Hi James... a couple of observations from a retired Captain to help you understand a couple of things. First, you comment the fire department had been on scene 5 minutes with no water. Actually when you said that they had been there 2 minutes and 57 seconds per your video time line. Secondly, you will notice on review of your film that 3 firefighters entered the building to do a primary search of the first floor. You have to be extremely cautious spraying water with people inside... you can steam them and burn or kill them. Also you mentioned they are moving slowly. Rule #3, never ever run on the fire ground. Remain calm and do your assigned task. Running leads to injuries and mistakes, from which nothing good can result. Not complaining about your video, it is a good one. Just providing some information to help you understand that it wasn't as if they didn't care. They were all doing their jobs.

I think MFD did an excellent job of scene control. Excellent communication between command and firefighters. Good attack with quick and safe search. Overall, excellent job.
To those making off camera comments, crews were inside searching for victims. If you openup with a 2.5 in line from the outside ,the flames/heat and smoke are pushed back into the bldg. right at the crews doing the search. Please go to the Red Door clinic down by the Metro Dome/have the good Dr. check your meds.
To the person who said that the FD has been on scene for 5minutes and no water, more likely that is because it goes in stages, the first engine lays a tank line while the 2nd lays a backup to a hydrant and supply's the first engine, ladder company that arrives first will do a search, but it all takes time to get things going for a plan of attack to be developed
Most importantly no one got hurt. Look on Google Maps - in May 2019 the house has been completely repaired and/or rebuilt. It looks like nothing ever happened there. All's well that ends well.
The only thing i have to say so far about this video is that it sounds like minneapolis needs to work on their water supply. You should be able to run 3 or 4 lines if not more with out complaints of no pressure or simply no water in the line. I can say this with honesty because i used to be a firefighter and have been both on a attack line and back up line and a pump operator.
This was one NASTY looking fire. I certainly wouldn't have wanted a company I was commanding to just charge into that inferno. That they ordered an interior attack at all was an incredibly ballsy move considering how heavily involved the upper floors were. What I saw was crisp professionalism - the engines were staged smartly and the chiefs had command from the moment they were on scene. These guys did a fantastic job with a really ugly fire.
the person says the FD has been there 5 mins and no water yet. watch around 2 mins youll see 2 FF going in to do the primary search. You don't put water on a fire until you know the search is clear, this is because the water will make steam and steam isn't good for anyone inside.
yeah there's different ways of doing it the dept im in right now does rescue in places where the fire isnt dangerous while the crews knock down the fire externally then when the primary search is done hose crews go in for an internal knockdown and a secondary search is performed. I mean each dept has different ways of doing it not all the same
one thing i must say about house fires is when i buy a home i tend to buy one thats not close to others, I would hate to lose my house because me neighbors house being on fire the heat transfers to mine and lights it up while its taking however long fort he fire department to take out the burning house
If it gets that far they should change to damage control they'll soak the neighboring buildings to keep flash over from happening. We had a pretty crazy brush fire here last year (nothing like out west but pretty intense for a local midwest department) me and my captain saved a barn just by getting it soaking wet while the fire passed
They were busy searching the house for people. What’s the problem? What are they supposed to do, not search the house, and just leave people burning inside, while the firefighters use water? Would you want them to do that to you?
Unless your a firefighter don't complain about shit, there are steps us firefighter's need to take to ensure that everyone is safe. You don't just go and do your own thing without assessing the situation
I thought this was a great illustration of basic firefighter doctrine. First priority: Protect your own men. Firefighters are expensive to train and you never, ever want to lose one needlessly, so make sure you have a perimeter and a plan of attack. Once the chiefs are on scene, they will issue attack orders and figure out where everyone needs to go save for immediate rescue needs, which begin the moment boots hit the ground. Second priority: Search and rescue of civilians. They were not at all slow in going right into the fire building to begin their search, and with potential victims, as you said, you CANNOT just spray water randomly around. Notice that the primary S&R of the first floor is already complete at 3:30, just after the chiefs and heavy trucks begin to arrive. Third priority: Protection of property. The house is already fully involved and probably unsalvageable. Prevent the fire from spreading, then attack the main fire from the outside inward after S&R gives the all clear. You can hear the chiefs electing for an interior attack immediately after S&R clears. Around 4:35 a hook team goes in, and ventilation begins (to release heat and hot gasses from the upper floors and try to prevent flashover). S&R is complete at 5:10 of floor one and then moves to floor 2. What looks slow from outside is actually very swift and professional. They're following their priority tree to perfection. Letting the house burn while they execute 1 and 2 is an unfortunate but VERY necessary part of firefighter doctrine. They're there to protect people first and property a distant second. Nobody is being lazy, incompetent or callous. They're doing their job EXACTLY as they have been trained and are professional through and through.
