    Well I pulled the trigger. Start pulling with Dynamic on the 15th of March. Picked up a beast. 2008 F450 with 167,000 miles. Has mudflaps, trailer mirrors, gooseneck ball.
    Just driving from OKC. Stopped in Osceola IA at the Mexican Restaurant on the north side just west of HyVee for a meal.

      I actually use the Mexican restaurant to tell people where the gym is at times! Just right across the street! If you’re in there again, I love the ala cart grilled chicken with a side of onions, cilantro, and green salsa to add on once it comes out!!

    I love the fact that you are encouraging folks to have a breakdown/emergency fund. As stated it is a necessary to be ready for a rainy day in any business. That being said I think discussing net $ after (fuel + emergency fund) is a bit misleading. Just as it is necessary to account for fuel and breakdowns you also must account for every other expenses that will be encountered before you talk about "net" profits (money in your pocket). If you don't account for all expenses the ones you leave out go "through" your pocket, not in it. Taking some from your pocket and some from your gross revenue makes those lines blurry. For example, depreciation is a huge factor and could cost more than breakdowns.. Regardless of whether you own a new or used truck each mile you put on it lowers its value and puts it closer to the grave. You will rack up a lot of miles doing this so money from each load "must" be set aside towards your next truck (not if but when you will need it). So in addition to your payment I would suggest saving towards your next vehicle. Your depreciation will be higher and emergency fund less if you have a newer vehicle. Your emergency fund needs to be higher and your depreciation less on a older vehicle. Either way it's important to consider both for long term success. Also regular "standard" maintenance must to be factored in befor discussing "net". Standard maintenance is predictable, for example: Every 150,000 miles (10 oil changes, 6 fuel filter changes, 1.5 sets of tires, 1-2 sets of brakes, 1 set of bearings. 1 set shocks, etc.). These costs are real, can be predicted, and must be accounted for. Throwing numbers around like (75K part time/year) may get your channel views but is misleading. Call me a negative old fart if that fits your narrative but I am only stating this so new guys, entering this business, have realistic expectations. RV transport is an honest living and you can be successful if you are disciplined and run a tight ship. So don't be discouraged but take into consideration "all" of your expenses, get a good accountant (uncle sam needs his too), have realistic expectations, work hard and smart, treat it like a business, and you can succeed.

    • @WeekendTruckin
      @WeekendTruckin  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! And as much as I appreciate the feedback (and insight on known maintenance expenses- I like the breakdown of how you listed them!!!) The goal of the video was to show people what type of money you CAN/WILL have in your pocket. It's 60K-ish if you don't add in the maintenance funds in terms of money in pocket.
      So yes, there will be other expenses you experience but what if your truck is paid off... What if you have a brand new truck payment or lease? This video allows you to see the real money that you can put in your pocket after fuel, which if not paid during the run the truck doesn't move and you don't get your final settlement pay, and then you're able to assess your situation to see if it'll work for you!
      I get a little fed up with the OTR truck drivers who discourage people from getting into RV Transport because of their either, misinformed view of the gig, or hatred for the guys out on the road that aren't in a big rig.
      Again, I appreciate the comment! Thank you!

      I think you take your gross pay from your RV company or 1099........deduct all fuel.....deduct all maintenance including new tires and more........deduct $50 per day for food when on the road.....deduct showers, hotels or costs to stay at TA or other.......deduct phone and other equipment expenses like printer and paper .........deduct insurance and healthcare..........and that will be your net taxable income?
      Also if you deduct your truck........I believe you can either deduct the total costs the first year......or amortize it out over 3 years or more. My CPA said a lot of people do it all in the first year and then are shocked by their taxes the next year as they didn't plan for that deduction being gone.

      If we were talking true business and not self employment/contractor work, I’d break things down differently but this just isn’t that in my eyes from my business experiences. The goal was to show people what you can actually put in your pocket with RV transport.
      Your bills, some being directly tied to your self employment gig and some being a mix of this and personal use may still be a write off in terms of “business expenses”. I’ve mentioned my payments in almost all videos when talking about money/expenses.

    I'm looking to get into this. But I'm nervous I see that this is a newer video so that helps. I'm on a couple Facebook sites and see a lot of people selling trucks and trailers getting out of it because of slow down of the business do you see this?. I also want to have a life I'm working 50+ hours a week and should be enjoying retirement but can't. I don't want to live paycheck to paycheck anymore. I love your videos and thank you for your honesty.

