- An Iraqi clone of the Soviet T72M variant, the ‘Asad Babil’ began limited production after the Iran-Iraq war ended in 1988. A ‘downgraded’ variant of the widely used and well-respected Soviet T72 design, the T72M1 lacked many modern features and was made in limited quantity, about 100 in all, before U.N. embargo banned arms exports to Iraq. It saw limited combat in the invasion of Kuwait, the Gulf War, and again in 2003 when deployed around Baghdad as a last ditch defense against American forces.
The Asad Babil ‘Lion of Babylon’ MBT weighs in at 41.5 tons and was designed for a crew of four. It was powered by a V-12 Diesel engine which could move the tank at a top speed of 37 mph (60km/h) on good road conditions.
Armed with a 125 mm smoothbore main gun, the Lion of Babylon also carried a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun placed near the cupola and 2 rows of 6 grenade dischargers, seen on the front sides of the turret. Its armor thickness ranged from 300mm to 60mm and 45mm on the front, sides, and rear of the hull respectively.

The T72 has a very war-like look to it - there’s no mistaking what it was made for. Also, great fun to slide down the mudguards (top tip).
It's interesting that most of the post-WWII tanks made by a major military power for a conventional WWIII scenario ended up fighting mostly in Third World conflicts.
Thats my favorite tank and this is so sad to see it like that incomposed with this beautifull music!!!T 72 is still in active service in my country just renamed as M84 with added era armor!!I also did see those tanks in battle during the battle in fall of Yugoslavia (balkan region) and those tanks are no joke ....i saw one geting hit with RPG 3 times and crew survived (they bailed out )tank itself, some days later was towed repaired and was used again in battle!!Thanks for video and stay safe!!🤗🤗
its not only renamed, the m84 is a yugoslav variant of the t72 yugoslav engeeners worked on it to upgrade it and also the m84 is the brother of the lion of babylon as iraqi was taking exemple on the yugoslav army weapons

The frontal plate armour was equivalent to the T-72A obr.1979g, of which the T-72M1 is an export version, with two steel plates, 60mm and 50mm, and two 53mm textolite layers in between, plus an additonal 16mm high hardness plate put on top of is, you can see the holes in it for the hooks on the frontal plate.

The round used would be 3BM3, all steel APFSDS or 3BM15 with tungsted core, definitely export stuff, expecially the first one.

this tank got some upgrades and improvements in Taji complex plant were the T-72 got ceramic & quartz with gabs between the layers making it like spaced-armor replacing the sand blocks which the soviets used to fill their export T-72s, also IR jammer were fitted to counter guided missiles, ERA blocks for additional protection, new laser range finder and ballistic computer were feted also special exhaust were placed to blow the dust and create dust storm which able the tank to evade guided munitions.

It's amazing how tiny it is next to a T-34. Starting with the T-64, the Soviet tank design was all about minimizing interior volume so that less material / weight is required to protect the interior space. Being low profile also decreases the chances of getting hit. Everything was dictated by math, at the expense of crew comfort, aiming to gain any advantage at vehicle warfare over the West.
The Soviet army believed the victory at Fulda Gap should be achieved at any cost because it would set the tone for the Blitzkrieg afterwards. Any conflict between West and East was expected to be very short and destructive for both sides, hence no need for crew comfort. They didn't exactly think of the tankers who were going to spend their lives training inside them, did they?
My uncle was a gunner of t72 he said it is the best tank even better than abrams if it had an experienced crew . Before retirement he was a gunner of abrams and said it's an amazing tank

This fearsome lion defended Iraq against the Naval assault of United States in their first attack in the American-Iraqi war, They were running away from this tank until their airforce and paratroopers changed the tide of war, This distinguished version of the T-72 went missing ever since the war, They took everything and handed us to the Iranians and without any consequences to them.

