I teach at a school (higher education) and I've begun to notice many of my fellow lecturers and professors switch to Mac from windows. What surprised me was that some of these professors teach IT/ Data/ AI (including deep learning) and I've never ever seen them use a Mac . One of them had the XPS model and sold it off after less than a month of using it (he bought the RTX4050 version because he wanted to do some development and machine learning). When I asked why the change, he mentioned how the MacOS reduced a lot of dependency issues and things were much much more streamlined then windows. There's also no point in a GPU enable laptop for AI as cloud computing services are more powerful and efficient.
I am a computer engineer and I feel the same. I use windows because there's certain programs that are just not worth/possible to virtualize or emulate but I'll only use custom built desktops. I will never buy a windows laptop. I feel none of them are built to the quality of a MacBook and I also love the integration between all of my devices, and the OS is simply getting better over the years whereas windows is stagnating. I just wish there was a way to dualboot windows on the M chips but without using parallels or UTM. I daily an i9 12900k/32gb ddr5/3060ti on my windows PC but I also have a 2013 Mac Pro that msrped for $4000 over a decade ago and I got it for $160. It is insanely fast and does everything I need it to. Apple is great if you buy their products second hand. Especially the older M1 chips because they are still pretty fast and you can pick up a MacBook with one for cheap if you look around.
2:40 If only there was a big laptop company, that had developed a new standard for RAM modules, that are replaceable and on par with soldered memory, when it comes to speed. Guess we CAMMOT have everything...
A new modular version is coming out called LPCAMM2, but it is likely not to be adopted by the consumer market immediately. It is more for data centres. It has the benefits of LPDDR5X (speed/latency) but is modular. However, it has its own board, so it is not exactly the same. For example, if you have 16GB and want to upgrade to 32GB, you have to buy a 32GB board and have an e-waste 16GB board.
@@ahaimes6320 which is still better than to throw away an entire laptop and if you bought a laptop with 2 8GB sticks and want to upgrade, you will have to throw away two perfectly good RAM sticks.
I don’t understand the function keys.... didn’t they learn anything from Apple’s experience? WHY? WHY WHY? this computer would be an almost perfect laptop but that bar on top, specially the lack of a physical ESC key is definitely a deal breaker
Not sure if this video mentioned this but the standard screen on the xps is a 1080p screen lol. Nothing wrong with that but for that price you shouldn't need to pay extra for a better screen. Imagine if apple did this for their macbooks lol.
ARM is still not matured - the translation system from x86 to ARM isn’t as developed for me to justify switching to a MacBook yet. Most of my software I use in medical research is 20-30 years old, and is designed for 32 bit x86 interfaces… a trusty Intel processor beats any fancy Apple Silicon or Snapdragon processor for me
The next gen 14/16 Dell XPS needs lunar Lake, physical function row keys, bigger battery and it will sell a lot! These touch function keys ruin the Dell XPS line! 💯💯💯
It used to be mid-range but is now premium, the price at least in the UK, £2400, which is in line with the XPS 14. However, it does not have all the negatives of the latter.
One self-evident reason is that the fastest consumer RAM of 7000mHz+ is only on LPDDR5X, and so far, that is not available as a modular choice! Other reasons include the soldered RAM being placed on the SoC for faster access and lower latency compared to modular. LPCAMM2 is coming, which will address some of these, but I am not sure consumers will see it for a while.
RAM sockets cause major latency issues plus LPDDR5 is more efficient than socketed DDR5 while having much higher memory speeds and bandwidths. And not having sockets to increase latency also helps.
I hate the built in trackpad. It ALWAYS has problems picking up clicks when I'm not trying to click, and sometimes the click gets stuck and there's nothing I can do but wait a few seconds for it to unclick. SUPER annoying. In case you're wondering, there are no setting changes that have helped.
Your brain is actually rotted by these companies about some of the points you mentioned: You said the ram being sottered was good because better memory clock speeds, but when does that actually matter (outside of when it is acting as vram for graphics for mobile graphics such as Arc integrated graphics, aka not the model you reviewed, and even then, its not crucial enough to sacrifice upgradability!!) Having your ram sottered means dell locks you into your choice at the time of purchase, not letting you choose different configurations is a massive L, considering the existence of LPDDR being fast, and Dell has already developed LPCAMM2 before ditching ram modules and following apple's lead. As for complaining about... having settings for your graphics being bad??? Because we all know user choice is horrible and we should entrust the companies to know what we want, right? But seriously, why are you complaining that you can set different power brackets for it, but not complaining that we can't tweak fan curves, or how dell makes most parts unavailable to replace yourself. There are zero downsides to including these things like a framework or Tuxedo laptops have, yet instead you say apple's way of no power settings is better.
It's actually really funny how dell has a latitude 9440 and the new 9450 version of the xps 14 that is almost exactly the laptop what I and many other people wanted from the xps 14. It even has a physical function row and stuff. What a constant disappointment from Dell. Should've never expected anything from this.
Worst laptop I ever used. Got a G14, in less than 10 minutes it bricked. Replaced it with another G14, and it was getting very hot and crashed, got a 3rd G14 and it ran fine until it started crashing on idle office work (Kernel Power 41 error). Lost 3 hours of research work due to the random reboot. Went to the subreddit of Zephyrus and this is a chronic issue. Asus ROG laptops may look good on paper but are extremely bad as they are plagued with QC issues, reliability concerns and a non existent customer support. I’d not call it a MacBook replacement because most people buy MacBooks for reliability and stability - and Asus isn’t even close to that. At least Dell laptops are reliable and in cases when they have issues, their support is perhaps the best in the industry. All offices including my own organization uses only Dell machines for this very reason
The reason I'm not using a Mac is price... Consider this, in my EU country I was considering a 15" MB Air, and I ended up buying an Asus Zenbook 14. Zenbook PROs: 14" OLED screen, one word, gorgeous (and color accurate), 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, latest Intel can compete with Apple silicon, CONs: battery life not as long as MB Air, screen a bit smaller, Win 11. But I still get 12 hours of light use (YT, browsing) So all day. Or I could have got a MB Air 15 for almost twice the price of the Zenbook for an IPS panel, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, but it has MacOS and the battery would have lasted for 15 hrs instead of 12. Instead I bought another Zenbook 14 for a family member.... Was I wrong? :)
Long term, yes, short term, no. Take it from experience, those windows laptops degrade performance significantly faster over time. They come out of the box and they are amazing, and in a few years it’s overheated and slow. Macs are rarely very impressive at first glance, and you pay more, but in a decade it will probably still be good. So as long as you are fine with upgrading more often then it’s totally worth it to get the Zenbook. It’s always a trade off for everything in life.
Another Way to think about it, which might seem like bs, but I hope not: How much money is your time worth? How many minutes or hours every week are you going to be spending just a little bit frustrated? Frustrated in a way that the Mac won't frustrate you. It works both ways of course, if you're not used to Mac OS it can be frustrating. And it took me I think 2 weeks when I first got my Mac years ago to acclimate. After that, I always thought Mac was more predictable than Windows so I could predict how much time I would have to spend doing things, whereas on Windows it was unpredictable.
@@ByteSizedSociety Yeah a big part of that is reliability. Windows forces updates that lock you out of your computer and wont even let you use it until they are done. Over and over for years and years. macOS never does this. And I once ran my MacBook Pro with zero resets, sleeping it when I was done, for a total of around 256 days according to the system settings report. No slowdowns, no overheating, and no updates. I just shook the mouse and got to work for almost a full year with zero problems or interruptions. That kind of maintenance free computing is worth every penny for something we all have to use daily now.
@@ghost-user559 That's a great anecdote ghost user. This is kind of a tangent .. some More expensive products, compared to their competitors, are not worth the expense. Mac computers seem to be worth the expense. It has taken me a long time to accept, to trust really, that at least for the MacBooks, those things are a fantastic value when compared to say a Windows computer that's 2/3 the price. I've experienced the same thing that you have, just about ...not 200 and something days though, that is a lot. If you're getting a PC that's 25% of the price .. you know kind of like a $400 laptop .. that runs Windows And all you're doing is not even really web browsing but maybe watching RUclips or something, then that's a hard to beat value proposition. Ridiculously challenging to get anything done. Noodle hands.

