Year 24 and what you are describing is exactly what I am dealing with with my first graders this year. There was no honeymoon period this year and I feel I am teaching pre-K… just keeping it real😢. When will the Covid excuse be over and when will parents take on the burden and responsibility of what they need to do to parent and raise their own children? I want to still love my job and craft, but this year (only 4 weeks in) has been so challenging. Pray for all teachers

Oh Girl...YES! this is what is making me crazy...something has got to give. Teachers are expected to take on an enormous job of not only teaching our subjects and curriculum...but being the discipline, the patience, the love, and the caretakers...which should be happening at home. God forbid if we are not perfect and don't have it all together all the time...am I right? It's been a hard few years. The end is coming for you though...I am having my first "normal" year since 2020. Parents and kids seem normal at last. The pandemic took its toll to be sure...but parenting should not have changed. My kids were older, so I guess I don't know what it was like to have little ones at home while trying to work via zoom...there should be a national discussion about how to help all parities involved...especially the kids.

I think this is a good lesson in how even after many years of experience and no matter the knowledge we hold… we have to be open to challenges in a way that we can adapt and look through the eyes of the children we are working with.
Taking a moment to identify and understand the needs of each child in ways that make us reflect on our own selves.
Behaviors are all a form of communication - these children are saying something but are unable to communicate it.
Stepping back and really taking a look at how things are running - what is and isn’t working.. taking the needs of yourself and the children into consideration.
Reminding yourself that they are new to all of this and need to be provided some grace.

You completely described my year last year. One note from my coach is that instead of saying “I love how so and so is sitting quietly” you can just simply narrate “so and so is sitting quietly”. This takes the emphasis off of the teacher and simply describes good behavior. I find it less draining when having to say something for each and every child. Keep it up! You’re doing good work and the Lord sees your good deeds! Blessings from Arizona.

This is my 2nd year of teaching PreK, and I about fell off my chair with excitement when you described what happened to your kids when you gave one a compliment, and then the others all said, "What about me? What about me?" This is SO MUCH my class! They are all so needy! Because it's only my 2nd year, I figured it's because I'm so new.
Last year was difficult too, and a lot of it was because I was brand new, but a lot of it was because that class was needy as well, just in a bit different way. I feel like we are getting more and more kids with family traumas, as well. It's so hard to give that much attention to children who crave it, and absolutely NEED it.
Anyway, thanks for this. You have helped my confidence immensely! And like you, I do truly love my kids. I just need to get o the place where I don't feel like I'm in survival mode all the time.

The counselors do not have any advice. I am at the end of my rope. When a child runs around, spits, kicks, will not stay in the quiet corner, shoves toys to the floor is always unhappy, hits and grabs other children. I am doing my best to stay calm. Ps. The story you told about the little girl who didn’t want to climb up the stairs, really resonated with me. I do this all the time. Some kids need hugs and love and attention and compassion more than others. Often times kids don’t throw as many fits or get as frustrated and upset if they feel like you understand what they’re saying and like you care And are there to help them through rough times. I have also noticed that this particular crazy group of kids I have right now tell me that they miss their parents way more than other kids have ever told me before in any other school or class that I have worked in. I’m thinking that again, the pandemic may have had a part in that as well.

Thank you for sharing your story.. I think it happens to all teachers at some point in thier career! I have been a pre k special needs teacher for 46 years and have had some tough years. After covid I went to part time and began mentoring new teachers. It has been very fulfilling! This fall one of our teachers that I mentor took a job in a district. As staffing is an issue in our area I volunteered to take his class for a few months. What a class! It is an integrated head start class. 12 head start students, and my 8 1:1 Special needs students. 20 -2,3,4 year olds! And the typical students have more behaviors than my sp ed class. The headstart teacher has years of experience also. Circle and transitions are the most difficult. I have been doing every trick I know. But as you said, positive attention, structure, rules and patience is the key.
We will get there! This too shall pass! Again thanks for sharing . It helps so much to know others have the same issues.

