- The success of WWE's WrestleMania 3 caught the eye of the few surviving promoters. While it wasn't clear in 1987 if PPV was a passing fad or the wave of the future, it was becoming very evident that the home box office was a revenue stream that had to be seized in order to compete with Vince McMahon's WWF, and Jim Crockett Jr. was formulating a plan.

Thank you for so much focus on Wrestlemania IV. I'm one of the VERY FEW people that LOVE that Wrestlemania. It's the first time I ever saw wrestling. I was 4 years old and I've been hooked ever since. Bc of the tournament style of that Mania, when I played with my action figures, I'd always have a "tournament" with brackets and all. Wasn't just my wrestler toys either. It was them, my ninja turtles, my xmen, whatever I had. But yeah thank you again for the videos. Cultaholic is the best.

this discussion can easily bleed into a madella effect. i give it 5 years before an entire sect of people will swear it was never called WWF and videos will be a.i. generated proving it was always WWE....
This has been a fantastic series so far. Hopefully we'll see an NWA/WCW version.
I want to see something this deep for every promotion/territory/era. There are some channels that have done a deep dive into each territory, and they're good, but they don't have this kind of budget or talent on staff.

This is probably the best 2 - 3 year kayfabe run in wrestling history. The vacated belt, into the tournament, into the Mega Powers and WM 5 and then into the Hulk Warrior double champion WM 6 was absolute perfection.
Yeah, the Wrestlemania 4 tournament and Savage title chase was damn good booking. Everything made sense. Swerves directly served a purpose.
I agree. It seemed like from the events leading up to Hogan vs Andre in WM III until the Warrior won the title from Hogan in WM VI, the WWF was at its all-time peak when it came to the cast of characters, storyline, and the "believability" (if you want to call it that) of the matches themselves. It just ... I don't know, it FELT so compelling.
This was during my tenure in high school (born in 1971, graduated in 1990). And my friends and I were talking about this like some would talk about the popular soap operas of the day. I guess it WAS our soap opera.
So much fun.
Born in 80 so a decade younger than you but I was so insanely pumped when the Mega Powers formed. It as the greatest ever and devastated when they broke up. It was completely believable too. @@DaDitka
I love the work Cultaholic does, but this is by far the BEST content this channel creates. These long form documentaries are always edited and narrated on a level that could air on television without question. I've enjoyed every minute of the Golden Age and hope you also work on the New Generation, WCW's Early years and other poignant eras of other great promotions. You guys are nailing this! I grew up going to a WWF card at least once a year from 84-91 & followed TV WWF for that time as well. This is done so well that I'm being reminded by details I forgot. Top notch research Cultaholic team.

those were great days especially because gen x kids watched for the entertainment and larger than life characters . we didnt over analyze meaningless things like work rate promo skills who and who isnt being pushed like todays slow clapping beta male neck beards who could careless about story lines and only about trying to prove how "smart"they are and think they are part of aew 🤣

Yes, we also went once a year here in CT. I'll never forget when my mom said when we were going that year. You ever hear of WrestleMania she asked. Yes, they used to fill arenas, not stadiums!! My brother and I were freaking out!! Awful card, but a great time!! WM 11.
Absolutely fantastic. This is great and one could say it is the Golden Age of Cultaholic programming.
This series was great. I remember watching this as a kid. It was the true golden era. Say what you want, but Hogan was awesome. He was big and larger than life. Him slamming Andre is still such an iconic image. When Hogan lost to Andre I cried. Also, I'll never forget the amazing scene of Savage holding Elizabeth on his soldier celebrating his world title win. This time will never be replicated.

Nine-year-old me was one of those 33 million people watching The Main Event on February 5, 1988. One of the most memorable periods in my wrestling fandom.
Absolutley superb! As a 40 something lifelong fan of the golden age this was a flawless production thoroughly engrossing series & expertly narrated also. Thank you so much Cultaholic fantastic work.
Growing up in the late 80s and all through the 90s…there was no better memory as a kid than Golden Age WWF for me…this is the best series I’ve seen to date. Well played, Cultaholic.
Incredibly well-researched. I was shocked that there was even a reference to the local Philadelphia cable channel, PRISM, which is where I would watch the WWF Philadelphia Spectrum cards as a kid. The channel only had penetration in the Philadelphia / Southern New Jersey metro area but the research team for this video clearly dug deep to pull that factoid. The Spectrum cards used to be broadcast live on PRISM, but the WWF later changed the airing to the following day (usually Sunday afternoon) to show the matches in an effort to boost live attendance before removing the shows completely from the network.
who could forget cablevision's classic brown cable box and remote that had satisfying button presses
The macho vs hogan storyline was such a masterpiece. They gave it plenty of room to breathe. Just teasing you with bits and pieces. It is still my all time favorite feud.

