That last line by Stan, "Sue me!", was intended as a direct message to the Church of Scientology. They are notoriously litigious and that last part was basically Matt and Trey saying "come get us, motherf***ers".
I heard now that the church of Scientology no longer sues people after the Debbie Cook debacle. To pursue the lawsuit, they had to expose much of their inner workings. They settled the case quickly when they realized that the PR was going to be bad. Debbie Cook was the lady who did the Scientology commercials. She then got to work closely with David Miscavige. In short time she was physically removed from her office by people who climbed through the window that were sent to get her by Miscavige. Miscavige had the gall to call her office phone to ensure she was there. He asked her, "are they there yet?" and then hung up.
At first I seen in interview they wanted to ask Tom to come out of closet and there lawyers said no u can't then they thought let's put him in a closet then say it .. n CC lawyers agreed to episode
yes lmao
:/
Then the credits in the end naming everyone John or Jane Smith
When it says "This is what Scientologists actually believe" - yep. This is what Scientologists actually believe.
This is why they are so retarded
Reality of perception is sometimes stranger than fiction.
Though it’s interesting to know that this knowledge was previously restricted to members of Operating-Thetan level three, roughly $100,000-$200,000 dollars worth of investment. Good strategy, hiding the absolutely ridiculous behind so much investment that people are more willing to believe than to examine critically. Members who are told this story have also been told, as is policy, that people of lower OT levels or the unaffiliated will catch pneumonia and die within a month if they hear the story too early. Great way to keep family members from calling bullshit.
They had a former executive of the church serve as an advisor on the episode who was all in on helping them expose scientology
That's more of a comment to dash:
If you only listen to it yes,
But the inventor was a science fiction writer so the spaceships were jumbo planes.
Also like someone already commented many members didn't know about the truth as to know about ZANU you needed to have given 250k for stage 3 and they scared members from telling each other by saying if you learn the truth before you're ready you die by a random disease.
(They also had a bad medicinal approach by not taking prescription medication and if you did you force your body to sweat it out, actual way how the voice actor of chef died as he was a member too)
The Xenu story depicted in the episode is actual, real Scientology lore, but they only reveal that to you once you reach OT Level 3 which takes many years and an estimated hundreds of thousands of dollars later of auditing and "courses" to reach such a level. Most Scientologists wouldn't know what you're talking about when you bring up the whole Xenu thing and the ones who know exactly what you're talking about are conditioned to pretend they have no idea what you're talking about. The OT Level 3/Xenu story leaked on the Internet many years ago so it's authentic as far as what the upper echelons of them believe, and Scientology even tried using the court system to remove that content under the premise that they were protected trade/church secrets. South Park producing this episode was a big milestone at the time as far as further entrenching the lunacy of Scientology in mainstream discourse.
Yeah, I saw a former Scientologist reacting to the episode and he pointed out how several things in the episode aren't things someone recently introduced would be told about, but credits South Park with helping show those beliefs to the wider public.
It's the actual teachings, the church tried to get it taken down because of copyright. But they'd have to prove that's what the actual story is
The is the funniest tving about it. It's so far out that even with a huge in-your-face sign saying that it's what they actually believe, you don't really trust it because it sounds so crazy.
@@punklover99 I think the bigger issue is, I don't see how you can copyright a belief system, so the only way they could have copyright I'd think would be to admit it's a scam.
@@punklover99 not to mention that for the copyright protection, they would have to undo tax-exempt church status because it would be a means of profit.
Matt and Trey were told that they couldn’t outright say Tom Cruise is gay due to his history of litigation. So they put him in an actual, literal closet🤣
"Imma SUE you"
But Tom, ur literally packing fudge in a fudge factory
"Hey, look, Tom Cruise has Sea Man on his back!"
Then the fudgepacker episode was such a classic
He got mad to he tried to sue South Park
But they're still clearly calling him gay, any juror with half a brain would see that so he could still sue.
