Woodturning a Bowl with Wings (a Square Bowl)

- Wood turning a square bowl with wings. I make this pretty bowl from Guanacaste, a wood I’ve never used before. Thanks for watching!
While making this, I mostly use a 5/8 bowl gouge, but also a ¼ inch parting tool and a heavy round nose scraper. This winged bowl is then sanded up to 1000 grit and finished with walnut oil and shellac.

Turning the invisible!
How absolutely impressive!
It turned out gorgeous.
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
What a gorgeous bowl - understatement, of course. The corners make such an appealing contrast to the circle. You have a great eye.
Once again, Rod picks out an outstanding piece of wood and produces an even more outstanding bowl with wings with very beautiful grain to it. Nothing diabolical about that at all. Mandy made a marine cry, what a woman :-)
Thank you very much! Onions, I swear it was onions... 😊
My grandfather had a knack for being able to find unique things at garage sales and auctions. One time, he came home with a bowl that I now, forty-some odd years later, have a name for the wood. Amazing! Nice job on this one! 💗
Wow! - -The grain of that wood is really beautiful! Very nice work!
You've been added to my prayer list. May ALL your needs b e met in Jesus's Name. Amen
I started woodworking when I was in shop class in high school and have enjoyed it ever since, and I'm 65. I enjoy your videos and your comments. Semper Fi.
Thanks so much! I had shop class in middle school and all I can remember is Mr. Short and his skill at swinging the paddle.....lol We were well behaved...mostly
@@RHumphrey That's right Rod we're cut from a different cloth.
Respect our elders, play outside, build things, fish, hunt, grew up on meat & potatoes, & real milk....Not Soy like these Nancy Boiz that can't figure out there own gender.
The world has become a sick place.
Gorgeous bowl. I am a seventy eight year old new wood turner, just under a year, and I can only dream of doing beautiful work like that. I do it mainly as a hobby and absolutely love it. Watching "The Rebel Turner" got me interested in wood turning although I used to watch daddy turn wood when I was growing up. Your work is beautiful and I love your video's. God Bless.
Before I finish watching the video, let me say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! My nephew is a Marine, BTW.
I love your work.. You have a real affinity with wood and your passion shows through to the end. I enjoy your narration over the top as I can hear your thoughts as you create. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Lovely, lovely grain in that piece and the bowl is as beautiful as it's unusual. Fascinating... thank you for sharing
Thank you soo very much for your peaceful and relaxing videos and voice.
I am autistic and they give me the much needed peace of mind in this extremely busy world. On top of that I admire your craftsmen ship tremendously. So thanks in a lot of ways.
My husband came home feeling a bit down and coming down with something. I streamed this to make him feel better... success! Always inspiring, thank you.
Semper Fi!
Thank you so much! I hope he's feeling much better now!
It never gets old watching a master at his craft. I'm very blessed by your passion and skill. My family doesn't have the chance to see my skills in action and I work hard to teach them about a spirit of excellence. You help me in that endeavor, thank you. On a side note,I love Chesty! Chesty Pullar is one of my great uncles and it's so nice to see his honor honored. I bless you to be fruitful and multiply in every way every day in Jesus name, amen.
Thank you for such a beautiful comment!!! That spirit of excellence is so worthy of teaching, thank you for that. God Bless you, and God bless Chesty! Semper Fi
Amazing art work!
Thanks for your hard work and thanks for speaking and not playing some weird music :)
Amazing work. I didn't expect the color to change the way it did in the light. Must say that hearing you ask for prayer for mandy was the deciding factor on subscribing. Love your work. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. Semper Fi
Awesome square bowl. That wood is really nice. Prayers going out for Mandy. Semper Fi
Thank you, brother! Semper Fi!
I love this bowl. I need something like this to hold my needlework things while I stitch! What beautiful gain this piece has.
Thanks very much! 😊
This is one of my favorites so far, and one the most beautiful wood bowls I have ever seen. The square edges are amazing, and the color is gorgeous. I will be watching this one again. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!😊
Wishing you a belated happy birthday Marine! Semper Fi! My grandpa was a Marine, one ship, headed for France and WW1 when the armistice was signed. Spent 6 months there and was mustered out. I still have a copy of his discharge . Again, Semper Fi.
Once again, your craftsmanship amazes me. I am always looking for your new uploads and projects. I recently retired from 22 years, 3 months and 27 days of active duty USAF service and am now getting into woodworking/lathe turning as a means to let my creative side come out after being locked away for so long.
Thanks for sharing your work with us, we all enjoy it.
Thank you very much! Congrats on a successful career, and thanks for your service! Unleash that creative beast!! Aim High and Semper Fi
Cutting Air - incredibly difficult but the wings look so great! I’d be afraid of catching an invisible edge doing that ... but one day, someday, I will.
This one really came out fantastic. Thanks so much for once again showing me you skills and inspiring me to become a better woodturner.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! And your comment inspires me as well, Brian! 😊
This is where I like the video first then I watch it second.
Thanks very much! 😊