Oh yeah? With guys in the building? You're gonna attack from the outside with guys searching inside? It's way more effective to get a line in the building and fight it at the base.
To be more specific, they get foam on the fire. Every firetruck in Holland is equiped with foam ready to go. That way there's less danger of 'steaming' would there still be people inside.
@@StevenvanHonschooten Foam is a mess you guys probably don't have to mop it up. Water is fast, just as effective and cheap. That's honestly just a waist of foam, on top of the fact that foam still streams not as much but it still does. The actual danger in attacking from the outside with guys inside is you could dramatically change the draft or course of the fire trapping them, you'll create black smoke either way blinding them more then they already are. It's just pain dumb, the neighboring structures were fine at the moment let the guys complete there search then attack.
Not entirely accurate. The foam they use is degradable and disappears over time without affecting nature (also used in bushfires) or being corrosive. If you do a quick search on Google there's a lot to read about it. You will find that it's almost always the first line they have ready right from the start to knock down a fire that could get out of hand.
American fire departments dont care that tactics have changed over the years. Nor are they interested in how other countries fight fire. There is enough video on you tube to prove they are way to stuborn. Its called being closed minded.
Master stream would have been helpful. This will knock down the outside fire while everything is done inside on the first floor (primary). you will not push fire inside by doing this. Very good job.
I imagine water adds weight to the weakening wood structure so they let it burn if firemen are going to enter the building. Also the firemen spray from inside out. This pushes the heat and fire outward.
I know the first truck on scene did not have a deck gun, but boy that would have slowed it down quick, yes I am a firefighter, driver of an e one and pump operator and captain, my crew have there ppe on before we get to the scene, masks on bottles open and just have to drag the line, line is charged as soon as they have it pulled off, less than one minute, exterior fire fighters should not have to wait before a command set up is there, but very good communication for interior crew
I hate when people "like the person recording" tlk shit about what us firefighters do. Like bitch why don't you go thru your training and yr of being a probe and all and become a firefighter. WE are the ones that go into the burning structure and put it out. Wat are you doing besides recording ? And if I'm not mistaking the first company wasn't even a engine company , so they weren't gunna have water until a engine comp. Rolled In. Gets me mad how " civilians" think it's easy wat we do . WE can die from saving YOUR life. -.- not everyone can go full ppe in a structure fire and take it out.
Jon Lopez exactly! my grandfather is a 30 year member of the ronkonkoma fire department in new york. its amazing how people who know nothing about firefighting, make these rediculess comments.
This was a great training video for officers, and members alike. Everyone should just ignore all of the Phony Q.B. talk, telling someone else how to do their job. When you have no idea, or concept of the responsibilities involved in decision making for Life and Death situations. In other words. Unless you've done it. And lived it. You should just stay quiet and LEARN.
A lot of the commenters here need to start reading modern day fire science texts. You cannot push fire, and attacking the fire from the outside first has routinely been shown to produce extremely beneficial results by cooling the entire structure, and making it more tenable to everyone inside. Yes, steam can still play a factor, but not nearly to the point that was once believed.
Well they did a PRIMARY SEARCH of he structure to make sure nobody was trapped. Plus if you notice the first in truck pulled past the structure, they do this so the ladder truck can be put in front of the house to utilize the ladder if needed.
Yes I did, The reason they hit it from the outside in part two was due to the fact the bulk of the fire interior had been taken care of and they lost line pressure, evac was ordered and they regrouped, once they had pressure command asked them to knock down what was outside to make sure there are no further immediate losses of pressure before sending the lines back interior, If he had just ordered the lines back in after they charged they could have lost pressure and there back in the same boat.
