The main pet peeves i have are the 2 moments of Goku's heart stopping and the magical water cuz they're just moments that happened in the previous arc but worse. And it really feels sloppy asf from toriyama, but piccolo was the start of the main villains that become some of the best shonen villains ever.

While I can appreciate the Piccolo Daimao Arc elevating the level of action and drama that Toriyama wanted to experiment with for the series, I can’t help but feel that a lot of its shortcomings hold it back from being considered great. Piccolo Daimao has excellent stage presence as a villain, but he is just a cliché bad guy, with a less than stellar introduction to the story through the interference of the Pilaf gang that happens off-screen, who has plans of world domination. Compared to the ensemble of the Red Ribbon Army that have their own quirks to offset their typical bad guy ambitions or Tao Pai Pai’s nonchalant attitude that supplements his menacing charm or the Crane School that acts as a dark reflection of the Turtle School, Piccolo Daimao as a character is more run of the mill with only his actions making him noteworthy. While plot conveniences aren’t new to Dragon Ball, at least the ones before and the ones that come later do a better job working within the confines of the narrative and maintaining the story’s momentum instead of feeling like nothing more than a means to move the plot along.
The more I think about how the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai Arc ended, the more I think that the story really could’ve ended on chapter 194 if Toriyama wanted to conclude the series then and there. There is a bit of finality to the arc given Goku’s accomplishment of winning the tournament on his third time participating and defeating one of the greatest villains he had come across once again, but it also manages to convey the kind of open-ended finale that feels conclusive but still hints that the adventure continues on that chapter 519 managed to accomplish.

24:31 Funnily enough from what I heard Shonen Jump was against making Goku taller. Something about keeping the character design consistent so it can be remembered so something on this terms

I wish the afterlife hadn't been confirmed in Z. Knowing that hell and heaven and an und infallible judge exist kills the drama. Not to mention that Gouk becoming a literal mass murderer as a child is just glossed over?

Not to take away anything from Toriyama, but a lot of the praise you are giving him in the intro is misplaced. All those slow mood and tension building scenes of Goku "feeling" something is not right. All of that is anime only, in the manga krillin just kinda gets wacked at the end of a chapter, and if you zoom in you can kinda tell goku is maybe shedding a tear in one panel but he is mostly angry. Him flying away while remember all his memories with krillin, anime only. Roshi, Bulma and Roshi seem to give no fucks that krillin just died lol. Ironically is Tien who cradles Krillins corpse, respect as a fighter I guess, maybe an affinity for short bald kids. I agree these episodes were great but a lot of the credit for change of mood and tempo goes to the director. chapter 134 and 135