I watched a video of a former scientologist breaking this episode down. It was awesome. Also the documentary "Going Clear" is incredible. The leader of the church is really an evil man. I don't use that word lightly either. Also if you look at the end credits every name says Jane or John Doe. Because Trey and Matt didn't want their staff to be sued. Kinda sweet of them lol
There was also a RUclips video where these guys infiltrated the church of scientology and prove they were actually brainwashing people
Yeah bro , I have recently watched that episode as well. It was awesome.
Dang that was nice of them. Cause scientologists definitely love to sue.
@@guitarwins1896 they can't sue anymore.
Oh wow I didn't know about the Jane/John Doe bit! This was nice of Trey & Matt to do that 🤗. I personally wouldn't have even thought about doing that, but I guess Trey & Matt must have talked it over with the staff to do that because the crazy Xenu people were too lawsuit happy lol 😂!
The running gag of R.Kelly singing “AND I PULL OUT MY GUN!” gets me every time. lmao
I still sing that to myself sometimes. 😂
Same 😅😅😂 specially the tone switch during the line 🤣🤣
Tom Cruise is stuck in the closet
Allegations/sensitivity aside and no matter how many times I see it, I laugh every time I hear the south park R. Kelly yell "So I pull out my guuunnn!" 🤣🤣 It's iconic
...and I'm gonna cap dis bitch :)
Haha same
For me it’s “and now I’m in the closet” 😂
This was also a huge move for Trey and Matt. Scientology wants you to fear them, and Trey and Matt did this to show there’s nothing to fear from them.
Tell that to Isaac Hayes.
@@TheKrensada his son came out and said issac hates leaving had nothing to do with trey and Matt making fun of Scientology. Idk if Scientologist killed him somehow 🤷♂️
religion in general has strangest stories...suppose no weirder than devil underneath us and god above watching everything we do and judging us for our sins and good deeds etc. The craziness of most religions is 1 of those off limit topics better off not touching with 100 ft pole.
@@Bonbonbon739 lmao ALL it has to do with it. That was the single reason he left, he was mad. Isaac Hayes quited South Park right after Scientology episode - March 13, 2006.
Dash: "Weren't people questioning John Travolta's sexuality at some point too?"
Everybody: "...at some point?"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
so he is?
What does he mean when he said "at some point".
He meant that NOW they no longer question John Travolta's sexuality?
But in any caso he IS or NOT?
One thing that separates Matt & Trey from so many in Hollywood is they have a genuine curiosity about religion. Any time they decide to take on religion, you can believe they’re bringing their A game. Tom Cruise really came after them after this episode and Isaac Hayes quit.
Actually, basicly the Church of Scientology quit for Isaac Hayse while he was in the hospital. He had nothing to do with it. He also died soon after under mysterious circumstances. I would suggest looking it up.
@@adrianadamsson6757 You're right. I didn't realize his son revealed this after his death.
@@adrianadamsson6757 I say that Isaac was murdered by the Scientologists.
@@treyowen9213 I think the same thing.
@@treyowen9213 He died because of a stroke
If you read the credits at the end of the episode, everyone is listed as John or Jane Smith.
Lol
well, they did say "Go ahead! Sue us!"
that's scary
Just an additional middle finger 🖕 to Scientologists in case some of them were watching the episode and thinking to themselves "... hey, maybe we can sue them?!!"
In a future episode, the school takes the kids on a field trip to the South Park Candy Factory. Stan sees Tom Cruise there as a worker placing fudge candy in boxes. Stan points at him and shouts, "Hey, Tom Cruise is packing fudge. How about that? Tom Cruise is a fudge packer!" I nearly soiled myself.
Ah, yes, the infamous double parter of 200 and 201. I know that those episodes are not on Comedy Central's website so I wonder if you have to get the DVDs in order to see them now.
That whole episode was hilarious especially with his mansion full of closets 😂🤣😂🤣😂
@@weepingscorpion8739 The Mohamed episodes. I think they are DVD only.
@@redcurrantart Indeed. Even Super Best Friends from season 5 is now DVD only. I think it was season 5.
@@weepingscorpion8739so is the cartoon wars 1 and 2 or whatever where cartman wants to cancel family guy. They were on Hulu for years but once South Park left Hulu and went to HBO max they removed those two episodes too. Sucks I love the manatees writing family guy scene
I know it's difficult to believe.
