  • This may well be one of the #scariest parts of downtown #Guangzhou for ex-pats new to the city, and you definitely won't find this location on any tourist guide... #China #Unknown.
Shipai Village (Chinese: 石牌; Pinyin: Shíhpái) is the largest urban village in Guangzhou, China. It is situated in the middle of Tianhe District, the CBD area of Guangzhou, with dense multi-story dwellings. The village is crisscrossed with around 170 narrow alleys but at the same time is surrounded by tall skyscrapers and bustling commercial streets. There are many shopping centers, including the city's most up-market shopping complex with luxury designer brands (think Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc.) and entertainment centers (cinemas/gyms) as well as several institutions of higher education, such as Jinan University; literally, only a few minutes walk from its entrance.
With an area of only one square kilometer, it has been estimated to house over 50,000 people from rural areas who have relocated to Guangzhou for work and live in Shipai Village due to the relatively affordable rental apartments that can be found there.
A 1999 Census recorded Shipai as having a population of 9,317 (1,994 families), while in the year 2,000, a census recorded a non-native floating population of approximately 42,000 and a population density of 51,181/km², which is representative of the urbanization of China overall.
Inside the village, you can find a sense of clutter, mutual tolerance, contrast, different dialects, and organized chaos that can be felt everywhere. People from all walks of life live here. A variety of services are available, such as restaurants of different kinds, barbers’ shops, saunas, beauty salons, and hospitals and medical centers.
But for the uninitiated, this can be a terrifying and eery place. It is dark, gloomy, and silent in some parts, while in others, it is full of life, bustling, and bright (mainly from neon lights).
In this video, I will take you through the maze that is Shipai Village, and then take you to another part of the city (also referred to as an urban village) that used to look exactly like this one but has since been completely transformed.

I feel it so ironic that when you told that people in the restaurant that you were from Straya and he responded you with a word "Friend", despite the current tension between the two countries. They are the people in the bottom, but they have no hostile towards you. However, if I switch back to 9News, 7News, ABC, or ozBargain, no matter it's the public media, or the bargain people, It's so hard to stand with the contents against China and Chinese people there.

It is why I don't watch any of those TV stations in Australia. Full of negative propaganda. Unfortunately in Australia, if you want the truth you have to search for it. Having said that, we have many Chinese families living in our town, always friendly, I know them well. There will always be brainwashed who believe anything they are fed, by both the Govt. and MSM.

I had been living in Australia for 10 years and it's safe to say Chinese people always see ordinary people from other countries as friends, regardless of their nationality and regardless of any political issues at the government level. But here, because media probably has a higher level of creditability in the public, ordinary Australians are probably less aware of the media's influence on our perception. In China, everyone knows the government uses state-owned media for propaganda, so they tend to think more critically about anything on news.

for me, the scariest part of any north American city is that I go inside and come out with missing body parts or missing wallets!!! years ago, I was lost in LA, went inside a gas station to ask for direction and was warned NOT to go into certain areas.

I think the main difference is that there is always someone who is responsible for the upkeep of the street or neighbourhood in China, and there is always going to be police or security present. In America or the UK, there are some areas that the police just don't go, and that means they can be overrun with crime.

@@sandyau5380 93%, WOW. It's impossible to find any democracy with such high approval for it's government. China's government must be amazing and obviously the people do love the government leaders in China very dearly. To be honest if it were any higher than 93% I'd start to be suspicious; wondering if there was something else happening, you know, almost as if the people didn't feel safe giving an honest answer . Like we used to see in Iraq where approval of Saddam was 98% or North Korea where it's 100%.. But China is only 93% so obviously the government actually is simply doing an amazing job... not perfect, of course, but almost perfect and better than every other government by far. The people in China must wake up every day and feel like the luckiest people in the world, having a government so wonderful.

I mean that walk through the maze was started to look too much like a set, rather than shot on location which I'm sure was a ton of effort. I think the lighting was perfect, almost too perfect. Hiring more extras might be good also. It seemed every shop had exactly two people which may make some question just how much of this was planned. When people see the real life China like this, many just will not believe it because of the lies we've been told, they'll be looking for conspiracies like, "where are all the people; why are there two and only two people in every shop: and "why is the food uncovered and who is going to buy all that?!"

Hey Harry, wonderful tour, thank you. It reminds me just how much I miss going back to see my family "in laws". They don't all live in big cities, so I got to see this more often. I have a couple of friends who live out near the airport in Guangzhou, we stayed with them for a bit short of a week in early 2018. Funny, now I think about the places we went to, the one that left the biggest impression on me was the old business part of the city as she called it. Just huge as an intersection goes and one great massage on my poor feet by that time. The apartments we were living in were like self contained parks, security gates to prevent unauthorised vehicle access. Kids could play safely. Plenty of well maintained pathways, without pavers sticking up to trip you. Water features that lit up at night and a wonderful sense of safety at all times. Our friend, (I do know her name just not how to write it) said that now she has even sold her car, they just use an app on the phone that is linked via a company and drivers travelling match up with people needing to travel, a sort of complex car pooling but with extra choices. The day she collected us from the train station required a larger car for a specific task. So she just posted the required details and a number of replies showed up and she chose the one the suited best. Money was exchanged just like you paid for the taxi, I am guessing WeChat pay. It is a fact that life is not so hard as the western political parties want us to believe it is. They are afraid of the fact that this type of government is working better than their own system and if people know the truth, then they are finished!