Did you watch the second part? The command was given to do a knock down from the outside before going back in. So my question was why didn't they do a knock down from the out side before they went in the first time? It worked well the second time. First knock down the fire on the outside of the structure, and protect the exposures. Then you have plenty of time to fight the fire from the inside.
YOU are right. The 30 years I spent as an active firefighter means nothing to someone like you who has all the answers. Forget training. IF you know everything already. Why need training? FORGIVE ME.
Let’s see what went right or wrong from what we can see. We cannot see everything. 1) Engine failed to lay into the scene or get a hydrant. 2) Nice they left room for a truck company 3) FF remembered to start S&R and completed under 4 min. outstanding 4) Maybe 2 min to interior attack/ops
Thats probibly because we had a very strange winter. we had 2 late in the season snow sotrms. Also some people have deadicated snow pow vehicles and all most never take the plow off the truck. This is Minnesota and mother nature seems to do strange things to our weather.
G.Sarjos: Just because you can upload a video about something does not mean you know anything about it. I am not a firefighter. I am a musician. I see a lot of very bad musicians on RUclips who have the audacity to upload their so-called artistry.
Yes, I am sure the damage has been repaired or the house has been rebuilt. With any luck, the homeowners had enough insurance. Nevertheless, should they decide to sell that house, they will have to disclose the fact that the house suffered a fire.
You should use the YT feature that steadies the shot.. Don't think any amount of water would have helped even if they had gotten water right away.. That house was going..
2:55 water. Got there and out of truck at 24 seconds into video. NOT 5 minutes. And you obviously don’t understand firefighting. They don’t just start putting water on. They need to figure out how to attack the fire. If there are trapped people. Exposures, which may be more important then the primary.
Why does everyone think that the deck gun is the only way to put water on the fire you don’t understand how fast you will run out of your tank water with a deck gun
Those who make statements without full knowledge of the situation at hand, should shut up, those who critisize the Fire Department, why go to FF school and learn what is about, before brash statements.
I would add that nailing that fire from the outside would have pushed fire and smoke into the building. Most of the fire was external and the initial IC did a great job of recognizing that. I agree about the micromanaging chief. (I know what that's like) When someone advising him what the inaudible radio traffic (after three times) he told them to stay off the air. Nice going. This fire ran well despite the chief.
You cannot push fire with water. Hitting it with the deck gun briefly or a handline before making the interior attack at the very least slows down the fire's progress or "resets the fire". Why let it gain in intensity? And hit it with a straight stream to prevent from blocking flowpaths. I think he was telling RIT to stay off the radio by the way.
Rubbish , the fire was inside and had vented, should have hit it hard from outside while interior crews were getting ready to go in. All they did was let the fire get worse.
I'm not going to pretends to be a fightfirer or know how to manage a fire department because i'm a medic. But I can understand there may have multiple derpartments reponding and the need of a cheif on scene but i would of thought a mobile cammand unit for a 2 floor house fire was abit excessive and over reacting... Is the mobile command unit needed if there are more than one chief responding? Anybody willing to educate me?
that was a LOT of exterior fire there... was hoping they would have tried to knock that outside flame down a bit upon arrival... not a surround/drown mind you, just hit that heavy outside flame with the deck gun at least... even the best interior attack still leaves that outside flame lingering... lingering flame ain't no good
you say fire department was on scene for 5 min and no water yet, it does take a min or 2 to pull the line off the engine, hook up to the hydrant and charge the line. There 1st priority is to search for people then (as you heard on the radio traffic "Intier attack) go inside to put water on the fire.
Secondly, the sole goal of firefighters is not "to PUT OUT THE FIRE as quickly and safely as possible." The goal of the fire department is to provide life saving, fire suppression, and other rescue tasks when called upon. And to say firefighting is Hazardous is a god damned understatement. Again, I go back and make note that you have no fire training at all, because every firefighter knows it's dangerous and quite frankly, we as firefighters do everything we can safely so we can go home to our
Remember...fire fighters rules: there own safety first, victims, than personal property. They will do there best to save people and home but more than anything they need to put water lines down for exposures(other houses around the burning one so there isnt 5houses burning). Fightn fire takes strategy and training. Its tough job
Love the sideline QB. No idea how things work. How about you go through fire school, get multiple certs and then after some years under your belt, then you can talk eloquently on how to attack a fire.
at the very beginning when the units were being dispatched out, the only one I haven't heard of is the Salvage Unit, if you dont mind me asking, what is the job of that unit?????
