You know, I never opened one up, I have not had to, mine all run great so far. Honestly I’m a bit scared. Maybe one day I will get one that is a wreck, then I will think I have nothing to loose.
I think you're the only on the Internet that may have an answer. My Kato Mikado (1st gen) is not picking up power from the main engine drivers, only the tender. Actually when I apply leads to the traction tire, the engine wheels engage. However the other wheels do not carry power from leads or rails. The wheels are clean and the engine runs as good as new. It looks as if the metal leads on the inside of the driver wheels may have lost contact with the outer rims. Kato has no more replacement wheels. Thoughts? Thanks.
It’s hard to say anything without looking at the engine. Make a video of it and I will watch it to see if I could help. Make some test leads using some wires and an old power pack. Put the wires on each wheel during the video.

U should test all the tender wheels electric when u get it back together.
Thanks for watching!
I sure like watching you tinker with those locos! It sure is a good looking one.
Thanks for watching!
Great looking engine. Those steam engines have a lot of fiddly parts. As always I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing. Dave

That bell is extremely hard to replace if it breaks off and you cant find it. Kato doesn't seem to make anymore detail parts.
I found the katousa website where you can order parts. It’s sold out. It’s a real shame. That 2-8-2 is one of the best running engines out there…
I was hoping you were going to show how to get into and clean and lube the engine.
