As a Papua New Guinean, it's truly offensive remarks made by Joe Biden. If you delve into the history of World War II, in the Kokoda Track, the Papuan and Oro people helped wounded soldiers and offloaded cargoes there. In the muddy, stiff torrents, they assisted American and Australian soldiers. The Australian and American soldiers bestowed upon them the name 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels'. If he understands the significance of the name given, he should be grateful we aided them. The fact that he gave little recognition, in fact, he insulted the fallen heroes who helped them in a fight that wasn't theirs, and the countless Papua New Guineans who became victims of war in their own land. On this special day, he should recognize and appreciate us; instead, he mocks my country for the actions of a few communities. Well, that says a lot about who he is.
In terms of cannibalism, it occurred in a few places like Kutubu and parts of Central Province. That's according to our history books. Cannibalistic practices occurred when an enemy tribe was captured; it was an expression of their frustrations, anger, and, most importantly, a form of revenge. It wasn't a daily occurrence. Just imagine, if your enemy had killed your father or relatives, and when they were caught in your territory, they were consumed. Can cannibals be angels? Remember my people, Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels!
A president of a powerful country like America making a statement like that is really tarnishing our reputation. One of the sectors with potential in this country is tourism, and I fear it will create a negative image of my country.
