    I think you hit the nail right on the head with this video. A lot of "survivalists" jizz over the idea of a SHTF situation because they dream of becoming a hero who will have the "weaker" people flock to them. I think many of them dream of becoming a "knight in shining armour" and saving beautiful young women from some imaginary danger. I'm not trying to take the higher ground though, I doubt I would expend much energy trying to save others.
    I liken it to being shipwrecked and cast adrift at sea - if you try to save the other survivors of the shipwreck, it's incredibly likely that they will cause you to drown as well. The only way to save them would be if you had the appropriate means and methods to do so. I seriously doubt that many "survivalists" have the skills required to become a real leader of men... if they possessed those skills, they would already be in that kind of position.

      I guess you're one of those "prepper" rubes that think they can survive out in the wild with a bug-out bag, a gun and some twine, or hoofing it on the road to nowhere with a few of your pals. (IF) the shtf does arrive, those who stick it out at home are far better off than those who think that they can go it alone in the bush. Even the most experienced outdoorsman can succumb to the elements.

    it is easy for you to say, I was homeless for more than a year, lost my house and everything changed fast. I am no longer homeless I got a good job and I been preparing for me in everyday scenario such as have food storage cause I know what is to have hunger believe me. so now I am a prepper cause I know that economic collapse has happened to me, and it is not easy to get out from the hole.

    Kind of annoying, but fairly accurate I think. Improving your general health would be a good start to prepping or being a survivalist. Knowledge is always a good thing. Also making friends that have useful skillets would be wise. It is tough to make a friend when you need a friend. Any way prep how you will. At least doing something is better than nothing.

    Agree. In these short vids there isn't time to clarify everything. Many things such as gardening I've promoted in past vids and think are very useful for most people now or in the future. You're right the vid is aimed more at an excessive focus on certain practices and tendencies which don't apply to all survivalists but which many have to varying degrees. If people can honestly evaluate and become aware of any negative tendency I think it can help.

    Thanks for the video. Reading some of the comments, I think many missed the point, that your video is harsh to those who are "survivalists" as a form of escapism rather than people who as always in history have PRUDENTLY prepared for winter by storing their summer harvest and prepared for possible hard times while LIVING A REAL LIFE and in order to CONTINUE to live it. It was helpful to me to understand what I am seeing in these EXTREME ("doomsday preppers" type) "survivalists" that are ONLY "preparing for X" or "preparing for Y" - the scenario THEY LIKE. I think it is prudent for all of us to learn LIFE SKILLS, not "doomsday preparations" And if ONLY we could - as you point out - learn how to GET ALONG NOW, we wouldn't even be tempted to think we have to build arsenals then plan to use them to KILL OUR NEIGHBORS!!! What kind of world is THAT to prepare for??? Truly a DOOMs day. Thanks for clarifying lots of confusion. I think you nailed it. And I sincerely THANK YOU.

    look up videos by ray kurzweil, he is stating we are on the verge of a technological revolution on the likes we have never seen before. He talks about exponential growth in computers and technology in general. Yes, there is still the possibility we are in for some difficult economic times but after reading his book on the singularity, I have a new perspective.

  • @SmokeRingsPipeDreams
    @SmokeRingsPipeDreams 9 лет назад +1

    Your example of going to a different neighborhood only holds if you are an egalitarian and believe people are all the same. (therefore poverty being the cause of violence and crime etc) But if the truth is that people in these neighborhoods live the way they do because it's who they are it doesn't hold water.
    Next, your talk about starvation assumes that people who prepare are all preparing for an apocalypse where they could starve. Many "preppers" (and I hate that term) are saving food so when an economic down turn happens they can save money to get though it by eating food they have stored and that is cheap to store. (like beans and rice and grains)

    I lived through almost a decade of hard times after the dot com bomb. Having no debt and having as much cash as possible is the key to living through ups and downs in the economy. Building up your marketable skills also helps.

  • @vention4wh

    2. We're very careful about running up a lot of debt, we drive old paid off cars and trucks and we have a means of self defense, like a gun in the US or maybe a baseball bat in countries where our right to self defense are violated by the government and the guns of the citizenry have been seized. Most people who have a survivalist next door are hardly even aware of it.
    Being a survivalist is just a better, lower stress, more efficient, more prosperous way to live. I'll never go back.

After watching it, I've been thinking on it for a while, and I really think when a collapse happens, regular people are going to form a community and finagle the survivalists into their community. If the survivalist seems unstable, or unable to positively contribute to the overall dynamics, I think that dude / gal is going to be taken out and the community will take his goods. Just having a stockpile isn't enough, you need to be someone others trust and can follow.

