- the Dolly Zoom Effect is a dramatic Effect first seen in the 1958 Hirtchcock movie: 'Vertigo'
It's simple and straightforward to produce the Dolly Zoom Effect using DJI Waypoints with a drone such as the Mini 4 Pro, Air 3 or any of the Mavic 3 drones from DJI.
This video is a step by step, simple and easy to follow tutorial on how to create the Dolly Zoom Effect Using DJI Waypoints.

great effect!
Thanks!
Good video and tutorial Robert. The dolly effect is a great skill to have especially for the more spooky type videos. What monument is that Robert. 🙂
It's a monument to some local covenanters. It's at the bottom of the road up to the Hare hill Windfarm
@@WindsweptRobert Thank you Robert. Got It
thanks man! id give you some really good weed if i could :D
I don't smoke I'm afraid.
no need to be afraid :D@@WindsweptRobert
That's the kind of tip I love : no "what's up guys", no blabla, just a pure and neat explanation on how to do it. One thing, you make it look simple but it's not that easy keeping the subject centered and of the same size. Thanks a 1001.
Thanks :)
You're on point with your instructions. Thanks for this lovely tutorial !
Glad it was helpful! :)
Nice tip...I bet you can use this dolly effect when circling a POI as well. I have this lighthouse I might want to try it on. I think this would look sick at 70mm. Nice job here bringing this to out attention. Now I have another one for ya...can you use waypoints to fly backwards and record what you see. As you know, flying backwards is sort of dangerous but if you can program this using waypoint...the flying danger goes away but the drama stays.
Flying backwards can produce some fantastic results. Here's a video where I do this a number of times using manual flight : ruclips.net/video/Uxo1iO-NMpo/видео.html
very nice video! question if you don't mind. Does global speed matter for dolly zoom? How do you decide the speed? thank you
I would say that the speed is a personal choice. It won't change the effect itself, but it will have a different emotional impact.
when i try to zoom, it says cannot zoom in current recording format.. any idea why ?
Give us some details about your recording and maybe we can pinpoint the issue :)
When will your home planned waypoint mission be ready Robert? Beautiful locations by the way - which part of Scotland is it?
I'll get to it asap - been busy with work and grandson! ;)
I have done this effect but slightly different. I fly close to the subject and set waypoint 1 then fly back about 10 metres then set waypoint 2. The zoom is set at 1x at waypoint 1 automatically so I go into waypoint 2 and set the zoom to 4x.
Aye, that's a similar but other way to do it :)
Awesome demo, I was wondering could you not use a POI point to make sure it is pointing at the same spot? I will give this a try myself!
Aye, it can be done using a POI. In this video, I wanted to show the simplest way I could find of achieving the dolly zoom effect :)
I almost thought you were talking about a country star named Dolly with large mountains.
Well, she does! ;)
cheers boab!
Thank you so much , you get a sub from me , I have no experience at all with these DJI Pro 4's , I just got it a few weeks ago , subbed you because I like your down to earth gentle way of explaining things
God bless you from David in North wales near Llangollen 🙂Glad to be onboard your channel 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to comment, David (and to sub!). I hope you find plenty of interesting content here :)
@@WindsweptRobert Thanks for the warm welcome Robert , pleasure to sub , Im sure there will be loads here for sure thank you so much 🙂
David
Great video! Just subbed and appreciate you getting right to the point. Perfect!
Thanks for the sub!
@@WindsweptRobert sure thing..in fact, I practiced today..I need more practice but getting better.
Cool shot! I just got an Air 3 and you’ve inspired me to try this. Thanks for sharing this.
nice turtorial!:) love it thanks
You're welcome!
Hi,
Can it be done on the Mini 3 Pro?
Only if you have a RC Pro and the Dronelink app.
Any idea how to do a dolly Zoom hyperlapse
Awesome demonstration Robert! Very cool function to automate that process! Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Waypoints is such a powerful tool for DJI drones. There's so many creative things you can do with it. Thank you for explaining the dolly zoom using them, very informative video.
Absolutely!
This is brilliant yet simple. I'll be trying this next time I'm out with the Air 3
Brilliant... Ive been trying to do this effect by hand, and failing badly!!! haha
Fantastic tip, thank you for this.
Happy to help!
@@WindsweptRobert Hi Robert, I tried this before and it didnt work... When I went to the second waypoint and zoomed in, I kept getting an error message saying: ""Zoom not available in this mode".... Any idea's? I couldnt work it out??
What mode is it referring to?
@@WindsweptRobert I don'y know, I was just recording video and set the way points...but, when doing the second way point with the zoom, I got that message, I was simply recording in video mode... I'll watch your video again and try again. Thanks
I don't know what's causing it not work tbh...hate to say it, but I suspect user error...no offence :/
I have a terribly simple question to ask
Say I got the mavic 3 pro a d am shooting a normal 4k or even 1080p
While shooting thr video how far can I zoom ?? 3x ? 7x ? More ??
The telephoto lens is a 7 times lens, but you can digitally zoom in to X25 or 35 - can't remember which
I have tried dolly zooming with limited success with the Mini 2. I'm going to try using a two waypoint mission, so I'll only have to adjust the limited zoon that the Mini 2 has. I must admit I never thought to try that. Thanks again Robert.
I'm sure it'll work, Pete! :)
Thank you, that was informative, enjoyable, and you did it showed it without taking up much of my time.👍
Glad it was helpful!
Aww thanks pal - that’s a good one!
Thanks Robert!
Brilliant!
Nice! Thanks for explaining 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Very interesting, thanks.
Very welcome
NIce! Thanks for taking the time to explain this for us. I have tried this a few times, I just need to find the right subject and background!
Aye, the right subject makes this work. I think I actually found a great subject when I was out for a walk with my grandson today. I'll see if I can post a pic in the community section :)
Now Mr. Windswept I have an issue with this last posting. As your are a good representative for Scotland and take time out to help others when In need etc I feel the use of the word "Dolly" Rather Daft and No very Scottish or flattering 😮. I believe a word for this should be put to a vote on the channel👍. My suggestion if you choice to use it is. Doing a Kenny. As you can see I took long and hard to think of a suggestion 😊
