The best thing about Queen is they are their own genre. You can't really put them under 1 category. They're so unique and so amazingly talented. I have a playlist on RUclips of all their albums and I just love it. I put it on shuffle and listen to everything. One of their deeper tracks from the album "The Game" is Dragon Attack, and it has the most bad ass bass line EVER. You should definitely check it out.

In 1977, at 16 years old, I went to my first rock concert. It was Queen! Our floor seats were 4th row, center. At the end of the concert, Freddie threw a couple of armfuls of carnation flowers out to the audience. I still have mine!! ❣

@user-ly6qe3ot6i saw them in January and December of '77'. January was in Madison WI for the Day at the Races tour. Cheap Trick was the opener. They were rocking the place like mad city likes to. They were starting their 3rd encore when they had the power cut off. The house lights came up and Rick Nielsen said "well I guess we're done. " Queen came out and started with 'Tie Your Mother Down'. Phenomenal 1st song with Freddy doing his thing and Brian May blazing the lead and slide on the red special. Plus the pyrotechnics and quad speakers. And it amazingly got better and better. Best two band concert in my experience.
Same thing in December in Chicago. The News of the World tour. No opening act. Two plus hours of Queen.
Drove through a blizzard both times. Glad I did.
Those were the days of our lives.

The greatest live performance of all time is Queen Live Aid. Mercury had the entire stadium along with everyone watching the live broadcast wrapped around his fingers.
During that performance, Freddie was sick from AIDS, but he put it aside, and gained strength from the audience. He was an incredibly amazing talent.
The slight problem with that statement, assuming it's from the movie, is that he tested positive in 1985, and he didn't. He DID find out around 1987 that he had HIV, but it's said that he had symptoms around 1982. However, it's impressive that he had a throat infection and gave one hell of a show at Live Aid against his doctor's orders 🤣
Yes! watch the Live Aid performance. And watch the documentaries about it. You don't need to react and post it, but you need to watch it. Much love, brother.

Live at Wembly, is the best.
Freddie expressed himself and who he was 1000%. No filter, no apologies, no toning it down or "reading the room". No mask, no fancy hair, no fussy clothes. Nothing between him and the audience. Strutting out with his arms thrown wide and his whole chest and body exposed and flung open on display. Incredible really. He was like lightning in a bottle. Thanks for the awesome reaction!
To think that the guitarist sublime, Brian May, is also a fully credentialed Ph.D. astrophysicist blows my mind. Don't know much about his scholarly work, but his guitar work hits the heavens ever time.
He left his studies in 1974 as Queen began to have musical success and only completed his PhD in 2007 aged 60, showing that you’re never too old.

May's role was critical as his work calculated the path of the spacecraft needed to accomplish that intercept.

The man is incredibly brilliant - as a musician, composer, lyricist, Astrophysicist AND a renowned expert at Stereoscopic 3D photography and imaging. It’s truly unfair that he got such a wide-ranging plethora of talents - I mean “Damn, Brian - leave some talent for the rest of us, why don’t ya!”
Roger Taylor left off being a dentist to play with Queen, and John Deacon is an electrical engineer. I remember reading once the question- are they the smartest band in the world?

Freddie wrote this song as a tribute to Aretha Franklin. He was a crazy fan of hers. If you listen to the studio version of this, you can really hear the gospel influence. There are just not enough superlatives to describe Freddie's voice.

They would also have a great way of opening the stage for the whole audience to be not just be spectators, but performers as well! You would leave the arena knowing that the you were part of a once in a lifetime event!!

In the early eighties Queen were to play at a football stadium in the uk ( football stadiums for concerts were still quite new then ) and Freddie was sound checking the day before. We came out of houses and vehicles just stopped where they were to listen. Who can stop a whole city? RIP freddie.