    As a prepper, I completely agree with everything you said....from a certain point of view. I can see by the comments below that you've hit a nerve and some are not willing to admit a lot of psychological things. I don't know of anyone who preps, personally, so I've had to rely on dozens upon dozens of videos, subscribing to survivalist magazines, browsing facebook groups, reading blogs, etc. etc.. In all of that there is a scary high percentage of people who almost seem to relish the idea of a civilization-ending doomsday apocalypse as if it was the ultimate Call of Duty game. With all that being said, you may want to consider that although it seems like the majority of preppers have this mentality, it's really only the majority of what you see online. Real preppers who have your same mentality are the quiet ones and you'll never hardly hear about them simply because, like the media, only bad news makes the ratings go up and not the 'boring' normal prepper video talking about nutrition and making your own vegetable garden.

    TL;DR If you want to survive the apocalypse: 1) Be a people person 2) Be rich -- BTW You can't "live" if you don't survive.

    • @anonynomnomnom
      @anonynomnomnom 9 лет назад

      BlackwellReality What part of, "EAT THE RICH!" are you people not hearing? You want a real world example? Study the October Revolution. The rich were rounded up and executed first. The people with interpersonal skills were the next to die. Survivalism is about recognizing the fact that when your neighbor, even if he's been a good friend for decades, is faced with the prospect of starving to death or eating you, *will fucking eat you.* lorax2013 claim that outright starvation isn't common is simply wrong. His naive view of history only goes back to the 60s when Midwest farmers pumped out enough corn to feed the world. When the rock phosphate runs out, that will rapidly dissipate.

    I appreciate the survivalist videos, because if you end up needing to know this stuff, you know it, and much of the advice is good advice whether or not there is a full collapse. I do think we are headed for worse, and I do think the powers that be are facilitating it. I also appreciate your statements here, because excessive focus does detract from what enjoyment and increased relationship development and higher purpose can be achieved in the meantime. Anyone that can grow any kind of food at your home needs to do so even if it is a few containers on the patio. I think for those that are concerned about 'the government' keeping people from growing their own food, just like any laws, if everyone is doing it or so many are doing it, it will not be made illegal. And in areas where it is not allowed by city ordinances or HOA, those laws and contracts will be deemed unconstitutional or something of that nature. So, encourage everyone to learn how and grow a few things.

  • @peacefulprepper2402

    I think you are right on as long as there is still a government and social aid/welfare. When that is gone, and food is scarce, people behave poorly. The shutdown has kicked my home-cooking up into a higher gear and it was already pretty good. I get to talk to people so little now, that I've also been kicking my "congeniality" skills up too.
    One problem in American culture is the veggies = yuck thing. I. Love. Veggies. I've been doing an interesting experiment for the last few months; dumpster diving a couple of places for veggies and it's worked out pretty well. So buy a few and "gather" more. I've also been learning the local "weeds" and that's been fun.
    You're dead-on about most survivalists. They think they're going to end up on top, with people flocking to adore them (after they've shot the ones they don't like, of course) and become Great Leaders. I lived on a survivalist place and that was pretty much the religion. There was a fair amount of talk of cannibalism and some pretty dark ideas ... I eventually got out of there.

    You're saying that a neighborhood making only 10% of the income of my neighborhood would be like what it would be during a collapse. Don't think so. That poor neighborhood that your speaking of still has significant inputs of government assistance and pressures to halfway obey the law. That disappears during an economic collapse on the scale of 1929 which is very easy to see happening given the tenuous foundation of our economy depends on faith in the dollar and massive use of credit. If a collapse of the stature of 1929 were to occur, its impact would be far greater as the citizens of today are much more dependent on the government and more distant sources of supply for basic needs. Basically, that neighborhood your speaking of would not even remotely resemble what it would be if the economic collapse and resulting societal collapse that many predict is coming.

    The butt hurt response is real with this video. He has a lot of good points with this video. Go to most of the "survivalist" RUclips contributors videos and you'll find unhealthy fat people talking giving advice on what 5 weapons to have or bad advice on what foods to store. Most of these videos seems to relish for a SHTF situation to happen. Advising people to store the cheapest processed foods for the calories or spending $10,000 on weapons. Sad for people who would like a more realistic view of reality and do a little prepping. Having been a child of parents who went through the depression I heard stories of economic collapse. Also lived through much of the "Red" scare and remember how stupid many of the ideas were that people had revived now.

