win. 😁
How to pay?: in 1st world countries, it is free because it is payed for in different ways idk maybe government reallocates some of its annual spending to create supply of copper IUD for women? In second and third world countries, idk maybe it can be offered and paid for by the UN when they visit an area like they always do. Idk. They offer it for free and qualified and regulated doctors working internationally on humanitarian missions can perform the simple installations. The point is it must be accessible and free for women to acquire. That is paramount.
In the US for example, one way I thought would be quick to get the word out, is to have question added to questionnaire when young women first attempt to get their drivers license. 18 year old women comes in wanting to get drivers license and on the questionnaire it asks “if you’d like to receive your free copper IUD installation? If Yes, check box here and choose appointment date
And appointment location at your nearest hospital of your choosing.” Something like that. I’m just thinking off the top of my head here.
But yea. Cause I know over population is a unspoken epidemic but I wanted a moral and ethical way of solving it without killing babies.
      Any thoughts?
      ☺️
Also, it’s good for men too because it creates safety for men. Like if a young couple made Love but didn’t use protection. Not only would the girl be able to stay in school but the dude can too meaning both can continue to study and pursue their life goals without having to put their lives on hold you know?
So it’s a win win for both men and women ☺️

I don't need to convince anybody about anything, people like you prefer to live in childish ignorance and won't change their minds no matter how much proof one throws at them. Knowing that in a century or so Christianity will have disappeared is good enough for me. "It says Lincoln was vaguely familiar with Darwin's previous book that didn't involve natural selection, thus making the ideas described compatible with Christianity." I know, which is why I said "you should be aware that the less scientific knowledge there is in any particular time period, the more devoted Christians there are" no matter their level of education, which is why you'll find almost no relevant scientists today who believe in god. Believe what you want! But if you open your eyes to reality, you'll see how beautiful the universe is without making it all about yourself as Christians do.

There are all kinds of people...and you are speaking for her, why? who are you to her to answer for her whether she was joking or not? If you think she was joking, why you didn't thought about him joking about her? Might as well be sarcasm, which in this case I feel it was.

I think we should really include cultural/social paradigms when we discuss population.
And start by the simple fact that the existence of a global common interest is not shared by the vast majority of people. Individual, familial, tribal, national, racial or religious interests shape the world way more than the knowledge of being part of one unique species. And these interests are sometimes contradictory and lead to conflicts.

Here's a good analogy for overpopulation: Sure my house has enough room for 30 people to *fit inside*, but that doesn't mean my house has the means to actually support 30 people living there.. We might have room for more people technically speaking but considering how bad pollution already is I think it's best if we try not to breed like rabbits..!

It would be cool if we also educated men on how to keep from getting a girl pregnant, and normalize vasectomies. My husband is a well educated man, went to college and got a masters degree. He had no idea what a vasectomy procedure entails. As a woman, somehow I was educated on this procedure, but not him.
That’s a big problem, if you ask me.

Bill Nye is a smart, kind and thoughtful man. Building on what he said...
    1:44 No redistribution!!!!!
3:03 The free market regulates and allocates resources pretty darn well: abundance is cheap, scarcity is expensive. Give it a chance and DEREGULATE!
3:08 If you are willing to pay for it and use it, then it is being utilized efficiently.
3:40 We want a lot of things for other people. The answer to unlocking these things is to ask what is preventing a market from developing in order to provide education, housing, food, water, internet, etc.

Part of the population problem is food, from the type of foods we eat, how they are produced and where they are available. A vegetarian diet is easier and more economical (geologically and ecologically) on the planet. Better use of the resources means better food production and better fed populations of greater numbers.

Anyone interested in what they can do to help with overpopulation, there's an organisation called popoffsets (www.popoffsets.org/) who are working on this problem.
They let you offset carbon by helping people who don't want children not to have children. It's not just saving carbon, it's saving water, resources, rainforest etc etc.
The most Maverick and satisfying thing you can do to counter people drawling out 'overpopulation isn't a problem' is to support a charity like popoffsets. Debates in comment sections probably don't do much to change the world, but cold, hard cash does.

For me, depopulation has always been the obvious solution to all of our environmental and resource problems...and many social problems as well. Why must we endlessly be living on the edge and doing damage the whole time? "One World, One Billion" should be the global motto and a reasonable goal to move toward. If we could ever get close to that with sound, reasonable policies, we could, with the benefit of modern technology, turn this world into a near-utopia.

Theoretically we could be way more efficient with our resources than we are today.
Today's capitalistic environment does not really allow for management of the level we need to cut down on waste.
    -We could recycle way more.
-Repair/update things instead of replacing products.
-We could grow locally and stick more to seasonal availability of groceries.
-We could redevelop out power grids to be smarter about where the energy goes.
-Communal travel can be made available everywhere for free/low cost.
-More people could live in city landscapes and cut down on waste due to distances.
The list goes on and on.
There is enough for 10 billion if we are smart about it.
And I am sure we can push that boundary with some ingenuity.

I agree with his assessment that improving women's lives is a requirement to get to zero population growth and then negative population growth, which blows the minds of people who can't understand it, and think falling population is horrible. I was thinking more in terms of equality between men and women than improving women's education, but perhaps the two go together. The next things would be improving medical care for children so they're more likely to survive until adulthood (so there'd be less need for 4-6 children), and Social Security to see that people surviving into old age are taken care of.
We need to transition to a sustainable world. I can't see 8 billion people having a Western European lifestyle sustainably, let alone an American gas-guzzling lifestyle. Someone said 1 billion, another said 2, while I've said 3 billion, which was the population around 1950.

Take the population of the earth and give each person 1 square yard to stand in,,, how much space would they take up.? you could fit them all into Los Angeles. There's lots of land out there we'll be able to use it much more efficiently in near the future. There's plenty of room for more people.

Rubytuby how long do you think everyone would be able to live standing together in Los Angeles? Not very long I imagine. People need land for more than just to stand in - food, water, clothing, products homes - food in particular takes up a lot of space. What efficiencies do you propose? More GMOs, more pesticides, more fertiliser? We are burning through the world's reserves of phosphorus (a major component of fertilisers) and flushing it away. The only true efficiency is circular economy, if we nail that, maybe you're onto something, but in the current linear model, I'm afraid we're going to start running out of some important stuff. Fresh water as well. Please read 'when the rivers run dry' - it's good, I promise!

Did you people watch the video? The point of contention is the amount of resources used per person, not the amount of physical space available.

Guy dude I don't think resources are going to be a problem in the near future. Vertical farming, automation, it's going to change everything, and it's going to happen quickly. Abundant clean energy, and water ,,,,,accelerated growth Will be the norm for the next 50 years.

Cutting down on anything, even pop, onto it self doesn't mean anything in a complex system. Most people or even organisations don't have the wisdom to select when to tread on glass shards or when to push some boulders around.

Solution: do all of the above and do so in this order...
Less than or equal to 1 child per parent.
(Step away from social norms and religion)
Reduce consumption of ALL resources considerably. (Step away from cultural norms and do some introspection)
Make our current use of resources more efficient. (Education in science)
Then continue to educate others with these extra freed resources and supply the tools to others so that they too can follow the steps above and spread this around.
Unfortunately I think we are heading for cataclysmic event and we still must march on to these steps to reduce the diminishing quality of life for all life.
We are a part of nature...not apart from it.

I think overpopulation is the most worrying factor in today's world, even above climate change. I know we can all live with less luxury (energy, fuel, space) but we wouldn't have to if we simply had less people.