But yes.
Scientology is crazier than Matt and Trey.
And Matt and Trey are completely sane compared to these "R-tards"
“If Scientology isn’t a religion then why does that sign say Church of Scientology?”
“Oh that’s just this thing what’s the Bronco’s record again 6 and 2?” 🤣
7 and 2 ;)
Tom Cruise took the episode well. He had it pulled until the fans almost revolted and forced Comedy Central to put the episode back in circulation.
This episode came out about the same time one of the mission impossible movies was scheduled to come out. Tom Cruise threatened to not release mission impossible unless this episode was no longer aired. So for a short while, this episode was removed, but eventually it was brought back
I really respect South Park for doing this episode. Shows like Simpsons couldnt do this, beacause alot of their employees are in Scientology...They lost Chef because of this but it was all worth it!
Isaac Hayes didn't even quit the show himself, he was recovering in the hospital from a stroke while Scientology people issued his resignation and press release for him without his consent, according to Hayes' son. I listened to a radio interview Hayes did not long after this episode aired and when asked about it, he was cool as far as waving it off and saying something to the effect of "those guys make fun of everybody" in a dismissive tone. He didn't sound upset much less enough to leave the show to say the least.
@@citypopFM good to know. I thought they left south park angrily
@@citypopFM omg didnt know that XD fkn evil that shit
@@namename-qb5xe It goes deeper than that. Scientology basically killed him, because instead of getting medical treatment they forced him to do the scientology thing, including physical workouts. They wouldn't let him use his medicine, and he died because of it.
I love the episode with the return of Chef, and they keep blaming his behavior on "that fruity little club"
Did you catch the credits in this episode? Everyone was John or Jane Smith, part of the whole "sue me" gag.
It wasn't an intentional joke. They did that so their employees wouldn't be involved in any potential lawsuits
@@patrickkanas3874So they knew enough of what they were messing with, so prepared themselves for anything.
They DO actually believe this.
Funniest part of this all is that L. Ron Hubbard first took his story of Zenu to Hollywood to get it made into a movie. When he was turned down with this script he used it as the basis for his religion. He is famous for saying, if you want to become rich start a church.
Tom cruise had this episode pulled from comedy Central and threatened the company that he wouldn't make mission impossible 3 unless they pulled it.
Didn't South Park then threaten back they would stop the show altogether? I remember hearing something like that but idk
So, not so fun fact:
This was the episode that cost them the character of Chef. The voice actor for Chef was a Scientologist, and right around the time this episode came out, he suffered a stroke and was taken in by his Scientologist family.
However, Matt and Trey had no idea he’d suffered a stroke. All they knew, was that the voice actor left, and that a few days later they received a written letter claiming to be from him, demanding they pull this episode. Matt and Trey tried to reach out to him, but had no luck, eventually leading them to make the episode where they killed Chef off, out of resentment and anger. From their perspective, he’d never had any problems with them making fun of any other religion, but making fun of his was too far? So they made Chef into a pedophile, and killed him off in the worst possible way.
It wasn’t until years later that they learned that the letter had more than likely been written by his family while he was in a coma.
Wow ,fuck religion honestly humanity's worst construct
Wow i didn't know that poor Chef VA
RIP Isaac Hayes
Yes this actually what Scientology believes I didn’t believe it at first either but they really are that bat sh*t insane 😂
At the end credits of "Trapped in the Closet", all the names are changed to John Smith or Jane Smith so Tom Cruise and other Scientologists can't sue them. 🤣
Note that all the staff credits at the end of this South Park Scientology episode all said "John Smith" and "Jane Smith."
This was the episode that made Chef's voice actor "quit". And the reason the credits were all John and Jane Smith was to avoid being sued by scientologists for the jokes they made about scientology since they commonly do that. Also, yes, you can appreciate an artist's work but not condone what they did or who they are as a person.
This was actually one of their most controversial episodes ever. They caught a lot of flak and that ending was a result of it where everyone was telling Stan they are going to sue him. The Church of Scientology and Tom Cruise all had lawsuits. I heard this episode is what caused Chef to leave the show which I am not sure how true that is.
