...my Grandfather, LeRoy Hamp, was an amazing Tenor...and my Grandmother, Elisabeth Hamp, played the organ so beautifully. They organized and did this performance in churches during the holidays...such a beautiful reminder of wonderful people, and a most excellent performance!!!!!!!!
While singing in a choir in my teens I practiced this song, so I could convince the conductor to give me a solo, I did learn it, but to really perform it, it takes years and perfect technique. Great singing
Every single word used in the Messiah oratorio is from the King James Bible. Written in English by G. F. Handel, it is one of the most wonderful pieces written in history.
I own this recording (audio only) and is by far the best representation of Handel's Messiah, and baroque music overall, I've ever heard. Davis is a master.
Handel's original tempo marking is "andante," and yet the tempo in this performance, which I would call "allegro moderato," seems ideal. It's hard to imagine it taken any slower. Bravo to Mr. Padmore, Mr. Davis, and the London Symphony!
I find this and other videos and recordings by Mark Padmore to be very pleasing and the tenor arias of Messiah lend themselves very well to Mr. Padmore's lyric voice.
Wonderful! Yesterday is the first time I became aware of Tenor Mark Padmore and it was in this recording. The tone, the timbre of his voice connect clearly as when hearing the pure tone of the finest instrument. Thank you!
I love how the music and lyrics combine to paint a picture in your head. "The crooked" is sung with movement, "straight" is a sustained note like drawing with sound.
Un réel plaisir d'écouter cet excellent ténor. J'écoutais ce 25 mai l'intégral avec Christie et Mark Padmore. Delicious moment... Thank for posting this video Philippe
bravissimo il tenore!! i read some comments talking about lacking of power!! what ridiculous comments! this is Handel, not Verdi!! Padmore's voice is rich, warm, perfect for Handel! beautiful and expressive!! complimenti!
All KIDDING ASIDE.... In 2013 I was deathly I'll and laid out in bed. My COMFORT was Praise and Worship Songs. One night while I was in dire pain, This came up on my TV. It lifted me up outta the PAIN and desperation. HOPE Sprung up. "You shall see your VALLEY EXALTED." I had never even paid attention to the lyrics!! This Popped up on my Screen. Even Now As I open up the HOLY BOOK: There it is ISAIAH 40:3-4,5b The voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Prepare ye the way of the LORD; Make Straight in the DESERT A Highway for our GOD. Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low The Crooked places shall be made straight And the Rough places Smooth. The GLORY OF THE LORD SHALL BE REVEALED AND ALL Flesh shall see it together. FOR THE MOUTH OF THE LORD HAS SPOKEN."
@ericnj28 It is tradition to perform oratorios and cantatas with the music, even if you do have it memorized. And I am positive that a tenor of Mr. Padmore's caliber has had this piece memorized for a number of years already.
I agree he is terrific. As an English person, I was addressing the person who was criticising his accent and diction, suggesting he sings with a standard southern British accent, neither over nor under enunciating the vowel sounds.
Truly exquisite! Is there any need to say more, other than to say if one heard angels joining in, then I would not be surprised. Such is the power of Handel's Messiah.
amazing this is .. sadly I can't share it with much of my fellow ages vriend :( ... sadly .. they don't know what they miss this is really the music !! .. amazing it is .. you can cry of just out of joy !
Love this. Listen to Kenneth McKellar sing it - he can get through every phrase without cutting off for a breath in the middle of a syllable. And it’s beautiful.
A beautiful performance by Mr. Padmore. Being a tenor soloist myself, I'm permitted to be a little critical. One of the most difficult passages from a breath control standpoint is from measure 34 through measure 41. A half note rest in the second beat of measure 34 permits a breath to be taken, sufficient to carry the phrase all the way to the first beat of measure 40, where it is customary to cut the quarter note to a half note in order to catch a breath to take the singer to the cutoff in measure 41. A very long phrase and very difficult to perform. Watching Mr, Padmores' performance, I am surprised to see him cut the second half note in measure 35 to catch a breath, and to shorten the dotted quarter note in measure 38 in order to take another breath. This then takes him to the first beat in measure 40 where he takes a breath as is customary, to finish the phrase.
Bravo, just the right amount of ornamentation. I agree that some tenors over ornament this piece. Has anyone ever heard Kenneth Mckellar do this? Great.
So this song was played as an example of aria in my class, we were all laughing at it way too much. For some reason the teacher thought it would be a great idea to put it in our end of unit test, with exam conditions. I have never seen more people trying to hold in a laugh in their whole life.
Every valley will be Exhalted! And that of the whole of creation, as the programme is reset after the devils virus has been removed. This is such a joyful and one of the most optimistic of Handel's Arias
amazing preformane :) ! just amazing all the times again ;) !!!! love this preformance also nice to hear a harpishord at the background gives it a nice touch
@Ledfloyd15 It's definitely a tenor solo - I have 3 different arrangements and it and "Comfort Ye" are both tenor solos. Now I have seen skilled baritones perform the solo if there are no strong tenors in a choir, or tenors that have trouble with the low end of the solo - remember that there is often little difference between second tenor and baritones.
Whos still listening in 2024 this Master Piece?

Yes indeed, “Every valley shall be exalted and every crooked way shall be made straight.” Amen.

Imagine the type of musical genius it took to compose this! To hear all of this in your head and put it to paper.
God inspired.
That is absolutely a MOST amazing feat.
And they say Haendel composed this masterpiece in just three weeks!!!

