I know nothing about drums, but I always admired how uncomplicated JP kept his kit. When he gets into his head-bobbing groove and with Dan giving a foundation on the bass, Tim and Neil doing their thing, I just melt into the music. Clutch is the greatest band I've ever heard.

So great that he has passed all of his influences on to his fans and followers through his own amazing drumming, and has himself become a very important influence to a whole generation of drummers. After all these years, he's on or at the top of, at the very least, tens of thousands of people's "Top Five Drummers of All-Time" lists around the world. That's pretty fuckin rad. It's great to see the intense passion and knowledge he brings to his instrument, and he's willing and eager to share his wealth of drumming knowledge with the masses, who should definitely be listening. JP's attitude and attention to detail is what's missing in much of today's music. Thanks a lot for posting this interview

I have went to several VIP shows where they let you see the band warm up and hear songs. Every time I walked in JP would be playing. During the warm up he'll be playing. After all the boys got done w the warm up and were off the stage and we were told to get out.... he was still fucking playing. Before the show while the other bands were playing ...he was on his fucking practice pad outside and still fucking playing!!!!! The guy is a machine that never stops learning and getting better. Im right there with Jean Paul.. as a self taught drummer myself, Bill Ward is my favorite.. back in the 90s my dad got a vhs copy of Sabbath live in Paris 1970 off his coworker who heard I was learning how to play drums and wanted me to watch it. I taught myself how to drum playing along to that concert movie every day after school. This was before RUclips, so to actually be able to see Bill Ward playing in a live setting and being able to visually see what he was doing behind his kit was mind-blowing for me at the time. Back during that era of Sabbath Bill was playing a similar setup as Jean Paul before he started playing massive ludwig kits. Ive always been drawn to and inspired by Jeans playing, too. I had no idea he to was inspired by Bill Ward.

I've played drums for over 50 years, and didn't discover "Clutch" until hearing "Electric Worry" and "Burning Beard" about 14 or 15 years ago. I love Jean-Paul's Drumming. Since then I haven't been without the Psychic Warfare CD in my Truck or on my Spotify Lists. It's become one of my favorite albums of all time. As a Veteran Drummer of years of playing music as a Full Time Musician, I can say that Jean-Paul Gaster is true to his craft and the art of Drums. I'm retired for the most part, but he still inspires me to hit my practice room and get behind my kit.

JP is a drummer that IMO everyone should know because he really is a student of the drums. Though he's a rock drummer, as he mentioned he's influenced by jazz drummers as well, particularly Alan Dawson who not enough people know. He practices Alan's rudimental ritual regularly. He's just a guy who should inspire people to learn the history of the instrument, even the styles you don't play, and the importance of groove and dynamics, even in rock drumming which I think some drummers gloss over.