I’m not the type to cry when a celebrity or musician dies, but I *cried* when Freddy died. He was one of a kind.
Same, I loved him and Queen so much when I was a kid that my parents didn’t tell me he died until years after the fact, and I was devastated. I never credited for the death of someone I never met as hard as I cried over Freddie’s death.
Not only one of the best voices in Rock history but the ultimate showman nobody has done it better.

One of the best understated Freddie vocal performances, and Roger on backup vocals kills it at the end. Those cups aren't filled with beer - they're water with lemon and honey to help with Freddie's vocal chords.
Yes, the honey and lemon thing is very common for singers. It helps the throat, soothes and helps with the vocal chords.

Queen was such an amazing TIGHT band, they were so tuned in to one another, one of the greatest live bands of all time, and Freddie? THE BEST frontman ever.
@2:50 Most people who are fans of Queen (as I am) don't realize that the lead guitarist, Brian May, happens to have a PhD in Astrophysics. He was Knighted last March 2023 by King Charles and today is Sir Brian May. He co-authored 2 books with fellow Astrophysicist Sir Patrick Moore and was the Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University until 2013.
I spent my 24th birthday at this concert in Montreal, November 1981. Road trip almost 5000 miles return. No one had the audience like Freddy did! And I was right there, 8th row-center! My best concert memory, to be sure!!

One of my greatest regrets is not making this concert. A car full of kids was going up to Montreal from Toronto and offered me a seat. I, for the life of me, don't remember why I turned it down. I was 20 at the time.
The ‘this guy’ with the long hair - Sir (Dr.) Brian May.. still performing, along with Roger Taylor on drums, altho the long hair is grey these days!! Queen was, and still is, an amazing band; if not the best.. one of the best live bands to ever perform for us! Thank-you for your thoughtful reaction. And actually, if you have time, take a listen to some of the band’s current performances with the great Adam Lambert as their frontman.
The guitar Brian plays, the "Red Special" was built in his father's garage from assorted odds and ends around the home and kitchen
A lot of musicians are walking around with much shorter hair, balding top front or all shaven. Then there’s Brian. Sure it’s grayer but it’s long and full, and flowing. Good genes in the May family, I suspect. You all keep rocking - no matter how your hair or head looks today.

I love this song both live and studio for different reasons The layering and harmonies on the studio version cannot be recreated live and live has energy and dynamics that you don't see in the studio.. Thank you for your reaction.
You were absolutely correct, they were the Kings of Stadium or Anthem Rock. John Deacon retired after Freddie's death. He played the tribute concert for Freddie, they finished an album and he went into the studio to record a tribute song to Freddie. Brian May had written the song and sent it to Roger who put it in a drawer and forgot about it for quite some time. Eventually they met and recorded it and then John was done. He has not had contact with the other guys. He did handle their finances for awhile after retirement but the last time Brian and Roger were asked about him they said that they hadn't had any contact in many years. I find that quite sad but it is his life to lead. Roger, the drummer, was an amazing vocalist in his own right and he frequently took over lead vocals from Freddie when Freddie's voice was fried from singing. During Live Aid, most of the high notes are Roger. Roger and John together were a percussion force to be reckoned with. They were like metronomes. And singing so much of the lyrics while maintaining the beat/rhythm is not an easy feat. Brian has a sound all his own. When he starts to play, you instantly know it is Brian May. He still plays his "Red Special" which is the guitar that he and his father built in their garage. He has a PhD in Astrophysics and his father was rather critical of his spending his life playing in a rock band when he had so much to give the world in his chosen field. His father didn't hear him perform for many, many years and then finally came to one of their concerts and when they were done and came off stage, Brian's father said words to the effect, "Now I see why you do it.: Interesting facts, they are the only rock band where each member wrote a number one song. They were the first band to start playing in stadium's while on their tour of South America, they played in outdoor soccer venues which held huge numbers of people. Freddie once talked about how amazing it was to stand on a stage and have everyone in the audience singing the lyrics back to you. They didn't speak English but they knew the words to the song. When they were first starting out, they didn't have a lot of money but they had finally had an album with hits on it and John and his wife wanted to purchase a house. They went to the management team to ask for a loan to buy the house and management turned John down. The entire band made the decision to drop the team. That is how they ended up with their lawyer being their manager. John and his childhood sweetheart are still married today and live in that same house. They have five children. I like to think that sometimes John goes down in the basement and picks up the bass and really lets go. Brian, Roger and Adam Lambert are on tour right now and I will be seeing them on November 5th in Denver. I have seen them before and while I wish Freddie and John were still here, Brian and Roger are great with Adam. As for what songs you should do, you can pretty much close your eyes on a list of their songs and stab one and it will be wonderful. No rock group survives a lot of years without being able to change up their music and try and keep things fresh. Queen could do rock, ballads, etcetera. Maybe not country and western, though, LOL!!

