    Never ridden the shuttle. A thought: you should record the train going in the other direction so that viewers can see the entrance to the (now unused) tunnel where the infamous Malbone Street wreck happened in 1918, and then add that part of the video as an addendum to this one.

      WOW! I was just gonna mention the exact same thing about recording a video of the line in the opposite direction....
      While we're at it, at the point where the train left Prospect Park and the track straightened up after the bend, has anyone else noted the width of the tunnel at that point?! This is a remnant of the time when there were two tracks in the space, with the southbound track forming what's now the northbound express track. The line was two tracks all the way to Coney Island until somewhere around c. 1913-1916....

      @@wtaenyc When I was a boy growing up on Prospect Place, the Franklin avenue shuttle was my first exposure to good rapid transit. In fact, I was born in the hospital immediately adjacent to the line (I guess when the doctor slapped me upside the ----, I was facing the tracks at the crucial moment when a string of southbound BX units in tandem [6 cars of Standards] came rumbling along, and screamed "MAAA-MAAAAA!!".
      Putting levity aside, I aspired to become a Transit Authority employee especially as a motorman (now "train operator")! The FORWARD VIEW on the trains got me permanently "addicted" to passenger rail, and whenever riding the subway, I always made an effort to trudge up to the front car just to obtain this prized visual treat!
      I made efforts to befriend as many motormen as I could; one of whom was a close friend of some family friends we frequently visited. At first glance, I wasn't sure who he was; I could've sworn I'd seen that face---in dark sunglasses----sometime before that moment.
      My mother, an automotive addict, never let me know who he was or what his job was until we got home, saying: "he's a motorman on the subway...." to the family in general. DAMN, A MISSED OPPORTUNITY!
      I later made future efforts to contact him, but then I found out a few months later that he was murdered on the job, somewhere under 6th avenue; I'm not sure of which exact station the evil deed took place....
      That both greatly angered and saddened me. Even though quite traumatic, nothing compared to what was to come a couple of years later: moving to the most AUTOMOBILIATED death camp with traffic lights in the entire nation: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!
      Yet despite even THAT trauma, I still never forgot Mr. Kelly (or Kelley, whatever....); maybe he could be memorialized in another "haunted tales of the NYC subways" video!

    The Franklin ave shuttle has long fascinated me and I rode this shuttle quite a lot when I was a kid. It’s changed significantly. There used to be tracks going in both directions for the entirety of the trip. The Dean st station is completely gone. The Frankin Ave station is completely remodeled. I remember being amazed at all the old wooden stations that used to line this route and thinking that it was such a cool oddity of the subway system.
    Some fun and not so fun facts about this line:
    -It’s one of the two lines in the system where the motorman pulls double duty as the conductor, opening and closing the doors on both sides.
    -There are only two trains servicing this line.
    -The worst accident in NYC subway history occurred in 1918 just north outside the Prospect tunnel, on the opposite southbound side.That is the location of a steep ‘S’ curve that was taken too fast by a train with wooden cars. About 100 people were killed. “The Malbone wreck” was so infamously tragic, the city changed Malbone st to Empire st.
    Cool to see the Frankin shuttle again after 40 years. Thanks.

      It must have been pretty cool to have ridden the train when it used to be wooden cars and it is an honor to be able to bring you back a taste of a train you used to ride 40 years ago. It's interesting that things have changed as it relates to the layout/stations but it still remains one of the intriguing lines in the system. Thanks again for sharing that history and we hope we continue to earn your support. 🫡

      It's quite the experience to read comments from those who've ridden the line in its very fabled past; I too remember when there was a Dean street stop----the train picked up/dropped off very few passengers there. Just north of Dean street, a spring switch narrowed the line from two tracks to one for the Franklin/Fulton terminal which, btw, was the junction from the Fulton Street El. All the times I rode that line when I lived in NYC, I never understood why there was such a huge pedestrian plaza above the intersection; that was the old junction!
      Speaking of this line's past, there are remnants of when it was steam powered; a water tower serving the locomotives was located at what's now the corner of Atlantic Avenue and the Franklin Avenue right-of-way. Post-electrification, we can see plans for the LIRR to have connected with the line; a bell mouth in the LIRR line near the Bedford Avenue portal would've taken trains from the Flatbush/Atlantic terminal to Coney Island.
      Just one minute into the video, note that the tunnel is wide enough for two tracks; before the Brighton line was completed under Flatbush Avenue, those tracks formed what's now the center tracks at the Prospect Park station. Old images of the Malbone Street wreck clearly show tis alignment, as well as images showing the widening of the Brighton line from two to four tracks during the years of the Dual Contracts.
      Btw, Malbone Street we changed to Empire BOULEVARD.

