    Kew Lunatic Asylum is a decommissioned psychiatric hospital located between Princess Street and Yarra Boulevard in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Operational from 1871 to 1988, Kew was one of the largest asylums ever built in Australia. Later known as Willsmere, the complex of buildings were constructed between 1856 and 1872 to the design of architects G.W. Vivian and Frederick Kawerau of the Victorian Public Works Office to house the growing number of "lunatics", "inebriates", and "idiots" in the Colony of Victoria.
    The first purpose built asylum in the Colony of Victoria, Kew Asylum was also larger and more expensive than its sister asylums at Ararat (Aradale) and Beechworth (Mayday Hills). The buildings are typical examples of French Second Empire and Italianate styles which were popular in Victorian Melbourne. Its design was based on contemporary English barracks-style models of asylum planning, such as Colney Hatch. The E-shaped complex of buildings was designed to be elegant, beautiful, yet substantial, and to be viewed as "a magnificent asylum for the insane" with the aim of portraying Melbourne as a civilised and benevolent city whilst avoiding the jail-like appearance of other asylums. These aims were furthered by the use of low Ha-Ha walls and extensively landscaped grounds. Long considered of cultural and historic significance to Melbourne, Kew Asylum and its complex of buildings were registered on the Register of the National Estate in March 1978.
    Despite initial grand plans and ideals, Kew Asylum had a difficult and chequered history contributing to several inquiries throughout its 117 years of operation, including a Royal Commission. Overcrowding, mismanagement, lack of resources, poor sanitation and disease were common criticisms during the asylum's first five decades. Out-dated facilities and institutionalisation were criticisms of Kew's later period.
    Kew continued to operate throughout the 20th century as a "Hospital for the Insane", "Mental Hospital", or "Psychiatric Hospital", treating acute, long-term and geriatric patients until it closed in December 1988. The main building and surrounding grounds were sold by the State Government in the 1980s and were redeveloped as residential properties while retaining heritage listing.

      @@CowboyJojosAdventures Some cats just look like that lol. People too! There was an old asylum near me, all that's left is the foundation and a fruit orchard. People have written that in the evenings the patients would sing as part of therapy, always thought that would make a creepy story.

    • @CowboyJojosAdventures
      @CowboyJojosAdventures  3 года назад +1

      @@Dagonhills that’s very true 😂 I did a night tour of the Asylum in Beechworth many years ago and those stories were scary. But to think that you commit your wife into an asylum and get a Doctor to state she was insane was a crime in itself. Could you imagine going in never to be released. The experiments and treatments in the early days would have been horrific.

    • @Dagonhills
      @Dagonhills 3 года назад +1

      @@CowboyJojosAdventures I've seen that in movies and books and it terrifies me, to be committed. The actual ill patients can be extremely violent. I had a cleaning room separate and alone in the yard and no ones going there after 5pm 6pm. Its getting unusually cold time to time for few minutes sometimes and heard someone knocking to the window. I came out and checked. no one was there. then i went back to the cleaning room and heard it again. It’s all before i know that this place is crazy. After two knocks i felt something wrong so i left the room and went to the residence building. Then i heard the story from my manager. I never went there after 5pm. And there are few more places that go crazy. I didn’t work there for more than 2 months.

      Our pleasure! That putty cat was very friendly. Yes, they have presented the grounds really well and the appartments are well appointed. I have a nephew living in one. I didn't wish to film inside his place for privacy reasons. Glad you enjoyed the tour Leah. have a wonderful week.

    I played at Kew cottages on the trampolines, a guy who’s Nick name was cookie used to shoot you with his comb

      Some individuals were pretty scary cos they chase you n man did u run when they did, was in the day when the females n men were segregated by the low fenced off yards There was some pretty horrific sight, my gf father was a minister there I think and had lodgings there surname was Brassington, a friends sister in law worked in the Willsmetd section a lot where in straight jackets

    they were all very nasty sadistic places , where patients were beaten , raped, boys and girls, electric shock treatment and doped to the eyeballs , also lobotomies were carried out as experiments to , kids got sent to those places as young as 6 or under for things like ADHD, Epilepsy , etc etc and were imprisoned in them for their whole lives , i presume there is a book on the beechworth 1 and the kew 1 , i have the ararat book [history] of it and its horrible so they would all be run the same way , been thoough the kew 1 many yrs ago as i knew a patient there who went in as a 20 yr old girl beautiful looking young lady for depression etc ,within 2 yrs her skin had changed to a blue color due to high meds , elec shock treatment etc she spent 30 yrs in kew and only got out when they closed the joints , they should have never allowed them to be developed , they should have stayed the way there were so future generations could see and feel the despair , cheers