Salvage/Overhaul Unit is a secondary unit part of the Ladder Unit. It's job is to begin to salvage any belongings and overhaul/rip the ceilings down as the fire moves around, helping to vent it from running down and getting it out & up. Dont knock actual units of actual FDs. Youre just too young & stupid. It's called a Rescue nowadays. S/O guys were the only guys inside, along with their Truckie partners not using air because they had to find fire. Imagine that .. Finding fire.
By the time the fire dept arrives, the firemen don their jackets, roll out their hoses, connect to a hydrant, start pumping, the fire has engulfed the entire structure. At that point why bother putting water on it? There's nothing left to save or preserve.
you say fire department was on scene for 5 min. and no water yet, water is not the first thing first they have to do a search for any people that may be trapped. i'm not going to bash you but just think about that.
Why all the name calling? I don't claim to know it all. Never did. My biggest concern isn't whether someone like you likes me, or agree's with me. Safety, and Fire training SAVES LIVES. As for telling people what they should learn. That's why they have Fire Training. What I saw in the video wasn't my opinion alone. I do wonder how many other firefighters just said to themselves...It's not nice to be critic of fellow firefighters. So, when is the best time to keep them safe? After the Funeral?
Based on this video, “transitional attack” would have been a well-advised tactic in this case. Recent NIST testing has disproven the once widely held notion that occupants will be harmed by the “steaming effect”. Rapid cooling by use of proper water application improves the fire environment for victims and firefighters.
Good job overall, I would recommend a stronger attack, and protecting exposures more though. I am not complaining though, they knocked that beast down like nobody's business.
The interior search was already underway. That was not a problem. The major problem was charging their lines. Even after the interior attack was well underway, they had to call it off, and evacuate because they couldn't get any water pressure. That is not good. Then they decided to launch an exterior attack and knock down the exterior fire before going back inside. Why the hell didn't they do that to begin with? First knock down the exterior fire with deck guns. Then launch an interior attack.
Unless you are a firefighter, complaining about not seeing any water for five minutes is foolish. Limited manpower, setting up equipment properly, and maintaining safe conditions for the firefighters COMES FIRST. In such a fire as this. To please YOU, the armchair quarterback. Would you prefer ONE man enter the building with a garden hose just to GET WATER on the fire? If you haven't been there to see what takes place. Your accusation about FIVE MINUTES is just stupid. You should try it before putting someone else down.
plus......in most areas, the "WATER" flows aFFter the search, so no offense mr "5 minutes no water" guy, if you were the one being searched for, you would forget all about that water the the steam you'll just love. OR hell get off the sidewalk, grab a pack, and man up
if you fight the fire from the outside you push the fire to the back of the house causing more damage, is that correct? So you fight it from the inside?
That was what was originally believed however much of this has been debunked by the science. Believe it or not, leaving the fire burning tends to "push fire" into the building, too.
@@FromGamingwithLove0456 ahh ok thanks for the reply. I know they wont just go in with water if there are trapped people because the steam can kill them. Now I see why they have to do a 360 and assess the situation before a plan of attack can be made. Fire Fighters are amazing.
Katz Fam there’s actually a little more to it than that though expansion of water when heated to steam was definitely a factor in traditional firefighting. It’s still “a thing” but it is managed much, much differently by departments who aren’t afraid of overtaking tradition with progress.
The reason there is no water on the fire when the snarky remark was made at the five minute mark is because the men were inside the house conducting a preliminary search for trapped persons. It’s really easy to make critical comments when you don’t have a clue.
They should have had some water on the fire by now. It is true what you said but that is not the only thing that should be getting done at this point in the opperations. Also M. F. D. had really CRAPPY Apparatus!