Windows default config is overloaded with heavy security and some compatibility features, compared to macOS and Linux. That makes it noticeably heavier in use, especially on ultrabooks.
Thanks for this video and the interesting comparison. I have been working with Apple based Hardware for the past 10 years and never looked back after switching from Windows. These comparisons are very interesting because I never really bother to see what everybody else is doing. However, at the end of the day it comes down to the operating system itself and for my workflow nothing beats MacOS. If I had to pick something else, I'd go for Linux but why bother buying a Windows based laptop, getting rid of the OS and installing Linux? It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Because basically 99% of laptops outside of macs come with windows pre-installed? So obviously if you want to use linux you would need to install it which isn't hard to be fair. They are some special linux manufacturers like Tuxedo, System76...etc but you will not see their laptops on physical stores like BestBuy. Some manufacturers like Dell or HP offer a linux option which is cheaper but they offer ubuntu and someone could prefer to use Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch or Debian.
No physical escape and delete keys...what a crap! ARM with Windows will be useless as well because not much native software will be available. I think ARM with Linux is the only right way to go.
The number one issue with Windows laptops for me is: Windows. And the market speaks for itself, Windows is leading a slow death. Their market share is declining every year in a declining market. Yes, less and less people buy a pcs or windows laptops. There's no need. Even gamers are not putting in a dent. Less and less gpus and cpus are sold every quarter. It is dying because of Windows and the ancient hardware. Well ofc also because pricing, who wants to pay 2000dollars for a 4090 that sucks 600watts, it belongs in a museum not for sale.