      I remember when Park Place had two tracks with an island platform, and the station house was located on the south side of Park Place. I faintly remember a stairway near the entrance to the old stop; it might've connected an adjacent street to the south.
      At home on Prospect Place, I could look down the street and see the station platform extending clear across the street; it must've had a nine-car capacity if BMT Standards were used. Whenever the train moved towards Fulton Street, it'd spark off the third rail in a bright, blinding flash which could be seen from across Bedford Avenue, and on a quiet Sunday morning, you could even HEAR the spark!

    I have rode on this shuttle train on different occasions when visiting New York. I do remember taking a friend with me on this train and told her about the horrible Malbone Street wreck in 1918. Then she wondered why I paused briefly. I told her we were riding on the train as we were going from Franklin Avenue to Prospect Park. And it was on the date of the tragic crash, November 1st. We did see the bend where the ill-fated train jumped the track and crashed into the wall that fateful day. Close to 100 riders lost their lives. Because of the tragedy, the name Malbone Street was renamed Empire Boulevard. She was fascinated about the history I shared about the route. As an addendum, you could show an archival photo of the wreck with a brief description of what happened. I'm sure other railfans have suggested the same thing.

    • @CraigFThompson
      @CraigFThompson 5 месяцев назад +1

      And pertaining to such an extension, I think the line should be extended to Myrtle Avenue, and turn towards Broadway, thus duplicating a portion of the old Myrtle Avenue line, which I also think should be extended past Metropolitan Avenue along the Bay Ridge branch right-of-way, then divert up towards LGA, to possibly connect with an extension of the Ditmars line, forming a huge loop connecting Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. All stations will accommodate ten-car trains (or eight cars, if they're 75 feet in length each).
      Through Manhattan, the line will utilize the BMT lines to the Manhattan Bridge, thru Dekalb Junction, an onto the 4th avenue line to the rebuilt center tracks of the Sea Beach (present-day N train), and stopping at a rebuilt New Utrecht Avenue station (needing this rebuild to convert the station into an express station). This will be the only stop before reaching Coney Island, where it'd run local on the Brighton line back to Prospect Park. The sharp curve on the southbound track will be "flattened out" to allow for increased speeds.
      Since the line will resemble a huge loop, we could dub it the "O" train!!

      We look forward to a system where everyone follows in your footsteps and decides to place their trash into the bins provided. It is unfortunate that we all don't value the system as much as we should, hence why the litter even exist but as we take small steps, eventually that positivity will vibrate throughout the system and inadvertently, throughout the city because 'New York City is Underground.' This line could be relocated underground with full-length platforms to connect with the Crosstown Line and eliminate the shuttle.

    • @CraigFThompson
      @CraigFThompson 5 месяцев назад

      What's so wrong with its present location, except for the sharp curve on the Malbone Street wreck track?! That area would need the most immediate work; platform extensions could come later.

    • @anonymous3738
      @anonymous3738 5 месяцев назад

      @@CraigFThompson Trains just have to take the curve slowly, which is why there are speed limits. As for extending the platforms, which would eventually become necessary since all the newer rolling stock are too long to fit, it’s not urgent but still possible. If the line were to connect to the G, it would connect at Bedford-Nostrand Aves and the unused center track can be used for occasional short-turns.

    • @CraigFThompson
      @CraigFThompson 5 месяцев назад

      @@anonymous3738 My plan would be to take the line to Myrtle Avenue, turn towards Broadway, then continuing on to Metropolitan Avenue z where the line will then be extended along the Bay Ridge branch to a point where it'll go underground for a short distance to LGA, where it'll then go elevated to connect with an extension of the Ditmars line.
      Going thru Manhattan, the line will cross the Manhattan Bridge into Dekalb Junction, and onto the 4th avenue line to the rebuilt center tracks of the Sea Beach line, stopping at a rebuilt New Utrecht Avenue station (New Utrecht needs to be reconfigured into an express station to allow transfers to the West End (D train) line). This will be the last stop before Coney Island, where the train will switch to the local tracks of the Brighton line back to Prospect Park.
      Since the line will appear to be a huge circle, why not dub the new service the "O" train?!

    • @anonymous3738
      @anonymous3738 Месяц назад

      I just thought of an even better idea. Maybe connect to the Sixth Ave Line via the unused layup tracks at Second Ave by building an entirely new line. Because the Crosstown Line doesn’t have much ridership and connecting it to Sixth Ave can put unused tracks to good use. Plus, it can bring back the V with the M reverting back to brown.

      The reason for the length of time is because the train left Prospect Park "a little hot", and had to waste time at Eastern Parkway for the southbound to arrive.
      The MTA really phucked up the line when they single-tracked most of its length, especially at Park Place, which has become a bottleneck of sorts....
