While I appreciate the amazing amount of detail and factual research that has gone into this there are 2 pretty significant omissions that I feel deserve mentioning outside of these omissions amazing stuff cannot wait for the next one.
Firstly the issue with Rogers after he became NWA champ was that Mcmahon and Mondt kept him almost exclusively to their territories as they owned his contract exclusively and not the NWA and could control where Rogers appeared during his reign meaning only they were benefitting from his star power and resulting in the NWA having to go through them to get Rogers to appear for another territory and got tired of it and so finally got Rogers to drop the belt to Lou Thesz in a one fall match instead of a 2 fall one as was tradition at the time resulting in the ceceding from the NWA that followed the next day after Rogers loss.
The other is a slight error on Ali being brought in to be guest ref outside the ring that ended up being his role but he was actually meant to ref the match inside the ring but Patterson ever the veteran saw something was off with Ali all day and feared he would blow it so suggested to Vince that he be referee and Ali would officiate outside the ring so that Patterson could act if anything went down and it was a good thing Patterson did that as he had to restrain Ali when he tried to run in at one point.
Again outside of these 2 facts being omitted or slightly misconstrued amazing stuff and the amount of detail showed wrestling stuff that I didn't even know and my knowledge is pretty extensive in it's own right the Inoki deal before Mania was something I didn't know as well as the original name for Mania before Fink coined the name we know and love today.
That said amazing stuff and look forward to part 2

WOW... this is an absolutely incredible documentary! The Golden Age is very, very special to me. I became a wrestling fan in the spring of '85, shortly after 'Mania. I became a fan because of the LJN WWF figures. I didn’t know much about wrestling, but when I saw the first commercial for those figures, I had to have them. As a result, I became obsessed with wrestling and I consumed as much pro wrestling as possible, not just the WWF. Those toys are what started my passion for wrestling, and nearly 40 years later, that passion is still ongoing.

This was so incredibly well done! Loved the parts about Vince systematically taking over the territories. Also never knew that his Monday nitro takeover was actually the second time doing a similar heist!! Him taking over the Georgia championship wrestling show was just the precursor!
Thank you cultaholic for the fascinating history lesson!

I love that Cultaholic has taken this direction of these longform, well researched stories. They are always thorough, engaging and, as a fan of a certain vintage, the best wrestling content I've seen. If the quality and tone keeps to this level, this series may be your opus.

What a great time to grow up! Wrestling was amazing!
Sucks what happened to Dr. D. He could’ve been a MAJOR player in years to come
On a side note, I miss the hell out of the old USA Network from 1983-1994

Born in 1970..remember Bruno > Graham> Backlund transition.. growing up in queens watched WWF on CH. 9 sat mornings & sat at 11 pm.. saw matches at MSG, and even local- Sunnyside Gardens .. This was my WWF era- nobody talks about the WWF in the early 80’s pre-hogan without it being ridiculed, I was out by the end of the decade.. thanks for this!

WWF the upstart company many wrestling fans thought was too flashy (because it wasn’t wrasslin’) & upset long held tradition (because it wasn’t the NWA). It even had a touch and go start with errors & lows before getting it all together. All In under 1/2 a decade.

I'm 43 and watch New Generation WWF on peacock every night with my boys 6&9. We're watching Superstars, Raw and PPVs chronologically having recently watched WMX. They love Doink, Razor and Lex Luger, hate Crush, Owen and The King. Soon we'll be coming to the Attitude era and I'll have to hit the breaks, because they ain't ready for Sunny!
At that time, we'll be rewinding back to the Golden Era and the birth of Hulkamania forward.

Actually no. RUclips gets better ratings than TV. That is an antiquated statement today. Good TV shows deserve to be on RUclips. TV is long dead. Look at AEW drawing 200,000 views. A great RUclips video can get 100 million views. There is not even a competition between RUclips and TV anymore

@@ModernDayRenaissanceMan Wrong. TV is and remains the ultimate goal for content creators to get their stuff on. Ask the NWA how well RUclips worked out for them.

This is right where I jumped in. On a family trip in early 82, my cousin introduced me to wrestling (I was 9 or 10). From that point on every Saturday morning was watching 3 hours of wrestling - my local channel in Buffalo, the WWOR show from NY on cable, and the Maple Leaf Wrestling show out of Toronto. I was at the Buffalo version of the Snuka/Muraco cage match - we thought there was a chance Snuka might win as there was a TV crew (which we never got back then). I was also at the card in Buffalo on Dec 27, 1983 - the night after Backlund lost to Sheik. They had to announce it to the crowd as it hadn't hit TV yet. Backlund was set to defend against the Masked Superstar with Ivan Putski at the special guest ref.

Seeing all of these clips in one tight package was really enjoyable. These were wonderful childhood memories. As kid yes, I was excited to see the super popular Cyndi Lauper, but what really captured me was seeing women as tough, seeing them heading the main event. The first match I ever saw was a women's match that came across by accident on a Saturday night. I would have kept flipping the dial if I had seen men, but these were women, and as a little girl I was just blown away....you mean girls can do this too? And in the case of Wendi, you mean they can kick ass, have muscles and still be cute with pink outfits, long hair and makeup? It sounds crazy but 40 years ago was a different time. Thanks, Cultaholic, for the memories.
