    Excellent trio of videos explaining this maintenance item. Mine currently works fine on my '98 but if it goes wrong I now know how to fix it, thank you.

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  3 года назад

      Thank you! The 98 will be very slightly different, but essentially the same. The place to monitor for failed seals is the inside of the windshield "a" pillars: a leak shows up as dark streaks running down the them. Hopefully many years before any problems with yours.

    Great info...thank you for taking the time to post these videos. I have a 97 SL...purchased brand new years ago. She still is a great car and I have a major soft spot for her even though we have two newer models. However, as age creeps up on us all, she needs a little TLC every now and then. Simply, your informative videos are a huge help and sincerely appreciated. Thank you again for all you do.
    Warmest regards,

    Very helpful video, I have looked at the other ones as well. A friend has an R129 and we have just spotted the weep of fluid today, 6th April 2019, watched your videos and I am confident now to do the replacement for him, thank you again

      Excellent. The key things are: keep every thing clean. Wear safety goggles when you remove the clip,( it can really snap out amazingly fast.) DO NOT scratch the rod that the piston rides on. Don't lose the small line clips, they are almost impossible to source. And use the correct hydraulic fluid, not brake fluid which will ruin the seals very quickly. Good luck and thank you !

    Wery usefull video thanks. Are the cylinders( 19&46 vs 44&47really different in design or can you use the same type on both sides?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  4 месяца назад

      They are actually different from each other. It has to do with how they are mounted relative to the hard line connections. Held next to each other they are like mirror images.

    Left and right side cylinders are different? or same part #?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  Год назад

      Yes, the hydraulic ram cylinder is part number 1298001672 for both sides. (at least for 1990, newer models may have a newer p/n) The cylinder is simply flipped from one side to the other. Make sure the port numbers (47 & 77, then 49 & 46) coincide with the numbers on the center distribution block.

      Actually, your best bet is watch the video series by Top Hydraulics. A guy named Klaus has really done his homework on this . His instructions are FAR better than mine. ( I know "Macys doesn't sell Gimbels", but I would rather you fix your top right than just prop up my own ego.)

    Great video's. Do you have any suggestions on cleaning hydraulic fluid from the canvas convertible top?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  8 лет назад +2

      Glad you liked them! All my videos are really about seeing options. If watching them makes you say "I could do that!" That's great. If it makes you say "No way! Too complicated." and give the task over to a pro, that is great too. At least you'll be able to make an informed decision. I've never had to clean hydraulic fluid off the soft top, BUT, I would try a cleaner like "Tuff Stuff" (that's how they spell it) Comes in a yellow & red can, white foamy spray. I've gotten good results on most soft surfaces in the car, dashboard, seats etc.

    Good video on this repair.... why would you not use the original type seal?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  5 лет назад +1

      When it came time to replace the seals, I searched the internet. The only source I could find for the original seals (Mercedes only sells the complete assembly) was from a guy in Europe who had made custom reproduction seals. (they seemed VERY nice and well made) They were over $200 for the set. The O-rings you see me use were from a kit on eBay for all the top hydraulics included.
      The kit was $19.95. Those O-rings are still working fine.

    If it has been leaking what is the best way to bleed the lines to make sure there is no air?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  4 года назад

      No need to. The system gets pressurized by the pump only when you run it. After replacing the rams, just cycle the top a few times and check for leaks. It should be fine.
      Alden

  • @mikeumm
    @mikeumm 4 года назад

    Going to try the o ring repair instead of replacing the cylinders (rams) here pretty soon. How do you bleed the system? At the pump?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  4 года назад +1

      No need to bleed the system. It is not under pressure until the pump actually runs. Self drains back to the reservoir. DO make sure you have all the connections tight (in my video you can see where I had one fitting not entirely on)

      @@FlashDriveFilmsAwesome. Thank you! For the quick response and informative videos. Yeah I went to undo the hard top today so I could start to replace the headliner and check out the condition of the rag top since the car has been sitting for 5 or 6 years... And oh my god the amount of fluid that began pouring into the car lol I about had a heart attack. So my afternoon involved removing all the trim on the top of the windscreen so i could clean out all the fluid :(
      And now I'm dreading that c clip that holds the shaft. Doing that without scratching the shaft is a peach I'm sure.
      I'll let you know how it goes

    I scratched up the piston rod pretty bad trying to separate from the other pieces, now the seal I put in keeps popping out when I move the end cup up and down the rod. Any ideas to how I can smooth out the piston rod to get it back to normal?

    • @FlashDriveFilms
      @FlashDriveFilms  5 лет назад

      That is really bad news. I do not know of a way to just smooth the scratches out because it will make the rod slightly smaller and the seal even more likely to pop out. The only sure fix is a new rod or hydraulic ram assembly. There is so much pressure in that small cylinder when it operates that it really needs a very tight fit to not leak. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