I really do hate it that most notebooks come with Intel chips, they basically suck. Why not AMD? Seriously, AMD chips are by far better than any of the hot trash that Intel's been putting out lately.
The amount of watts out of this machine is ridiculous. This thing should be like $999.....tops. Just for giggles, I spec'd out the machine to remotely what I would want. It would take the machine to over $2300. I purchased a beast of a machine in the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, with a 4090, for $2600. The XPS machine is a joke. Dell always reminds me why I purchase competitors machines.
Can’t install Linux natively (easily) on a MacBook. “Windows machines” is a terrible term. Power settings are pretty much the same. Drivers are a thing on windows and Linux. As someone who uses all three OS, pick the tool for the job.
I have both a Macbook Pro and this machine. The Mac has at least twice the battery life and no fan noise. This machine has an excellent implementation of Face ID and a quality camera without the ugly notch of the Macbook Pro.. As an engineer I see Apples continued use of the notch to be pure laziness and no reason for it.

Dumb take. Not everyone has the space for a desktop and having a portable device that can be taken to school or at least be lugged around the house is a lot more convenient than being rooted to a desk all the time.
I'll never buy a mac because I can't game on it and do my 3d stuff like I do on my windows laptop (even though I hate windows for it's instability and other issues). The macs are too expensive when you configure them to a useable ram and storage and they don't offer OLED displays (I'm a little biased but...) so I'll never buy one.

With all this, I get 3-4 hours from the Battery. I won't say shabby, but the fact that my M1 Pro 14' MBP lasts almost twice with the exact same settings [Brightness etc] with the exact same apps running is just insane, infuriating and mind-boggling to say the least.
That MacBook has a Mini-LED Display [as opposed to my XPS' UHD+ IPS Panel], a 120Hz Refresh Rate, not to mention [if I'm not wrong], the MBP has a higher screen brightness [idk if its 500 Nits or more].
With my XPS, I'm always worried about whether it has enough Battery or not.
When I'm in Office, the MacBook dudes carry around their MacBooks without a worry to meetings, round-tables/ discussion tables, cafes etc, as opposed to me, who has to make sure it has enough juice to last that small work chat over coffee with the co-worker/ senior etc.
Especially the older M1 chips because they are still pretty fast and you can pick up a MacBook with one for cheap if you look around.
which part of it surprised you?
@@Äpple-pie-5k I have and still do. It's not terrible but boot camp is better.

