    fun fact that most people dont get, the reason for the helicopters flying over the crowed so low is because when you have 1.6 million people [which was actually just the number they stopped counting at] all jumping up and down and getting all worked up and breathing hard.. they actually suck all the oxygen out of the air, and the copters are used to circulate fresh air and oxygen into the crowed

    That energy is why I love metal. The vibe of a crowd of fans is unreal. My best concert experience was getting to be at arms length from a band in a little dive bar... it's like they're taming lightning in front of your eyes, but only barely in control. You feel the power coming from those amps in your bones.
    It can be a spiritual experience.

    • @markhilker9454
      @markhilker9454 Год назад +1

      Arms length in a little dive bar, you are right. I was very lucky as far as right place, right time. I've seen countless bands that are legends now at the Fillmore East. Place was a shoe box. I think the seating capacity was about 1300. It was basically an old style movie theatre with a balcony. Saw led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Jimi, Grateful dead (probably like 40 times) and tons of other notable groups. Wasn't a bad seat in the house and I figure most of my hearing loss now is from those days but man what a great time it was.

The Soviet people really let their hair down and had an amazing time at this show. James Hetfield (Metallica's frontman) has said in interviews that while he was on stage and playing during this show, he could not stop staring at the helicopters and was petrified that one was going to malfunction and crash into the crowd. Thankfully that didn't happen and this show was one for the history books.

    Other Metallica songs worth reacting to are "Master of Puppets", "One", and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium) --the Live from Seattle version. And my favorite, "No Leaf Clover" (the official music video from 1999 - they perform live with the San Francisco Symphony.)

    I just discovered your channel and loved your reaction to this historic performance that brought me to tears the first time I saw it. The year I was 17 (from the summer of 1973 to 1974), I was in several parts of what was then the Soviet Union for real. When I was in Leningrad, a guy chatted me up (in pretty decent English) and then tried to buy my Levi's jeans. Real American jeans were a highly profitable commodity on the Soviet underground market. Being pre-warned about the truly frightening consequences of engaging in this kind of activity, I declined as kindly as I could. As we continued to talk, he let me know that a building nearby housed a KGB detention and interrogation operation. But it was in a town called Sochi on the shore of the Black Sea where I spent some quality time with three local teenage music lovers. (There was "tall" Yuri, another Yuri and Petru.) The only way they'd heard music from bands like Led Zepplin, Deep Purple or the Rolling Stones was through passing around smuggled albums. We talked about and played music for hours late into the night. And the only way we could get away with this illegal behavior was to head to a secluded wooded area just outside of town where no one could overhear us. We spent one evening somewhat isolated on the end of a long dock that jutted into the Black Sea. I stupidly blurted out that they could visit me in America. We'd go see every live band in the area and listen to my small but growing album collection. They stared at me for a minute, then the tall Yuri said they would love to. But they knew they would never be allowed to leave. THEIR OWN COUNTRY. I've thought about them over the years and wondered how they fared in life. Even if they never left the country, were any (or all) of them a part of that 1.6 million people soaking in that degenerate western music? I hope so.

    I enjoy singing, but if it’s 50 people that I know personally, I’m nervous as hell. If it’s 100 people at a bar that I don’t know, I’m comfortable. I don’t figure I’ll ever see them again. I can’t imagine 1,6 million! That’s insane! James Hatfield is the lead singer.

    I think this was the first time Western bands were allowed in Russia. Metallica, in the beginning, received no air play. Their fame is largely due to touring and word of mouth and they EXPLODED!! The first time I ever heard them, I was a sophomore in high school and someone played them on their "boombox" in the quad. That was it ... everyone was a fan!!
