Our homes are more than merely containers for living. When we combine meaningful objects, gathered thoughtfully over time, a room, a house, or a garden becomes a space for shared memories - past, present, and future - and a comforting sanctuary from the busyness of the outside world.
A Home of One’s Own: Summer at TJC brings together objects, collections, and design inspirations that have developed over many years, but continue to resonate today. Visitors to our historic East Melbourne townhouse, Fairhall, will discover antiques and much-loved decorative pieces that draw on iconic designs of the past, combined to create an inviting, intimate, and timeless expression of ‘home’.
This special re-arrangement is inspired by a 2008 exhibition at The Johnston Collection, curated by renowned Melbourne-based interior designer, Robert Thomson, formerly a Director at design firm Riddell Marly. During the last ten years of his life, William Johnston (1911-1986) entrusted Robert to undertake special projects at Fairhall, and Robert is now a valued Ambassador of The Johnston Collection (TJC).
Over the last fifteen years, The Johnston Collection has acquired many more exquisite objects. Some of these have been incorporated into this rearrangement, which references Robert’s design philosophy and expert ‘eye’ for creating comfortable and inviting spaces with timeless appeal. Visitors will experience how fine and decorative artworks from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries can be enjoyed in today’s homes, and how they create comfortable, liveable, individual spaces that speak to elegance, re-use and sustainability.

is this a house or a museum? very beautiful but i did find the large foot stickers/pads all over the floor rather distracting!
We're a museum in Melbourne, Australia! The footprint stickers helped us with social distancing during the pandemic but we're glad they're gone now!
Qualche pezzetto e veramente bello e antico l effetto generale e sicuramente costoso e di gusto e certo tutto e molto bene ambientato e corredato ma fa un po l effetto di un museo . Pemsk amche chd sia un incubo vivere in un biente del genere anche petche unk cerca in cas3 non dolo belkezze cromatichd ed estetiche ma anxhd odori energie sensazioni e cortenti e presenze familiari. Sicuramentd deve essere un incubo tenere puliti ambidnti del generd penso solo alla polvere. E poi quando etk giovane antiquariato arredamento e case e collezionismo mi piacevank moltissimo compravk riviste etc e mi piaceva vositard mercatinj. Negozi mostre musei ingiro per il mondo visitare case i primi tempi con mik marito ci tenevo alla casa un minimo dopo il matrimonio no non me ne e fregato pij niente. Anche perche le ca3 per me erano rilevanti perchd inquelle case inckntravo xerte persone e si facevano certe convetsazionj no i pasti non sono mai stati cose rilevanti nelle vwlle cae visitate non sempre mangiavi o bevevi anzj prsticamenrd msj si parlava xk versava di tzntisdkmj argomenti politica fatyi personali attualita problemi generali cultura umanistica scientigiva religione spiritualita tante cose si parlava di smici quslcuno tj offrivs il the qualcunk il caffe qualcunk lo sciroppo qualcuno il vermouth. Difgicilmente si cenava o paranzava o si faceva colazione mangiare mangiavk a casa provvedeva zia e manfiard ho srmpre mangiato daj parenti o al ristorante e in giro difgicilmente da amici o conoscenti anche s3 compagni di scuola e anche con estranei difgicilmente si andava a pranzo o cena anche fuori cioe in ristorznti o altro. Come facevano z piacenza in giro per trattorie e ristoranti sia quelli delle parrocchie che i sessantotyini. Anchd a roma neanche nei giri di sinistra si mangiava. E venuto col arci gola prjma nessunk tranne mia zia mariuccia e carmacina e veronelli pensava alla cucinaMio padre forse xhe e sempre statk v8ziato da nonna un buon gustaio. Zia si e sempre rifiutata dj fare la schiava ai fornelli e pure margheti5a ha rinunciato al matrimonio alka casa al fidanzato e ai figli d alla famiglia perche non lr potevs pagare con lo stpendio fi ufgicislr d3lla regiz marina la cuoca w avrebbw dovuto cucinare lei e allira ha detto sto cin mamma e papa e mi p8glio una srconda laurea e m7 defico all antrop9sofia e alla putttura e papa mj paga la xameriera. Funny you mention antique shops - our benefactor Mr William Robert Johnston was a prominent Melbourne-born antique dealer!
Comunque devo dire carina la casa ma oggi come oggi cerco le persone cioe mi inyeressa la persona sia per mot8vi di affezione cioe chw voglio bene a questa persona dia per altri morivi inyeressi intellettuali culturali o politicj chissa sociali o spirutuali o altri motivi puo anche darsi che va8 perche vuo8 aiutarw qualcuno che puo anche non essere uno stretto vexchio amico o parente ma qualcuno magarj anche sconosciuto ma che 8ndopendentemente dalla sua xondizione econom8ca 9 eredita di mobilio senti di volere sostenere. Puo durare a volte una nuova amicixia tutta la vita e takckltz puo finire in due giorni. I mot9vo pet cui le persone s7 prendono e lasciano non solo affettivamente e a3ntimentalmente mw anch3 in tutte le altre interazionj sonk infiniti. Infiniti i politica come in amicizie come in professio e e tante cose.
