  • I was interstate about a month ago and I found a guy selling his Omega Seamaster 210.30.42.20.04.001 on the preowned market.
    I met up with him and the deal went south and the result was a $6000 lesson and 2 broken hearts
    Thanks for watching

    When shopping for a watch in that price bracket, I just go direct to an authorised dealer. I’d rather invest $8000 in a genuine item instead of $6000 on a deal of a lifetime on a watch that is likely actually a $200 knockoff at best.

    • @TECHFIGHTER
      @TECHFIGHTER 3 года назад +6

      I like to buy from a reputable jewelry store owner that is not an authorized dealer because I save so much. I do go ahead and send the watch in for service to the manufacturer to verify it is legitimate. And I advise the shop owner I will be doing so in order to receive a guarantee from him that it's coming back as an original and not a fake.

    Good on you for believing Trevor’s story. I wouldn’t. You had suspicions from the beginning - the price was well below market at under half of MSRP, and it was being sold without papers. He says he bought it for OVER MSRP ($6k) at a shop in Malaysia - why would anyone go to Malaysia to buy a luxury product at more than they would pay for it in the states or UK? And why would they sell it for under market value in mint condition? I think Trevor bought a super clone with a genuine box and thought it was so good that he would be able to pass it off as genuine without issue. When the buyer pulled out a loop to examine and called him out, he was devastated, because he had chosen the wrong person to sell it to and now would probably be pressured to take down his listing. Idk, man - maybe I’m just cynical! But it sounds like a scam to me.

    • @veganbutcherhackepeter
      @veganbutcherhackepeter Год назад

      My thoughts exactly. You can buy a really good naked super clone for 600-800$ and for a few more dollars you'll get a fake box and even fake papers with it. Sounds more like "Trevor" put on a slick suit and tried to get someone to finance his trip to Southeast Asia post travel, if that's where he really bought the watch. Or he just bought it online like most people do.

    I was eyeing a Breitling Super Ocean 44 blue dial for a while and I was gonna buy pre owned, but I went to an AD while on vacation in Aruba and bought it new. The satisfaction of seeing the dealer activate the warranty online and getting the card , box and receipt is worth the few hundred extra than buying a used one. Another good avenue to take care of the issue early is if you buy a watch and aren't 100% confidant in it to take it to another jeweler for appraisal for insurance reasons. Places around me charge about $50-$100 for this and there isn't any harm in having a second set of eyes look at an expensive watch and hopefully verify its authenticity. At least you could find out if the watch is a replica early on and hopefully dispute credit charges/get a return soon after purchase (i.e., it sounds like he bought it from a store).

    "if it resonates with you, it's perfect for your collection" This is really the thing. If you try to buy watches based on internet popularity or specs, you might find a rather expensive watch in your collection that you never wear. You're in the watch shop and you are looking at two watches and deciding to pull the trigger. One is the watch that you "should" buy, better brand recognition, better movement, and the other you just like better. It just feels more friendly. You're supposed to like the other one, but you just cant get exited about it. It's like you almost feel obligated to get it. Always buy the one you want, and you will always wear it.

    • @themightysquid

      Well said! I went to my AD in 2019 to see a 2000 Submariner that they had just gotten in. When I got there it was next to a 2000 Explorer 2. When I tried them both on, the Sub felt top heavy and the larger crown dug into my hand. I felt that even though this was the grail watch I always wanted, it would not be my daily wear. When I put on the Exp2 it just melted onto my wrist. It had the exact same dial but with the 24 hour hand like the GMT, smaller crown, lighter weight, same bracelet, and had a more unique look with the fixed steel bezel that differs from all the Sub and homages of the Sub that are so ubiquitous. I wrestled with my pre-conceived decision that here was my grail watch and I actually loved the Exp2 more, and for all the right reasons. Now, I wouldn’t knock the beauty and iconic look of the sub, but I had similar “homages” of it and this just looked like the rest of them, just much more expensive, albeit the original icon. I ended up going with the Exp 2, saved $1500, and have been very comfortable with my decision since.

Make sure if they are not a shop or dealer , that at least they have great feedback and been a member for a reasonable amount of time. But you do get protection by paypal and eBay alike. I've read stories of people buying off established stores and still been fakes, so if your buying an expensive watch then an AD is sound advice. Plus you know the warranty is valid too.

    Wow that is a harsh lesson for Trevor, especially while learning about this hobby that can clearly cost you dearly. I have the exact same Omega, which was direct from the AD, managed a decent discount with a free Wolf watch roll. There is just a certain value that i cant cut corners on unless your knowledgable, which thank fully i am, however for this kind of watch you want the best possible experience for your hard earned money!

    Man, I feel for that guy.
    That's not a good day. At all. For anyone.
    Makes me wonder how many folks have been scammed and are are walking around with a $1K version of a $10K watch without knowing...
    On a brighter note; the Alpinist. I've had mine for 6 months now. Still in love with it (cream dial gold hands/indicies version). They're great on a jubliee Pete; although yours is looking pretty good on the Monza strap.
    Thanks for the sobering wake-up. No matter how much we think we know, we all need our guard up. Some watch scams are getting pretty sophisticated. If we think it can never happen to us, think again!

    Although I agree with the buy from an AD premise, you have Rolex wanting you to buy out the store before you get the grail. Simply put you need to qualify the person from whom you intend to purchase the item. By the seller.

    My father had a similar experience some 25 years ago and ended up buying 2 (yes two!) Rolex watches in Spain from a transaction that started on the beach!! He trashed one when he got back home and all was discovered and had the other mounted and kept under glass.
    He was considerably more humble from then on and that shiny watch under that glass reminded him almost every day.
    My heart goes out to this poor guy however it’s very possible to rebound, don’t be embarrassed, talk about it because you are far from the only one to walk this path.
    My father was adamant that he made more money than he lost over the following years because he was changed, for the better, by the experience.
    Good Bless

    Just over a $4600USD mistake... Ouch!
    My parents purchased a "Jade" jewelry set in Thailand costing a few thousand dollars which they gifted to my wife before our marriage. I sent it off for an official appraisal for insurance purposes and the set came back as fake. The appraisal cost me $200 which far exceeded the value of the set. The southeast Asian market is a tricky place, one that should only be entered with a bullet-proof exit strategy. Overall, any deal that is too good to be true, is.

    Im in Malaysia. And im planning on buying a preowned omega seamaster bond. It’s my first ‘big’ watch as i only owned seikos. I watched countless youtube vids to match the pictures of the sellers watch as it’s an old watch and also mentally prepared on how to deal with the seller. I always wanted to learn how people buy luxury watches. For instance, what to look for to know the watch legit