@2:30 "fire dept has been here for 5 minutes" think you could do it better, join the Fire Service and prove it.
the person says the FD has been there 5 mins and no water yet. watch around 2 mins youll see 2 FF going in to do the primary search.
Then their trainer failed them.
Here in the netherlands they have in 1 minute water on the fire
Its called being closed minded.
my thing is way at 7:18 that gray jeep why does he still have that plow on in the end of april . im worried
Master stream would have been helpful. This will knock down the outside fire while everything is done inside on the first floor (primary). you will not push fire inside by doing this. Very good job.
It appears that the first arriving company (E-17) blocked most of the other units that were arriving from the opposite direction.
Blitz attack may have been an option here. Pull up empty tank through deck gun onto the fire.
Crazy how long it took for these guys to put water on the house
I hate when people "like the person recording" tlk shit about what us firefighters do. Like bitch why don't you go thru your training and yr of being a probe and all and become a firefighter. WE are the ones that go into the burning structure and put it out. Wat are you doing besides recording ? And if I'm not mistaking the first company wasn't even a engine company , so they weren't gunna have water until a engine comp. Rolled In. Gets me mad how " civilians" think it's easy wat we do . WE can die from saving YOUR life. -.- not everyone can go full ppe in a structure fire and take it out.
100% know how you feel bro
Jon Lopez exactly!
my grandfather is a 30 year member of the ronkonkoma fire department in new york. its amazing how people who know nothing about firefighting, make these rediculess comments.
J Common sense and logic are the foundation of everything we Should do. American Fire Playing uses NONE!
This. This, this, this. "tHe WaTeR pUsHeS tHe FiRe" that was absure when it was taught in Fire 1 and it's absurd now.
Then you have plenty of time to fight the fire from the inside.
hey great video. by chance do just have the call audio from this
YOU are right. The 30 years I spent as an active firefighter means nothing to someone like you who has all the answers. Forget training. IF you know everything already. Why need training? FORGIVE ME.
British firefighter here bloody hell why soooooo long for water
Cause there's guys inside doing a primary search. What's up with you Europeans dumping water on the fire with guys inside are you trying to kill them?
Let’s see what went right or wrong from what we can see. We cannot see everything.
1) Engine failed to lay into the scene or get a hydrant.
2) Nice they left room for a truck company
3) FF remembered to start S&R and completed under 4 min. outstanding
4) Maybe 2 min to interior attack/ops
Don't hurry guys, take your time and wait till everybody is here !
whatever your opinions on tactics are... we can't see most of it, and should assume that the firefighters who did the job knew what they were doing.
Thats probibly because we had a very strange winter. we had 2 late in the season snow sotrms. Also some people have deadicated snow pow vehicles and all most never take the plow off the truck. This is Minnesota and mother nature seems to do strange things to our weather.
Thanks to brave men and women that fight fires
A little more "hustle" and some sense of urgency from the FF crews on scene would have been appropriate.
Ahhhhh the arm chair fire fighters are chiming in with there no it all comments , yet non have uploaded any of there own super hero fire vids....
G.Sarjos: Just because you can upload a video about something does not mean you know anything about it. I am not a firefighter. I am a musician. I see a lot of very bad musicians on RUclips who have the audacity to upload their so-called artistry.
Why did the video start in skinny mode then go to wide screen? My apple videos ie ipad only shoot in skinny mode and I hate that.
That house got completely repaired. You can't even tell there was a fire.
Tyler's Neighborhood Garage What are these homes made of it did look like it was going fast and hot also are these century old homes or newer ones
How about rebuilt sounds better
Yes, I am sure the damage has been repaired or the house has been rebuilt. With any luck, the homeowners had enough insurance. Nevertheless, should they decide to sell that house, they will have to disclose the fact that the house suffered a fire.
You should use the YT feature that steadies the shot.. Don't think any amount of water would have helped even if they had gotten water right away.. That house was going..
My complaint about some FF is that when they reach destination, they don’t get in hurry. What if it was their home.
Now that house is rocking!
2:55 water. Got there and out of truck at 24 seconds into video. NOT 5 minutes. And you obviously don’t understand firefighting.
They don’t just start putting water on. They need to figure out how to attack the fire. If there are trapped people. Exposures, which may be more important then the primary.
