    Two things.
    1. I had to cut one option out of the video and revert another to screenshots due to copyright claims, so if you left a comment on the last upload, it got deleted. I'll find a way to get the suggested movie into the next video like this.
    2. As for Mullholland Drive, be sure to watch the 2001 release, as opposed to the 1999 pilot, which is different. Although, I think you might be hard-pressed to find the original since the theater adapted version is widely sold. (I think someone uploaded it to YT years back, but I don't know if it is still round).

    Being John Malkovich isn't nearly talked about enough, I absolutely love it so glad you mentioned it. Will watch upstream colors soon you definitely sold me on that, love the others too expecially Mulholland Drive but personally I would've put Lost Highways . Thank you, love your work keep it up ✌️

    I think Coherence would fit here, not about memory but the themes of identity and what people are willing to do are prevalent. It's a great low-budget Sci fi film about a dinner party that takes place on an evening when a rare cosmic event occurs.
    Primer Shane Carruth (Upstream Colour director/writer) first film also has some Severance adjacent themes and vibes to it.

    • @leonb456

    One show I didn’t see pop up in the tv show lists was The Resort. It’s not as heavy as Severance but it’s got some good mystery, great characters, and a lot of great visuals and jokes along the way. I feel like it got overlooked. But it’s got Chidi from the Good Place and the lead from the USS McAlister episode of Black Mirror in it.

  • @derekhiemforth
    @derekhiemforth 2 месяца назад +4

    I think Mulholland Dr. is the best movie I've ever seen. It also benefits enormously, more than any other movie I've seen, from repeated viewings (even more than Memento, which also benefits tremendously). It's much easier to follow and digest when you can watch while already knowing what's coming. I've seen MD at least 10 times, and I still find new connections and allusions every single time I watch it.
    To me, part of the key to enjoying MD is realizing that the multiple meanings are intentional. It's not supposed to have one specific meaning, nor does the viewer have to choose or build one interpretation to adopt. Instead, it's supposed to mean many things at once. It's not this or this or this... it's this AND this AND this. It's truly a masterpiece. 👍🏻

    Brooooooo so happy to see Upstream Color on this list. No one talks about this film, it's a tragedy. I saw it twice in theatres, and the second time Carruth was there and did a Q&A. Loved loved it.
    edit; Every single one a banger. Great list. I've seen all of them, but some I'm *long* overdue for a revisit so this is going to get me to do that.

    Some others movies that I think are cool are “Waking Life” by Richard Linklater, “The Thirteenth Floor,” by Josef Rusnak, and “The Fountain” by Darren Aronofsky.

      A friend of mine and I saw The Fountain in the theater. We were the only ones in there and were also on psychedelics, so it was a truly amazing experience 😂. Waking Life is also fantastically trippy

    Just throwing an idea out there- maybe a video on shows or movies like Silo? But kinda like severance too. With the bigger overarching theme about a protagonist who starts asking the “big” questions and unraveling an interesting story or background

    One thing I want to mention regarding Being John Malkovich is that it played with the idea of "15 Minutes of Fame" so consider that when you're considering everything else. That film was bizarre tbh

    Cool, another recommendation video! I throw one thing into the ring as well: the anime "Paprika" (2006). The tone is maybe not so much comparable, but the themes definitely are. You never know what's real and what's not in this movie! Probably the most mind-bending piece of media I've ever watched.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  2 месяца назад +1

      Love "Paprika". It came out the same year as one of my other faves "Tekkonkinkreet". Just as trippy and introspective.

    Magnificent job!!! I’ve seen most of these and I’m so glad to have some more movies to look for while we keep waiting. Mulholland, Eternal Sunshine, and Memento are the greatest in my opinion. You do such a wonderful job every time. Thank you!!

    If Severance was produced in the late 90's or beginning of 2000's, Jim Carrey would be a perfect fit for Mark's character
    Anyway, Eternal Sunshine, Memento and Mulholland Drive are in my top 30 ever. Eternal and Memento being top 10 and Gattaca being my top 1, and this one I think is somehow correlated with Severance

    What an absolutely delicious and delightful list of movies. Absolute bangers! 3 that I've seen and will now watch again, 2 that I knew about but forgot to watch and 1 new one. All of these movies will get watched again. One movie I thought about was "Upside Down" with Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess. Great video as always.

    I've been hitting the DVD piles at my local Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores as this is prime shopping season for used DVDs. (Spring cleaning, you know.)
    I love physical media because it is so easy to stop, pause, and replay certain scenes. And with these kinds of movies, like MEMENTO, I needed to do that a lot!
    I just recently viewed ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND for the first time, and I'm glad I saw SEVERANCE first, because I would have thought it was really wacky otherwise. I definitely got the SEVERANCE vibe while watching it despite it being its own story. Two thumbs up!
    I also scored a copy of the elusive MULHOLLAND DRIVE at The Goodwill. I can't believe I found this one! I have loved David Lynch's movies ever since I saw ERASERHEAD at a midnight showing at the Waverley Theater in the 1980s. MD is the kind of movie where I never know which side of dreamworld I'm on. Kind of like an Innie in the outside world...or an Outie in the inside world. MD is that kind of mind-bending experience.
    DARK CITY was Roger Ebert's favorite film, so much so that he would go to a DARK CITY convention periodically. Of course he does the commentary on the DVD, and that makes all the difference.
    I have had MEMENTO since it was on VHS tape, and it doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I always find something new. The story is told not only from the standpoint of someone with no memory but kind of backwards and forward. (Christopher Nolan films are always available at The Goodwill because Nolan believes in the medium, so there's lots of them and because his films are sometimes the kind that need multiple viewings. This is the granddaddy of Nolan films.)
    I know I saw BEING JOHN MALKOVICH in the theater, but in that kind of environment, I can't really pay close attention. I found a DVD at the Salvos, but I haven't watched it yet. I guess I'd better.
    Thanks for the recommendations!
    P.S UPSTREAM COLOR is the only one I don't have, so I guess I'll have to stream it.

    Mulholland Dr. is good but I highly suggest David Lynch's lesser known Lost Highway.
    Not only is it about two intertwined stories that blurs how reliable the narrative is, but it also stars a much younger Patricia Arquette. Excellent movie and one that is worth watching more than once.

    I’d humbly suggest a movie called Advantageous from 2015. Themes of identity and mind/body dichotomy tied into a work related story set in a vaguely futuristic world with an interesting twist. It gets mixed reviews but I loved it and have never stopped thinking about it. Love the channel!

    My recommendation to add: The Congress. That one is a real trip, it's half live-action and half animated in a very trippy way. Explores things like identity and the loss of it, and what the purpose of life is. Think it fits!