Also all that alien stuff with Lord Xenu and the volcanoes and soul processing station. Yes that is all real and what they actually believe. Once you donate enough money like 100s of thousands of dollars you get access to that information. However it was leaked and South Park took that leak and put it into the show lol.
Arguably this was one of their most controversial episodes cause how much people went after them. From Tom Cruise suing them to the Church of Scientology harassing them. Also in the credits they put the name John Smith in the credits to make sure members of their cast don’t get sued.
Isaac Hayes technically did leave the show because of this episode, though apparently it wasn’t on his own accord. Isaac’s son came out with the truth years later, explaining how his dad was hospitalized from a stroke around the same time this episode aired; and while he was unconscious, some of his associates in the church forged a resignation letter to Matt and Trey saying that he quit.
@@Cure_Hana Did they say to Matt and Trey that it was because of his health? If they did how did that start the rumor in the first place that he left cause of Scientology?
@@Antares-rt5ub no they said it was because they made fun of his religion Matt & Trey ofc believed it was coming from him and because he never had any Problem with them insulting other religions they called him a hypocrite and were really angry thats why they made the return of chef were chef had one of the most brutal deaths in the shows history after hearing from his son what really happened they apologized
@@cathycatsville67 I don’t know how true that is
as The Return of Chef’s biggest point is the show and boys saying Chef himself was not the problem it was the fruity club that poisoned his mind and how we should blame the club not chef
Scientology actually played a part when chef left the show in fact they were the reason
Yes I think it's possible to separate the art from the artist but only after the artist has died. Supporting his work while he is still alive is directly supporting him as well.
i'm not supporting it, i'm watching it online from a streaming site unrelated to their label
@@mikemath9508 I think this whole dilemma could be avoided if all revenue went instead to the victims and their families in cases where an artist does something terrible. It punishes the culprit, helps the victims and people don't have to pretend the music is suddenly not good anymore.
I have always enjoyed the song Rooftops by Lost Prophets. Their lend singer is currently serving I think 30 years for actual sexual assault on his then girlfriends BABY! While he could be the biggest waste of humanity in music history, I still hate that I still enjoy that song.
The context is super important. What did they do? Was it a pattern or a one-off? Did they try to make any amends? Did they take responsibility? What was the actual impact? I can forgive someone who screwed up and then grew up. It's almost impossible to forget a serial offender when consuming their art.
@@mclizzard2928 But that's precisely it. You don't need to forgive them in order to enjoy the art.
The dilemma is about "Should I still consume this thing I enjoy since the artist did xyz?"
It's about that feeling of guilt for enjoying something made by a person who did something terrible. But if your hatred of them is so strong that you can't even enjoy the art anymore, then it's pointless to worry about separating the artist from the art. You just don't enjoy the art itself at that point.
Could you react to their Game of Thrones parody? "Black Friday," "A Song of Ass and Fire," and "Titties and Dragons." Super hilarious trilogy.
Many people think this was the episode that made Isaac Hayes leave the show, but in reality what happened was it had made the church of Scientology so mad that they sent two representatives “on Isaacs behalf” to quit the show for him (he had a stroke and actually didn’t know the church was going to do that)
This version of the story was claimed by Hayes son after Hayes had passed away. It could be true but it also could be an exaggeration to make Hayes look better.
You finally reacted to this episode. I recently stumbled upon a video of I think a former scientologest reacting to this episode, it was actually pretty entertaining, and interesting.
A A Ron!
@@philliesphan9364 yes that was it
Scientology actually hired private ditectives to try to find dirt on matt and trey after this episode but gave up after not finding anything controversial
I highly recommend Leah Remini's show scientology and the aftermath. She was involved in scientology with her mom since a child, she left and wrote a book on her experience. Caused a big uproar with the "church" and so she teamed up with another former high ranking member of scientology to make a show exposing them and former members are on there telling their stories. It's pretty heartbreaking stuff actually. Forcing family members to shun each other, trying to destroy people's lives who leave the cult, the sheer amount of money (billions) they have garnered over the years. I think you'll find it fascinating. I watched the whole series as it aired few years back on a&e, it should be on either Netflix or Hulu now.
