- Stripy Cakes are SO HOT RIGHT NOW! But do you know what else is hot? CHRISTMAS Y'ALL! So I've combined the two in the best way I know how and I'm giving you an in-depth tutorial on how to master the stripy cake as well as a cool idea for a cake for the Holidays! Merry Christmas everyone!
You will need...
4-6 layers of your favourite sponge, filled, crumb coated and chillled
Buttercream (here's my recipe. Use 2-3 times... )
A special comb scraper like the one in the video (it probably has a name, but I have no clue what it is! LOL)
Red food colour paste
Lots of kitchen towel
Piping bag
Regular straight cake scraper
Turntable
Things to decorate the top (I used melted white chocolate, gold lustre dust + vodka, various meringues, candy canes, festive chocolates, but you can use whatever you like!)

You can also mix - powdered sugar, gold powder and vodka , and save some time! Don’t need to paint.

Can I use italian buttercream for this?
I wouldn't see why not! I have actually just made a video for rainbow stripes on a ganache cake using swiss meringue buttercream, and I'm sure Italian would work just as well. The technique would be the same for any kind of icing/buttercream :)

Is it just me, or did she pull a different cake out of the fridge for the decorating part? The white stripes seemed a lot wider at that point. Wouldn't surprise me, since I'm sure they're going to be making these to sell and have more than one. C:

Nope, because there was a bit at the back which was a bit uneven and thin on the red bits, and it was the same when it came out of the fridge. Before the fridge, we saw it mainly from the "front".
I don't even bake. I just love the professional and warm vibe of this channel. It got the perfect aesthetic to it, not too over the top, just the right amount.

You think that was a lot of gold painting? I did my cousin's wedding cake last year. It was a 3 tier monster with buttercream ruffles and I had to paint all their edges gold! 😨 Was fun though 😁

Sounds like a lot of fun and a lot of patience too :) I do love to decorate cakes with gold but it can be very time consuming :D

This is so well explained and demonstrated. I've also seen the stripes where the cake is chilled between the combing and adding the second color. Is there a big difference? What's your opinion on that? Do you like it better without the chill ir do you just find it unnecessary? Just wondering.
I always prefer to chill my cake between using the comb and applying the stripes colors. I find that working with a chilled cake makes smoothing the stripes a lot easier and the buttercream does not mix with the previous icing. I just made a video about rainbow stripes on a ganache cake if you want to check it out on my channel :)

You should do what we do here in the states. We have a small town where we live that has Christmas in July!!! The whole town puts out their Christmas lights and decorations on the street lamps and buildings and all the businesses decorate for Christmas. It's wonderful!! They even have a festival.

What gold lustre did you use please Jemma? I've struggled to find one as good as Rolkem since we can't use it anymore as it's not edible 😩
Sharon Bradley....did you find a top notch gold lustre in the end? I’m searching at the moment and it’s a right struggle. Bakell are American based and Roxy & Rich don’t seem to be wide spread and wouldn’t know what to choose anyway. The “lustre” I bought the other day from Hobbycraft is on par with muddy sand from the beach. I don’t know why the brand of lustre used in this video wasn’t listed 😩

I've seen another technique where you spread a clean layer of white, then simply spread the 2nd color icing on top of the first, then use the castle bench scraper to "scrape" through to the first color. This leaves a grooved texture instead of a flat one, but perhaps might be easier than trying to carefully pipe the red? I dunno - just an idea for those with shaky hands..

The cake is put on a round disposable cake board before decorating it on the turntable, so the whole thing lifts off as one. 😀
