Woodturning a Bowl with Wings (a Square Bowl)

  • Wood turning a square bowl with wings. I make this pretty bowl from Guanacaste, a wood I’ve never used before. Thanks for watching!
While making this, I mostly use a 5/8 bowl gouge, but also a ¼ inch parting tool and a heavy round nose scraper. This winged bowl is then sanded up to 1000 grit and finished with walnut oil and shellac.

Once again, Rod picks out an outstanding piece of wood and produces an even more outstanding bowl with wings with very beautiful grain to it. Nothing diabolical about that at all. Mandy made a marine cry, what a woman :-)

My grandfather had a knack for being able to find unique things at garage sales and auctions. One time, he came home with a bowl that I now, forty-some odd years later, have a name for the wood. Amazing! Nice job on this one! 💗

Gorgeous bowl. I am a seventy eight year old new wood turner, just under a year, and I can only dream of doing beautiful work like that. I do it mainly as a hobby and absolutely love it. Watching "The Rebel Turner" got me interested in wood turning although I used to watch daddy turn wood when I was growing up. Your work is beautiful and I love your video's. God Bless.

You have nerves of steele....one false move on those wings could become catastrophic.
Many years back I aproach a corner a bit to hot & branded my forehead Stanley with a "U" Gauge......got clubbed like a baby seal.....Pops said walk it off. Staggered back up & came after it again...turned out a great piece & a wood turning lesson 😬 🇺🇸

Great work as usual. The design is unique and I will probably copy it! Just a note on those open grain woods like mahogany, walnut, etc. I have found using Howard’s Feed and Wax as a wet sanding lubricant, sanding up to 1000 grit does a really good job of grain filling and leaves a nice finish. Just my 2 cents.

Wish my grandfather was still alive to show him your channel he would have loved it he owned at least 2 or 3 of every tool you can think of and was a Marine at heart almost had a stroke when they quit making Red Dog beer lol he even told the doctor on his last day that the Marines hadn't told him he could die yet and he wasn't going to so they better get him a taxi so he could go home [he also had alzhiemers and dementia and several different strokes and heart attacks as well as open heart surgery but STILL took care of my grandmother, who had cancer was diabetic and also had dementia and alzhiemers, every single day and was an active Scout Master and Lions Club member] R.I.P. Wow, James, thank you for sharing your memories! Your grandfather wounds like he was a Marine's Marine, dedicated to the very end. I wish I could've met him, he sounds like he was a real treasure. I do know the same esprit de corps, as most Marines do though, and it's a part of my life like it was his. R.I.P. Marine/grandfather! Semper Fidelis!