@@HazzaChinaVlogs He brought up an important point, I also noticed many Western tourists tend to go to Dharavi slum in Mumbai to see and feel the Slumdog Millionaire movie vibe, Noise and Chaos in Old Delhi like they see on Western movies, Varanasi on the Ganges river with cremation and all that to experience the "REAL INDIA" as seen on Western documentaries ..........off the beaten track as you say. Ironically, the off the beaten track places has became the destinations for Western tourists and the touristy areas have became a tourist place for local tourists. The only touristy place in India that Western tourist might tolerate is the Taj Mahal- probably something for the Instagram photos to show people back home that you have went to India. Similarly, the only place to go in Indonesia is Bali bars & Nightlife and in Bangkok, Thailand- also bar and nightlife. These places are less likely to be visited by Chinese and Asian tourists.
Therefore the REAL life of the locals like where they live and where they usually work, or play or hang out are totally missed by the Western tourists. So when they go back to their country, they will boast to their friends that they have seen the R........E..............A...........L wherever. To be fair, Chinese and Asian tourists also miss all these as they were busy taking selfies in touristy places.
However, most SE Asian countries are gearing toward Chinese tourists with bus load of cash rather than Western tourists who are usually back-packers who stay in cheap back packer lodges and spend way less money than Chinese or Asian tourists.

Can also hear the Cantonese music in the background and the canto accented mandarin being spoken by one of the store owners. The commercial space/residential mixed developments that lined the streets are reminiscent of some of the shop houses in South East Asia inhabited by the 华侨。Are you on Patreon mate?

It's a huge success. This area used to be so filthy and poor and littered with toxic chemicals from stripping old electronics for metals, puddles of unknown sludge and plenty of thieves and shady stands of people and big crowds milling around lots of tiny stalls and shops of those reselling components and parts outside the larger market nearby, Now with that all pushed out and burried, the area has become a shining example for China's media and entertainment industry with a very professional set design and flexibility for an on location shoot like this one. Plenty of movement with bikes and a few extras on foot to balance things out, The bright plastics shop stood out as you could not see a single bit of glare from the lighting, as did the chairs along a town square vibe. Encounters seemed a bit forced but not scripted especially with the subtitles shown in both languages (not subtle but effective!). My only critique was the shops were obviously filled two people in each and always modeling interaction. Also some texture is missing along the roadway I kept expecting to see gaffer tape. Overall a B+

Really nice & informative video. Whilst I recognise the improved living conditions in the modernised 'village', I suspect the older generation would still nevertheless miss the atmosphere of the older style ones, where the living is more cheek by jowl. I also noticed just how clean the pavement was in the old village + the use of electric bikes & no blaring music - I'm comparing these with the Thai equivalents common in the bigger cities like Bangkok, where in fairness, I also like the grunginess.
Either way, it's good to appreciate all these differences & I would love to visit, one of these years perhaps, just to experience it first hand.

I am not sad that old change to new through the passage of time. China cannot remain stagnant only for your eyes and cameras. If you want old China (older than most countries in the world) there are tons of them like ancient cities, villages and monuments - a bit touristy but it's worth it.

  • @stanbimi
    @stanbimi 3 года назад +2

For contrast, you might want to explore some old "village" (really just neighbourhood) around Liwan (Lychee Bay Park), west side of Guangzhou. There are old residential alleyways, definitely not "slum" like Shipai Village here. The old sliding horizontal wooden gate on the front door is an unique architecture feature of the area. While you are there, check out the historical restaurant 泮溪酒家, one of the three famous "garden restaurants" in Guangzhou. It's a special place with ponds and pavilions.

Thanks for sharing this! I lived in Guangzhou for ten years and still miss the city. I used to live in ZhujiangXincheng. I'm quite familiar with these unburn villages. I witnessed the transformation of Liede Village from a ragtag place to modern skyscrapers. I also heard the first village in your video, Shipai, may not be demolished and convert into new buildings simply because the cost of compensation has skyrocketed, no one can afford it. So the best the city government can do is some renovation and street cleaning-up. During day time the village is quiet, but if coming back in evening you will see a noisy and lively place if not dangerous.

I assume they would get them delivered by the delivery people on those scooters... I just couldn't imagine moving in there, and bringing all of your furniture. You'd need to get it air-lifted in! haha