P.S. I discovered your channel couple weeks back and have been binging all the south park reactions. Love that you're doing full episodes. Enjoying the content 👍🏻
On your question of separating art from the artist, I do believe it's possible. But the artist should also also be taken into account when appreciating said art. As for Mr Kelly, perhaps the best ever 'Trapped in the Closet' spoof was the one done by American Dad. Might want to react to it at some stage, it's pure gold.
This episode actually got pulled off at one point, because Tom Cruise got all butt hurt.
'Now I'm in the closet. Now I'm in the closet toooo' 🎵🎶 haha RKelly is too much
Oh, fun fact about the e-meter: Ron Hubbard used them to determine that tomatoes feel pain, based on the fact that when he connected the device to a tomato then cut into it, the reading changed. He said "Tomatoes scream when sliced"...Of course, what's actually happening is that he introduced a _metal blade_ into an electrical field (all organic matter has an electrical field) which altered its electrical resistance and the electrometer reading altered to match. ...But he thought the tomatoes were just screaming at a frequency we couldn't hear.
To be fair, this was the 50s and 60s. Goofy ass "science" was everywhere. But he really just stuck to some of the weirdest nonsense. He believed you had dreams while still a sperm, and in what he called "engrams" (an actual term in neuropsychology for cognitive data [like memories] stored in physical cells, but he borrowed it and changed the meaning for Scientology) which are memories implanted into the spirit from past lives and unconscious trauma that cause all personality troubles and physical illness. Scientologists partake in "silent birth" because they think noise could create engrams on the baby and cause trauma and illness later in its life.
Also one of the most well-known "worst movies ever made", Battlefield Earth, is an adaptation of an L. Ron Hubbard book. John Travolta is a big Scientologist and made it a pet project, funded, directed, wrote and starred. He meant to split the tale into two movies but the first was such a bomb that he never moved on with part two.
Lol just noticed they credited everything to “John Smith” for litigation reasons 😂
It's not for litigation purposes. In a civil suit, they would probably have to disclose the names of their staff. It's actually just another not so subtle fuck you directed at Scientology.
It took forever for this episode to come out. They ended up changing the ending to actually speak to these people. So when Stan is screaming "OK fine sue me. I'm not scared of you go ahead and do it.". That was actually the South Park creators saying that to Tom Cruise and the others.
It only aired once before it was banned on Comedy Central because Tom cruise threatened Viacom and got his way.

they already knew Tom Cruise wouldn't take it well, that's why they dare him to sue them, you know! that last line from Stan, it has a double meaning
This is in my top 5 favorite episodes. It's so damn funny & actually almost got them canceled.

No, it didn’t almost get them cancelled. Don’t be dramatic.
@@nathanlindahl8336 yes it did. Tom Cruise & the church tried to cancel South Park because of this episode. Also Issac Hayes left because of it & the episode was banned for over a decade if not even to this day. This one caused a lot of controversy.
@@joesheridan5562 nope, Issac had some medical issue and his estate sent a letter saying he was upset. Matt and Trey both have said on record they are upset about what happened. This came out years ago. He never said anything about the episode. Also the episode you are thinking of is the one that showed Muhammad, I think 200 or 201.
Isaac Hayes who voiced Chef was a scientologist and quit the show in the aftermath of this episode.
Thanks for the continued South Park reactions- so often reactions to shows like this- Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad etc. (funny, adult animation) have been few and far between on youtube because of copyright and what not.. Appreciate you taking the time and editing them to a format that works for youtube!
And yes- I think you should separate an artist from their art, they're never intrinsically tied, it's okay for people to like the Cosby Show, the Jackson 5, and Late Registration without liking Bill Cosby, Joe/Michael Jackson, Kanye West, etc.