The Deck Gun would be to easy the Fire would be Out or nearly out.
Why does everyone think that the deck gun is the only way to put water on the fire you don’t understand how fast you will run out of your tank water with a deck gun
Why are so many people walking around videoing with cell phones and not at work???
Those who make statements without full knowledge of the situation at hand, should shut up, those who critisize the Fire Department, why go to FF school and learn what is about, before brash statements.
Great job guys, looked like a nasty fire.
All they did was let the fire get worse.

how slow can they go? .. there is no excuse, none, no excuse for this, naught .. embarrassing to see ...... great video!
Master Stream operations by the first due Engine would have been helpful..
Nah, that high pressure stream would of done more damage then waiting and getting a hand line inside. Plus they had to search for people inside.
Master stream would of done a lot more damage to the house then waiting and getting a hand line inside.
Not at all from the start sir,, you will actually push the fire thru the house
poor people who live there...
that was a LOT of exterior fire there... was hoping they would have tried to knock that outside flame down a bit upon arrival... not a surround/drown mind you, just hit that heavy outside flame with the deck gun at least... even the best interior attack still leaves that outside flame lingering... lingering flame ain't no good
Why didn't the first arriving apparatus give first arriving report
you say fire department was on scene for 5 min and no water yet, it does take a min or 2 to pull the line off the engine, hook up to the hydrant and charge the line.
Again, I go back and make note that you have no fire training at all, because every firefighter knows it's dangerous and quite frankly, we as firefighters do everything we can safely so we can go home to our
never buy houses that are close to each other
Remember...fire fighters rules: there own safety first, victims, than personal property. They will do there best to save people and home but more than anything they need to put water lines down for exposures(other houses around the burning one so there isnt 5houses burning). Fightn fire takes strategy and training. Its tough job
This strategy works great.
All the nitwits pulling cell phones out to record.
Nothing else they can do. Police and fire always show up screaming get back!
Has the cause been determined on any of these videos? That would be interesting.
Indeed a good attack deck gun would have helped alot
Dedicated professionals, fantastic job.
Good job overall, I would recommend a stronger attack, and protecting exposures more though. I am not complaining though, they knocked that beast down like nobody's business.
And by the way, that was done safely. Was anybody hurt or killed? Didn't think so.
why are so many homes built of timber? A potential fire risk to begin with.
why is there a snow plow on the jeep in the summer?
Well managed exept for the fire at the front of the house
The interior search was already underway. That was not a problem. The major problem was charging their lines. Even after the interior attack was well underway, they had to call it off, and evacuate because they couldn't get any water pressure. That is not good. Then they decided to launch an exterior attack and knock down the exterior fire before going back inside. Why the hell didn't they do that to begin with?
First knock down the exterior fire with deck guns. Then launch an interior attack.
Loudest eq2b siren please hurry up water
Very nice neighborhood.
OR hell get off the sidewalk, grab a pack, and man up
“ThE’Ve bEeN HeRe foR 5 mIn aNd SiLl nO WaTer” this dudes clueless.
Three trucks no water yet
if you fight the fire from the outside you push the fire to the back of the house causing more damage, is that correct?
@@FromGamingwithLove0456 thanks for the info. Learned alot from you. Are you a firefighter?
Katz Fam Yes- 16 years.
I find American houses can take easily fire most of them are built with wood and plastic
Nice Work Firefighters !
I never see jeep wranglers with plows
That poor house....
I think the truck should be made so water is blasted on the fire in the first 5 seconds after showing up.
The reason there is no water on the fire when the snarky remark was made at the five minute mark is because the men were inside the house conducting a preliminary search for trapped persons. It’s really easy to make critical comments when you don’t have a clue.
Too many radios and too little water.
Seriously dude, you obviously have no idea what it takes to be a firefighter. Keep those type of comments to yourself. It's disrespectful.
Maybe the guy filming should become a firefighter. He seems like an expert maybe he could’ve got the water on the fire quicker. What a dope.
They should have had some water on the fire by now. It is true what you said but that is not the only thing that should be getting done at this point in the opperations. Also M. F. D. had really CRAPPY Apparatus!
Searches could have been faster as also the initial attack.