Wisdom of countless centuries, Isaiah.
This kind of exalted praise never outdates, it just continues to expand throughout the universe!
Totally agree, see you there!
Are you replying to your own comment?
To have a voice like that, to be able to sing that music . . . incredible.
Just work ....
I used to mishear the lyrics. I heard "Everybody shall be excited". Worked for me too :-D
Same thing here!
I imagine they would!
😂 My high school friend thought it was "go through straight" until she heard me at the rehearsals before the provincials
I thought it was said " the klu klux klan, the Klu klux klan, and the rock laid an egg "
Lool
This is my Favorite Messiah solo!!!!! Plus Mark Padmore does a wonderful job signing it!!! My ears jump for joy! Handel got it right!!
This man sings like he knows The Lord ✝. Stunning.

...my Grandfather, LeRoy Hamp, was an amazing Tenor...and my Grandmother, Elisabeth Hamp, played the organ so beautifully. They organized and did this performance in churches during the holidays...such a beautiful reminder of wonderful people, and a most excellent performance!!!!!!!!
This is the song that inspired me to become a vocalist.
One of the best and most difficult vocal performances this world has ever seen.
While singing in a choir in my teens I practiced this song, so I could convince the conductor to give me a solo, I did learn it, but to really perform it, it takes years and perfect technique. Great singing
Glory to God! I just want to testify of all the things in my life Jesus the Messiah has straightened out ! God keeps His promises!

His ways are higher than our ways, as the heavens are above the earth.Glory be to God.

Hear! Hear!
He was both God and man.
Who’s still listening in 2023?? ❤❤
Every single word used in the Messiah oratorio is from the King James Bible. Written in English by G. F. Handel, it is one of the most wonderful pieces written in history.
The libretto was compiled by Charles Jennens, and Handel put it to music.
Great tenor lovely oratorio voice very declamatory like a John the Baptist lovely ornaments too
Really the best preformance of youtube here .. the tempo just PERFECT !
LOVE THIS ONE ALL TIMES OVER AND OVER AGAIN !
I own this recording (audio only) and is by far the best representation of Handel's Messiah, and baroque music overall, I've ever heard. Davis is a master.
This is by far my favorite rendition of Every Valley…well done 👏
Handel's original tempo marking is "andante," and yet the tempo in this performance, which I would call "allegro moderato," seems ideal. It's hard to imagine it taken any slower. Bravo to Mr. Padmore, Mr. Davis, and the London Symphony!
This is indeed awesome. Very powerful tenor voice. Very well performed. Bravo.
I still need God's job on my poor valley!
Same!
Welcome to the fellowship .
That singer has outstanding breath control!
Wow! What a tenor!
Great tenor. Love they way he so clearly articulates each word.
Ev'ry soul shall be exhalted...and mine too, for many years...better...forever!
Ev'ry valley shall be exalted, and ev'ry mountain and hill made low; the
Crooked straight and the rough places plain. (Isaiah 40:4)
I find this and other videos and recordings by Mark Padmore to be very pleasing and the tenor arias of Messiah lend themselves very well to Mr. Padmore's lyric voice.

GOD BLESS OUR CHILDREN! Happy new life!
Colin Davis's voice was a fresh change of beauty and vocal control executed by a classical male vocalist.
Mr. Padmore is doing a great job here! His voice is perfectly suited for Handel's oratorios, which requires a warm voice rather than a powerful one.
M e s s i a h - big HOPE for PEOPLE and NATIONS!!!
A Force of Nature! Magnificent! ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE!Absolutely pleasant!
A delight to my soul,my heart and my ears!!!!!!!
Ein sehr verspieltes Stück von einem sehr verspielten Kümstler

magnificent pure voice
He handles so beautifully
I love this music and i can do anything to know it.
Beautiful Music!!
Great Handel
omg... blown away by this tenor...
+Justice Olsson He's a baritone, I think.
+The Flatulent Mexican Lawyer no way he's a baritone... Actually his voice is lighter than a dramatic tenor.
bravissimo il tenore!! i read some comments talking about lacking of power!! what ridiculous comments! this is Handel, not Verdi!! Padmore's voice is rich, warm, perfect for Handel! beautiful and expressive!! complimenti!
What a fabulous performance! I suppose we should expact that from the LSO.
The absolute very best and it is so delightful to have these images of Sir Colin.
Beautiful.
Adorabe Sir Collin Davis
gorgeously sung
my favorite aria from Messiah( in addition to Rejoice Greatly)

Прекрасная музыка, прекрасный оркестр, прекрасный исполнитель!
Love this. Listen to Kenneth McKellar sing it - he can get through every phrase without cutting off for a breath in the middle of a syllable. And it’s beautiful.
also because this is likely the beginning of the entirety of Handel's Messiah which is close to 3 hours long so its good to have notes
Look at maestro's smile!

Love hearing the crooked places crooked and the rough places plain
I'm listening in 2022
I find it funny that people have a tough time understanding rap music but this is a whole different level, how the hell do y'all understand this?!
I really like this really good, and just as handle would've wanted it sing and performed
Anyone else came here after hearing this song in the Mister Rogers documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor?
I was wondering where I'd recently heard this song.
Now, but I'm sure Mr Rogers would be delighted . To say nothing of Mr. Handel
1st word should be No.
Love it at all times!! Handel was truly inspired!
Indeed. I seem to remember learning that he wrote it in about 3 weeks.
Beautiful Solo. Exemplary done
