L take on The Spot, he's compelling because it's a look into the collateral damage superheroes can cause and potentially make people bitter and vitriolic towards heroes. The fact that he's played as a joke in the beginning is great at subverting audience expectation to make him such an intimidating villain later on once he utilizes his powers correctly.

From kung-fu panda to how to train your dragon to puss in boots the last wish they have delivered fantastic stories, amazing characters, great action and unforgettable moments. Idk about your take man. I don’t really agree with any of your point either than narrative. When it comes to power level and impact i felt like the point can be summed down to consistently (i know im simplifying a bit but its a youtube comment so take it easy). Most fight that has 0 consistency or bad choreography are still quite good if it has a narrative weight to it. I remember watching cap vs iron man and was still pretty excited ignoring a lot of power level inconsistency. Same goes with so many fight scenes like in daredevil or lord of the rings. I remember when Gandalf came in and safe the battle in helms deep leading a cavalry charge down a hill I was quite excited because it was very well written. But then I watched it again on youtube, then I realized all the horses will just tumble down the hills. In the moment I definitely didn’t think or care to think about the logistics of sending an entire calvalry charge down a hill into a bunch of shield and spears pointing at the horses because I was already invested in the narrative and simply didn’t focus on that, the same can be said for pretty mucb everyone who watched LOTR. I think good fight scenes relies on the narrative to hide away elements that can’t be hide, like plot armor or the fact that you probably can’t actually punch the stuntman, or you just realized in the editing room that the long-take isn’t completely perfect. Only when the story is really fucking bad that you realize a lot of the flaws pointed out like battle of winterfell where the narrative makes no sense so rather than actually being invested you kinda just don’t give a shit. Same goes for pointless fight scenes without any narrative weight like the Spot fight scene, or like 80% of the new MCU movies. Fight kinda just happens for the sake of fighting and that makes the fight scene prone to nit-picking. My main point is, in my opinion, the only truly important element is narrative, the rest are secondary and if done well is just a plus. If you want good consistency and actual fighting skills try the UFC.
Your video was very good and i agree a lot with your criteria for what makes a fight scene good, I still disagree with you however, on the idea that power scaling is completely useless just because a significant portion of people go about it the wrong way
I mean it is what it is. Although its funny because the boys generally has really good effects but homelander taking off always looks like piss. But honestly I think they could have made the fight scenes better by adding blood like invincible does. Because hl vs sb just feels like 2 bricks slapping each other. They should've had physical damage.
the most embarrasing fight was in the boys season 2 when they were fighting stormfront, like that shit was ASS, they were swinging at her like little girls, it looked like a fight out of a kindergarten, most fights in the boys are pretty shitty but that one almost gave me a headache
Underrated comment. You also got to see them punch pieces of each others bodies off. Those movies also did a good job of putting stakes into the fight. You never knew who was going to make it through
ip man, any movie by jet lee or jacky chan, and the raid redemption, and dread... these all have awesome specical fight scenes fights that are not only perfectly shot, but also have some of the most inspired stunt work and skillful coriography you will ever see.
I really enjoyed Arcane despite never playing league of legends because of this. Aside from the great story, every fight feels real, every movement has weight and every hit has inertia. And it is an animation, an animation that has fights that feel more real than most live actions.
Honestly I actually really enjoy unnecessary flippy dippy shit during fight scenes sometimes. If I ever got to make a Spider-Man show I feel like I'd be doing the character a disservice if he wasn't bouncing around like a maniac, moving between the ground, the walls and the ceiling in between attacks. I feel as long as it's done right cinematography wise, with crunchy sound design and believable impact in the "recipient", that shit could honestly be pretty beautiful. Even if in a real life fight shit like that wouldn't really fly obviously Fantastic video by the way, I really enjoyed the structure of this one. Especially when Kung Fu Panda sprung on screen as the antithesis to the ranting that was previously done. That movie is some fire shit
I would like an analysis on the spot (as a villain). What do mean by "least compelling". Like legit, I wanna know why you say /thoughts on his place in the story.