It depends on what the content actually is for some people . Some stuff are hard to watch or enjoy again even when letting the artist and his private life separated . Case in point i can still listen to some R Kelly stuff like "I believe i can fly" , but not really his sexually charged and themed songs , since they can easily take a whole new meaning , if not with clear hints about his depravity
There was a lot of fallout from this episode. Also made Issach Hayes quit because he was a Scientologist and didn't appreciate the episode too mich. They eventually address that with the episode "The Return of Chef", and that story revolves around a group he became a part of, and... no spoilers in case you ever check it out, but... things ensue.
Tom Cruise did try to sue Southpark. Southpark in response made an episode with Tom Cruise working in fudge factory. The boys on a field trip see Tom Cruise putting fudge in packages. They called him a "fudge-packer".
next video should be "insecurity" one of the most hilarious south park episodes of the newer seasons
This is the episode that caused Isaac Hayes to quit the show and stop voicing Chef because he is a Scientologist as well and supposedly wasn't too thrilled about how Scientology was portrayed in this episode.
He actually didn't quit the show. He was in a coma at the time and his manager or someone near him in the scientology community had him quit. I think there's an interview about it with Isaac's son and Matt and Trey.

At about ten years in the “church”, giving over $350,000 in classes and books, when you get to the level of OT (Operating Thetan) 3, that’s when you learn about Xenu.
There are videos and interviews all over RUclips about it.

The church of Scientology actually hired PIs to track Matt and Trey after that episode to try and find some dirt on them, unsuccessfully
Littlie trivia: the man who voiced Chef quitted south park after this episode because he believes scientology and he told matt and trey not to release this episode but they released anyway. So, after that episode you only see Chef another 2 times (with his voice from previous episodes combined and edited not his actual voice) then Chef dies and never comes back.
Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, was a Scientologist. He was offended by this episode so he quit South Park, and that's why Chef is later killed off in another episode spoofing Scientology.
Tom cruise 🤣🤣 handling of South park, is a great pop culture rivalry lmao
The founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) in Pasadena, CA, was Jake Parsons. Parsons was a follower of Alister Crowley. Crowley called himself, "the Beast." They both practiced the occult teachings of "The Golden Dawn." L. Ron Hubbard was friends with Parsons, and went to his orgies (according to legend) at Parsons mansion on Orange Grove Blvd., in Pasadena. L. Ron Hubbard had a thing for Parsons' wife. Hubbard borrowed $20,000 from Parsons in the 1950's, and flew off to go boating in Florida with Parson's wife, and the money. Parsons would later accidently blow himself up in his laboratory at his mansion on Orange Grove Blvd. Parsons and Hubbard were practicing something occultic called, "Babylon Working" about bringing some kind of new "master" (antichrist ?) into the world. The founder of American Rocketry and JPL was a real whack-a-doo. Cheers. 😎
They won every case, because they credited the episode to John and Jane Smith at the end, just look at the credits.
Also the disclamer they make at the front of the video helps a lot.
"All characters and events in this show - even those based on real people - are entirely fictional"

Episode 12 season 7 is a show called ALL ABOUT MORMONS. It is very similar to this one but it tells the story of Joseph Smith and the Mormon religion in a short story just like this ones short about what Scientologist believe.

Great video, Dash! Have you thought about doing the Season 7 smashing hit known as Krazy Kripples? It's a Crips vs. Bloods episode featuring Jimmy and Timmy. Think of it as a type of sequel to Season 5's Cripple Fight.
That story is what scientologists actually believe. There's a lot of documentaries (some on Netflix) from people that escaped Scientology.
that's the thing about South Park when they do research about a topic the get the facts down. The documentary called "Going Clear" is a great film to watch because it not only shows how terrifying Scientology truly is, but it shows the explanation from this episode in it.
"The head office in Los Angeles" told me everything I need to know.
I think this is the best episode they’ve done. Almost 20 years later still as relevant as it was
Some neat south park lore. Sadly this was episode Isaac Hayes left over being a Scientologists himself. Its speculated by some fans that it was the church that made him quit since he was cool with everything else SP did.