    Good vid. It is important to consider the most likely unfortunate eventualities as well as the most dire. Certainly wealth, diplomacy, and nutrition are critical to survival in addition to living well.
    Yet, I think it may be incorrect to assume that all or most self-described survivalists are either poor or have a psychology of inadequacy that drives their interest in survival.

  • @RealityCheck05
    @RealityCheck05 11 лет назад

    At least some seem to be taking reasonable steps to mitigate harm to their selves or their families. The relatively low likelihood that physical security will be the cause of a person's disaster in countries like the United States does not invalidate such a consideration. (that isn't to say that lorax inferred as much)
    There is an interesting book by a fellow named Fernando Aguirre who lived through an economic collapse in Argentina. I think his insight is useful for those with foresight.

  • @jamesritchie6899

    Just two more things. One is that you may have seen third world poverty, and third world civil wars, but if so, you did not understand what you were seeing, and most certainly did not live it yourself, or you would never say that life should be lived, and not just survived. That's a nice sound bite, but a sound bite is all it is, and it can only be said with a straight face by someone fortunate enough to live in a country where there's a choice, or any difference at all, between living and survival. If the shit really hits the fan, we're all going to be living the third world life where there is no choice, and no difference, and all the money in the world won't help you. Though every prepper I know has a good deal of money, and plans the financial aspect wonderfully.The other thing is that you think prepper scenarios are fantasy, and this tells me you haven't seen the top five LIKELY scenarios put forth by the world's leading economic and military experts. They plan for every likely scenario, and they lay out exactly what each will be like. The top five are far worse than any prepper's worst nightmare. The world may escape every one of these. Who knows? But when these experts say atleast one of them is very, very likely to occur, I listen.

    Your criticism of survivalists seems directed at the classic crazy survivalist stereotype you see in the media. If you get into the survivalist community you'll find most of us are a lot more normal than that. Our preps come in handy for far more than just a total collapse situation. In fact most disasters are personal in nature, like a job loss, an injury that prevents you from working, a localized utility failure, that sort of thing. Most of us have gardens & produce some of our needs locally

    With this video being 3 years old, Im curious how you feel now with everything going on in the country? I would imagine you still feel the same way. If that's the case, I would challenge you to use your interpersonal skills on the south side of Chicago right around dusk. That would be a good way to test your theory. But Im sure you're not willing to bet your life on it doing that... Im normally not one for speculating about anyone's life experiences but from the way you speak,, Im pretty sure you have never been anywhere near a war zone. I have multiple times and from what I've seen,, I will stick to my plan to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. You also keep talking about economic "down turn".. You must listen to CNBC. I think you are fooling yourself if you think its going to be as simple as a down turn. What is money going to mean to anyone when there is no economy? I suppose it would be good for toilet paper. That's basically what its worth now anyway. Also, just how do you think all those welfare recipients are going to react when their EBT card don't work? Maybe they will use their interpersonal skills with their congressman but I wouldn't bet on it. Gold and silver will be fine in the long run but short term food, ammo and medical supplies with be currency. I think you should think about contingency plans because if you don't and you are wrong and I am right, well, You wont be in a very good position and I will be just fine. If I am wrong and you are right, I will still be just fine and probably better off than most because ammo has risen 19% consistently over the past few years. That's a pretty good investment in itself. Not to mention everything else I have prepared.. If you don't take my advice with having contingency plans,, Well,, I would just say, Good luck with your interpersonal skills.

    People get ill from a lack of food.Actually the calories and fats and vitamins. Having some essential fats is a good idea. Peanut butter. Olive oil. Having a cabinet with food and some supplies doesn't take much. I don't agree with much said on this video. I think the coming economic collapse will be horrible. I do think many videos talk too much about weapons. But i do suggest owning at least one. I also recommend camping gear. Good luck to us all.

    You were doing great in my opinion untill 4:45 of your speech....for the hole psychology theory.....you despite preppers and this is a bad thing. I think that you are focusing on the 5 and not 95% of all prepper's / survivalisist.....with guns. Most preppers mental evolution is coming from an traumatic experience in witch they had no power to resolve or got a lot of frustration upcoming that specific traumatic event. They told themselves...next time I will be ready! All preppers will in one point tell you that they are prepping because they were frustrated to look people doing nothing while the SHTF. Prepping is all about taking control over a catastrophic situation....and I am not thinking of. MAJOR things...but most of the time 95:5 equation....SMALL things....as example: road accident, job loss, flood, house fire.... Most preppers are humanist and will enjoy life and preserve it at all cost, helping our neighbours and strangers without asking in return....think and repost...