from what I see, while the Spot has much more power and potential, hes just this random guy who gets pissed at miles because hes not taking seriously. he did get his life ruined by miles but for the most part this movie treats him like a joke, which he is at the beginning but then you have Kingpin and the Prowler (who i consider the main antagonists in the movie), both are treated and ARE threats to miles. Kingpin mourns the loss of his family, like miles loses his uncle, but both are different in how they cope with it, as kingpin wants to bring them back. The Prowler has this menacing presence and completely outclasses miles, but is then revealed to be his uncle which makes him much more important to miles.
@@marvo9306 The whole point is that he's a joke at the start of the movie and he's extremely intimidating by the end of it. Literally all the stakes are driven by The Spot by the end because Miles is on a clock now.
@@marvo9306 I guess... I was going to write about his role as a literary device, but then I realized that that's completely irrelevant to the point. Let's hope he gets more screentime in the next movie.
Whether or not a fight is realistic or looks like a real event doesn't matter to me. My suspension of disbelief will cover that. I can accept some punches being off the mark because we don't want a real guy's nose broken just as much as I can accept a wizard casting a CGI spell. In my mind, I'll accept both as reality for the purposes of consuming the story. Where things break for me is when the story itself doesn't make sense. I'm fine with Superman existing, but I'm not fine with him dying to a random racoon bite. If the writer has shown a character to be super durable before, I'll hold that against them later when they make the character lose. Same goes for a previously established weak character winning. The writer better have a good reason, or else my immersion will be broken. Spider-man defeating Venom through the use of sound is a great example of this. How did the weak guy beat the strong guy? Well, the strong guy had a weakness. If there were no weakness, however, then I would have a hard time believing the fight. Even Kung Fu Panda does this. The reason Tai Lung lost to Po wasn't that Po had higher stats or a superior style. It was because his entire worldview got destroyed in the middle of a life or death battle and his insta-kill move didn't work on pandas. If neither of those were the case, then Kung Fu Panda would join the ranks of bad movies where the villain has to be nerfed for the final battle.
fight scenes in action movies are like musical numbers in musicals. If they don't mean anything for the story, drag on too long, or aren't preformed well then they're pointless and should be removed or changed. A fight scene doesn't inherently make a movie better, but shitty directors just see it as a cheat code to extend a movies run time. Best action movie is Hardcore Henry. It barely has a plot, but each fight scene feels important and has amazing impact. It is the opera of action. Peak movie.
In fairness to Invincible the fight between Omni Man and Mark still holds narrative significance and Mark is left with a lot of psychological trauma afterwards. Just because he makes a full recovery offscreen doesn't mean that the brutality of the fight was not significant.
I'm just gonna say this once If you keep this level of quality on your videos, you are gonna get into the hundreds of thousands of subscribers eventually. Keep it up brother
Been binging your videos and they’re really good, really makes me think about the media i konsum. I just wanna ask why you sometimes throw footage deadspace in your videos. I don’t get how they’re relevant to the video.
I think it’s hard to make real fighting look exciting because what really works isn’t always cool. If you watch 2 of the best people in the world fight it’s not always so 2 sided. Especially when you’re on the ground it’s mostly waiting for opportunities to arise while being in a good position and in stand up it’s a lot of prep and game plan which is why people would rather just watch the head kick rather than the body kicks that lower their hands to set it up.
Thoughts on the fight scenes in Reacher? I feel like they were pretty good at making him obviously an extremely efficient fighter, while still making him vulnerable (other than the last fight which let it down a bit)
Your vidoes are pretty great mate. I think the fight scene should tell you a lot about a character (how creative they are, how they solve problems, etc...) it should advance the plot (the hero has to fight to get to reach an objective, the second matrix movie had story then a fight scene for no reason x repeat), it shouldnt be obvious who'd win; in game of thrones, you didnt know if the lannisters or the baratheons would win the battle, it made it more compelling.