This episode was pulled shortly after and blew up as the first time SP was censored, they did eventually bring it back of course. But it was actual episode called Bloody Mary that had the catholic church angry that was first episode that was pulled, just didn't get as much attention. As far as I am aware only 3 episodes have remained pulled to this day and all of them being related to Muhammad the prophet. The irony of SP is that they don't ever actual make fun of Muhammad in those episodes and one of them even had him as character and no one cared.
8:23 yes its totally accurate... I've just watched an ex-scientologist reaction.
Also worth mentioning is that Isaac Hayes (Chef) hast left the South Park team because of this and they made an episode from his old voice files..
So you should watch that anytime soon! It's called "The Return of Chef"
Matt and trey actually wanted to say that Tom cruise was gay but comedy central wouldn't let them so they found a loophole and that's the closest lol
and in other episodes later, he works at a chocolate factory packing fudge
The ending with Stan saying he is not scared sue him was South Park daring these celebrities to sue them in real life.
Fun Plex, was a real place in Littleton Co, I worked there in the 90's, sadly they tore it down a few years ago.
It had everything under one roof, from bowling, pool tables, bar, restaurant, a huge arcade, skating rink, putt putt golf, Lazar tag, outdoor hockey rinks and so much more, it was the spot.
If you get a hold of the South Park Stick of Truth and Fractured Butt Whole video games, go to Stan's room Tom Cruise is still in the closet. 😂 AKA this episode had a big impact on Issac Hayes and he left, so tray and mat had to find a way to kill off chef, so they did the adventure's club episode. Star Wars parody at the end of it.
Only Stick of Truth
Fun Fact: Isaac Hayes who plays Chef on southpark is a scientologist. For a few episodes after this one, he didn't appear much and they used lines from other episodes, making it look like he quit... but it was just a prank.
Issac Hauyes (Voice of Chief) was. a scientionglist and left the show over this episode. You seem to miss it but all the credits at the end was John or Jane Smith.
Not seeing it mentioned, But chef (played by Isaac Hayes) also left the show because of this episode as he was a Scientologist. So they killed off and BURIED his character.
Fun fact. Before this episode aired, most scientologists (about 90%) didn't actually know what their beliefs were because they weren't at the level of scientology you have to be to learn that information. Some people spent their entire lives in the church and never learned the actual fundamental beliefs of their religion
The only part about the Xenu segment that's inaccurate is that in the real story, the frozen aliens weren't dumped into the volcanoes; they were chained to the outside of the volcanoes and then had hydrogen bombs dropped on them.
It’s absolutely crazy what they believe and this episode explains it perfectly lol
The biggest consequence this episode had was not getting sued, but breaking up their friendship with Issac Hayes. They hate Scientology after what they believe that religion did to Hayes.
The episode caused Isaac Hayes to quit as Chef because Stone and Parker made fun of Scientology.
A good channel to check out here is Growing up in Scientology. This episode was my first look into it too and I was also confused, wondering if they were BSing...but no. It's pretty accurate to what they believe.
The only difference between a religion and a cult is one is accepted by society and the other is not.
when I saw this episode on the recommendations I immediately clicked. this is such a great one. whenever I show this to my friends I always have to say. " now before I show this episode you have to realize everything that they're saying is pretty much 100% accurate". it's almost like Mormonism but on steroids. now I feel Mormonism is ok because I have friends who are Mormon and they're all good people. not saying people in Scientology aren't good people but their leaders are awful. look up crimes of the Church of Scientology and you'll know what I mean.
After Tom Cruise raised a fuss about this episode they dedicated another episode to him that was just as insulting. He worked in a fudged factory as a product packer. Yes, his job title was a fudge packer and it was hilarious.
the pic in the back is L. Ron Hubbard. hes the guy that wrote the Dyanetics sci-fi books that Scientology is based on.
Tom cruise got the episode permanently banned on comedy central. He threatened Comedy Centrals parent company, Viacom, that he wouldn’t act in the newest Top Gun movie if they didn’t. So sure enough little Tommy got his way. Jennifer Lopez was also really mad about her episode.
It was Mission Impossible 3 you're talking about. That episode came out in 2005 and mentions Jay Feely and Jake Plummer for crying out loud.