I was fortunate enough to see Queen at all four tours where they played The Forum in Los Angeles (Inglewood.) Believe me when I say, Freddie could make that arena, that sat 18,000 for concert events, feel like your living room. That’s the kind of stage presence he had. The band was beyond tight. One day while working Pirates at Disneyland, I was in the Load position, and lead guitarist Brian May came up my line with one of his kids (he’s ridiculously tall and I’m 5’2”), and when I asked, “how many in your group?” he smiled and said, “one and a half.” I smiled and laughed and said, “I could come with you guys and make you two!” and made him giggle! Totally made my day, all the while thinking, AHMAHGAHDTHATSBRIANFREAKINGMAY!

Queen is my number one. They have such variety in their music. The more you listen the more impressed you'll be.
Freddie was like no other. Same with Brian May on guitar (does look like he should have Excaliber), John Deacon some of the best bass riffs in history....Roger Taylor..the drums, growing up in a family of drummers kicks ars...however his voice!!! Those high notes he can hit are unheard of!!! I was blessed to grow up watching them, buying their 45's, lp's, etc.
Freddy always owned the stage whenever he performed. The rest of the band are very talented and knew how to anticipate his every move.
When Freddie took the stage he had people in the palm of his hand. No frontman has ever had more confidence than Freddie. I saw this concert the following summer same stage same superman tank top. Saint Paul Minnesota. Summer of 82.
I received a copy of News of the World when I was 6 yo in 1977. From the first moment I listened to that album, I was instantly a lifelong Queen fan. I went from "what is this" to "I will love this band for the rest of my life" in an instant. The first 2 songs on that album are We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, and my 6 yo brain just couldn't comprehend what I was listening to. Even now, when I listen to Queen, I get the same feeling of being in the presence of greatness.
Freddie has been gone for 30 years now, but his music continues to inspire and amaze each new generation, and that makes me incredibly happy.

News of the World was my first album too! I was 7 years old and it changed my life. My first concert was the Hot Space tour when I was 12. I'm so thankful I had a cool Mom. LOL!

Since I started watching reactors to music of my younger days this song has become one of my favorites. The realization that it’s live, not electronic magic, just insane talent, always hits hard. Glorious.
If you have not listened to White Queen live at Odeon 1974 it is a must. The instrumental section in the middle is absolutely spellbinding. Like others have said Live Aid is an absolutely terrific 20 minutes that gives a great breakdown of their hits.

Had the privilege to see queen in concert in Slane Ireland 🇮🇪 in 1986 what a voice what a band
Back in 1973 I met a gorgeous long-haired guy at a hip London market where I bumped into him a couple of times tending two different stalls. He told me how broke he was and working all the hours he could to pay off his 'mountain of debts'... He was in a band, but apparently they weren't making much money! He was sweet and friendly though a little shy at first... and when he burst out laughing at the little melodrama he'd created around his sad story, I noticed... a set of enormous white teeth... I didn't quite know what to make of him but he fascinated me...beautiful/ ugly, and so full of life. I always meant to go back and see him again but my life took another direction and I never saw him again.
A few years ago, I realised who that guy was...yes, it was none other than the now legendary Mr Mercury.
Do check out "You Take My Breath Away" - Live at Hyde Park, 1976; just long-haired Freddie (as I remember him) at the piano, shushing a rowdy evening crowd with wave of a slender finger and a spellbinding tale of obsessive love.