Gore is often used as a crutch by bad writers to make it appear as if a fight has stakes and tension. Kung Fu Panda has no graphic content whatsoever and manages to be tense and have high stakes. Blood should never be the focus of a scene, but it should be present if the show is intended for a more mature audience. People don't risk their lives for no reason, you need a very solid reason for your character to risk their lives like that. Pretty much blood and gore should just be there for immersion. In real life, fighters aren't trying to make their opponents bleed, but it happens as a result of fighting. But for the most part, they're trying to end the fight as quickly as possible. So for fights to go on and on with blood and dismemberment often works against them. It breaks immersion and it's also ugly and uncomfortable to watch. Same thing with sex and nudity. I don't think it can ever be justified in movies. Unless they go to the beach. Or in a movie like "It follows" where sex is a main theme, then it makes sense. And they still approach it with more class than a show like GoT which is supposed to be about cutthroat medieval politics.
Oh lastly, one of my favorite battles of all time is Darth Vader vs Luke. I prefer the Bespin one where Luke is totally powerless and is defeated in all aspects: pure strength, technique, strategy and force ability. But the 2nd fight is also great where they're not just clashing swords in that one. Fights are best when it's a result of two people being unable to settle their differences any other way after having tried. Fights need to be about something important. Okay I'm done monologuing now.
Eh, most media that shows gore uses it to emphasize the quickness of it. Other than Invincible and the Boys, that have literal superheroes in it, most gorey fights end quickly, emphasizing the brutality. I do agree that some media makes gore their only selling point, same with nudity and sex, but like RSG said in the video, if it conveys impact, it is only one layer of the fight. Everything else has to come hand in hand for it to work tastefully
@@jsmith434w I do agree that damage and impact can be shown without blood. But I think you do get icked out by it to easily and I don't think you should use it as a criticism. I personally don't have a problem with gore because its not real. And I would like to know the example you're referring to when you talk about how dudes continue fighting despite being bloodied up and dismembered. Because I cannot recall one time someone has been dismembered and continued fighting. But yeah I like your analysis, and kung fu panda is in fact the goat so thank you.
@@praisethesun3089 Conveys impact, maybe yes. It's more immersive to have gore, but it doesn't mean you have to put the camera on it. It doesn't have to and shouldn't become an additional character in the scene. I guess my issue is with gratuitous violence (and sex). Here's some great examples of gore: ghost in the shell: ripping off her arm to destroy the tank has real, long lasting consequences. taking off her clothes is essential to the story, and also subverts the nudity trope in two ways: because she's not really naked, and because it highlights how low the world had sunken to that she has to expose herself like that. its definitely world building and character development for her to do that. i know she's not really naked, but from a story telling perspective, it's treated as if she was, as if she was exposed and vulnerable. it's why she gets dressed back up again. it's even more shameful for her, because i believe being robotic is part of her character motivations to begin with. the wheole movie is really a masterclass in writing. akira: body horror, loss of control. it's the whole theme. the gore isn't about gore, it's about loss of control. it's a story telling tool kill bill: when she takes the eye from Elle, sure there's always some indulgence in Quentin Tarantino movie, but it's a very poetic ending for the character of Elle, and it shows that Beatrix isn't pursuing revenge because she enjoys murder, but because she's *very* spiteful. pulp fiction: killing the black guy in the car has HUGE story implication. you dont just gore someone and move on. it's a big deal. and this movie does a good job treating it as such. then you get invincible where the dude gets punched over and over and he's just... fine. sorry but the human brain can only take so much trauma because you go unconscious or in a coma. the boys constantly have gratuitous violence just to show how edgy they are, but there is no consequence to it whatsoever. they make a spectacle out of goring human beings. there is no weight to it. when the racist girl kills the asian brother, why does she break his hands first? it's just gratuitous. homelander destroying the crowd with his laser is actually when i got done being taken for a fool by these writers who cant commit to what they write. dream sequences really fuck me off, but this one took the cake as one of the worst intances of writer's cowardice of all time. they treat gore like Michael Bay treats explosions, one every couple minutes just to keep a bird brained audience somewhat focused on the screen to dupe them into thinking something important is happening. But it's just noise. The Boys and Invincible want so bad to be different, the be an elevated version of what they're criticizing, but they are the lowest version of it. it's for the birds.