    • @WeekendTruckin
      @WeekendTruckin  2 года назад

      Hey Scott! I'm in those same groups and see alot of 50, 60, and 70k pickup trucks for sale too. You can make money with a newer truck, for sure- but you cross the line of the freedom of running your own schedule when you want and need to run to make your $1,000/month truck payment plus your $400-500/month insurance because you have the totaled/payout value of the truck at a high number...
      There's seasons of slow times in the industry for sure, but you're typically always able to stay business and if you're treating it like a business opposed of a job, you have money in your maintenance account set aside for breakdowns and maintenance but also for when you're not able to get the longer hauls you like when it gets slow for the few weeks or so it does in the summers!
      The numbers in this video are still doable if you're running say 4-5 days a week in terms of take-home money. The increase price of fuel and the rates not matching that % increase has taken about 5% or so of profits from each trip from my weekly calculations!
      I hope this helps!!!

You can only drive 10 hours before you have to take a break, right? Do you deliver to CA--that alone is 24+ hours. Are you including dead-head hours? Sorry--I'm a bit confused. I’ve played around with booking a trip down to FL or TX but then I look at the miles needed to get home and just never book. I look for SD, CO, NE and western Iowa runs! And it’s back late Friday or sometimes just depending on how things are going, I’ll take my time, sleep over somewhere Friday night and get home early Saturday.

    People, listen to this guy... He's right, there is money to be made... I am going to try to elaborate briefly on a couple of points, and even add some of my own.... You do not need a brand new truck... When I got into this business, I bought a $20,000 truck,.. it cost probably three times that when it was new... Let somebody else take that huge depreciation loss.. huge loss.... I put 190,000 miles on that truck in one year, and outside of regular maintenance, I probably spent another $4,000 in repairs,.. no big deal... I generally drove 5 days a week, and was always home Friday night Saturday Sunday and then out Monday morning, and I probably averaged about twice the amount of money that this gentleman averaged..... Put 10% of your earnings into a special fund for maintenance... If you can put more, put more in there.... Did you get to the point where you have enough in there to pay your $20,000 truck off early, pay it off..... By yourself a L-shaped 100 gallon auxiliary fuel tank, or something similar... That way you can fuel up a whole lot in the cheap States, and you might be able to make it through all the expensive States and then back to the cheap States.... That extra fuel tank could save you $30 a week easy.... Pulling campers with a pickup truck is the least lucrative way to go about that business, and the least comfortable in terms of sleeping arrangements... But even though it is the least lucrative way to go about it, it is still very easy to make decent money... If you have a CDL, you could make a lot more money by pulling two or three campers at a time and hauling one or two or three cars back, and you have a lot better sleeping arrangement.... And for the price of a brand new pickup truck, you can get a really nice semi,... You can get a semi that will do the job for 20,000 bucks as well.... Some companies that you lease on with will also let you call two or three campers with a pickup truck and a trailer, but that is harder on your pickup truck, but that is an option as well.... And people, what this guy didn't tell you, is that there are some companies out there that will let you drive brand new motorhomes to the dealer, you just have to find your way back.. you either fly back, or you pull a little car behind you... So if you don't have the means to go out and buy a $20,000 pickup truck or semi, you could still get into this business, with very very little expense up front.. I could answer many more questions if anybody was interested....

      I think I remembering hearing something along the lines of CDL hauls are at least .10/mile more.
      They just restructured their rates to factor region, weight and maybe another thing or two. South and east trips are less than west trips by maybe .20/mile. Typically around $1.60 is a non CDL trip out west!

      So that was the first question I had when talking to two fellow business owners that live in the same town I’m in who have been doing this for going on two years. Before I got out my question on what they hold back as we’re 1099ed one mentioned how with the standard deductions of the industry and how we’re positioned in it you won’t be paying taxes on the earnings made. Another mentioned how after a full year of just hauling campers that he made out with a refund after it was all said and done for the year.
      Obviously this is not me giving advice, etc. etc.

      I am not doing this yet so I can't say for sure, however I've got a friend doing it who is paying substantial taxes and I've already talked to my future CPA who says you can deduct all the things I mentioned in a thread above and you should pay quarterly IRS, State and possibly City taxes as we all pay taxes in the end.
      I could certainly be wrong, but I'm going to pay Quarterly taxes and not fall behind on the taxes.
