I'm getting 48-49 second lap times on the stopwatch here on my laptop. That's about how fast they were running in 2001's Daytona 500 on old tires in a pack. I'd say this is working out better than I thought it would overall. From the looks of this, there seems to be a lot of shuffling around and lead changes, drivers getting runs, falling back, coming back through the field again. I like it. Seeing videos like this reminds me of the good ol NASCAR Preseason Thunder days!

I love that denny and logano at around 4:00 try to pull away there and kurt and the pack bring them back. There were lots of runs and lots of passes every lap really good work here.
I’m going to the 500 this year, my first race in person since I was 9 years old, and this just got me so excited. These things sound MEAN in a pack and the pack looks pretty wild

It was like that with the old car. Watch the last few laps of the Dega fall race, Denny was shoving CBell to a HUGE lead trying to catch the yellow for rain.
Yeah I liked how the 11 was able to push the 22 to get a little gap down the backstretch but was even better to see the 45 close right back in on them without someone pushing him.
Will be curious if this was testing bump drafting or not. Drivers tend to push it alot harder with a checkered flag waving in the wind. Alot about this car won't be known till mid season and next season. As the teams start making there set up tweaks and find what driver and car want/like. Every time with the previous car nascar would make a change to slow the cars down the teams would find speed in other ways.
You can defend tell this car is definitely going to race a lot better this car reminds me of 1987 with how much larger the car got there’s going to be so many different leaders in the Daytona 500 this year.

With the new car is basically who can get adapted to it quicker. Kurt Busch has been top 10 in all the large test sessions and has been doing really good. I could see him being a contender.

@Yaha Ha I love f1 and v8 supercars in Australia. Just give the entire season a chance. There are some very boring races, ( this is coming from a lifelong nascar fan). Some tracks are raced twice a year. Daytona, talladega, Martinsville, and I believe Bristol is still twice. Daytona and talladega and must watch races, always amazing. Bristol and Martinsville are short tracks, about .5 a mile long but good rough racing. Nascar has added more road courses which are fun to watch, (reminds me alot of v8 supercar racing in Australia.) There are alot of unknowns this year but with the new cars the 1.5 mile tracks maybe more fun to watch. In the past they have been extremely boring.
Encouraging is the two car superdrafts are effective again and solo cars ran them down and passed. Amid the battling led by the Penske Fords and Kurt Busch it was encouraging seeing Erik Jones able to draft back to the top six
To me these cars have a similar sound to the 4th gen x pipe cars during 95’-07’ years. The sound isn’t exactly like them but definitely a more high pitched sound than cot and gen 6 cars.
It’s a good combination of both. I miss the sound of the early 2000s cars but this is honestly the closest thing to that since then. I’m excited for the 500!
Not gonna lie. As I went on and watched the test session, I started calling it like an actual race. And I was just having a *blast* calling it. I called Kurt Busch winning the Daytona 500 (i know it's a test session, but let me have the moment).
It will be interesting to see if Nascar feels they need to do something to keep the cowl flaps from opening so frequently when in a tight draft. Given that they are so large now, they might really impair the driver's vision.
I was watching live earlier and one of em ripped right off. I forgot who it was, think Chastain, got really close to the rear of a car and the flap started going wild and ended up ripping off... lucky it didnt go through a windshield, it was violent

Absolutely love the sound of the super speedway engines, when they got on the straights, love the smell of gear oil and high octane racing fumes. I hope Atlanta will be good to after the tricks they added to the track

Good improvements in these cars. The IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) along with the bigger rear tires looking great for stability on the Superspeedways!
Just listening to the audio with no commentary or music is...I can listen to it and fall asleep...like spa sounds. It's comforting. Wish it were louder.

Oh yeah baby! These NextGen cars look and sound great! Seems like the drivers can pretty much choose any line they want and make it stick. The cars also seem quite a bit more stable at the rear and aren't as easily disturbed by the side draft. Can't wait for the season to start. =)

Guys look like they can get runs when they get them and and move around in the pack. The drivers don't appear to be tied down to the unstableness of the cars and they can fall back and make their way back to the front. It feels like Daytona 18-21 years ago, where the aero package allowed drivers to have lead changes. Look at the #45 of Kurt Busch in that footage, he gets shuffled back but Hamlin picks him up and pushes him right to the front. Handling is going to be a big factor much moreso this year. This stuff looks exciting though.

They are running to high of an Rpm... and if they would run the X-pipes again, you would get that sound back

Well, it is just a test. But the nextgen does appear to be leveling the playing field a bit.
It’s just testing. They pretty much pre plan and orchestrate a lot of it between teams and manufacturers. They’re trying to get data

But who cares when the racing if good, if someone didn’t like lower speeds but was told this test was 195 MPH, they wouldn’t have cared

There's so much negative pressure at the base of the windshield from a close draft and the tall spoilers that it's bringing up the flaps on the hood!