i personally find so special about this performance is that a couple of times he looks directly at the cameraman and it feels like he's looking at you . That makes this one of my very favourite live performances. Thanks for the awesome reaction

Thanks, Polo - your friend did not steer you wrongly... this entire concert was fantastic.. and not just the amazing Freddie - but EVERYONE... they were all fire...no back-up recordings, and no "autotune" - appreciate your reaction and hope to do more...(p.s. don't mock Brian's hair.. it just grew out of his head that way.... lol)

Queen was an amazing band. Incredible harmonies, phenomenal instrumentation, and a lead vocalist who was incredibly magnetic and took control of the stage. I was lucky enough to see them play live twice (not counting their Live Aid performance on LiveTV.)
I grew up listening to Queen thanks to my parents who played their albums every weekend while playing cards with friends. There will never be another Freddie. He was incredible. His voice, his writing ability. Queen. One of a kind. Brilliant.

Queen's studio version is great as well, but very different. Their studio versions were often very complex, with layers of vocals that sound amazing, but can't really be done live, so Queen would figure out some way to do an amazing live version.
Freddie Mercury is the best front man of all time. He could control the crowd with the movement of one finger. I saw Queen in 1982 and it was among the best shows I ever saw!
Queen has been my favorite band since 1977. Damn, that's a long time!
The studio recording of STL is one of the finest examples of studio production that you are ever likely to hear, and yet this live performance manages to top it. How that is even possible is a beautiful mystery.
I've watched Freddie's performance of These Are The Days Of Our Life many, many times and I still have to try not to cry at those final words... his final recorded utterance... "I Still Love You"
They’re my favorite band of all time!! Going to see them again in October with Adam Lambert! Fat Bottomed Girls is a great song - definitely better to watch the live version. The Show Must Go On is another fabulous song! Tie Your Mother Down is also great - again - check out the live version. Queen is the only band I know that sounds better live ❤

I suggest 'Save me ' from this same concert (Montreal, 1981) and ' In the lap of the gods' (not the Revisited version) , Live at the Rainbow, 1974. Both are amazing and Roger's backup vocals sound positively

The thing that made Freddy special was the fact that he was not only a magnificent artist and performer, he was also a musical genius.

Find me somebody today who can own that stage like Freddy Mercury, backed up by musicians like Queen, and I will fly wherever I need to go to see them live. I know of no band before or since that owned the live venue like they did.

I saw them live a few times, and they always brought it! They have a few songs that feature Roger Taylor on vocals, and he's an amazing vocalist as well. I'm in Love With My Car comes to mind.
The studio version of this emphasizes the call and response aspects of the song more than the live version, but it always reminded me of something that might have come from a black church from the South. Possibly my favorite Queen song!
It was a well known fact that Freddie loved Aretha Franklin. There are interviews that he did where he said he loved her phrasing and singing. It’s been said that this song was an homage to Franklin and her church background. So you are right on point about this sounding like something from church. 👏👏

When Aretha and George Michael collaborated on a duet “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me”, Freddie was somewhat envious because he didn’t have the opportunity to sing with Aretha. One of his band mates told the story that Freddie said George was OK but he (Freddie) would have done it better. His respect for Aretha was legendary. BTW if you haven’t seen the duet with Aretha and George, it’s worth a watch. Cheers.

Sooooo agree he DID OWN THE WORLD IN those twenty minutes! Just watched the movie with my parents who are 76 and 77 I did a video of their faces! Mom crying (not a normal thing for us to see) my dad just having survived a near death just 46 hours earlier… we’re hypnotized and singing!