I can see a whole lot of people getting mad and refusing to learn from the dope stuff you put forth. Bullseye!

      "Common sense" is very uncommon among the prepper community.

    I find myself hoping for a total collapse of some kind, be it nuclear war, mega volcano, whatever.
    I enjoy prepping and training but it's time to put all this knowledge to some kind of good use. After all, what good is 2500 pounds of rice, beans and all this ammo and weapons otherwise?
    PS> only kidding...or am I?

    No offence but I think you are missing the point or have some misconceptions or inadiquacies of your own. I think the idea of survivalism is if you can survive in the harshest of enviroments you can be confident about your life. It's not about practicing survivalism to supply some fantasy of being the hero thats just silly. It's developing the skills and know how to not just survive but thrive in the most harshest situations. In the past when war breaks out refuges run away to escape and in a catastrophic event could be anything, if they have time. A survivalist would have greater chances to get away because they are fit, can find water, find food, and make shelter. This is an old vid anyhow

    I like hearing different points of view and agree to an extent but talking and money only go so far and only with rational people. Yes have money, gold, silver, etc. Yes good communication is a basic but important skill. Stay out of bad situations if you can. However there are many more situations that you cannot talk or buy yourself out of. Nature doesn't give a shit how much money you have or what words you say. There are countless survivor experiences that can account for this fact. Also in those poor or "bad" neighborhoods and in many place all over are people who will not listen to anything you say. Nor will your money buy you safe passage. They would simply rob and or kill you and take what is desired. Many people hate themselves and the world and by extension you and simply want to destroy you. Talk and bribe all you like but when you encounter these people you better have a glock to negotiate with or you simply have no leverage.

    I'm sorry but, you're not making sense. You speak about the survivalist wanting power as though that pursuit were an inherently loathsome trait not shared by most people. First and foremost, the pursuit of power is a correlate to fear. Everyone has fear. Think about what power is at its root. If I want to remain healthy, I am wanting power over sickness. If I want extra money, I want power over poverty. If I want to live in a better neighborhood, I want power over threats to my safety. If I want to develop those skills you speak of, I want power over dependence. If I want not to be a slave, and become free, as you titled one of your videos, I want power over bondage.
    The most you can say is that they want an unwarranted amount of power because the threat they perceive is unrealistic, or the approach they are taking to reduce their level of fear is ineffective. But, to be disdainful of their desire for power is to deny the same trait in you, and is nothing but sheer arrogance. Which, by the way, like the hunger for power, is a trait shared by us all.

      +dnsmithnc I believe he means "power" as in being someone who controls by using fear and intimidation (i.e. by stockpiling dozens of guns and ammo not just for their own safety). It's extremely unhealthy and very dangerous to go into a SHTF real life scenario with the mentality of every-man-for-himself, everyone else is out to steal your food, government is out to take you down, just...the whole perception being blown way of of proportion. While yes, having power over your own space is great, it becomes dangerous to others when you use it to control other people's space. If that makes sense.

    this is the first of this "gentle mans" videos I've watched.... I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and watch a few more. So far I'm not very convinced that his "social skills","wealth" or his ability to "live life" will keep anyone from taking his hard earned possessions or properties (in a SHTF scenario). While looking for "enlightenment" in his words I'll keep cleaning my weapons and checking my surroundings............JRW......USMC (ret.)

    He made some valid points I don't necessarily agree with some of his thinking but at least he's confronting issues .I believe in a breakdown of society for whatever reason tho he's apt to get killed for simple fact he's clearly never met people you just can't talk to or reason with like a mother's with a sick or very hungry child if you got food or meds I don't think there will be much if any talking .just surviving or dying.just saying.

    If you really believe that people skills will help you more than weapons you have never felt with people trying to take what you have. I can tell you from experience that weapons will get respect talking will not. I lived through Katrina where the storm not levees breaking killed people. Oh and try telling that to the people who were murdered and raped in the New Orleans super dome!

      You are confusing respect with control/authority. Most people only submit to authority out of fear and/or self-protection, but not out of respect. No one ever actually respects anyone who has an air of authority about them, they merely pretended they do to keep the situation from getting hostile. Fear through authority never gains a person respect but it can gain control/power over a person/situation. I'm not saying you shouldn't have a gun, I'm just addressing the phrase you wrote "weapons will get respect talking will not". Weapons/force/fear are not & will never be a good tool for gaining respect.
