  • This bus joined the fleet in 1972. Bus 7523 was the first of a group of 30 buses, numbered 7523 - 7552. The last batch of T6H 5305 buses delivered to the TTC. This group was the last of the 3rd generation GM fishbowl buses. Older buses had black water bumpers and standee windows.
This generation of buses was switching away from black water bumpers in favour of chrome. So they looked pretty sharp in the maroon and cream livery. Later buses had a different black bumper and looked more dreary in a CLRV livery. Essentially making this batch the last of the 1960s style buses in the fleet. This model also has the newer smaller rear taillights. Later buses revised the marker lights above the rear window, they were on a protrusion above the window rather than flat with the roof line.
On older models(see video below), there are clear windows on the sides of the main back glass, separated by a black strip. The exhaust was underneath the left side aimed down. On this model the exhaust was the small cream-colored left panel of the back window, it's hard to see unless you find a clear photo but you can see the exhaust pipe sticking out in the top left corner of the rear window area. The right side was a vent. On later TTC buses this was painted black on both sides.
Here is another great video on a similar bus, but slightly older bus. You can see the clear quarter glass on the back window.

The seating configuration was revised away from bench style to the newer individual seat and more vandal proof seats as found on CLRV streetcars.

There were also mechanical improvements, such as the transmission.
This bus was retired in 1992, having never been repainted into the updated CLRV paint scheme, making it the last bus in the maroon and cream paint scheme to be retired by the TTC.

Here is an excerpt from TTC Diesel City Bus brochure from April 1984 regarding this series of GM New Look.
    The GM "New Look" Design.
During the late 1950's General Motors Truck and Coach Division (of Detroit) began the development of what was to become the basic transit bus for North America. Their model 5300 series, which GM designated the "New Look", was the first major city bus design in more than 20
years. It featured a standard 6 cylinder "V" type engine with automatic transmission, together with greatly increased passenger window and driver windshield area. The heating and ventilating system was also much improved, and the use of the "shorter" V6 engine allowed room in the engine compartment for optional air conditioning equipment. In 1959, the Commission acquired its first group of fifty model 5301 city buses.
Prior to November 1962, the 5300 series were manufactured solely in the United States (at Detroit) but from that date General Motors began producing the Canadian version at their London, Ontario plant and has since produced almost 11,000 of this series both at London and (more recently) at their facility at St. Eustache, Quebec.
This Canadian production is in addition to more than 45,000 of the 5300 series produced in the United States since 1958. To date, the Commission has purchased 1664 of the "New Look" vehicles, which constitute the majority of its city bus fleet.

I drove Fishbowls in the late 1970's for SEPTA. They were so clapped out 1 gear going up the expressway at 20 mph P.O.C.

Where these the ones that where taken out of storage in the 90's and had brown bench seating on the inside? There where others that where retrofitted with single brown seats but where metal frames not the usual plastic.

So your referring to 33:06. I'm not sure where it is, but I know it's the house of one of the people there on the trip. I would think it's the fella driving the bus. Unfortunately I don't remember who.
At about 17:37, the bus picks up Ted Wickson.
At 34:02 Ray is looking out of his apartment window, down on the bus.

So what was the exact difference between this batch of 30 and the rest of the fleet (other than the paint scheme)?
And why these where retired and subsequent other models where rebuilt?