Rest of us: "All the guy does is complain about our favorite fights and characters and movies. RSG 2:"There, I told you the PERFECT Fight scene. WHATEVER I ever did, I did to make you proud! Tell me how Proud you are Fan Boys!" Tell me! TELL MEEEE!!!!!"
6:43 To be fair on that particular part my good sir is that Cap has neutralized tony's suit's thrusters. And you also forgetting that the suit is taking damage from Cap and bucky during the fight scenes. So thats why he cudnt get out of it like he did with Thor. P.S this was more of an emotional fight from Tony instead of tactical so i think that also counts for his state of mind.

You realise most would probably be bad at it just because they know how to fight and have fought that doesnt mean they will be good at choreographing the fights
As a fight choreographer, I get irritated when fans watch horrible fight scenes and say their the best ever. Then, when I explain in detail the ridiculousness of the fight, they always go with "different people like different thomgs". I do think your criteria is vague and leaves allot to the eye of the beholder. Better criteria would be Length of fight. Was the time given too long or too short based upon what story the fight is supposed to tell. Would be an example.

Didnt you say kung fu is gymnastics? Then kung fu panda is considered the pinnacle of fight scenes:p Thanks for ruining the cap v iron man scene. Great points tho, gore really does make great action scenes.
You find TheBoys's gore realistic ? I think it looks goofy. There's a reason only horror movies and crappy action b-movies had gore, and it's not because they didn't care about their scenes. It's because gore on screen looks silly. It's a cheap way to catch attention. We don't need to see it, our imagination is more than enough. Breaking Bad has so many assassination scenes, and yet the closest thing to gore we have is a blown up leg for a split second, or some bones and meat falling of the ceiling, which impacts the viewers way more than the constant gore shown on TheBoys, because it's the contrast that matters. TheBoys show so much gore that it doesn't even get an "ew" out of me after 3 episodes. I don't like Kung Fu Panda much, but it definitely has sick fight scenes. I still remember them despite only watching it once. The fight scenes in Star Wars the Clone Wars were incredible, too. It excels anything I've ever seen from the movies. The best fight scenes from real movies that I've seen were from The Jason Bourne Identity. It's not over-the-top unrealistic, the hits have weight, you can feel it's physically demanding, it's well-choreographed and the camera angles are engaging. The Jackie Chan movies had some pretty good fighting, too. Your example of punches not landing were good, but I don't get what you mean with the bullets. What do you expect, that a body just explodes in pieces when hit by a bullet ? Unless you land a head-shot, or you're packing a sawed shotgun, there isn't going to be blood and organs flying all over. I haven't seen all those shitty action movies but the guys in John Wick's clip seem to be wearing vests, or at least thick clothing. A pistol's bullets aren't going to make blood splash out of that.

The fact that he's played as a joke in the beginning is great at subverting audience expectation to make him such an intimidating villain later on once he utilizes his powers correctly.
This is why I like the fights in (fog hill of the five elements, and fire force) so much. The shear impact of the attacks and the choreography make you tense with every hit. Great video 👍
Just watched this video and your speedster video. Very sound arguments and good reasoning, a great watch. You just earned yourself another subscriber
Same, I came here from the "how to actually write a speedster". video
I disagree with the technique section, I love incredibly choreographed and incredibly gimmicky fight scenes.