There are some teachers that are very good but maybe students need different things just keep on trying different methods 😊, we just need ways to keep them engaged and if we work with things that they enjoy it is easier. For example teaching emotions with cartoons that are in fashion etc

I would have children's to share something special about their weekend, and play my guitar signs songs and movement, this strategies helps young preschoolers to develop their large muscle, skills a sense of rhythm and, encourages interactions with their teachers and friends in a clam and fun loving environment. I have been a Preschool Teacher for thirty years It can be a challenging situation. What help me was I always reaearching and reading the last child development, parenting and early childhood literature and share my knowledge with my colleagues and parents through informal discussion and roud table conversation as well as professional development opportunities. Teachers and parent working to gather to support young children's development.

I think we are on the same page...trust me...I did it ALL with that class, and the kindergarten teachers are trying everything again this year. They were and continue to be a tough group. Tried and true methods had no effect. They will remain the most difficult group I've had to deal with to this point. I am grateful I had that humbling year...I appreciate this year's group so much more, and I learned so much.

One of my coworkers brought that up to the preschool Director at our last staff meeting. She said today was a perfect example of why we need a spring break and a winter break in the summer break. We only ever have major holidays off and for Christmas and Thanksgiving we get two or three days off, but that’s it.
Unless we choose to take days off, randomly throughout the year without pay, or if we use our sick leave pay, which seems to accumulate at a snails pace.

I am not an educator, but it is wonderful to hear and read the comments from the teachers perspective. Again, Im not an educator but it seems that nurses, social workers and teachers (pre-k) are taxed and drained and exasperated. Anybody would dealing humans. It's not these little humans are "needy" , no, they actually NEED guidance just patients NEED care and the more vulnerable NEED help. Also, when dealing with a Group of people, particularly little ones, you should already accept that its going to be taxing mentally and emotionally, thats a given, it always surprises me when teachers want miracles or wish it was easier, no you are on the front lines, just accept it. What's more important is Learning ways To COPE with the mental drain so you can have energy for your day and yourself. Sadly that is not taught in school. I do not understand ny kids can't have water during circle time, it seems so petty and minor , and controlling, who cares, its not wine! Also teachers spend more time with kids than the parents do , specially if the parents are divorced! Also that is another issue. 2 parents 2 systems, 2 step-parents , different routines , foods etc. At the end of the day don't rely on the parents too much because its YOUR time when they are misbehaving in front of you, children behave differently in school and at home. basically, don't take to personal, you chose this field, so now you are in it so find ways to COPE for YOU to stay sane , support group, therapy etc.

hey...thanks for your insightful comments. It is clear from your comment that you are not in education. I can tell you that I AM an educator and have been for over 15 years...I cope very well, and this year I am speaking of was particularly difficult. I was constantly talking to other teachers, trying new strategies, and doing my job (that I LOVE) to the best of my ability. I knew that by making this video I would help a lot of teachers to see that they are not alone when they have that one really difficult group of kids that are all wonderful on their own, but together...they sometimes make a rough group. My goal is to show all teachers, that even those with loads of education, experience, awards, and have always been excellent at classroom management can have a rough year and have to do a ton of pivoting to try and make things work with that group. I am REAL. Yes, these little humans were especially needy...I have had 14 other groups of 18 humans of that age that did not need half the attention that group needed. I know my job, I am excellent at my job, and i love the kids I work with ....even when they are being difficult. They get all my love, patience, acceptance, and I will do anything to make their lives better and their days happier. Kids are usually MUCH worse for parents than teachers...if you were in education, you would know that. Part of educating young children is teaching them that there are simple rules to every part of the day. Having one 10-20 minute period where they cannot get up to get water is just fine, they are not dehydrated. It is not controlling, it is part of helping children learn this thing called " self regulation", and to learn that there are certain procedures to everything in life. Everything is done in a kids and gentle way with positive reinforcement etc. It is so enlightening when people with no experience in education think they can judge teachers or tell them how to do their jobs. Even if it is kindly meant...walk a mile in a teacher's shoes before giving them any advice. Educate yourself first.

That sounds exactly like last year for me. I felt the same way and it was so perplexing. Remember the kids you have now were at a crucial age in their development during the COVID lockdown. I honestly think this group will be really difficult all the way through their school years. Routines were interrupted, they did not get the attention they needed from parents who may have been home working and could not give it. There are so many things about this group that will be difficult for every teacher they have. I hate to say this...but hang in there. I promise next year will be so much better. The end of the year will come eventually!