I was about eight through 10 in these years. Everything was all wrestling all the time. Birthdays Christmas that's all I wanted . I was in Philly we had a lot of great House shows. These are easily the best Golden Era RUclips videos I've ever seen

Another brilliant installment in this absolutely brilliant series. It may be two hours long but it doesn't feel like it. And as always, Sam does a fantastic job narrating. This is going down as one of my absolute favorite documentaries ever and is one of the best things Cultaholic has ever produced.
In my opinion I could watch two more hours for each part.🤷♂️

There was lust in Hulks eyes! Never understood how Randy was looked at as the bad guy while hulk always acted like a selfish person. Calling himself the real Champ before the Royal Rumble, real good best friend & then he eliminated him. He didn’t wear “MegaPower” trunks at the survivor series while Macho did & Hulk also needed a separate entrance from the rest of the team. The world Champ came out with his team but not Hulk. In their final tag team match same thing Macho wore MegaPower trunks while Hulk didn’t. Always making a point to say shit to & about Liz that was so awkward. Randy shoulda pinned Hulk for the 1st time & LOVE that warrior got to but Macho shoulda got that. Instead he jobbed every time ugh lol! RIP Macho Lanny Warrior & Liz
Side note: WWF in 1988 was crazy popular. When you can go watch the “The Main Event” Hulk vs André match. The crowd goes absolutely insane when Andre is getting up to sneak up on Hulk!!! It’s like a Horror movie reaction. The crowd screams were unreal. The other reaction was when Honky hit Macho with the guitar. The crowd was in an uproar after he threw Liz to the ground but when he smashed the guitar over Randy’s head the place went silent man lol it was crazy. You also had all 4 champs in the ring at the same time. Such a great time in life….
This was the true Golden Age of wrestling IMO especially after the success of Wrestlemania 3. I was a kid and wrestling was my life back then and I religiously watched both NWA/WCW on TBS and WWF. The 80's was just a great time in general and I feel like the promos and heat back then was the best it ever was with the best characters with charisma. And the matches were slower than today but they sold it much better back then that they were truly wrestling and grappling with each other. Unlike wrestling today where it seems more like an acrobat or gymnastic show.
Thanks for making these vids I have really enjoyed them and happy to stumble upon this on a Sunday night to relive my childhood.

Truly a great time to be a wrestling fan during this time. I was glued to the TV Saturday morning to watch the WWF and NWA. Then, when the WWF had that Saturday Night Wrestling show it was a huge event for my friends and I. The week leading up to Saturday night, the show was all we could talk about during lunch and in the morning, in homeroom, before classes began. Brings back great memories.

I honestly missed all this as I was with JCP/WCW exclusive until 1998. I watched the majority of the Attitude Era then found marriage and hard work. I got the network and watched this period with a bit of a jaundiced eye. This shows me what it really was like.

The actor in They Live who fought with Piper was Keith David. David Keith is an actor as well, but he is a red headed white guy who has starred in such movies as An officer and a Gentlemsn and Major Leauge II.

It's funny that you mention the new title belt on The Main Event. If you watch Hogan's promo, airing immediately before the match, you can see he is wearing the prior design around his waist indicating that these two moments were not shot on the same day. 😆 Perhaps when the interview was taped at Titan Tower the belt hadn't been delivered yet. In my opinion the new design should have been rolled at WrestleMania.

I love how many wrestlers would have a "job". Especially if it was something you used to do. If Vince found out you used to work at a video rental store as a teenager, your wrestling name would be "Block Buster". Youre finisher would be called "BE KIND REWIND " and youd shove a VHS tape down your opponents tights. 😅 📼 📼 😅

12:00 Many who grew up during the Attitude Era assume that it was when pro-wrestling peaked in popularity. But the highest Nielsen rating that the Monday Night Wars achieved for a single show was 8.1 when Raw went unopposed, while the highest for Nitro was 6.0, also unopposed. Raw's most-watched segment on TV was Austin vs Taker on 06/28/99, which achieved a 9.5 rating [10.72 million viewers] after Nitro went off the air eight minutes early. Smackdown maxed out at 5.8.
There were far more channels to view in the late 90s than there were in the 80s. Those Raw and Nitro ratings were impressive.

You know what I'm realizing as I'm halfway into chapter 3 here? These videos are only recapping the ppvs and all the TV shows and things that we can all find on the internet ourselves. That being said, it just goes to show you that when you put together perfect imagery, and you have an amazing flow to your storytelling, you can tell even the most basic of stories and they will be like this. Just an absolute treat to listen to every minute of these. Cheers.
No Holds Barred was the first movie I saw in theaters (I was 4 and a huge Hulkamaniac at the time), my uncle who got me into wrestling took me. Great memories, terrible movie.

And yet, at about the 40:08 mark and for about two minutes, i can't help but feel a twinge of sadness. There is something about the old guard that started the whole thing in the early 1980s being moved out that... well, makes me sad. I know that times change, people het older, and folks move on. But to think that in just a little over 3 years, only 6 of the 24 participants in Wrestlemania I (give or take) would still be around?
It honestly makes me nostalgic right now, wishing for the days when the US Express went against the villainous Volkoff and Shiek, and Bundy and Studd were the team who couldn't be slammed, and the antics of Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Gone, but not forgotten. Thank you, gentlemen, for the memories. You made being a fan SO much fun.

This is great......with the WWE catalog on Peacock, I really wish there was a guide on what to watch and in what order to watch it. Im showing my kids the old Wrestlemanias/Royal Rumbles etc, but they would be a lot better if they could watch the stories buildup to get to the PPV events. Like I remembered most of Wrestlemania III, IV but totally didnt have the Hogan/Andre backstory.......Andre was heal to me as a kid who turned good, I totally missed the turn from face to heal as a kid.
First of all, this has been the most well made, most informational, professionally made and simply the BEST series on wrestling I've seen produced on RUclips....kudos to all of you at Cultaholic for an incredibly well job done!
Secondly, Hogan was 100% the heel in the Mega Powers exploding angle.....I'd have canned Hogan with the belt if he kept gettin all up in my woman's face. Savage should have gone over Hogan at Mania.....or at least have ended better than typical Hogan takes a finisher, no sells it, Hulks up and wins.....they should have done something different making the end questionable or at least not as complete a burial.

i said that part 3 would be the best.... but i believe that 1990 to 1993 will be the best video... Warrior champion and the best roster of all time is 1990-1991-1992