An astoundingly beautiful piece...and big ups to Mandy.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. And your Service❤️
Fantastic beautiful words just can't describe how talented u r love it
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Very nice bowl. And prayers for Amanda. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much!
Really lovely grain. One of those projects where you're not sure what's really happening unless you stop to check! Prayers for your friend.
Thank you very much!😊
Beautiful bowl!!! The grain pattern is stunning.
Praying for Mandy. May God comfort her and provide what she needs.
Thanks so much!
Finished piece is very unique.
You have nerves of steele....one false move on those wings could become catastrophic.
Many years back I aproach a corner a bit to hot & branded my forehead Stanley with a "U" Gauge......got clubbed like a baby seal.....Pops said walk it off. Staggered back up & came after it again...turned out a great piece & a wood turning lesson 😬 🇺🇸
Thank you! Had to laugh..."Walk it off!" I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time but sure make for a great story! 😁
Great work as usual. The design is unique and I will probably copy it! Just a note on those open grain woods like mahogany, walnut, etc. I have found using Howard’s Feed and Wax as a wet sanding lubricant, sanding up to 1000 grit does a really good job of grain filling and leaves a nice finish. Just my 2 cents.
Thank you! I'll have to look for it, sounds good 🙂
You are very talented Sir! Another beautiful creation. That was so cool of Ms. Mandy to send those Marine Corp statues to you. I love the collection you shared on a different video. Thank you for all the beauty you put forth into the world and a heartfelt "Thank you" for your service to our country Master Sgt.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
First off, thank you very very much for your service. My late father, passed away in 2015, served in the Marines as well. People would ask when he was still around, you were a Marine? As he would say no, I am a Marine. Once a marine, always a Marine. You sir, are an inspiration to me. I subscribed to your Channel so keep on making your wood carvings, what I've seen so far are pretty amazing. Your narration over the top helps to understand what you are doing. Have a great July 4th.
Thank you very much! So sorry for your loss. He was absolutely right! Thank you for telling me, and I hope you had a great 4th as well! Semper Fi
I 💜 ALL OF YOUR PIECES, BUT THIS ONE IS REALLY SPECIAL 👍🏼
I dont usually comment, but the great love that you have for your subscribers amazed me, so i want to say thank you for being you.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! It's so true, I feel overwhelmed with support and I'm so grateful! 😊
I always look forward to your next project sir.
Beautiful work! And prayers to Mandy!
Thank you very much!
In this day and age, its really refreshing to know that there are good people around, love your teaching voice, really relaxing, and a thumbs up to Mandy.
Thank you very much!😊
Thank you for this video. I have turned a few bowls, but I finally got up the courage to turn a square bowl with slightly swept wings. Made it from some East Indian Rosewood. I think it turned out pretty nice. Thank you for your service!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the great work and inspiration. God bless Mandy, and God bless America! You guys got your prayers and good luck to you!
Thank you, I really appreciate that! 😊
Rod, just when I’d thought I’d seen your best, you pulled this one out of your magic hat. I’m in awe. As for Mandy, I pray God will draw her near and that she feel His presents. He knows her needs and He wants her to trust Him. Amen!
Thank you very much, Robin!
Wow, exquisite! The grain oiled up like that reminds me of the semi-precious Tiger's eye gemstone. Fantastic!
Thank you very much!
Excellent! My wife says each of my pieces is different in shape and material. I am having a hard time keeping up with you. Very inspiring.
Semper Fi 🇺🇸
Semper Fi, brother! It's fun to keep trying new things on the lathe for sure! Thank you!
Wow, wow wow....My mind is officially blown!
Thanks very much! 😊
Hi ya Hump. What an awesome work. It's beautiful. I'm not a Marine but my dad was in Korea. Upon returning to the states he was stationed at Camp Pendleton. Well 61 years ago I was born in the Naval Hospital there n I'm very proud of my dad still. He,lol be 85 at the end of January n he's still fit as a fiddle. Thanks for being proud of your service. I am. God bless all your steps ........ Tony!!!
Hello Tony, Thank you very much! I'd be honored if you'd tell your dad Semper Fidelis for me. Your words mean a lot to me.
Great work with beautiful result. That grain looks amazing. And the color of the wood comes out really well.
Thank you very much!
That bowl is AWESOME!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks very much! 😊
I really appreciate you narrating your methodology for the choices of tools and steps to achieve your outcome. HooRAH Marine! Thank you for your service!
What a beautiful bowl! I really enjoy watching your videos.
Semper talis from Germany!
Love your humble nature and narrative, and thanks for not adding cheesy music so we can still hear the tools at work. Guanacaste is prevalent in Costa Rica and is the National tree there. It is illegal to cut one down, but if you find a fallen one it is worth gold! Great job!
Thank you very much! I used a lot of music and never spoke n my earlier videos, but have evolved a bit. I appreciate your feedback!
Love the look of this bowl the curved wings set it off. As always rod stunning work. I am glad I am not the only one who likes to shape around the foot of the bowl. Steve
Thank you Steve! 🙂
Can,t put into words how awsome that winged bowl is
Great job from an Army vet.
Thank you and Semper Fi!

