SPECIAL VIDEO ✅ LONG JUMP SPEED: HOW FAST DO YOU NEED TO BE TO JUMP 6M, 7M 8M??

  • In this video I take a look at some old German research (circa 1980) which looks at various factors that affect the long jump. In doing so I hope that this will aid your understanding of the event.
I have often added more scientific and biomechanical knowledge to my experiential knowledge and self-developed understanding of how to coach the long jump over the years.
Doing this can bolster what you think you already know (!), challenge existing thoughts and give you new ideas and areas to work on.
    VIDEO-TIME-LINE
    0.00min: Intro
Key focus is 100m time, flight time and landing depth as factors which determine the long jump
    1.32: The Research
Key is the influence of speed (100m)
Originates from the Cologne Sports School
Slide: Selected 100m times and projected jump distance
Full table of old research presented (Kangaroo Club Magazine)
Considerations = +3%/- of indicated distance
So, if a jumper does not have sufficient jump power then they will not be able to jump the designated distance (slide).
4.16min: Clarification on the speed jump correlation (slide)
    Special take-off power is introduced.
Not every athlete who has speed and power is a good long jumper - there is a technical requirement.
Point to the requirement that 100m speed has to correlate to 30m speed.
5.46min: How to calculate new jump distance from improvements in 100m time (slide)
I suggest final 10m run-up speed is an equal correlation (you will need to understand the relationship and your jumpers).
6.27min: Factors affecting the flight phase (slide)
What happens at take-off regarding the centre of gravity.
Landing depth - looking at achieving an optimise landing ...
    7.35min: Explanation of flight
    Read in your own time.
    7.50min: Flight path (slide)
Once the jumper leaves the ground the centre of gravity of the jumper cannot be altered.
    8.22min: Technique
Favour was shown toward the hitch-kick.
Kicking out of the lower swing leg is crucial ...
    8.59min: Conditioning
    German key thoughts.
Reaction is singled out, as is speed of development of maximal muscular tension within a limited period of time
Low jumps are recommended 9Drop jumps I believe).
    I add in fast eccentrics...
    10.42min: Summing up
Speed is important but there are other crucial factors - jump height and landing depth. So. we need to focus on ways to improve them.
In the second part of this video I'll bring the research more up to date with some research from Australia, for instance, which looks at take-off angles. And we can see what may have changed.

Personally I think a flying 20 meter time is far more relevant to potential long jump distance than the 100 meter time. Reaction time to the gun, acceleration and speed endurance have no bearing on take-off speed for a long jumper, but they all play a part in your 100-meter time.

You are correct - but the research factored that in, if I have understood it correctly. It's about channeling that maximum generated speed over 100m (or a percentage of it) into jump distance potential. If you work backwards from 20m time to make a 100m time I have found with those I coach that the calculations still hold true. Remember too that this research is over 40 years old. It's one of the few pieces that I have found that is pretty accurate IMO. Many thanks for passing by and commenting.

Great video Coach and very eye-opening. Makes me realise that back in the day I was a terrible long jumper, only being able to convert my 10.8 speed into barely scraping beyond 7m (despite being able to dunk a basketball relatively easily). It makes you think that there must be many 'average' sprinters out there (10.5ish in the case of men), who could become World-class long jumpers if they considered switching.

Your point about the average sprinter being a world class long jumper is highly valid… in the U.K. we have tried to encourage some sprinters to try long jump but there seems to be a reticence. It’s odd when you could be a much better jumper than sprinter. And yes, your speed should have taken you close to 8m. Thanks for passing by

Hi John. Interesting. Presumably sprinters maybe consider long jump to be less ‘sexy’, and also there’s relay medals to be had if they stay in the sprints (especially now with the potential introduction of a mixed 4x1 event, which I think is nuts). Presumably there isn’t an equivalent study for the triple? That would also be eye-opening I’m sure, especially with our dearth of truly World-class triple jumpers (although we were spoiled for years with Jonathan Edwards followed by Philips Idowu, not to mention Ashia Hansen).

Many thanks - these Coach-Athlete videos are much more detailed and sometimes I think they would not be so appreciated on the main channel where so many these days seem to want less considered information and research-based analysis. And they do of course take me quite a lot of time to do!

There is a transcription error in the original data from the bottom of column three to the top of column four as there is a step of 10cm where everything else steps 6cm.

What WR would you say in track and field is harder to break than Edward’s triple jump ?

    • @Johnshepherdtrackcoach
      @Johnshepherdtrackcoach  4 месяца назад +2

Well, I would have to say it - the long jump world record. It's stood for longer than the TJ one has and at the moment no one has really come close. Furlani may be can challenge it - he's young and the foul he did in the Glasgow World Indoors was one of the longest jumps I have seen for a while. Thanks for the question. (We could talk about the women's 800m 200m and 100m records ... but they are from a different era...)