For me i just think that section was wack cuz it was a big side tangent and he barely talked bout what kind of tech he thinks is cool, good, or stuff (tho i also wanna say that most peeps online dont know what martial arts skill is, and i barely grasp it)

@@joshuamorgan9517 Bad movies can have good fight scenes
Endgame had too many characters to fight at once to recreate a good war scenario
Endgame purposefully didn't bring Magneto who could solo all of Thanos army including Thanos or Dark Phoenix just because of how much it trivializes all the other heroes.
If you say gore adds a lot to the fight scenes, then I guess it should be a surprise that I enjoy the fight scenes in _Kung Fu Panda_ so much despite not having gore.
Whoever is in charge at dreamworks is absolutely smashing it! From kung-fu panda to how to train your dragon to puss in boots the last wish they have delivered fantastic stories, amazing characters, great action and unforgettable moments. Well done to them and glad someone else recognises how good their stuff is
Idk about your take man. If you want good consistency and actual fighting skills try the UFC.
ngl bro did NOT cook until like the last 30 seconds of the video
Your video was very good and i agree a lot with your criteria for what makes a fight scene good, I still disagree with you however, on the idea that power scaling is completely useless just because a significant portion of people go about it the wrong way
Not just the people that power scale but power scaling in general is pretty flawed
bro in defence of the boys they don't have the budget of the fight scenes that we desire
@@RSG200 yeah they could and they probably should but it is wat it is🤷🏻♂️😂

I don't think we will ever see a real fight scene... unless it's the stuff of LEGEND!
I literally said “Ooh, a video on fight scenes” when the notification popped up 💀
the most embarrasing fight was in the boys season 2 when they were fighting stormfront, like that shit was ASS, they were swinging at her like little girls, it looked like a fight out of a kindergarten, most fights in the boys are pretty shitty but that one almost gave me a headache
Transformers always did a really good job, I love how they don’t fight like humans
Underrated comment. You also got to see them punch pieces of each others bodies off. Those movies also did a good job of putting stakes into the fight. You never knew who was going to make it through
What did the spot do to you😬
ip man, any movie by jet lee or jacky chan, and the raid redemption, and dread... these all have awesome specical fight scenes fights that are not only perfectly shot, but also have some of the most inspired stunt work and skillful coriography you will ever see.
I really enjoyed Arcane despite never playing league of legends because of this. Aside from the great story, every fight feels real, every movement has weight and every hit has inertia. And it is an animation, an animation that has fights that feel more real than most live actions.
this video rocks, you rock
John wick was initially so refreshing to the mass audience's i think, because it focused on the fight scene.
I never thought i'd find someone else who shared my burning hatred for those dumbass tiktok powerscaling videos.
Same
This video is just an elaborate plan so that he can secretly praise Spiderman 3 which is a masterpiece
my favorite fight scenes are from walt and jessie slapping each other until they get too tired and just lie on the floor together
The whole Ironman cap thing is that iron man is reduced to no flying and just a metal suit with some blasters
Even if in a real life fight shit like that wouldn't really fly obviously
Fantastic video by the way, I really enjoyed the structure of this one.
Especially when Kung Fu Panda sprung on screen as the antithesis to the ranting that was previously done.
That movie is some fire shit
"There Is No Secret Ingredient... It just you" my favorite line from Kung fu panda, this is a all you need just belive in yourself

I would like an analysis on the spot (as a villain). What do mean by "least compelling". Like legit, I wanna know why you say /thoughts on his place in the story.
I want to know what he has against Invincible too
from what I see, while the Spot has much more power and potential, hes just this random guy who gets pissed at miles because hes not taking seriously. he did get his life ruined by miles but for the most part this movie treats him like a joke, which he is at the beginning
but then you have Kingpin and the Prowler (who i consider the main antagonists in the movie), both are treated and ARE threats to miles.

NARUTO VS SASUKE THEIR LAST FIGHT IS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST FIGHT SCENES IN ALL FICTION
Idk if you give advice on what you like in writing, but what do you define as "Expert in hand to hand combat"? Like any advice for someone who writes.
