So summertime is here. Yeah. One of my favorite seasons of the year. And interestingly, I've been getting a lot of questions about melon from my patients, wondering if they could have melon or actually thinking they can't have melon. Many people, especially talking about watermelon, thinking there's too much sugar in watermelon. So I wanted to have this conversation with you to get the facts out and get the facts straight. First of all, a couple of lessons to learn. We're looking at total grams of carbohydrate when we're looking at a food product, not grams of sugar. So the grams of sugar are added into the total grams of carbohydrate.
So for watermelon, for example, the serving size is actually one and one-quarter cups of cubed watermelon, which to me, I think that's a nice serving. And for honeydew and cantaloupe, it's a serving of one cup cubed. Still, a really nice serving. So we're not talking about grams of sugar when we're looking at foods, but we're looking at total grams of carbohydrate. And these portions that I just mentioned are 15 grams of carbohydrate portion sizes and that's what we use for carb counting.
And it makes doing the math a little bit easier by doing 15-gram increments. So when we're talking about a serving size of food, we usually are referring to for grams of carbohydrate 15. So, facts: one and one-quarter cup of watermelon is a serving of carbohydrate or 15 grams of carbohydrate and one cup of cubed cantaloupe or honeydew is also a serving.
I want to make sure that we're including fruits in our diet. After all, they provide lots of vitamins and nutrients. That important point, though, when we're looking at carbohydrates and managing blood sugar readings, is that we can have a serving of melon-like this. We just can't have the whole melon.
Thanks for sharing ♥️
This video should be required viewing for everyone with Type II who loves fruit. Thanks.
Steve Edelstein thank you. Glad you found the information useful. Let us know if there are other “must know” pieces of advice you’d like to hear more about. .
Thank you for sharing this information--especially for our Midwest Summers because we love melons!
Group Medical Supply, LLC Many of my patients from the South love melons too! Personally, my go to is watermelon ( bigger portion) 😀 Cool and refreshing.
I am happy to hear this. I absolutely love watermelon. I am pre-diabetic, so I am watching my food choices and consumption very carefully. Along with exercising. When I eat watermelon it’s less than a 1/2 cup mixed with a few blueberries, so 1 1/4 cups serving will feel like winning the lotto….lol thanks for the advice 😊
🙌 kudos to you for focusing on the portion size and including exercise in your routine. I’m happy to confirm that you can eat/enjoy melon.
It’s SEASONAL....ENJOY IT
I agree! Fresh melons scream summer time to me 😀
I find when I pair 1 cup melon with eggs, veggies and a good meat. Melon (most of all watermelon) keeps my fuller longer. And helps to keep me hydrated plus keeps my sugar in check. Lovely fruit melon.
Thanks for sharing: Good combo! Glad the protein + carb is helping you feel fuller and keep your blood sugar in check. Enjoy! 🍉
How are we gonna reverse t2d if we're carb counting. When we should be looking at all types sugars carb etc.
There is a lot of research on plant based eating that shows potential for type 2 diabetes remission. And just as a FYI, plant based eating includes healthy carb choices. Check out some of my other videos.

Hi. Which measuring cup is the 'One Cup'?
Typically it’s the largest cup if you are using the stack of cups that come in 1/4 c, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup and 1cup. Or you can use the glass measuring cup that shows you the 1 cup measuring mark. Hope that helps
@@DiabetesEveryDay thanks. Ok. We can take a cup which is used in baking, right?
@@neelammunot7249 yes you can use a cup used for baking.

I suggest eating watermelon after bacon and eggs or a big steak or roast lamb when you’re feeling full to avoid big spikes in blood sugar. This also works for me in keeping off weight and avoiding gout! Totally agree - portion size matters!
It’s actually the fat and protein in the meals you suggested that helps slow down the spike.
@@DiabetesEveryDay Yes, I can see it when my stomach doesn’t expand! :)
This is what set me off last year. I was eating honeydew after work when I became incredibly thirsty. This worried me because everything I drank ran me straight to the bathroom. Three days later, I spent the weekend in the emergency room and was out of work on medical leave for a month figuring out the ups and downs of insulin injections. The doctors said I had diabetes type 2 maybe a year or two before but didn't warn me about anything. It felt like a wait-and-see thing for them. Perhaps they saw it too many times or were just too busy to help. Not sure, but my family and I are still confused since I wasn't a fan of added sugar or overeating. At any rate, here I am. This is the new me, and I'm still trying to do better.
Sorry your doctors didn’t suggest meeting with a diabetes educator. Glad you are here! As a dietitian and diabetes educator, I’m a fan of “all foods can fit” but there is some strategy that goes along with that motto to assure your blood sugar stays in target range. Just a heads up… diabetes management, at times may require daily problem solving. Thanks for watching.

You can eat as much fruit as u like.

I'm type 2.
The doctors want you sick. More money for them.
can a diabetic goes on a watermelon diet will it affect them if they eat it as the way when having meals
There’s a couple important points. Portion size matters of the food choices you make and I don’t recommend eating only watermelon. A variety of fruit is recommended and to help avoid blood sugar spikes, consume fruit w a meal or with protein. Hope that helps answer your question.
Ok thanks. I stopped eating it. Had some for the first time a couple days ago.
What is the amount of carbs (not net) a T2 diabetic should have in a day ?
It varies from person to person but typically for women, it’s 30-45 grams carb per meal. Make sure to check out my video about net carbs. If you have trouble locating it, just let me know and I’ll send you the link.
@@DiabetesEveryDay thank you so much
@@DiabetesEveryDay Per meal? Wow! I was told this is the limit per day, otherwise I would need medication. I would rather you be correct on this one! :)
@@krisjustin3884 yes, the general recommendations are per meal.
@@DiabetesEveryDay So can you keep to that limit per meal and avoid diabetes medication? I guess it depends on the individual?
How are
WhT about cantoupe
I discuss cantaloupe in this video. Did you have more questions that I haven’t answered?
Talk to the point
Point 1: people with diabetes can eat melon; Point 2: portion size matters. Hope that helps.
Can we eat or not
Yes, you can eat melon. Portion size is important for all fruit.

You can have the whole melon, just eat 20 grams of protein before you eat the melon. Almost 0 rise in blood sugar
Eating protein with a carbohydrate food can help slow down the rise in blood sugar but there is no defined amount of protein and no defined amount of how much your blood sugar will be slowed down from rising. Most definitely an individual case by case.
So don't eat the whole melon ah!
SkinnerValt yes, portion size matters.
Accurate food calculations need to be weighed. Not cup size . Fact.
Measurements are important. ✅
I ate watermelon and sugar went up to 223.
Sorry. Did you eat it alone or combined with a source of protein?
@@DiabetesEveryDay I ate it with fried chicken lol
@@freespirit7450 sooo it could be the extra carbs eaten from the fried chicken as the culprit. Maybe.
Watermelon + fried chicken would be two sources of carb and that’s all depending on portion size… could equal more than 2 sources of carb. 🤷♀️