Just started at a new center with a three year old class. It's been such a rough year. My co-teacher and I have had the kids spitting on us, hitting us, kicking us. We have major meltdown where a child rips things off the walls, attacks nearby children, tries to knock over shelves and kick down the walls. I've never seen a class like this. It's been so rough and it's getting hard to be excited about going to work. As long as they have one on one attention they are fine, but we can't give one on one to every child for 9 hours a day. Any suggestions would be wonderful, thank you.

I'm in the same boat! Can you lean on your admin? is there any way to get another helper in the room? I'm assuming the answers to those questions is "no". It is exhausting when you feel like you are putting gout fires all day. It feels really defeating too. I don't have all the answers, and I feel your pain. Hitting and spitting on the teachers is not okay! I would have individual meetings with some of the parents and be straight with them. No one wants a disrespectful child...especially one that hits and spits! Don't be accusatory, ask the parents what they do at home when their child exhibits this kind of behavior. Tell them you want to use the same words the child hears at home so you can partner with the parents to help the child work through this behavior. Also remember that there might need to be a LOT of modeling appropriate behaviors as well....I know this is not much help, I'd love to help more.
What size is your class? do you have the kids all day? do you have a lot of unstructured time? so many questions... If you want to email me at teachprek101@gmail.com I'd be happy to help you with some strategies.

I had the same experience last Year, couldn't believe nothing really mattered to those children. Are you alone with 16? I think that's not a good ratio. When i had another teacher helping and was able to work with them in small groups and having different stations, that's what worked.

I am not alone , I have a full time aide, and I had another aide who was with me 2-3 days a week as well...finally, my admin listened and I had another aide for that class so that there were always two of us. I'm VERY aware of appropriate ratios...no way would I take this on alone! The schools who expect that of preschool teachers are insane! I'd love it if the admin at hose schools had to try to do it all themselves for a week...they would want an aide after an hour...plus, it isn't safe.
Those kids are now in kindergarten and the teachers are exhausted every day...just like I was...and I noticed their half time aides went to full time right away! I learned so much from those kids...so, so much!

How do you get parent help with students without saying the wrong thing??

    • @teachpre-k101
      @teachpre-k101  Год назад +1

I just had conferences with the parents of this class. The way I normally handle bringing up difficult behaviors with parents is to mention all the positives and strengths I can about the child first...then I will site a few instances of difficult behavior and ask how similar things are handled at home. I ask what words the parents use when confronted with a similar situation ...so that I can use the same phrasing and provide a consistent message...or at least that is what I say. A lot of times it is a fishing expedition to see if the parents have rules for the child and how they handle problems at home. If you are seeing behavior issues, its more likely than not that it is happening with more frequency and to a more intense level in the home. This will usually open a dialogue with the parents not feeling attacked, and realizing that I am on their side and want to work with them to help their child. It is a delicate little dance that takes a while to perfect , but if it is genuine, it will come across that way and actually go far to help everyone involved. If they claim that their child is not exhibiting difficult behaviors at home, it opens you up to ask how they would LIKE those instances to be handled at school and also ask for help from the parents. I don't completely believe the parents when they say they don't see those behaviors, but I respect what they say and understand that they may have a different perspective on the behaviors in question. What I see and experience as a difficulty may have just become an accepted part of daily life for the child's family. It is hard, and sometimes your efforts will fall flat. Be willing to accept that and do your best...but keep dialogue open with the parents and document what is going on so you have a record if things escalate at any point.
      I hope that helps!

    • @teachpre-k101

honestly, I think this group of kids was at the worst stage of development to be subjected to a lockdown like we had with CVID. Their parents were home...but they were working and couldn't give them attention. They couldn't go to daycare or grandmas to socialize, the parents couldn't have family or friends over for even more socialization...they all needed so much attention. I don't feel like most 3-5 year olds spend too much time online...but yes, some do. It's like TV was when my kids were growing up...sometimes I needed them to watch a video to get dinner made or something else done. I used it sparingly and only when I really needed a break...hopefully that is all that is happening now, but some kids have an ipad in their car seat and know how to turn it on and find their shows or games. Kids need their parents and caregivers to get them playing and having fun without a screen...screens will take over their lives soon enough. More play, more play, more play!