Ive never seen the beginning of this episode every time I tuned into watch south park I never understood WHY ARE THEY IN A CLOSET?! XD
This was also the episode that allegedly caused Issac Hayes to resign, although nobody really knows the truth about what happened with that. He had a stroke and was in bad shape anyways so I'm pretty sure he couldn't do Chef anymore anyways.
Check out the interview that Isaacs son did with Matt and Trey. It explains what happened.
Sourh park has a bit of controversial episodes like this one. Some are banned. And impossible to watch unless you have physical copy of the show. But the most recent ones are from the same season.
Season 23.
Episode 2: Band in China
Episode 7: Board Girls
That Xenu stuff isn't just what they believe, you aren't even supposed to know about that until you get to a certain level in the "church". It's the secret truth that gets revealed to you once you prove yourself devoted or whatever. Good times.
I'll never forget the time my friends and I were drunk and high in Time Square and a scientologist handing out flyers tried to convert us so my friend grabbed the whole stack of flyers and smacked him in the face with them and yelled "NOBODY LIKES YOU F*GG*T!!". Then 2 sexy Dominican lady cops stopped us to search us and we all had drugs on us so I started rapping very loud at some dude selling his cd's so people would crowd around us thinking we were battling. I swear the crowd built up in like 2 seconds and we dipped off through it to grand central and lost the cops but my other friend overdosed from Xanax while we were running and we had to take him to Jacobi Hospital. That's a New York Tuesday for ya.
lol the credits are all John Smith and Jane Smith
‘Sue me!’ Then a bunch of fake names
Lol listening to the outro, side glancing at Isaac Hayes 🤣 😂
Awesome !!! Check those: Krazy Kripples (about gang wars), Guitar Queer-o (about guitar hero lol) and Crème Fraîche (about Randy in Masterchef)
Tom Cruise had this episode pulled from airing on TV shortly after the original air date. Viacom was the parent company of Comedy Central and was also behind the Mission Impossible movies. Tom Cruise was going to refuse promotion of his Mission Impossible movie that was coming out if the episode wasn't pulled.
I would also like to say that today I recieved a Scientology flyer about a "free personality test" for the first time ever. It was so random. They were handing them out at an MLS soccer game and I thought it was going to be a program for the game. I laughed my ass off when I read a bit and confirmed that it was a Scientology questionairre. It has freaking 200 questions on it.
9:46 that there is Scientology's main weapons. Disassociation. Even simply questioning flaws gets you disowned if your a friend and family member of a scientologist.
I'm able to separate art from the artist in most cases. Roman Polanski for example. He's done some terrible things but I can't deny he's a great filmmaker and has made many awesome movies over the years.
This episode is what caused Isaac Hayes to leave the show because as a Scientologist he felt he could no longer work with Trey and Matt after they essentially lambasted his religion. But, everything they said about "this is what Scientologists actually believe" is accurate. There's a couple of mistakes made with terminology, but it's fairly accurate, has never been denied, and nobody got sued over this - Paramount tried to pull some shady shit about pulling the episode from being rebroadcast after Tom Cruise threatened to cancel publicity tour for Mission Impossible III over plans to rebroadcast it, but they eventually did rebroadcast it, a lot, and nobody was taken to court.
As for your question about sepperating the music from the artist's... uhh... ahem... actions? There's a reason that nobody listens to Gary Glitter, Rolph Harris, or Lostprophets
13:29 This was around the time that Paramount was filming Mission Impossible III, because Viacom owns both Paramount and Comedy Central, it wasn't hard for Cruise to catch wind, but rather than sue, he threatened to walk off the set while they were in the middle of making it. So the episode was taken off the air until filming was finished. The thing that really struck a blow to South Park was when the COS (Church of Scientology) forced Isaac Hayes aka Chef to quit. Hayes was also a Scientologist, but up until COS forced him to, he had no problems with them making fun of Scientology because they already made fun of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Mormonism and the like, so Scientology would have been next whether he liked it or not. Hayes quit and they lampooned and blamed Scientology once more, by portraying them as a conspiring group of child molesters called the Super Adventure Club. Hayes sadly passed away not too long after they killed off Chef.
