  • Changing the gearbox, transfer case, and rear axle oils on my Daihatsu Cuore Avanzato TR-XX R4 project car. Not a bad job to do once you know where the drain and fill plugs are!
    Reference for servicing specs (Japanese):
    www.geocities.j...
    The FAQs:
    "So this is a Mira, right?"
    - Yes, sort of. It is basically identical to the L500 (specifically, the L512S) Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato R4.
    "Don't Mighty Car Mods have one of these?"
    - Again, sort of. They're a very close relative of the Daihatsu MCM's Marty is a big fan of. The car in their Kei To The City film (and Marty's later conversion project) share much of this car's DNA.
    "Didn't Regular Car Reviews drive one of these?"
    - Yes! On the RCR UK trip, they drove an almost identical UK-spec Cuore Avanzato. I actually met the owner at the RCR UK meetup. It's actually my Suzuki Cappuccino that they mention in the video about the meet.
    "What does Cuore Avanzato even mean, anyway?"
    - It's Italian, actually. "Cuore" means "Heart", and "Avanzato" means "Advanced".
    "I drove one of these in Gran Turismo, and it said it was front wheel drive, not all wheel drive?"
    - They did 2WD/FWD versions of the turbo Miras in Japan, too, the "4" in the name is what denotes the AWD/4WD/4x4 version.
    "Is it a kei car?"
    - Yes, it meets the kei car regulations, though whether it "counts", being a UK car, is an interesting question.
    "Is it JDM?"
    - No, it's a UK model, there are some subtle differences/modifications for the UK market, though nothing earth shattering.
    "Did they really only make 80 of them?"
    - Of the UK road car version, yes, give or take a couple, plus there were about 20 rally-prepared ones. The Japanese equivalent is far more common.
    "Is it a 3 cylinder engine?"
    - No, it's a 4 cylinder, the Daihatsu JB-JL 16v engine, though it meets the same 660cc capacity limit for kei cars that the three cylinders used elsewhere do.
    "Is it turbocharged?"
    - Yes, with a small top-mount intercooler.
    "How does the AWD work?"
    - There is a selectable drive to the rear coming off the gearbox, with a viscous coupling between the rear differential and the propshaft to allow for the difference in wheel speeds when cornering.
    "How much does it weigh?"
    - 768kg, per the UK original specification sheet.
    "Where can I get one?"
    - To be perfectly honest, it's a lot easier to find a JDM one as an import than a UK car, but if you keep an eye on Ebay and forums, one might come up.
    "Is it for sale?"
    - I'm afraid not, no.

    Hi Dave, fantastic video mate, glad to see you’re giving the little 4wd cars so much love! Our l210s uses basically the same drive train parts but there are a few differences I can see which I’m keen to run by you for your opinion! Shoot us an email from our website if you can? Couldn’t find one for you on here.

    Very good tip about making sure you can undo the fill plug before undoing the drain plug!

    This is a great little machine, especially if you live in remote areas with lots of snow falls during winters , small car with turbo and awd, nice 🚗👌

    Great tips as always, my fill plug on my c300 4matic was so hidden and required removing so much stuff so I just removed the drain plug and pumped it threw the drain, so glad I did that, save me probably 3 hours of work, damn you mercedes. You kinda get use to not having fill plugs on mercedes, the transmission had no fill plug or dip stick so you are forced to pump it threw the drain.

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 лет назад

      I've had the opposite problem before - fill plug, but no drain plug! So you have to remove the pan from the bottom of the gearbox to drain it, lovely.

    Excellent, and fun. Also you have done a top notch job of cleaning that car up from top to bottom. I know it took hours and hours of hard work. Good job. I would however get some rust stop on the metal rusting there under the hood and top it off with some rustoleum paint. I have a 58 Cadillac that my dad bought in 1960😊. Still driving her around. Always needs a little this and that, and sometimes the that is VERY EXPENSIVE!!! LOL Life long So California car. Subscribed.

      The bonnet itself needs repair (they all seem to rust there), but yes, I'm planning on touching up and rustproofing the whole car, it's just a matter of finding time to do it.

    • @stevefranklin8052
      @stevefranklin8052 6 лет назад

      InitialDave when you consider it sat out in the elements for all those years, and how much it rains there, its amazing that the amount of rust seems quite small. And the engine sounds quite good to me. How many miles are on this car?

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 лет назад +1

      It's done 35,000 miles. I think the car being sat rather than being used means it's avoided the winter road salt, which can really attack cars badly, especially where you have the Japanese models that don't have great rustproofing from new. I've seen cars far younger than this with holes you can put your arm through.

      Yep, it's pretty good in the snow, see video 18! The sludge seems to have been successfully removed, and hopefully won't be back, as I'll keep on top of the servicing.

      @@grahamskinner3325 I'm afraid it's probably only of limited reference for you, as your drivetrain is completely different, but broadly speaking the process is similar on any car, its just a question of knowing what the correct oil type and quantity is

    Is that a DDR-Ruhla (DDR made) rear fog light in the white zip tie?! :D
    ps: You've done a nice job! It a great car, congratulations!!!

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 лет назад +1

      Hah, that's certainly an interesting question! Well, I don't think so. It was a Laser brand one, and was "E" marked as "E2", which I believe is France? Plus, it would have been fitted when the car was being prepared for the UK to meet our regulations, which in 1998 would be many years after German reunification, so unless someone had a big stock of them, I can't see it being from a period when the DDR was still a thing.
      Glad you like the car/videos though!

    • @madogery
      @madogery 6 лет назад

      Thank you for the quick reply!
      Almost got it... ;)
      Its shape seemed just very familiar to to e.g. this one:
      www.ebay.ie/itm/Vintage-Classic-Car-RING-Safety-Fog-Light-Lamp-New-Old-Stock-/142150534709?hash=item2118d50635
      I'm an East-German (and Japanese) car enthusiastic and in the late models these rear fog lights were used in many cases on Trabant, Wartburg, Barkas, etc, but used to came out as a spare part also.
      I 'm aware of the fact that this kind of stuff would be probably very rare in the UK, but who knows... ;)
      Br,
      madogery

      I suspect that it's one of these things where there's one or two places actually manufacturing them, and just putting different markings on them depending who it is a given batch is for.
      Or one of them's the original, and the others are knock-off copies.

      I think right now I'll settle for getting it back on the road rather than getting ahead of myself! The only modification (as such) I have planned is a slightly smaller steering wheel, I'm intending to keep it pretty much standard overall, at least until I'm more comfortable with the exact condition everything's in.
      Thanks for the offer, though!
