I'm actually a native English speaker, and an older Russian friend asked me about these a while ago, I didn't know! Of course I know what sounds right, and what should be said, but not the rules. Until today, Tenses knowledge to me were just past present and future, so you have been a great help to a native (present perfect) what a perfect present! Thanks!

@@blue_rangerYes, and no. It depends on who you ask. Your example is considered a future tense by most modern teachers, but to some linguists, it’s more like a present tense.
Basically, it boils down to what is considered a tense. In the strictest sense, word endings have to change. It doesn’t with the so-called future tense in English.
We can argue that the word “will” simply expresses one’s intention-one’s “will” to do something. This is actually how the word was first used. Grammatically speaking, it acts very much like the word “dare” in “I dare say . . . ”

    • @Kakaokletocka

Yes, for Russians it's a great problem to learn English tenses :D
For example, we don't have difference between "I study", "I am studying" and "I have been studying" :) but we can understand it.
And English Past Tenses drive us crazy :D

    You nailed this lesson Lucy.
it's also worth noting that we choose the present perfect simple rather than the continuous to emphasize that something isn't short term:
-simple: I've worked her most of my life. (long term)
-continuous: I've been working here for just a few days. (short term).
we can also choose the continuous to stress that something is repeated:
-continuous: I've been using the swimming pool since we moved into this neighborhood. (repeated)
-simple: I've used the swimming pool since we moved into this neighborhood. (one or two occasions)

I think there is another huge difference. I will take the example with the therapist. "She has been seeing a therapist. " means that she has seen him more than once whereas "she has seen a therapist." can mean that she has seen him him once.

    • @garvett6660
      @garvett6660 2 года назад

I should disagree. The Present Perfect Continuous form of this sentence would mean that she had been seeing a therapist until the moment this sentence was uttered. It is akin to such a situation:
      - Hey Lucy, where have you been? I’ve been looking for you everywhere!
      - Oh I’m sorry, I have been helping my mum with some housework.

There is a way to make things perfectly clear:
She has seen a therapist once.
She has seen a therapist many times.
Just by adding "once" or "many times".
Similarly all the uncertainties and trouble in English can be eliminated by just adding a few words in the sentences. No more changing of the root words because of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, singular vs plural, tenses, gender, individuals vs group, etc.

I’ve been living in England for 3 years vs I’ve lived in English for 3 years - the meanings can be subtly different. The former emphasises a continuous unbroken duration while the latter does not have this association. If you say I’ve lived in England for 3 years, it could mean you have accumulated enough years of living in England. It doesn’t mean the process of accumulation is unbroken. You could live in England for a year and then lived elsewhere and then came back to England and lived there for 2 years so now you have lived in England for 3 years.

Usually, when using the present perfect continuous there's an emotion involved like suprise, anger, etc
I've been living here for ten years an I have never met such a nice person. (Here the speaker is surprised)
I've been waiting for two hours! (The speaker here is angry and annoyed)
Another reason why we used the present perfect progressive in the second example is because it's uncommon to use the present perfect with the word "hour"
That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Thanks a lot for the lesson!! That was very helpful. I am still confused about one thing :)
When you said that we can use PPC to talk about unfinished actions and PP for finished ones. I am wondering if it's a finished action, why not use the simple past instead? Hope that you can answer my question as soon as possible. I am a novice English teacher. Thanks a lot again.

We use Past Simple for finished actions when we know when they happened or when it's important, or when we don't want to emphasize the result of those actions on the present.
      E. g., "I've already watched the film." - it's a result by the moment of speaking. "I watched the film yesterday" - we just give information about the past.
We could even say something like "I finished watching the film 10 minutes ago" and it would still be PS because in this exact sentence I just want to give info about the past.

Your examples of when you can't use PPC with a number (He has been drinking seven cups of coffee this morning, etc.) aren't exactly nonsense, they just have a different meaning. Could be used if he's got 7 cups of coffee currently spread out on the table before him and he's been taking little sips from each cup throughout the entire morning.

,,how much or how many '' part is very helpful, your guide is probably only 1 from all YT guides who has this meaningful rule.
Thank you a lot for it.