If only there was a big laptop company, that had developed a new standard for RAM modules, that are replaceable and on par with soldered memory, when it comes to speed.
@@ahaimes6320 ... and have an ebay-able 16GB board.
I'll never buy a laptop without a physical function keys.
We need a review of the new Asus G14. It looks premium and you can game on it.
It used to be mid-range but is now premium, the price at least in the UK, £2400, which is in line with the XPS 14. However, it does not have all the negatives of the latter.
Why is socketed RAM slower than soldered on? That makes -0- sense.
I'm baffled how you think that makes zero sense!
@@leebeeskee LOL, you nailed it, people comment as they think they are all electronic engineers hahahha ffs
Your brain is actually rotted by these companies about some of the points you mentioned:
You said the ram being sottered was good because better memory clock speeds, but when does that actually matter (outside of when it is acting as vram for graphics for mobile graphics such as Arc integrated graphics, aka not the model you reviewed, and even then, its not crucial enough to sacrifice upgradability!!) Having your ram sottered means dell locks you into your choice at the time of purchase, not letting you choose different configurations is a massive L, considering the existence of LPDDR being fast, and Dell has already developed LPCAMM2 before ditching ram modules and following apple's lead.
Thanks for sharing! Great video. I returned my new xps after 5 days because of the terrible keyboard and trackpad.
It's actually really funny how dell has a latitude 9440 and the new 9450 version of the xps 14 that is almost exactly the laptop what I and many other people wanted from the xps 14. It even has a physical function row and stuff. What a constant disappointment from Dell. Should've never expected anything from this.
I kind of hate touchscreen laptops.. way less comfortable than using a good trackpad and you always have a smudged up display.
Many people said that new ASUs rog zephwrus g16 very close to Mac so I think it’s greate to make video to check both models, what you think about it ?
He should really do a comparison of the g14 & g16 with the macbook pro 14 & 16.
Not with that Intel chip maybe the AMD variant
Another Way to think about it, which might seem like bs, but I hope not:
How much money is your time worth?
However for more complicated things, pulling a bunch of files together to do some bigger project, using one of those computers can be like building a Lego house if your fingers are made out of those tube noodles .. you know the ones that are like that 1/2 in. Ridiculously challenging to get anything done. Noodle hands.
You really have changed max I remember you used to talk trash to other companies to the point that it was irritating and now some actual good points mixed in with the insults I am starting to enjoy your channel once more😌
Windows default config is overloaded with heavy security and some compatibility features, compared to macOS and Linux. That makes it noticeably heavier in use, especially on ultrabooks.
yeah sure hahah, intel fanboy over here
Try AMD laptop and you'll notice these issues too.
Could we possibly see a Comparison between XPS 13 Lunar Lake vs Meteor Lake XPS 13, big ask but also a XPS 14?
Got a decked out 14 for $1700. Great machine at that price
I think the Huawei Matebook X Pro can compete with a MacBook (at least an Air).
Agreed. Can’t comprehend how Windows remains so bad even after decades of market dominance and abundant feedback.
@@sam-zf1hq It gets worse every update, now they're adding ads in the start menu etc. The search is useless today, it's just garbage. Their machines come without office or other useful software but luckily they come with Candy Crush lmao. Ye no thanks.
All of Microsoft developer software is bloated and not intuitive. All they care about is Microsoft Office.
@@raybod1775 Ye their software is awful but it runs awful as well,, even on the pcmasterrace gaming machines. it's pathetic how a M1 macbook air with 16gigs is faster in everything BUT rendering.
Don't forget that, they will split into 2 parts soon, x86 and ARM, so even they will lower their own market share. (If you check it from developer view, so when you try to decide which platform you choose for your app/game)
The windows hello is nice but i mostly use my laptop with an external monitor. It’s an unused feature
Macbook is better in almost every department, but still has few major flaws - window management UI is pretty terrible compared to Windows, plus, Macs are getting much slower after few cycles of sleep.
Love the wallpaper. Does anyone know the name of it?
Was gunna buy until I heard about the keyboard dilemma, I do IT so it’s a no go for me now
Yeah, I'm done with Dell for awhile. That bar at the top was a bad idea.
Oversized key caps with no spacing between them? No physical escape key? Terrible choices for the keyboard, I wouldn’t even give that machine 5 seconds to try it out. It’s been repeatedly demonstrated that such key caps increase typing errors and are unpopular with users.
Can you compare Dell XPS 14 with Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i
Top bezel on the Dell is about as big as the MB Airs, yet they fit their camera in there while the MacBook needs that additional huge notch 🤦 Still prefer the MacBook for its performance and macOS 😉

I really do hate it that most notebooks come with Intel chips, they basically suck. Why not AMD? Seriously, AMD chips are by far better than any of the hot trash that Intel's been putting out lately.
True!
I assume that in the near future the prices of these new XPSes will be heavily dropped...
Is this a commercial?

When I read "as an engineer," I knew a dumb statement would follow.
You must have no technical training then. It is obvious that the notch on Mac is not a technical necessity

This piece of trash is more expensive than M3 pro MacBook in my country. I won’t even consider it unless it is 40 - 60% cheaper 😂.
