Just like a monotone, dry professor giving a lecture about desert sand. You will get information without the strength of the original wind that eroded rocks to put it there.
I knew this was a cover back then, of course, but this version was the one that taught me the lyrics. The way he pronounce every word so clearly and articulated was amazing for a non-English speaker.
Believe it or not, music is considered the BEST way for non-English speakers to learn the language. Sadly, it doesn't work the other way around for some reason.
I'm so suck with english subject at school back day but after i've heard Nirvana song when they released Nevermind album,i'm think i can speak english until this day.lol
Great thing about CAKE, besides their wildly inventive, quirky tunes and borrowing from and superbly blending so many musical genres is that their songs so often tell a story with a storyline arc. And the songwriters are virtual metaphor machines. Sometimes, I think of them as if Herb Albert had started a funky rock band! THINK about it!
I love when bands do covers of popular or famous songs in their own style. The original song is more of a victory theme of someone breaking free of a bad relationship, while Cake's version is more of a bitter "Fuck you and everything you stand for" kind of song.
Agreed! That is the EXACT difference between the songs. Just classify it as the Black version and the White version. A Black woman singing this is Testifying as to her freedom. Cake's vocals are not convincing - at least not to many Black people, but it's cool as a country/rock version. But better? If you want to go by instrumentation, it's got more going on, but then disco was not about instrumentation (well, that's not right, either, but lets let that go for now...). The best disco was killer singing and a killer beat to dance to. This version would have me tappin' my toes, but not shakin' my booty.
I bet you anything that you love a lot of covers, you just didn't know they were covers. Like Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U or The Beatles' Twist and Shout
Best way to do a cover, in my opinion. What's the point of covering the song beat for beat if you aren't going to do your own spin or make it stand out and set apart from the original? Otherwise, you may as well just stick to the original version.
"I Will Survive" At first I was afraid. I was petrified. I kept thinking I could never live Without you by my side. But then I spent so many nights Just thinking how you'd done me wrong. I became a Cake fan ...geez ..about 18 (?) years ago when some 16 yr old teen girl I knew (I coached college womens ball, and traveled a lot watching high school girls play to recruit them)told this old guy (i was ...50 then) ...wow...double wow....I wore this cd out ..played it everytime i hit the road ....man..I had downloaded my fav music on a thumb drive which my car stereo could play...it was a killer system...and man would I play this loud AF. The entire album was great. Usually I would pick one or 3 songs from an album....I recorded the entire thing. Now, I am 68 and STILL love this song. Trumpet plays a very big part of their musical style ...almost every song.
Which is at first i was scared, i was terrified, kept thinking i could never live without you by my side. But then i spent many nights about how you did wrong to me. Yesss now I WILL SURVIVE to be more independent in order to achieve all my dreams and stay in the plan that is protect by God. indeed for now i have to try hard to repair the part of my heart that is broken and i spend many nights just feeling sorry for myself but i'm sure one day it will be beautiful in time!
*Most Epic Cover Ever* Just perfectly composed. Man 21 years after first hearing it, it still blows my mind. Also: I always wanted CAKE to cover Lovefool by the Cardigans. Was a musician buddy of mine‘s idea… But it just makes so much sense!
I saw Cake live at the Hard Rock, and their performance of Sheep Go to Heaven was absolutely fantastic- I don't think it's safe to generalize that they "suck" live based on your one performance. The Beatles have bombed a concert or two, but I daresay they're one of the best live performers in history- Same to Farrokh Bulsara and Queen.
Bass line, guitar and trumpet just killed it. Bought the album because of this song and all the tracks stand out. Style that can't be duplicated
It's like he wanted to make sure everyone knows exactly what he was singing about without missing a single word. Totally love it.

Yes! I love the way he almost pauses on words in some places, it's great!
His monotone, emotionless voice is awesome for some reason.
He sounds soooo done with the relationship haha
I found it halting. Like he was upset and he was just barely keeping it together.
I really like how they arranged this, with the bass out front.
For years I played this on a loop when I was cleaning the bathroom and kitchen. Don't ask me why. It was just my power cleaning anthem.
Hahahahaha omg the same happened to me

+efedude77 I'm just the opposite. I LOVE cover songs. For one thing: a unique arrangement can bring a fresh perspective to a song.

Been a favorite of mine since I first heard their cover so many years ago. Bought this album the day it was released.
there is one comment below that is so good i have to repeat it. "holy jesus christ, that bass!"
I love this version! It sounds like he is trying really hard to convince himself otherwise, but not at all "surviving" that well...
In my opinion, he’s surviving, but also he’s so mad at his girlfriend he’s crumbling.
Yeah cuz like what he said dude. Its a fuck you version
Hey guy who commented here 7 years ago. How are you
Yeah man. How are you?
@@akkoakk4966 Hey guy who commented here 1 year ago. How are you?
Best cover ever I'll wait three years for a comment because it's from the ninties I'm used to it
Thank god for this upload as the official vevo one sounds like an old VHS rip from the tape MTV would have played 900 times
Which is at first i was scared, i was terrified, kept thinking i could never live without you by my side. But then i spent many nights about how you did wrong to me. Yesss now I WILL SURVIVE to be more independent in order to achieve all my dreams and stay in the plan that is protect by God. indeed for now i have to try hard to repair the part of my heart that is broken and i spend many nights just feeling sorry for myself but i'm sure one day it will be beautiful in time!
a year ago this song helped me sooooo soooo fking much, its unbelievable...
"It took all the strength I had
Just not to fall apart "
Worlds most underrated guitarist...
Such beautiful voicings and phrasing.
i forgot how much i love this band
Best version of this song ever created. Great job Elvis!
*Most Epic Cover Ever*
Just perfectly composed. Man 21 years after first hearing it, it still blows my mind.
Also: I always wanted CAKE to cover Lovefool by the Cardigans. Was a musician buddy of mine‘s idea… But it just makes so much sense!
I wish I hadn’t read this. Now I too want so badly to hear them do a cover of Lovefool and I’m sure it will never happen.
OHHH LOVEFOOL BY CAKE WOULD BE AMAZING
Um... No.
I want a piece of that Cake! Awesome band!
Cake's bass player is the most underrated bassist of all time.
The last bass solo is badass
Uno de los mejores cover que he escuchado, saludos desde Chile.
I remember having the CD years ago . Fantastic !
My shit algedly got stolen by oh?
This song is helping me through a breakup with my first love... It hurts but Cake soothes the soul
Best version of the song ever! Love me some CAKE!!!
I love this version. cake does a great job!
Love the trumpet. Has a western, Mexican standoff vibe to it. Hence ‘survive’
The more I hear this the more I love it. And I adore the original by Gloria, too.
For non-native English speakers it's a quite clear version of the song. Clear as ever!
True !
this song really attended to me during a crushing heart break
13yrs ago this song got me thru my break ups. Stl send it to the people who i know are going thru that one hard break up
They have thier own sound. Love it
Solid, solid bassline... THIS is a cover. Play it as if it were your own!
One of the best covers ever arranged