Prayers sent! I know this is quite a bit in the past, but good prayers can never hurt! Very cool work! Thank you for sharing.
No, they can never hurt! Thank you very much!
Guanacaste is beautiful! Almost 3D-ish. Thank you for your service brother :)
Thank you, I appreciate that!
The design is inspired. Lines of the bowl accentuate the grain so nicely. Thank you for sharing this turning with the community
You're welcome, and thank you very much!
Very nice bowl. Thanks for sharing, and thank you for your service to our country!

Thank you very much!
you have my prayers as a fellow veteran, my brother.
I wouldn't have guessed that a block of wood that(to my inexperienced eye)looked a bit unimpressive, would turn out to have such a beautiful grain.I liked the design,it turned out beautifully.I really enjoy watching people create;thank you for sharing these videos with us,and also for your service.

What an interesting and beautiful bowl and the color is outstanding.
Thank you very much!
Nice job! Never heard of Guanacaste. I like how the grain turned out in relation to the wings. Mandy's gifts were awesome!
Thank you brother! Much appreciated 🙂
Doesn’t get much better than that. Such an impressive piece and performance. Maybe the design itself is fairly simple but your creation is on another level. It started as a bowl and ended like a Rembrandt.
Beautiful! Thank you for your service.
Fell in love with the bowl as soon as I saw it. Should have known it was yours, it is beautiful! Praying for Mandy.
Thank you very much!
That's beautiful and thanks for your service

Wish my grandfather was still alive to show him your channel he would have loved it he owned at least 2 or 3 of every tool you can think of and was a Marine at heart almost had a stroke when they quit making Red Dog beer lol he even told the doctor on his last day that the Marines hadn't told him he could die yet and he wasn't going to so they better get him a taxi so he could go home [he also had alzhiemers and dementia and several different strokes and heart attacks as well as open heart surgery but STILL took care of my grandmother, who had cancer was diabetic and also had dementia and alzhiemers, every single day and was an active Scout Master and Lions Club member] R.I.P. Old Man Semper Fidelis
Wow, James, thank you for sharing your memories! Your grandfather wounds like he was a Marine's Marine, dedicated to the very end. I wish I could've met him, he sounds like he was a real treasure. I do know the same esprit de corps, as most Marines do though, and it's a part of my life like it was his. R.I.P. Marine/grandfather! Semper Fidelis!
This bowl is absolutely stunning!!! Love it💕