I have another curiosity for the T-72. The license production of the T-72 tank was launched in 1981 at the Bumar - Łabędy mechanical plant in Gliwice. Initially the model was produced in the T-72M version. In 1986 the production of the T-72M1 version began. On the basis of the M1 version a command variant marked as T-72M1D was created. In total about 1610 vehicles of all versions were produced. The T-72 tank was manufactured for both the Polish Army and for export including Iraq. In the second half of the 1980s from the manufactured elements and parts manufactured in Poland the local production of T-72 "Asad Babil" or "Lion of Babylon" was launched in Iraq. During the Iraqi - Iranian war the Soviet Union also provided a certain amount of Iraq's T-72 army but the exact number is unknown. Who knows maybe the material presented in this material T-72 is Polish production? Greetings from Poland:)

In svk total 1010 T-72M1 were made. From 1987. From 1981 T-72, from 1985 T-72M, from 87 T-72M1. It would seem Iraqis needed ammo only the USSR had to do anything other than flank shots vs then new western tanks. And not only were Iraqis technologically behind, the Whole NATO basically invaded Iraq and destroyed their military. Wiki the non-source claims Iraqis were also outnumbered in personnel 1:5 :1. Tank force of T-54 derivatives was great for 1960s. USA just showed the world it was the boss and can get away with anything, just as when they nuked japan. Demonstration of power, while screaming Saddam, WMDS, Taliban, or Russia, or USSR, or China. From the inside they rot, as can be seen through exceptional inequality with the super rich being in effective control. And they seem to think they are exceptional.

The T72 m1 is a direct copy of the Soviet T72 A with minor changes, mostly to do with the NBC system.

In the iraw-Iran war in 1981 the best armored brigade distroyed the best iranain division (the golden division) and they were all best of Shah tanks from UK and usa this Iraqy armored brigade was all of them from t72 not t72m1 or s ، after this big battle fell Iranian presedand ( bany sader ) ,four reasons maked Abrams win in 1991 one depleted uranium shell, two deplated uranium armore , three thermale vision and far vision , four control in the sky
Number five, the biggest reason, fully trained crews, Number six, Superior fire control system. The Iraqi tankers were hopeless, although it wasn't all there fault, their command and control was equally bad and useless.

I wonder how many proper soviet/russian T72 tanks did they have compared to this variant.
Name one with no ERA armor that is significantly superior to this one. One from the time this one was introduced.
Close to none, they had Czech made T-72M. And some of those M variants sold by Russia as kits. In all cases it was simple steel armor instead of composite one while using old soviet discontinued shells.

@@Creppystories123 The Soviets never sold the T-72 to Saddam, who was a US ally. The Lion of Babylon tank was based on the T-64, a tank which Iraq had purchased before it began their alliance with the US in the wake of the Iranian revolution. Claiming it is a T-72 is just hogwash.

Iraqi Republican Guard soldiers who survived the gulf war said that In Rumaila Oil field 2 Abrams tanks were also destroyed and more were destroyed by Infantry

well, you have to understand some things. IF you do not have your own military industry, owned by the state, it will be too expensive. Another thing, USSR and now Russia has a policy of 5 years before they export serious weaponry aborad, while they already produce superior versions for themselves. During that time in history, 5 years meant a huge gap. Warsaw pact was producing T-72M1 as the newest there was. While a really great tank for its time, the T-72A version 1979 was upgraded in 1981.This is the base version from which T-72M1 export downgrade was made from. In Poland M1 was made from 86, in Czechoslovakia, from 1987. USSR was making T-72B1 from 1984 with much improved armor, there was a version from 87 I believe and also the best, T-72B obr. 1989. In many areas, the tank had about double the amount of effective armor thickness as well as kontakt-1 ERA packs. Early iterations of export T-72B were in T-72S sold to Iran in 1992 I believe. Iraq was bombed because it was an obstacle. When vs Irann, west supported it, then as humiliation, bombed it. And then the sanctions, comment by former Jana Korbelová (renamed as Madeleine Albright) , a jew from Prague, saved from concentration camp death by Serbs, who were later on bombed by her in charge of the US. Hopefully US will only drown in their own blood for all the murders they committed in the long run. If they go to war with one another, then they will inevitably be partitioned and denuclearized. They are the only ones to kill people with nukes in Japan btw. If anything, US should be paying reparations for their crimes, as well as for support of various jihadis who did their work indirectly as in Syria or libya too.

@@husseinoskovjino9398 Actually it is true, armor was far inferior than T-72 models Soviet Union had at that time, lacked laser range finder which was a big problem. Also ammunition used by Lion of Babylon was also inferior to what SU had, for example Iraqi best ap ammunition was 3VBM-3 with 290mm of penetration at 2km, while Soviets had 3VBM-13 with 560mm penetration at 2km. Basically all of equipment exported to ME counteries or African counteries was inferior to what Soviets had.
