- In this video I show you how I turn an average living room into a cinematic shot. I go over techniques such as a cove light (what's that?!), day for night, motivating light and break it all down for you.

The way you lit the whole room by breaking down all the essentials to light this living room scene , its amazing
🙏
Thanks a lot for this GREAT tutorial! Veeery helpful!
That person who gave a thumbs down may be has some eye problem. Fantastic content ! I like when tutors show the full setup that includes the full studio/room, coz most of the tutorial on RUclips doesn't show the entire setup, they always show just the position of the light. Once again thanks man. :)
Awesome, just what I needed for my school project.
Another great video. Thanks Tyler!
Thanks so much Josh! Appreciate you dropping by 🙏
That final shot looks soooo good. I haven’t tried a cove yet, but I’m curious to do it. I reckon it might be difficult to gauge how bright the second and third key light should be. But I think you hit it right on the head here. Thanks for the detailed explanation and then the quick step by step demo at the end! Super helpful. =) =) =)
Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Great work Tyler! Haze is the unspoken secret of filmmaking
Haze gives life!! Thanks for dropping by!
Great video, it's interesting because the image looked pretty good and then when the haze was added it looked great. I've heard from other sources that haze machines really are a secret sauce.
Love it. Cove lighting is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Honestly, some of the most practical knowledge I've been seeing on youtube in such a delightful presentation. Always look forward to each thing new video you put out. This kind of info is invaluable to a new-ish filmmaker like me. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! That means a lot. I appreciate the support!
So helpful! Thank you so much!
really good video. that cove lighting is the best. also, no one else on youtube explained that you should expose first for that back window, then get your lights to match up to that level. When i tried setting up prior to knowing that I could never really match because I was really starting with a different practical and then couldn't match it to my studio light to get a soft look.
Great video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Excellent tutorial man! I’m actually looking for some new ways to light my tutorials and this just gave me tons of ideas!
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching!
Nice idea. Great work!!!
Thank you!
Loved this video!!!
Killing the lighting game Ty!!!
Thanks brother!! 🙏🙏
Thanks Tyler! Great video as always!
Thanks so much Daniel! I appreciate the support!
Brilliant!
Thanks!
Excellent info, thank you!
🙏🙏🙏 thanks for watching!
Helpful video - solid lines of reasoning - terrific results!!! The only downside.. the RUclips compression is frikkin traffic.
suuuuuper cooooool!!!!! love your explainer coach setup!!!!! thaaank you!!!
🙏🙏🙏
One day the algorithm will surrender, bro. Keep it up! You got this! I wish I found your channel earlier than this, but hey, better late than never!
You could have light the black wall with blue moon light and a CUCOLORIS as well to ad a little bit more depth
This was the second video of yours I've watched. I really liked the overall setup breakdown and the 1 at a time additive steps of lighting to show how everything worked. Still I bet this video took over an hour to setup and then even more to do the talking head and edit. Great work. Thanks for making this.
Thanks Nathan! I appreciate it!
Dude, you deserve so many more subs! Please keep doing these lighting setups. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing
Wow that’s so kind of you to say that! I’ve got more planned!
Looking forward to them @@TylerEdwards ! Learning alot!
Another channel that is going to get FOOKING BIGGG!!! AMAZING VIDEO MAN!!!
Haha maybe one day! Thanks so much!
Looks great!
Thank you!
This was a really good video. Thank you for sharing! Keep up the good work and wish you a happy 2021!
Thanks so much!! And hope you have a great 2021 as well!
So good Tyler! Great tips in this one. I need to try out cove lighting on a project!
Thanks bro!! Definitely do it and I’ll be stoked to see the results!!
great job with this video Tyler. I learned a lot here!! 😀
Thanks William!
Great job dude. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words!

Had come back forgot to hit the like button.
You just made my day!
Excellent video, man
Thanks Ben, I appreciate it!
Busting out the cove light!
amazing
Thanks!
Nice one!
Thanks!
Great video
Thanks!
👏👏👏
Great video, Tyler. I never get sick of Cove lighting techniques on YT, as there's always so many variances. I actually REALLY like your lowkey at 4:04. Also, do you find that having your muslin properly laid out, with limited folds proves insignificant? The shot at 3:13 shows creases and folds with shadow, but the picture you rendered on your wife has really lovely highlight rolloff, so wondering if its inconsequential.
Ngl, I feel like the shadows on the face earlier were closer to Deakin. Great work though.
Yup! All to taste but wanted to demonstrate wrapping that light all the way around 👍
This was awesome dude, I've been playing with the cove light recently too. Can you do one of these on lighting for darkness? I do a lot of horror stuff and always have issues running into fixed pattern noise on my blackmagic pocket 4K. I'm just not sure the best amount of light to use/camera settings to get the cleanest image where shadows actually fall into darkness (as opposed to the blue-ish darkness look).
Thanks so much! That’s a great idea, I’ll add it to the list!
@@TylerEdwards thanks man! I appreciate it
I like the concept of cove lighting and book lighting, but light spill always seems to be an issue with it bouncing everywhere. Without a bunch of grip gear, flags, etc. it seems like more trouble it’s worth. Maybe I’m missing something. Do you find that spill an issue when using these setups?
Yes spill has to be addressed if you want it controlled but if you are trying to keep light focused in one area, cove lighting wouldn’t be the most idea. Honestly a large softbox with a grid would be more ideal in many cases.
@@TylerEdwards thanks! I’m quickly realizing that. I’m still learning how to block and shape light better. I really dig the lighting breakdowns. Thanks!
can you break down the lighting on your other video ' part 2 before upgrading'
What would you recommend for a room that is very dark? I’m having such a hard time with finding good lighting for my videos. Help!!
What camera was used ?
What's your opinion on cove lighting? I mean -- do you think it's better than traditional diffusion such as a softbox? What are the pros and cons?
Haze always goes behind your subject not between the subject and the camera correct?
Great video even tho the " standard living room " was pretty cinematic before hand 😂
Lol what exactly makes a room cinematic? Haven’t heard that one before 😂
Do you have a video on how to put flags to avoid spilling light to the background ??
Not at the moment but it is in the plan!
Great video, my only question how much haze did you pump into the room that caused your wife to freak out? Haha
Thanks! Ya umm pretty much as soon as I turned it on 😂
You said CiNemATiC??!!!!!!!!
That’s what all the cool kids say right?
be careful with work lights. the wrong kind can get very hot and set your drape on fire.
Have you ever used HMIs or tungsten fixtures before? Lol