If I had to guess what he wanted, I’d have to say he wants every attack to be meaningful and have impact
fight scenes in action movies are like musical numbers in musicals. Peak movie.
No mention of atom eve’s episode? That was great !
The Raid Redemption fight scenes are some I really enjoyed. I'll have to watch again to see if it holds up.
In fairness to Invincible the fight between Omni Man and Mark still holds narrative significance and Mark is left with a lot of psychological trauma afterwards. Just because he makes a full recovery offscreen doesn't mean that the brutality of the fight was not significant.
I'm just gonna say this once
If you keep this level of quality on your videos, you are gonna get into the hundreds of thousands of subscribers eventually.
I also love boys :)
Thoughts on the fight scenes in Reacher? I feel like they were pretty good at making him obviously an extremely efficient fighter, while still making him vulnerable (other than the last fight which let it down a bit)
What’s the name for the background music at 4:35? thanks
One film franchise with really strong fight scenes are those Kingsman films. I have never seen anything like that before in my life lol
I dont know why you always hate on powerscaling but i think its kinda fun if you do it right.
think i just found a gem in all of youtube
Your vidoes are pretty great mate.
I think the fight scene should tell you a lot about a character (how creative they are, how they solve problems, etc...) it should advance the plot (the hero has to fight to get to reach an objective, the second matrix movie had story then a fight scene for no reason x repeat), it shouldnt be obvious who'd win; in game of thrones, you didnt know if the lannisters or the baratheons would win the battle, it made it more compelling.
Maybe not perfect but Oldboy corridor fight scene is amazing.
Here's some great examples of gore:
ghost in the shell:
ripping off her arm to destroy the tank has real, long lasting consequences. taking off her clothes is essential to the story, and also subverts the nudity trope in two ways: because she's not really naked, and because it highlights how low the world had sunken to that she has to expose herself like that. its definitely world building and character development for her to do that. i know she's not really naked, but from a story telling perspective, it's treated as if she was, as if she was exposed and vulnerable. it's why she gets dressed back up again. it's even more shameful for her, because i believe being robotic is part of her character motivations to begin with. the wheole movie is really a masterclass in writing.
akira:
body horror, loss of control. it's the whole theme. the gore isn't about gore, it's about loss of control. it's a story telling tool
kill bill:
when she takes the eye from Elle, sure there's always some indulgence in Quentin Tarantino movie, but it's a very poetic ending for the character of Elle, and it shows that Beatrix isn't pursuing revenge because she enjoys murder, but because she's *very* spiteful.
pulp fiction:
killing the black guy in the car has HUGE story implication. you dont just gore someone and move on. it's a big deal. and this movie does a good job treating it as such.
then you get invincible where the dude gets punched over and over and he's just... fine. sorry but the human brain can only take so much trauma because you go unconscious or in a coma. the boys constantly have gratuitous violence just to show how edgy they are, but there is no consequence to it whatsoever. they make a spectacle out of goring human beings. there is no weight to it. when the racist girl kills the asian brother, why does she break his hands first? it's just gratuitous.
homelander destroying the crowd with his laser is actually when i got done being taken for a fool by these writers who cant commit to what they write. dream sequences really fuck me off, but this one took the cake as one of the worst intances of writer's cowardice of all time.
they treat gore like Michael Bay treats explosions, one every couple minutes just to keep a bird brained audience somewhat focused on the screen to dupe them into thinking something important is happening. But it's just noise. The Boys and Invincible want so bad to be different, the be an elevated version of what they're criticizing, but they are the lowest version of it. it's for the birds.
@@jsmith434wMaybe don’t call the audience birdbrained because that sounds incredibly unkind.

Better criteria would be
Length of fight. Was the time given too long or too short based upon what story the fight is supposed to tell.

Finally someone dogs on the boys fight scenes, Season 3 was a big let down.
Ah yes, a man with a very good opinion. Nice
